Stringing prices are decent as is the location and selection of shoes and racquets (although…read morelimited). I would make this my regular shop in Austin were it not for one of the staff members. I came in on a weekend with a friend to get a couple of rackets strung and to peruse the shoe selection. Back home in CA, I have my own stringer. Consequently, I also have my own string (luxilon) on a reel as well as some individual packages that I keep in my tennis bag. Coming into the shop I wasn't committed to even necessarily using my own string. Unfortunately, the middle aged white guy in charge of managing the shop didn't care to listen to my queries about what I wanted. He took one look at my reel and insulted me about its condition. I told him that it wasn't well packaged and potentially slightly dirty because I had moved around a lot recently and had packed the reel into my tennis bag hastily. Still, he admonished me severely for allowing what he seemed to regard as unspeakably bad string maintenance. Although I was by no means committed towards using the reel--particularly since the string pricing at the shop seems reasonable--the employee acted as if I was obdurately demanding my own string, even after I said I'd said explicitly that I'd be fine if he used the shop's string (Again, I think there prices are reasonable.) The only conclusion I can reach, therefore, is that the employee was for some reason intent on demeaning me in front of my clearly more recreationally inclined, accompanying friend. I'm a competitive amateur (generally play 5.0 if available) who was trying to better acquaint my more recreational friend with some of the equipment--like racquets and shoes--in an effort to cement a new friendship in Austin. It seemed that the employee sensed this and out of some unfounded personal animus was purposefully trying to diminish my perceived tennis competence. This incensed me for two reasons: 1) I don't claim to be great at stringing racquets or maintaining equipment. In fact, my skills in this arena hardly keep up with my actual abilities as a tennis player. At no point in my interaction with the employee was I anything but deferential regarding his superior knowledge regarding racquet maintenance. This, despite the fact that were the employee and I to play tennis competitively, I would almost undoubtedly whoop his ass. 2) I was planning on spending more time at the store shopping for shoes and/or helping my friend demo racquets; but, the employee's behavior was so disquieting that I did neither of these things. He created such a contentious atmosphere that either I, nor my friend (who also acknowledged the employee's shitty behavior) had any further interest in shopping beyond getting my racquets strung. In other words, the employee's shitty demeanor denied the store potential purchases and compelled me to look elsewhere for equipment when the shop might very well have served my needs. I suppose, though, that were one to go into the shop for stringing or other needs and not be compelled to interact with this particularly grating employee, he/she would actually find it to be a decent, quaint reasonably priced shop.

If you're into competitive tennis or just hitting the ball around for fun, they can direct you to social groups and teams that may be looking for players. Tennis was something I hadn't done in 10 years, but wanted to give it a shot again. CATA was able to help me find a facility that met my needs (low cost, close). The even assured me I wouldn't be the only overweight person there, and that many people are getting into Tennis for fitness. For the past 3 years, the Westwood Country Club has been host to the ATX Open, a 250 level WTA…read moreprofessional women's tennis tournament here in Austin, Texas. I decided to make a visit for 2025 to see what it's all about. Let me run down some details... For a 250 level WTA tennis tournament, the player field was full of well known contenders. This year they had Jessica Pegula (consistent Top 10 player), Petra Kvitova (2x Wimbledon champion), Ajla Tomljanovic (famously defeated Serena Williams), Peyton Sterns (hometown hero from the University of Texas) and other top 100 players competing. I attended for 4 days including 2 days of qualifying rounds and the first 2 days of the main draw. Unfortunately the first Saturday of qualifying was rained out so they packed a full day of doubleheaders onto Sunday with matches lasting well into the evening. Then I was surprised by how light the schedule was for Monday, but then returning Tuesday had all the big names and players back on the courts for my final day. The Westwood Country Club uses 3 courts for competition. The Stadium, Grandstand and Court 11. Then there were Practice Courts 1, 3, 4, 5 and 12. The Stadium is beautiful. It's built beside a rustic brick player clubhouse. It exudes old fashioned charm. Capacity is 1700 with spectators having their own seat backs. There were no bleacher style benches. Players enter the Stadium coming from the Food Court area in the back. When matches are completed, players return towards the Food Court and it's a good opportunity for pictures and autographs. The Grandstand is situated next to the Stadium and offers 6 - 7 rows to accommodate fans. You can stand and watch the action near the Cadillac Club venue where there's plenty of shade blocking the sun from trees stretching over the court. Btw...the Cadillac Club is a drink/food venue to socialize while watching the Grandstand action up close. Court 11 was confusing. It's located opposite the Grandstand. To reach Court 11, you walk up a hill and underneath the stadium stands to get there. But, there are no seats for watching at Court 11. You must stay on your feet, but the closeups of the tennis were unmatched. And...Court 12 is connected to Court 11. Practice Courts 1, 3, 4, 5 aren't too accessible to the fans (imo). They're pretty covered up with windscreens and I found it difficult to judge who was practicing on them. There were a few electronic monitors scattered around the grounds mentioning which players would be practicing on which courts and at what times. That was helpful but the problem again was that it was hard to watch players practicing due to the sharply tinted windscreens. It was $10 entrance fee for each day of Saturday and Sunday Qualifying Rounds. It was $20 entrance fee for Monday and Tuesday of the Main Draw rounds. I purchased tickets on my phone at the tournament's website...atxopen.com. I then added the tickets to Apple Wallet. Unfortunately, they don't have an App yet for the ATX Open. I'm believe that will change in future editions. Parking for Qualifying was at the HHSC Winters Building - 701 W 51st St, Austin. Parking here was free of charge. It's then a 10 minute shuttle bus ride over to the Westwood Country Club. Starting on Monday for the Main Draw, spectators parked at Camp Mabry (a military base) for $10 each day. Camp Mabry is located at 2200 W 35th St, Austin. It's then a 5 minute shuttle bus ride from Camp Mabry. You can also buy tickets for parking at atxopen.com. Some last extras.....during different intervals throughout the day, there were player Q&A's and autograph sessions for the fan experience. The Food Court area was composed of 4 - 5 Food Trucks. Behind the Grandstand was the Gift Shop. Prices for merchandise were typically high as they are now for all tennis tournaments. I paid $40 for an ATX Open tennis t-shirt. Hats and souvenir towels were $40 as well. Overall, I enjoyed the ATX Open and it's a good warmup tourney before the start of the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells and Miami). The quiet surroundings around the grounds made it feel like an intimate setting for fans. I was able to get up close to some of my favorite players which was rewarding. In the end, I think the Westwood Country Club is a fine venue for hosting a WTA 250 level tennis tournament. Although this was just the 3rd edition of the tourney, I anticipate it'll remain here in Austin for years to come.

The clubhouse is simple yet sufficient - A/C, bathrooms, drinks, snacks, grips and racquets, etc. Everyone who worked there (tournament organizer, who I think was the owner, as well as proshop guy) was friendly. There's plenty of parking, look out for golf carts crossing your path as you journey back there by the way. There's water on every court, scoreboard pole thingies that are in good shape, and good lighting. If I lived closer, I might play there more often.

Eastside Paddle is a fantastic indoor court located right off Airport Boulevard in East Austin…read more It's pretty similar in structure to most other courts where you can both walk in or reserve. We're not too sure how busy it gets here but would still recommend reserving anyways. The parking lot out front is pretty tiny but we got lucky with a spot, just expect to circle once or twice if needed. The inside is very nice and so was the front desk person. Reserving was a tad tricky online but check-in was a breeze. They do offer both indoor and outdoor courts so keep that in mind when you book for options sake. The courts themselves are great. Very clean and well maintained with a side area for bags or anything you don't want on your person. The whole vibe of this place is very Austin, in a good way. They have an upstairs area where it looks like you can hang out as well as ping pong tables out front. This feels like a very community driven place if we've ever seen one. Eastside Paddle Club is a great place to reserve a court and play some pickleball and if not for living up near The Domain this would probably be our go to spot. If you're in the East Austin area and unsure about where to start your pickleball journey then look no further. This is the place to go!

I think this is what happens when you get a bunch of players that come together and create a business. That or the business is a front. The other major flaw is their business model. There is almost never any players there partially because their ridiculous initiation fee of $300. I'd consider paying $100/month which is their monthly due but the initiation fee is outrageous especially because they hardly have any members. If nothing else, they should waive that fee until they have a significant enrollment and be grateful for anyone willing to play outside in the summer. The facility is beautiful and the staff very welcoming and knowledgeable but "What were you thinking!!!" ... Outside... C'mon Man!!!
