I really enjoyed getting my produce from Philly Foodworks while living in Philadelphia. I went for the subscription box and it was almost always full of a variety of perfectly ripe fruits and veggies. Once in a while I would get something that was not as fresh, but it was very rare. Philly Foodworks is unique among csa-type distributors because they have a full online grocery store you can shop from, whether you're getting a produce box or not. I was able to get almost all of my groceries each week from Philly Foodworks with their numerous options. If you shop around, you can find really affordable items as well. Subscriptions for eggs, dairy, and meat offer further discounts. In general, I ended up spending as much, or a tad less, than I would for the same items from an actual grocery store. I only ever shopped online, but I believe they also have a store front you can go to if that option is better for you. They deliver right to your doorstep for a small fee and the actual process of getting groceries/subscriptions was always a breeze. The quality of the food cannot be overstated. Once you go direct from the farm, it's hard to go back to the tasteless big-box grocery store produce. The eggs and milk were also amazing, as was the beef. Last but not least, they're a great organization with increasing access, sustainability, and regenerative farming practices at the root of everything they do. read more

I have been a Philly foodworks customer for over three years now and it was the best decision I have ever made. I was in the market for local produce, non gmo and organic. The quality is unmatched and when I say you can taste the difference I mean. I had never tasted carrots as fresh or potato's with so much flavor. Things you don't realize when you are used to big box store imported low quality produce. It's also a huge relief to not have to worry every time there is a new listeria recall on items. This was huge for me during the cucumber and tomato's recalls two summers ago as I was pregnant and would only eat produce from Phillyfoodworks. I also appreciate the variety of other options they provide. The fresh pasta is delicious and Im a huge fan of the chicken sausages. The customer service is also great and very responsive. Fresh and local. That is something I can get behind! I love the summer farmers market, but this is more consistent and year round! I especially love the pastured eggs. Those bright orange yolks remind me of when I was a kid and my mom got eggs from a local farmer. They are superior in every way! I get all my proteins from Philly Food Works. Local farms raising pastured animals. More expensive, yes. But the flavor far surpasses anything you get in a grocery store. We eat less meat, but the quality is much higher. I participated in Philly Foodworks CSA back in the day when they just started and you had to front the cash for the fruits and veggies at the beginning of the season and then you got what you got throughout the summer and fall. After a several year hiatus, it's great to see how far they've come. They have a ton of convenient pick up locations throughout the city and the ability to customize your contents each week and skip weeks when you don't want it or will be out of town is a huge benefit. Each week year round I do the milk share, egg share, breeds share, and yogurt share, and most weeks I also do the veggie and/or customizable fruit boxes. You can see in advance what kind of veggies, fruits, bread, and yogurt you're getting and either keep it or cancel it for the week. As long as your total order meets the minimum (I believe it's $28) they'll fulfill it. The food is priced a bit higher than what you'd get at a traditional grocery store, but I'd rather get my bread from a local baker, my eggs/milk/yogurt from a local dairy, and my produce from local farms/orchards. Not to mention I can place my order online and pick it up a few blocks from my house and avoiding having to shop in the Acme is worth the money in the aggravation it saves me! read more

I have been using foodworks for weekly deliveries for over a year. I specifically use them for their excellent locally sourced produce. It is basically a farmers market selection -- all the local goodies you would see in a philly-area farmers market, with local farm suppliers from PA and neighboring areas -- but you shop online and they deliver a box to your home each week w/the things you ordered. To round out their offerings throughout the year, they also offer some non-local items like bananas and avocados. And in terms of the overall quality of the produce -- I have never had "bad" or even sub-par produce from them... it is always exceptional quality. Looks beautiful, bright colors, and tastes great. It is fun to shop online each week, and to know that you're helping build a local + community-oriented food movement... they offer a few ways to give back by donating food to the community such as the "Help Feed the Community" item, in which you can give regularly, starting at $2/week and going up from there if you wish, and they also take one-time donations. Lastly, I really appreciate their packaging -- for the things I purchase (mostly fruits/vegetables/mushrooms, eggs, bread, and coffee), they always only uses paper packaging if anything, and your delivery always comes in a reuseable and collapsible wax box, which the delivery people will take back each week when they drop off your new box. I know some of the other items such as dairy products or frozen or prepared items, may come in plastic bags, or use ice packs, but I also believe that Foodworks takes back some of those plastic reusable packaging. For my needs, I am able to largely avoid plastic packaging from them (and other reuseable packaging that I still don't want to deal w/anyway). read more

I have been a subscriber to Philly Foodworks for 2.5 years and love it! They have fresh produce that is much more local, seasonal and fresh than what you find in the typical grocery store. I love their customizable weekly boxes because they inspire me to use ingredients I don't usually work with ... and I can still switch out produce I know I won't use. They also have a partnership with a farm in Florida to get tropical fruit and I'm obsessed with the passion fruit! The customer service is excellent as well every time I've had an issue with a product I've received they've refunded me. A few things to note: -- some products are more expensive than in the grocery store but not always -- produce is fresher and not genetically modified to stay fresh for super long so you do need to eat it or prepare it and freeze it faster than you normally would. For example if I don't cook my potatoes within a couple days or refrigerate them, they will go bad -- produce needs much more cleaning than grocery store since it's straight from the source -- the produce does not always come in convenient storage containers. For example carrots come in paper bags. I learned the hard way if you keep them in paper bags they will get limp much more quickly. Overall I have enjoyed my subscription and intend to keep it going as long as I can! It's also nice to give money to the local economy and put less money into Amazon's pockets (the closest grocery store to me is Whole Foods). read more

What I like most of this local co-op produce delivery service is its variety of local vegetables and fruits. I like to explore when it comes to food, and I've had some really interesting ingredients for my cooking. And the bakeries in their network have some interesting good stuff too. I was referred to Philly Foodworks by a friend early during the pandemic as a great way of getting farm fresh food when I might not want to go to a farmer's market. It has been an absolute god send this year. The produce is always fresh and ordering once a week allows me to meal plan, making cooking that much easier. I have not tried their meat, as the portions are larger than a small household needs, but the cheese is out of this world. I love the packaged products as well - they just delivered a locally made garlic mustard that will be going with the Christmas ham this year. The prices are beyond reasonable for their products. I am always amazed at how much produce I get in an order and end up usually only ordering once every two weeks (and the produce stays good in the fridge for those two weeks as well). Online ordering makes it easy and it helps me eat more seasonally, which is my personal goal. You won't go wrong with Philly Foodworks, but if you live alone, remember how much produce comes with each item. read more

Produce delivery options don't come often during this covid19 problem (with Amazon/Whole Foods backed up). BUT! These guys have been working hard for our community and we appreciate it!! Its a 5.00 delivery fee if you spend less than $75.00. Otherwise free! Customer service has been great to deal with via email! Top quality food, huge variety of stuff, from produce to meats and dairy, breads, pantry stuff, even prepared food that you can easily through together for a meal. Most everything is local or otherwise stated. The cheeses... I am a cheese lover, and they have many varieties to choose from, cow milk cheeses and goat milk cheeses, even a vegan cream cheese (which isn't a bad spread on an Everything Philly Muffin). We are very fortunate to have access to local produce in the suburbs via Philly Foodworks. The produce is very fresh and lasts a long time. I have really enjoyed some of the teas, the relishes, the sausages, the cheeses and the yogurts. The staff is always a pleasure to deal with and quick to respond if you need them to address an issue. Had to come back and write about one of the REAL joy bringers of this CSA... Earlier in the year, maybe the beginning of spring, PFW offered a weekly flower subscription at $17 per week. I mentally went back and forth about this for several reasons. The first is that I am often stupidly cheap when it comes to things that will give me long term pleasure, meaning I was biting my figurative nails over this 'expense.' Truth be told, it's not at all unusual for me to spend $17 in an afternoon and not even remember where that money went. Second was that while I had ordered PFW's bouquets in the past, they were alright, kinda pretty but not terribly long lasting. 3 days at most. Also not much variety. The flowers ARE organic, though; in fact, here is the blurb from PFW's website... Each bouquet contains between 18-21 stems of unique seasonal flowers and foliage. The flowers are grown at the Ruth Bennett Community Farm, an urban farm located in Chester, PA. While at the farm, these pesticide-free flowers attract a host of pollinators and beautify their urban surroundings. In your home they will bring beauty, joy and wonderful scents. If one opts to add the occasional bouquet to their weekly order, it's $20. Still not an extravagance by any means. After slapping myself for being a tosser of a tightwad, I signed on to receive the weekly bouquet. Reader-I am SO GLAD I did! I work from home (not pandemic related) and while I adore the good cheer and beauty that having cut flowers in the house brings, most of my shopping is done online. I also do not live close to a place that offers grab and go cut flowers nor do I have a large yard with a dedicated cutting garden. When I got my first subscription bouquet, OMG-I was blown away with how exquisite it was. The arrangements are different every week and they are sumptuous. They come in water (a plastic bag of it, secured so the flowers stay hydrated prior to delivery and no water is spilled along the way) so they arrive fresh and perky. Part of the arrangement is always something very fragrant, like blooming purple basil, blooming catnip or blooming dillweed. There is often a big puff of hydragena, a long lasting cut flower, or a few stems of fresh straw flower. The color combos are really outstanding. There are no unnecessary bits of just filler foliage-ever. All the stems are of something fragrant, unusual and beautiful. Best of all, the flowers last at least a week and when I get the following week's bouquet, often I can take what's still living from the prior week (like mini sunflowers or dahlias) and make a second, smaller arrangement for my office or the bathroom. I sincerely hope that PFW keeps offering this subscription all year long. When the weather turns cold, it would still be an immense treat to receive dried arrangements. They do offer wreaths in November and December and sometimes I buy one, but greedy as I am for a touch of luxury, I want these bundles of beauty all year long. Kudos to you, PFW, for organically supporting pollinators and also helping to make my house a bit more beautiful and me more joyful, especially during these challenging times. read more

We joined Philly Foodworks right before the lockdown was issued in March, and we love it! Having fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, tofu, coffee, cheese and sometimes even meat and fish delivered to our door weekly has been a real game changer. We get the small customizable box, which is just enough for two people. The service has been very consistent (especially considering the current climate), and if something is out of stock or a shipment is delayed, they are always very communicative and keep us updated. Many of my family members who live in other cities have access barriers to food that is fresh local organic and from farmers markets. Mainly because it's on a day of the week they can't make, or they have to travel a long distance or the market is seasonal. I got fresh produce and dry goods delivered to me during the pandemic. even now that I have long work hours and by the time I get home I just don't want to go and spend my evening in a super market it is so convenient to have this subscription. I've done CSA boxes in SF and NYC and Philly Foodworks is my favorite by far. The quality of the produce is excellent. There is complete flexibility so no more boxes full of potatoes and leaks. The price is very low and reasonable. Plus you can get a lot of other things besides local fruit and veggies. We get eggs, flowers, bread and coffee every week.
