Made an appointment one week in advance to have an accessible brake line replaced. Dropped the vehicle off Sunday evening for a Monday morning appointment. Gil's kept the vehicle all week and never initiated any work. Service reps repeatedly informed me the work was about to begin. Vehicle was picked up on Friday afternoon at 2 PM with still no work initiated. Gil's inconvenienced me for the entire week, never called to report any issues or delays, and the service reps never understood the status of work. Five plus would be better! I took - my new to me- PT Cruiser to them as I just bought it a few weeks ago and just got it registered @ motor vehicle. So I stopped by To see about a New York State inspection, Tires (only had 6-7/32's legal but wanted better- winter don't ya know) and if they good get what I wanted in tires an alignment also. Told them that I was having a problem putting fuel in it - kept clicking off the pump. They were planning on closing early Christmas Eve - noon- so depending on what was found in or around the fuel system would be how much time and money it would cost. I told them not to worry I would be happy to leave it two days for them (12/22 and the 23rd) and pick it up wed. morning 12/24. Left the keys and car and they offered to take me home. Monday they received the tires I wanted at a price That was even less than the mail order Tire Rack cost (but they included the install & balance, discounted the alignment as I was getting tires! Found the problem with the fuel system, plugged vent filter and kinked hose. Car is a 2008 (Chrysler stopped production 2010) so hard to get parts but they found them. They should arrive on the 23rd, if so they could finish it on time. Long story shortened they did not arrive Tuesday, would be rushed to arrive morning of the 24th. I called about 9AM wed. still no arrival, but they said they would stay to finish it for me as that is what was promised. I called back about 10:30Am parts had arrived they would finish it for me. They busted "their stones" to try!! At 11 am called back and said "Go Home and have a good Christmas"! It made me feel like family. They are always closed Sat. So I picked it up Monday the 29th, about mid day. They care about customers, I am one and will be one, no need to even check anyone else out. Price was even 20 plus percent less than quoted. (1) Found out, as part of the last bill I received for a "diagnostic" of the work they did earlier, they charge more than $160/hour. Ludacris to say the least. The "diagnostic" involved a "test drive" for 1/2 hour. (2) After I paid $1,200 to fix an axle, they were nice enough to text me to tell me to contact them if I had "issues" that might be connected to their work; BUT... (a) finding a bit of vibration, I was concerned because repairs were on axle and required "alignment" (b) they charged me $81 for this 1/2 hour "diagnostic" that was supposed to only double check the work they previously did (reason I found they charge $160/hour in "Labor"!). (3) I have to give 4* ONLY because they actually did the fix to the axle ok; as "honor" requires me to acknowledge this. They also appropriately contacted the insurance company to pay for of the $1,200 original cost. BUT:(a) OVER PRICED labor cost,(b) charge me to recheck their own work(after they said I should contact them about it)!? Definitely would not go back to them!!!!!!!! read more

I would love to give them 0 stars if that was possible. I received my invoice and compared their prices for parts with another mechanic shop and I was apparently charged about triple the price for a battery and 5 times the price for the alternator. The mechanic I consulted with was angry with how they took advantage of me. Like most places they probably saw I was a female and didn't know what was going on. I think that you would be hard pressed to find an auto repair shop run as honestly and effectively as Gil's Garage. I have had my fair share of negative experiences with a variety of mechanics and I can confidently say that the employees at Gil's make it a point to do honest, high-quality work. While many auto body repair shops operate on a flat-rate system, paying their technicians only when there is work to be done, Gil's pays their employees a salary regardless of whether or not they find anything wrong with your vehicle. This ensures that they do not unnecessarily look for work to perform. I dropped my car off to have a wheel bearing replaced, as well as rear shocks and a new set of tires. The work was completed promptly and at a fair price. I did have a minor incident when I picked up the car and I was able to work with the owner, Paul, to resolve the issue. I do not have enough good things to say about Paul. He is a value driven man that recognizes the importance of building a relationship with his customers. When my car needed additional work beyond what we had discussed originally, he was willing to defray part of the costs of the repair because he and I both felt that it was an issue that should have been detected initially. In all of my years of owning a vehicle I have never had an auto repair shop take that stance, regardless of whether or not they were at fault. read more

My mustang convertible needed to be inspected. They were honest and up front about pricing. Registration lapsed due to being in storage. I gave them permission to drive my mustang 50-100 miles to pass inspection. Honestly HAPPY as a customer. No bogus repairs! Just up front honest service. My mustang is street legal as of today!!! AJ their technician took the extra time yesterday to explain. What was happening to the computer module in the mustang every time I disconnect the battery. My 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser (SUV) is one of my most prized possessions. I love the way it looks (no rust) and the engine itself is in wonderful condition, serving me well as a performing/traveling musician in the Northeast. Recently (February 2020) my clutch started to go as no surprise at 160,000 miles and I began searching for a shop to have a new clutch installed. The first place I brought it to was highly recommended, but unfortunately, the work that was done left me unsatisfied, as my newly installed transmission/clutch system began to make strange chirping/whistling sounds, which was progressively getting worse. I took it back to the shop to be looked at on two different occasions and I was told the first time that a few areas needed to be tightened and no other problems were found. The second time I took it back, the shop confirmed an issue with the throw out bearing but they wouldn't be able to work on it for weeks down the road. Enter Gil's Garage in Clifton Park: Since I needed to have some other critical repairs made such as replacing front struts, CV Joints, alignment etc., and the first shop I took it to only does transmissions - I checked the reviews and decided that I might take it up to Gil's Garage Of Halfmoon for an overall assessment/diagnosis of my vehicles situation and also get a second opinion on the recent clutch installation that was done. I have to say, I was totally blown away by how meticulous and caring the entire team is at Gil's Garage of Halfmoon. After dropping off my vehicle overnight - I received a call from Paul the next day to update me on their findings. He communicated to me every detail and even offered to send me a series of photos of what they saw with regards to the clutch. There was some very bad news with regards to a worn throw out bearing support shaft which happens to be a part of the transmission case/bell housing. I appreciated the directness and commitment to find a solution. Paul told me he would be seeking out a number of options to run past me. As a musician I am on a tight budget and this repair had the potential of being upwards of $2500.00 and that's just the clutch repair using dealer parts resulting in the repair being far outside my price range, forcing me to purchase a new car and begin making hefty monthly payments. After Paul made numerous calls/detective work to find a work around solution - he found a kit that would solve the transmission issue and have the pricing come in at a fraction of the original cost. I am convinced that I would have been extremely hard pressed to find a company such as Gil's Garage of Halfmoon that would truly go above and beyond in such a manner. It's obvious to me how passionate the Gil's Team is about their work and the safety of their customers. Gil's Garage gave my Toyota FJ and I a new lease on life. I found out later that Paul is the owner and he was simply helping out his staff due to vacation schedules. Most other garages would have told me it was time to purchase a new vehicle or overcharge me for a lesser repair, but what I am driving now is a new vehicle indeed! It just happens to be my 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser! :-) I just can't say enough how happy I am with the entire experience. I took my car to get a NYS inspection. I was called later and was told my break light was out and that they would replace it for $20. I said no thanks because I was confident I could replace the light-bulb myself. When I took the car home I tested the break lights and saw that they worked properly. Literally all of the customer ratings on their business web site (more than 1400 of them at last count) are 5 stars. That should tell everyone a lot about their relative honesty (or, more to the point, lack thereof). In my case, I was charged more than $1700 to have a fuel pump assy and module replaced. Parts were overpriced by $243 (30%) and labor amounted to a whopping $808 (an 8 hour job??). One would think that they would gouge their customers a bit less during the holidays. In short, avoid this garage and don't buy into the fake customer reviews. read more

After I made my initial one star review I received a phone call from Paul the owner. I called him back and we talked and he offered a $100 discount for my brother next time he comes in. I told him I highly doubt my brother would like to come back but that I would talk to him. The very next day before I even had a chance to talk to my brother I got another phone call. I told him I would be going on vacation next week so I would do my best. I was called pretty much every single day the first week. Called multiple times while I was on vacation that I had told the owner I was going on. Long story short over a month later these phone calls still have not stopped. I have spoken to Paul about 5-6 times where he has "tried to make things right". By offering a $100 coupon to his shop or even just sending myself or my brother $100 check. We want nothing to do with this. I have called back multiple times and left messages with his staff saying he no longer needs to call me. But he has me at a disadvantage because he has my cell phone number. I can only call the garage. I have taken time while I am working to speak with him. I am very busy I just don't have time to deal with his $100 gift certificate after his employees told us that the car needed over $1000 worth of work, that the tranny was broken, and that the car is unsafe to drive. We have been driving the car and passed inspection fine for over a month now. The car just needed brakes and I did the brakes myself. Paul knows all of this. I was going to leave this alone but last Wednesday I received another phone call and he said "We're trying hard here to make things right, but I don't hear much from your end" insinuating that I am the problem here. I'm going to include a photo of all the Voicemails that have been left on my phone. Each one of these voice mails are accompanied with at least 1 phone call but usually 2-3 calls per VM. I work all day I don't have time to clean up his messes. I will actually include two photos one that shows the name and one with the phone number because anyone could just go and change the name to a contact. The first time I spoke to him he said "we don't get bad reviews" and that was why he was calling. Now I understand why they don't get bad reviews. He calls them relentlessly until they change it, because these calls are borderline harassment. I really hate giving negative reviews but this has just gotten out of control. read more

While making the drive from Averill Park to Halfmoon, my tire pressure light came on while driving on 787. Normally I would just pull into a Stewart's and fill up my tire and be on my way, but something told me to have it checked out. Gil's Garage was across the street from where I was working that morning, and remembering all the times my friend had raved about their honesty, I pulled into the parking lot. I noticed that their lot was FULL of cars...and I was hesitant about going in for fear that that they wouldn't be able to look at my tires (which I was totally expecting to hear, and would have completely understood). When I walked in, I was greeted promptly and happily, and after I explained my situation, and that I was in a bit of a time restriction- I was told that it wouldn't be a problem at all. When I stopped back in after work to check on the car, it was taken care of! I'm glad I had it checked out...because I had a nail in my tire!! They patched it up...and price was great, too!!! This is a great place to bring your vehicle if you're ever in need of repairs. They have great customer service and they also take care of your vehicle correctly and I don't feel like you get to run around here. I'm going to tell you of an experience that I had this last time I was here, I came in to have them look at my brakes and drop the keys off in the Dropbox and on the keys I wrote do not do anything until you speak with me first and what ended up happening was they must not have saw the sign on the keys and the technician did all four of my brakes my pads and my rotors and did not call or speak to me. Now some people would think okay and you're saying this is a good place well I said it was good customer service. when I called and spoke to them they had said what they had done and I had told them what I had written on the keys and when they went back in and looked and found that that was truly what I put on my keys they ended up giving me everything for free. They run their business honestly they run their business effectively and it's definitely some place that I would go back to and recommend. I have gotten a lot of work done there before this is just the first time that this is ever happened and they took care of me the correct way and I believe they would do the same for you. By far the only people I trust with my car. Extremely honest and if you're a regular they'll take of small problems usually at no charge. I took my E-Class Mercedes in for years now for routine maintenance. At about 90 K I just assumed it must be time for front brakes and left it for new breaks and oil change. When I picked up the car and they said I had another 10K on my front breaks and didn't do them. How many places would be so honest ? This past year I made an appointment before bringing it for routine maintenance and also got tires. The prices are fantastic for the tires versus the dealer and local tire shops. By far, very shady operation. Front desk people are very polite, as they promise the world. Had some work done, or at least paid for it. They up sold me a bunch more stuff which at the time I trusted them, so I agreed and they did all the work, except for what I originally brought it in for. I think the mechanics forgot because it was clear the work was not done. So, dropped my car off couple weeks later (to do the work that I paid them for earlier) on Thursday night for appt. on Friday. They some-how never got to it when I went in there at 7PM Friday to pick it up. The end result was, I was without a car Friday thru Monday night. In the end they said they did the work but it was not done. Its not worth the effort to prove them wrong, as I just did it myself. Just be aware, as they will up sell you and not do the work. A couple months back my car was shaking/vibrating for no reason. After some research and knowing a little about cars, I found out it was the engine mount on the car. I didn't have the tools or the means to fix it so I asked around about who could do a good job for a good price. One of my old high school friends told my girlfriend about this place. I decided to try it out since it was a local shop. After walking in, I knew they would do a good job. They were very professional and took into consideration that I knew what I was talking about. They told me they would call me when I they confirmed what it was and if there were other problems. I received a phone call within the same day (approximately 4 hrs later) from what I remember. They gave me a quote which was right on par with what I expected and from what I saw online. They finished the job very quick/within 2 days and that was with them checking the problem right before they closed so it was really a day. It was a Weekend too so that was great. They met all my expectations and my car has been running great ever since then. I've gone on 3 trips to Virginia and back and still no problems. They have my business when I need my next fix. read more

I was not impressed with Gill's garage. I have been getting their flyer in the mail continually for the last few months, so when It was time to get new front brake pads the other day I decided to give them a try. When I had the pads put on 25 to 30,000 miles ago, all of the rotors were replaced. Of course you expect places like Midas or Monroe to rip you off, I had hoped this shop being an independent might be a little more reasonable. But that was not the case for brakes. They are just like any of the commercial shops and will tell you you need rotors, even when they're perfectly fine. Of course I wouldn't want the shop to not do a proper job when it comes to brakes, but these guys are a run-of-the-mill sell you everything new kind of shop. Instead of replacing the pads as I asked they put new rotors on too. The parts, even with rotors, can be purchased for about $70-$80. And it may have taken them an hour to change them on the two wheels. The total they charged for the work they did was $450. I think that's very excessive to charge that much for brake pads on a clean mazda. So I gave them a try, but I will never bring another one of my cars back there. They charge $95 an hour for labor, and believe me they will hit you as hard as they can for any repair. Of course these days, there aren't many shops left that will actually fix the problem without telling you you need everything new, but I still hold out hope that a local shop exists. While I haven't tried them yet, there is a shop called Jay's locally that supposedly will replace brake pads and rotors for $400 for ALL 4 wheels. At Gils you will be looking at about $1000 for that same work...... read more

Sent my ex there for an inspection and only an inspection on her BMW. They told her that the serp belt was rubbing yet there was no wear on it, I changed her oil for her so I know it was fine and I saw the tech come out from under the hood with a pry bar. I myself a certified mech know you don't use a pry bar for an inspection. She got a sticker and drove to my house and I checked belt. It was fine but idler pulley looked bent. Ironically the next day or so a hose blew so I replaced the bent pulley. I worked in auto business for 15 yrs never saw anything like this so take it as you may. read more

Excellent and a fair price, I just had my pickup truck in to repair the 4x4 transfer case. Just 2 hours after having the truck towed in, I got a call explained the service and parts required, which I thought would be the case, then another was explained to me, I was skeptical of this new problem and thought "here we go"! So I told, John, the service advisor I wanted to stop into look at myself, he eagerly said no problem. I was introduced to the mechanic who was working on my truck, Scott. He took me to the truck, explained the problem with the tie-rod ends. We talked for a good 15 minutes, I asked about another problem that I was weary of, he said this was also a common problem with '07 Silverados, and I had that repair done as well. I got the call a little later than anticipated, but received and apology on the parts arriving late. Great service, really clean, well organized and taken care of. EXCELLENT! Ive used these guys for a few years on my custom van,always a great job at a great price. This year I bought myself a winter beater,wouldnt pass inspection after I bought it. It had terminal frame rust,I thought the car was a goner and I just wasted a grand. These guys did the impossible-they actually FOUND the replacement frame parts and installed them at a GREAT price! I STILL cant believe they found the parts for this dinosaur! Passed inspection,drives like new,and should last a few more years. On a scale of 10,they get an 11!!! read more
