I had a good first experience purchasing flowers yesterday at Phelps. It wasn't crowded. Their staff was very friendly. They have tons of annuals, perennials, shrubs & trees. They also have a very large selection of patio & garden statues & fountains from small to large, as well as paving stones etc. Inside they have a lot of ceramic pots & birdhouses. I bought all my flowers from Phelps in Zelie this year and couldn't be happier. They're all doing beautifully. I also bought a fountain, some statues, and a few pots. I usually don't write gushy reviews, but had to for these folks. The selection is nice, quality great, price competitive, and customer service the best. I am big on supporting family owned businesses. Phelps is supposedly a nursery that grows their shrubs and trees locally in Madison, OH. They cIaim to constantly stock the freshest plants, etc. Boy was this false, and I'm making it a point to write this review so that consumers are aware and stay away. My husband and I came here in the spring because we needed some new shrubs/plants, and we saw ads for Phelps and how it's a new location and what I mentioned above. It looked legit from outside. Huge lot with big "greenhouses." We were not impressed by their inventory. Yes, they seemed to have a lot of variety, BUT the plants were old, NOT fresh as they claimed. Plants have noticeable mildew and fungus growing on them. We thought we lucked out, but they sold is ninebark coopertinas that were diseased and eventually died after a few weeks. We wasted a lot of money on this place and on buying sprays to keep the plants alive. It was very stressful. (By the way, we already have nine barks at our home and they are healthy and ninebarks are low maintenance shrubs). The ones we bought from Phelps were a headache. I was so scared that the disease would spread to our shrubs, trees, and plants. I will never recommend phelps to anyone. We would've been better off buying shrubs at the home depot because the plants we have gotten from there and quality gardens are happily thriving in our yard. The workers were not helpful either and tried to keep pushing us to buy their planters. Not impressed. read more

Five hours after visiting many garden centers and nurseries in a 30 mile radius to replace over 6 trees/shrubs that we had removed, Phelps Nursery was recommended to me by Soergel Orchard. It had been raining for two hours, and I almost went home. The best decision I ever made to continue on! Wes could not have been more accommodating and extremely knowledgeable! After showing him home photos and explaining what I was looking for, I felt that he was exactly on the same page AND his expertise in landscape architecture and aesthetics was what I needed! Both of my experiences with a small variety of grassy plants has been fine. Some people are not patient enough for grasses, like bamboo, to grab hold. Now I have a nice selection of tall grasses and bamboo plots. read more

I agree with the previous customer. I purchased several ornamental grasse spring. We planted exactly as instructed - cut back when instructed. In the spring, two of them did not come back. I went and spoke with the same man and he said just to wait it out. We did but still didn't come back. I went back and asked if he would replace them and he advised that they do not have a policy that would comply. I dug out the two and found they were rotten in the middle. I had another landscaper look at them and was told they were most likely old plants that were on their last leg when I purchased them. Do not buy any plants here. There are better nurseries in the area. Although they may be a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for. read more

Phelps is great! Westin, Leo and Lucio are conscientious and hard-working professionals. I don't understand a few of the negative reviews - sour grapes for one reason or another, possibly - it doesn't take a seasoned gardener to realize Phelps' stock is absolutely outstanding. Westin is very helpful in suggesting plant selection and placement on your property for best results, actually coming out to my home to offer expert suggestions. Leo and Lucio are outstanding landscapers with a very high work ethic. This is the second year I have worked with Westin and his crew and could not be happier with the results. Excellent! We recently had Phelps help us design and install trees and plants around our home. It's been several weeks now and all 14 installed trees and plants are doing very well. We most appreciated the support staff, Westin (Horticulturalist) and Christen in helping us select the right plants for our home. The install team of 4, including Westin, did a neat and orderly placement of all new plantings. All were perfect! We would highly recommend them. read more
