For the first time ever I golfed at Bensalem and found the numerous trees to be annoying there. Makefield has zero trees. Lots of sand traps however. Many of the sand traps have small amounts of sand...makes it easier to get the ball out. In fact I use an iron or even rescue club to get out of the bunkers. A few of the ponds have gotten my balls...it happens. Staff is always friendly and accomodating. After golf we enjoy the club house with indoor and outdoor deck seating. However, they raised their prices of alcohol and food...rediculous! $15 for small vodka martini. Totally outrageous for what is served. Bummer. Reservations are a must as it is a popular local course. I had my best game ever today!

We had to wait 20 mins per hole and walked off at hole 7…read more Starter was non-existent and should have approached 2 father's with their 10 year old sons and had them skip a few holes as there were 3 empty holes ahead of them and the dad's were giving their sons lessons while the entire course was backed up. A waste of time and money. The conditions were bad. Inconsiderate golfers do not replace their divots or the indentations on the greens. Bad scene here. Go elsewhere.

There are also two short par 3s and two very drivable par 4s among the other offerings. As Amy mentioned, lots of bald spots all around on fairways and tee boxes and a few places where the grass is super thin to the point of almost being non-existent. The greens for it being late-fall, to me, were actually in better shape than I expected. Due to the size of the course and the topography, I wouldn't dream of using a cart. Why would you? It's short & flat. It terms of pricing, meh, it's a push. I could walk the same 9 here twice or I could walk the 18 at Butter Valley or Sawmill for a few bucks less. Driving out to the northeast brought out a ton of old memories. I used to play golf at John F. Byrne across the street as well as sled there when the snow came. Driving up to the clubhouse of the Donald Ross designed course the bag attendants are ready with a smile to take your clubs and directions anywhere on the property. Upon making it into the locker room the locker room attendant quickly offered to shine up my shoes and showed me to a locker I could use for the day. The locker room is a double deck all brand new with 12" shower heads to wash away those bad swings after the round. The pro shop staff was a treat to interact with from start to finish. The help they showed in the pro shop was top notch and the products they offered were equally top line, really nice swag here. Now, the golf course is where that last star was left off. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice course, tees are perfect, fairways are well defined and mostly in good shape, bunkers are a dream to play from (both fairway and greenside) rough was heavy in some areas and light in others but the courses real challenge doesn't come from the tee or fairway, it comes from the greens. These things are hellacious. Being long of the pin to start your day on 1 and 3 is a death wish! I genuinely didn't believe a putt would stay on the green on 3 (because it didn't on 1) so I gave it a little nippy chip down the hill that nearly stopped half way down and even still, I was 15'+ coming back! There's some overly challenging undulations here that weren't a big deal back in the 1890's when the course was opened since they couldn't mow the grass this tight, but with today's maintenance standards there's some serious challenges here for the everyday golfer. Besides this the course plays very fair throughout. You can be a little wild off the tee and still have a chance to score which is nice. The banquet staff here and the food was superb. All of our dishes were served correctly and the staff took great care to deliver plates from the proper side as well as clear them at the right moment and from the proper side as well, that's a nice touch. My Filet was perfectly cooked and the crab claws were so fresh, it really was a nice dinner. Overall I can see where the club wants to be, a premium club that does everything very well and that it does. The staff they have assembled is 5* start to finish but the course needs a little tightening up in some areas throughout, a few bare spots, some overly heavy rough next to some very light rough, a couple large dry dirt patches in the field of play but it's a great place to call your home course as you will certainly be tested every time you tee it up and your guests will be thrilled with the service they receive, just don't forget to keep your ball below the pin!
