It's better than Cheers. But this review has to be more than 85 characters. So, I will recommend the Fresh Tracks golden ale, Badfinger stout and 5 phantoms barleywine. Oh, and Razzu raspberry wheat. Philipsburg Brewing Company was one of the many Montana breweries I got to try while on a recent trip to the state. The Haybag Hefeweizen was the beer that we had. Hefeweizens can be a tricky beer for me to get fully into. Sometimes the flavor profile which is indeed primarily made up of banana or clove can taste heavy handed. I am not suggesting that it's a poorly made beer but the one sidedness of these dominant flavors I don't usually care for. So it's a preference thing and not a quality thing necessarily. I can get into Hefeweizens if it's more seamless and balanced a certain way however. So with saying all that I thought the banana was a bit heavyhanded for me. Other flavor characteristics besides the banana that are present are sweetness and a clean finish. The beer is smooth and light bodied also. I feel like what's in order at this point is to try some of their other beers and then assess on those. read more

Philipsburg, MT reminds me of Pescadero, CA. Both are road trip destinations for the adventurous at heart. Both are places of immense scenic beauty - Rocky Mountain majesty in the case of Pburg, and Pacific coast perfection in the case of Pescadero. Both are locations that rely on tourism to augment an economic model than once exploited natural resources (whales for Pescadero, precious metals for Philipsburg) but that remain places of significant splendor. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the chance to visit this brewery, but I was on a river trip recently with some very nice people from Phillipsburg, Tom and Sherry. They brought the beer with them on the trip. Not only was the beer I tried really good, but the cans they come in were perfect because you can screw the tops back on when you set your beer down. I never knew I wanted to visit philipsburg Montana before I met these beautiful people, but now I'm hoping to get there next year, and try all of their beer. The IPA I had was great! read more

Small historic mining town to check out. The brewery is located in downtown Philipsburg, Montana in a historic bank building constructed in 1888. The establishment is open 7 days a week and features live music on Friday and Saturday night. I really enjoyed their Algonquin "Gonk" Amber. It is an amber ale modeled after the Alt (old) beers of northern Germany. Simultaneously rich and crisp, this beer exhibits strong caramel malt flavors without being sweet or cloying. The Algonquin mine was one of the first major silver lodes in the Philipsburg area, and later produced manganese to support both world war efforts. read more

One of Montana's newest breweries, and quite a gem. Kathy, one of the co-owners, was our server. Knowledgeable, with a good bevy of beers to choose from. I sampled them all, with their Tramway Rye being my favorite. The head brewer, Mike, is from Kettlehouse, so you know they have a quality product. Their beers are easier on the palate for non-craft beer fans, a smart move for a rural start-up. (Lots of light pilsner drinkers in the area!) An intimate gathering. They don't accept credit cards as of December 2012 but an ATM is available on site. Great place to go après-ski! read more

Great space, indoor and outdoor seating. Very dog friendly which I love! I was there on a Monday afternoon and this place was packed! Had a flight with 5 samples. I loved the HayBag Hefeweizen. The pilsner was unexciting. The pale ale had the right amount of bite. Brought home a growler of the Hefeweizen. Great prices, too. They could probably charge more, but I'm glad they don't! As a non drinker I cannot attest to anything beer related , but what I can say is this . Our community is held together in large part , uniquely , by this brewery. In our over stimulated world , there is an under current of "old timey " social construct. From Taco Tuesday's to non-profit Thursdays and VFD appreciation nights , this small business gives back untold riches and caring to our community . Word of mouth ways to get things done , friendly gestures of affection and appreciation , that is what I see . The coolest thing about PBC, other than their beer, is their bar top. It features something every brewery should have, a copper plate running down the length of the bar, that's refrigerated! This is a very cool place for a pretty cool town. I wouldn't mind living here! We visited from Washington while on a trip to Alberton. My aunt and uncle live there and wanted to show us the candy shop down the street. My uncle just wanted to visit the brewery I think, as he already had one of there very cool insulated growlers to refill. I am a big beer drinker, and their IPA was very nice. My wife had the Raspberry Wheat, which she really enjoyed on a hot summer day. I also quite liked the Saison and had several of those. All in all, a great little brewery. They don't serve food, but they do have various food trucks just outside depending on the day of the week. We were there during a music festival down the street and this place got very busy! Beers are $4 per pint. They do not take credit cards so bring cash unless you want to pay $2.50 to get your money from the ATM upstairs. Enjoy! read more

Very cool place with great beer. Seating is a bit limited but there is a second sitting area in the back (and outside if it's warm enough). The staff was super nice. I had the Razzu Raspberry Wheat and was super happy. It's fruity but not overpowering or tart. My husband had the Haybag Hef which is an award winning hef and it's easy to see why. He also had the Honest Living Milk Stout on nitro which was delish and smooth. We'll definitely be back. read more

What a great place! The beer is surprisingly good. It isn't just "small town" good. You'd drink here if it were in Portland or any other big city with great microbrews. As others have said, the cold bar helps keep your pint cold as you enjoy it in this historic building. This is a must stop if you're in Philipsburg. read more
