On Friday my husband went to SouthTexas ER his eye was red and swollen he was in a lot of pain. The ER doctor examined him and then asked two other doctors to examine him also. They said they had worked out a plan. He was to go directly to Pena Eye Institute in McAllen. He could barely see with one eye . When he arrived he was asked by the receptionist Mable for $35.00. My husband explained that we had just moved into a gated community and we live on a fixed income because he is disabled and if she could bill him for it she refused and did not care. What has happened to empathy and common decency? So today I called and spoke to the office manager her name is Amanda and she had the same non-caring attitude as her staff. I work for five Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgeons and they would never turn a patient away because they didn't have their co-insurance. I also read other reviews for Dr Pena, the wait time is about 3 hours before you are seen by Dr Pena. My husband is my world we have been married for 33 years, I find this so upsetting and I am disgusted by this entire practice. I hope this will help other patients to read reviews before choosing a Doctor. read more

What a waste of my time. I had to wait 3 hours to be seen by the Dr. Why make an appointment? Ridiculous!! Office staff called me the day before to reschedule. The waiting area jam-packed. Hardly any room to sit. OUR TIME is of value also. You get paid while you sit til the end of your shift, we don't!! Dr. consulted barely for 5 minutes while I had to wait 3 hours. No apologies from the front office for overbooking. Only one star cuz I had to. Otherwise it would be a minus. read more

Greatest eye surgeon ever! I just completed lasik surgery, and I can see so clear! 20/20! The staff was very professional. Dr Peña and Dr Flores took the time to answer all my questions, and made the experience very comfortable. During the surgery, Dr Pena made it a very comforting experience, he knew I was nervous and took time to make my experience wonderful. My only regret is that I didn't complete the surgery years ago with Dr. Peña! read more

Waiting was not so bad, but I think it's sad they want to charge you 30 dollars to print out your vision test results !!!!

I recently received Intra LASIK from Dr. Pena. The whole process, from consultation to surgery, took only ONE WEEK! The entire staff is friendly and very specific with instructions and expectations. The LASIK process was quick and relatively painless, there was only discomfort for me. Dr. Pena is extremely friendly and the post surgery visit was quick. By the next day I was already seeing 20/20 from a -5.10 prescription! Dr. Pena's office also offered a special that took off almost $2,000 from the total price. They take Care Credit and the Benny Card. I also got a little gift bag after the surgery that included a shirt, a pen, headphones, and sunglasses in a nice tote bag. What's the purpose of having an appointment? It seems like Dr. Pena feels my time is not important. I had an appointment for 4:30 p.m. and was still in the waiting room at 6:30 p.m with patients still ahead of me!!! I know going to Dr. appointments means you'll be doing some waiting, but being stuck in the waiting room for two hours and still needing to wait for more patients ahead of you is ridiculous. I had Lasik surgery done by Dr. Pena and had good results. I even went as far as recommending him to some of co-workers but now I think I might need to stop doing that because I would hate to have their time wasted waiting to see Dr. Pena. The last few times I have had appointments I had wait for over an hour to see him. This last one finally did it. I seriously need to find a Dr. that values patients time and treats them with the respect they deserve. read more

Dr. Pena is an awesome doctor. His staff explained everything I needed to know about the whole lasik procedure. They were so helpful even when I had so many questions. Made sure they showed me a video of how the process was even before the surgery. I saw Dr. Pena before and after the surgery and made me feel so comfortable. He's a God loving man and instead of going on Christmas vacation he was doing my surgery. Best Christmas gift ever. Recommend him thumbs up. read more
