Great Food, large portions. Home Town Country cooking. Service is good, most wait staff are friendly and cheerful. It's a Mom and Pop diner that could use an interior update but everything is clean and tidy. This place is the poster child for "mom and pop" comfort Appalachian food! Don't be scared by the outside (or the inside!)... this place is the real deal. Down home country cooking and homemade pie! The menu has all of the favorites, and everything is delicious. Open faced sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy are what they are known for, along with beans and cornbread. The foods flavor and portion sizes arent consistent,there is 1 waitress (Heather) that needs to change her attitude or get in a different line of business! I have recently found out that she is 1 of the daughters of the owner and that explains a lot about her getting away with her horrible disposition and absolute unfriendly attitude.(Doubt she could get a job anywhere else)Helping your child is one thing but letting them talk to and treat customers like dirt is ridiculous and can't believe the owner lets her get away with her crappy attitude towards anyone she feels like being crappy too.The owner/father obviously doesn't care about his business or he is just a spoiled brat and doesn't care if his restaurant goes under, daughter or not you have to draw the line somewhere. Watch your receipt! The two times I ate here, I wasn't overwhelmed with the food, but I also got simpler entrees like steak (not a great sear) or fish with green beans and cottage cheese. The pies looked amaze. My complaints are more about staff. One waitress, long dark hair was always perky and kind. The waitress with the shorter light brown hair was curt with all patrons, not just me. Like, legit rude. Further, I had a takeout order and she added a nice little $5 tip to herself on a $15 to-go order. Tips don't show up right away online for credit purchases so make sure you check your account often. A normal experience is pretty typical, but my latest involved waiting about 30 minutes for a refill PRIOR to our food having arrived. I'm really sad that the Belgian waffles are a thing of the past. At one point my family had stopped eating here because the portion size was dismal and the service was sub par, but I guess they turned a leaf and got new management or something (maybe that's why the waffles disappeared). The prices are a little on the high side for a country mom and pop type restaurant, and there is no kid's menu, which is a huge disappointment. The first time we came, the waitress forgot all our side dishes and we had to track her down and go up to the counter to get them and refills. It does take a while to get your food, even when they don't seem very busy. The second time we came back, our waitress was on top of things and even brought us refills before we asked for it. But so far in this trip this place beat out Medallion and Margarita's Mexican Grille for best food in town. read more

While we've always had a meal commensurate with the expectations someone should have of a "home style family restaurant" attached to a no name motel in a humble country town, the Philippi Inn restaurant consistently and increasingly is in rapid decline. Food portions definitely reflect a quantity over quality perspective. A little effort to improve quality would go a long way - even if it came at the expense of the lesser quantity or modest increase to their menu prices. The waitstaff is super friendly, but I'd suggest they all redirect the slow time spent chatting with each other doing some serious cleaning. The entire place is coated in the greasy, dusty filth that comes with years of "surface cleaning" only. Get rid of the schlocky aprons and pictures on the wall that are dirt magnets (and don't sell!), replace the dirt-embedded plastic gingham table cloths and steam clean that gross floor. A week spent cleaning floorv-to-ceiling, finding ways to improve food quality and seriously scrubbing those bathrooms would be time very well spent. read more

I'm giving 4 stars because the people were real nice, the service was smooth, the food was good - especially the waffle fries - and it was convenient to the Mountaineer Inn where we were staying. There aren't a lot of options in that town from what I could tell so I was glad that we had this place outside our "hotel". If my daughter goes to Alderson Broaddus University, then you'll bet I'll be coming here again again to try their breakfast. read more

The place is not clean. The door looks like it hasn't been cleaned in days. The floors are filthy actually the whole place is down right dirty. The waitress does not clean the tables very well. I thought things were suppose to be spotless during this Covid-19. The old plastic table cloths should be trashed. The chairs and menus are always sticky. We use to eat there often but seems like after opening back up the place has went down hill, the food not that great anymore. The waitress seem to only have time to stand and look at their cell phone. Most times drinks are not refilled or asked if you may want dessert. My last trip there the egg omelet was the worst that I have ever eaten anywhere and cold. I could continue to write, but just decided to not go back there any more. It would help maybe if the waitresses could stay off their phones and do more and pay attention to the customers. They allow people in with no masks also. read more

Stopped in today as we traveled through. I had eaten here many many years ago. I have to say for a small dinner,in a small town, there's prices were very unreasonable and the service was horrible!!! The waitress never allowed us to all sit down before taking our drink order. I was the last person to sit down,in our group of 5 adults and 2 babies. After two people ordered,she asked, does anyone else want a drink! The rest of us placed our drink order. She brought our drinks and said, PASS THESE DOWN! She never asked, she told us. Then she took our order, no smiles, no ok's, no yes or no's. She brought our food and we passed them to the proper person also. We were the ONLY table in there! It's not like she was busy . She never spoke to us,other than what I posted. Food wasn't worth what was charged but better than the service. We had to ask for the check. I did ask for a refill but she never came back. After dropping our food off,she all but ran away. Never asked if our food was ok so far ?Could I get you anything. else? Would you like desert ? Will their be anything else? Have a nice day! NOTHING!!! We will never eat there again.I typically never complain about food or service but this lady had us all upset. I do believe she is the rudest waitress/waiter any of us has ever had.
