Our packed-for-college Toyota van started to overheat at the end of a long drive from Michigan. It was rainy and dark, Friday night, and we were four travelers plus a dog. On similar occasions I've been stuck for the weekend. The gas station clerk recommended Phil'a. It was close, he said, and they had worked on his car before. They had a reputation for helping people who were far from home. Connor came and towed our car. He was pleasant, affable, good-humored, indulgent, and his manner helped to put me at ease. He told me probably his boss would look at it in the morning and hopefully they could diagnose and fix it by the afternoon. That's exactly what happened. By late Saturday afternoon I paid a very fair price for the repair and towing, and drove away feeling tremendously lucky and grateful. John the mechanic even seemed a little abashed that he'd messed up his addition and nearly overcharged me by 22 cents! Friendly, honest, capable, decent, kind. I can't say enough good things about my experience. We broke down in Troy traveling from NJ to VT late afternoon on a Friday. He towed our vehicle back to his place and made a good effort to get us back on the road that same day. In the end, he gave up family time (a huge sacrifice) to come in on Saturday when they are usually closed to finish up. If wasn't enough to make me smile, what he changed for this was very reasonable. This is a small shop with just two bays. It is an older building, but the equipment seemed modern enough. While there is a place to sit by the office desk, don't expect the lap of luxury. There is a small but clean bathroom in the office. If cigarette smell offends you, you will likely want to limit your time in the office anyway. read more

Today is Sunday . Car died between Vermont and Troy. Im a single woman driving alone from a 4 hour trip. No garages or dealerships open...I did NOT have roadside assistance, and and hour from my destination!!! I don't have AAA, but even if I did, when was the tow coming? I called one place and it was gonna be a 3 HOUR wait!!!! I got onto YELP and found Phil's Towing. Phil answered himself. "Yup, I know where that is, somebody will be there in 20 mins." I had an outstanding experience this past summer. Traveling from out of town through Troy, I blew a brake line on Rt. 7, Saturday Afternoon on Labor day weekend. No other shops were open, then I contacted Phil. We left the vehicle with keys at a restaurant, caught a ride to VT with family and Phil towed the truck to his shop and had the repair plus extra rusty lines repaired and ready for us on labor for our return trip. I made the terrible decision to try to back my car out of my driveway over the top of a snow pile that had frozen solid. Sure enough, I got stuck with my car blocking traffic on a narrow street. After calling two other places and being told I would have to wait until the next day for a tow, I called Phil's. They said "I'll be right there."... and they were. Twenty minutes later John had my car hooked up and pulled out. (Not easy on a narrow city street lined with cars and snow banks!) Amazing service and really helpful. To whom ever reads this, do not go here for any kind of service for your vehicle. Owner or whoever he was, was super rude and even on the phone before i got there sounded like he couldnt be bothered with me. Not sure if it was because of a long day, lazy worker, or he just heard an accent so he figured he didnt need to take me seriously as a customer. Im a health care worker and i had to take some time off just to bring my car here and this man tell me that because i was 5 minutes late he couldnt give me an oil change. I live and work like 40 minutes away and to try to get through rush traffic from Albany to Troy and then go right back into work after its very inconsiderate of him to have acted the way he did. Groaning and moaning like a child because he didnt want to be bothered with me. Hopefully we dont meet again soon in your local hospital but if we do ill demonstrate for you, what customer service is supposed to be like. Never again and i will warn my friends about this place as well. read more

This is, by far, the worst auto repair shop I have ever been to. I had my car towed to this shop, because the car could turn on but wouldn't move, and they said they would take a look at it and get back to me. Because I was a college student, I was often busy and couldn't follow up with them every single day, and because I didn't have a car anymore, I couldn't go over to inquire about the progress. Nonetheless, I called them multiple times, every week or so, and every single time they said "we've been busy, but we're looking into it soon!" or, "it's next on the list!" or, "the mechanic is about to look at it now, we'll call you back in an hour!" It took them nearly THREE MONTHS to finally look at my car, just to tell me what was wrong with it (transmission was shot). I literally had to wait eleven weeks for them to tell me that. They accurately assumed that because I was in college, I wouldn't be able to follow up with them frequently, and they took advantage of that fact to not even look at my car. I would recommend this place to exactly nobody. read more

We lost our brakes while traveling to Vermont from new Jersey. It was after hours Friday evening on memorial day weekend and raining to boot. Phil answered the call and came with his tow truck a few minutes later. He replaced all my brake lines and had my truck ready by noon on Saturday. My worst fears were unfounded as he got parts on a holiday weekend so I could head back home on Sunday. His rates were very reasonable compared to jersey prices and threw the tow in for free. My son, from Florida, broke down on Rt 7 in Troy, NY on a Thursday night. Phil's Auto Repair towed him back to their shop and started working to repair the problem. Being the worried mom in Florida, Phil spoke to me several times over the phone to keep me informed of what was found and the cost of repairs. Phil was fair and honest. Even though the breakdown experience was awful, Phil was great and I can't say enough good things about him.
