I am new to the area and tried two high-end salons before coming to Phillips Salon in Stamford. I waited a month to review the salon because I wanted to share that I noticed an improvement in my hair. I have to say that Phillip is a very talented stylist and was very informative on the best way to take care of my haircut. It was one of the best I have ever had. I walked out of the salon with everything I needed to care for my hair for the next month or so, and prices were reasonable. The staff is friendly, and the salon has a pleasant atmosphere. read more

My experience here wasn't really terrible until the end. Philip is incredibly aggressive, rude and kind of scary. Be aware that when you go to this place the junior stylist Natalie gives a lot of unsolicited advice. From the moment I sat down in the chair and took out my ponytail all she could do was pull at my hair (which I'm not sure why she constantly needed to do) and tell me how much she "didn't like what was going on with my hair." She went to the length to show me the back of my hair to show me "what it's doing back there." I was trying not to laugh, because first of all my hair had an ombre, only IN THE FRONT and I must of had to explain this to her multiple times and tell her that my hair color was very intentional. She made me feel like I needed to defend my hair constantly throughout our conversation because she was bashing the current state of my hair so bad. I was trying my best to not let her offensive attitude make me emotional but I have never in my life had to repeat myself so much,  to get my message across to a hairstylist. And at the end of the day her title is "junior stylist" how can she think she has so much knowledge and expertise about a stranger's hair that she just looked at, it was such an odd and strange experience.   I didn't want to be rude to her because she seemed like she must have been in her late teens...it's aa though she didn't think I had a mirror and i didnt know what my hair looked like, she was so condescending. Anyway,  I booked with Natalie for a glaze treatment because I only wanted to pay a smaller rate; and I was very adamant about ONLY wanting a glaze. There was never any mention of an all over color also being applied. All this girl did was tell me that my hair was going to be significantly darker and if I would be okay with that. Never once mentioning she's doing more than a glaze, in the same sentence of her making sure I was okay with a darker result, I said yes because of the glaze and she just nodded her head. So at the end I definitely liked my hair however I was expecting to pay  $45  but the total ended up being $95. Which was a huge surprise because I couldn't have said that I ONLY wanted a glaze more times than I already had. The girl was literally smirking at me when she mentioned she also did an all over color. Honesty, I felt racially profiled and extremely disrespected. Instead of having the decency of letting me know that doing a glaze wouldn't achieve my desired results and by doing an all over color for an extra $50 would be extremely beneficial. Like every other hair salon I've ever been to, if the stylist thinks an additional treatment is necessary they COMMUNICATE it ! Because at the end of the day it's my hair and I live with it paying a little more wouldn't have bothered me if it was properly explained to me. Additionally this girl did not respect me enough to tell me prior to starting because she assumed i wouldn't invest $95 in my hair?? I cannot imagine what made her feel OK about her decision to not inform me she was also doing an all over color. Overall a very indecent person and salon. After i paid and also tipped this girl, i left feeling really bad. And i thought maybe instead of writing a review i can just speak to the manager/owner. I spoke to Philip the owner and what a mistake because it was such a scary experience. He was ready to fight from the get. I was calm and did not want to be rude because ultimately I liked the final result but this man wouldn't let me get a word in and was getting louder and more aggressive as i tried to speak to him. He was mainly talking over me and repeatedly said that my hair was a night and day difference and isn't that the point, that my hair looks better. He aggressively asked me what was it that i was looking to achieve by calling and I simply wanted the respect to be told about what treatment was being done to my hair before it gets done, proper human decency and respect. I didnt realize how difficult of a task that is for some. Moreover I wanted to know why it couldn't have been told before hand that just doing a glaze treatment would not give the desired results. In the midst of his aggressive barking he told me to come back to his salon for a full refund when I said I didn't want a full refund he tauntingly repeated that he's gonna give me a full refund. So when I finally agreed and said I will come back this man told me I can have a full refund and he'll also take out the glaze. What a classy person. If you can't decide between coming here or another place, just go somewhere else. Save yourself the disrespect, insults and bad energy and go to a place that respects their clients and their wishes. read more

A great atmosphere for sure! Hey i should be using this line for a restaurant, but seriously, you walk in this trendy place and feel a little out of place. Atleast I did. It is very cool, modern decor, with seats that massage you. The girl who washed my hair, gave me a great head massage as well, which almost put me to Sleep. My Hairdresser was called Jaimee. New to the area, I had my first appointment today with Barb, because of her great reviews on Yelp. I have to say- she was so welcoming! Fun personality, funny- and of course, my color and cut is beautiful. Barb is very good at asking questions about what you want with your hair, as well as your goals. I'm not sure if the bad service I received here was due to being short staffed, but it left something to be desired. My hairstylist and colorist was Jaimee who was nice but inattentive. She put color in my hair and left me without a warning on how long it would take to set and went and cut someone else's hair while i sat wondering if she forgot about me! Then the hair washer burnt my head with scalding hot water and scratched my ears repeatedly with her dagger nails. My hair color looked copper even though I asked to take the warm tones out of my blonde hair. Which I wouldn't have asked to be redone if I knew a red tinted light was shining right above my head. What the heck?! The service would have been great if they didn't leave me in my chair waiting frequently without any warnings. I don't think I'll be going back here again, unfortunately. read more

I always like to write my reviews after I have been somewhere more than once. I have had highlights here twice and encountered the same situation. PROS: Everyone at this salon is SO sweet and helpful (with the exception of the surly Asian girl at the front desk) I was offered tea and coffee every time I was here. The massage chair is lovely as you get shampooed. The salon itself is a beautiful space and very clean and well kept the location is convenient with parking (I'm from NY, so this is a big deal) ISSUES: Although the first time I went, I liked the initial color, whatever formula they use seems to become extremely dull and brassy. (a definite no-no for a blonde) The highlights themselves were done meticulously, so I doubt highly that it's the stylists fault, but both times after I washed my hair, it looked like I hadn't had anything done to my hair and within a week or so it looked like I needed to go back again. The color was dull and dark looking, and the roots seemed "dirty" looking no matter how often I washed my hair. I didn't have a cut here, so I don't know what that's like, but I think if you are a blonde (or want to be) you might try somewhere else. read more

HORRID!!! I went in to get highlights and caramel lowlights with Susana. I have pretty thick hair but somehow she was done within 30 min. My hair was dark dark grey with some heavy and chunky blind highlights on top only. When I gagged she said she could fix it but personally wouldnt change a thing! After clarifying shampoo and 3 hours, I went home and my husband asked if it was a joke. He thought I was doing a practical joke. I cried in the bathroom. Went back to fix it with the owner who said he'd do baby blond highlights and tone down the grey. After dropping bleach on my shirt and thus ruining it, I ended up with grey hair and dark brown(!!!) lowlights. I was shocked, it literally matched my shirt. When I said, I thought we were doing baby blond highlights, he looked at the hair and said - its a good color though. I am wearing my hair up these days, its less hideous. I have to wait at least 2 weeks before I can do anything about it. Everyone still asks why did I change my hair. With thanksgiving and christmas parties, I am just miserable. If I had used box color and done it myself, I would have been happier. Conditioning and restoring my hair is going to take lot of time and money. DO NOT GO!!! read more

A great personal salon. I go to my "Sculptress" who not only greets you with love but spends time assessing how the previous cut worked and what to do going forward. I've had the same NYC stylist for 20 years now (yes, touch of OCD), but in a desperate pinch gave them a chance. Tori spent the better part of 10 minutes to understand how best to deal with my cowlicks, waves, length, etc. The result was EXACTLY what I wanted, and better in some respects. Phil is amazing, he's down to earth and knows the geometrics of cutting. I've referred my mom, grand mother and friends and they've loved his cuts and color. I wish I could remember my stylist's name, I went here a few times a few years ago while visiting a friend (I moved out of Wilton in the 90s, but grew up here) the woman was a brunette and from Stamford, I hope she is still there-I want to say her name was Stephanie. She did a great job on my hair which is thick and long (I am black) and was very personable. The four stars are for her. I can't really say anything remarkable about the salon itself. All I've ever gotten done here since I moved from DC is a wash and style with a trim a few times. The service is great, the chair massages are awesome while you get a wash, and the head massage they give is out of this world. Never been to a salon that offers so much. Anyway, as far as quality of actual hair service-which is really what am coming for, it's ok. Again, it takes a lot for me to have a new stylist color or do funky treatments on my hair....have to build the trust. And I would say that the staff at Philips are quickly gaining my trust.
