The crew was done with the sanding on day 1, stain on day 2, and final coat of poly on day 3 (~1,300 sq ft). A couple days later we could walk on the floors in socks, and a few days later we could move furniture in. A light coating of sand was left on the walls, but that was easy to wipe down. I have a three bedroom condo in a three family home built in 1905 and renovated in 2009 prior to purchase. With the house settling after the 2009 renovation there were also a few areas where the oak staves had separated. This review is about 3 years late, but I was going through my old emails and realized I never posted a review, and Phil's definitely deserves a review. We bought a house and had Phil and his team install hardwood floors on the 2nd floor and refinish the 1st floor existing hardwood before we moved in. We hired some other people to do some other jobs at the house-- paint, plumber, electrician-- and no one, NO ONE, was as prompt and efficient as Phil. He showed up when he said he would, and finished the job when he said he would. We had to chase around the plumber; meanwhile, Phil's calling us at 8 AM because his team is already at the house and I had forgotten to leave the door open. I showed up late one afternoon and there's like, 8 guys at my house laying floors already. They left it spotless when they left too-- not some big dusty mess either. Yup, I'll back that one up. Phil and Co. did a great job on our floors last fall and beat a couple other estimates we had. Ha is his wife, I think, she answers the phones. Not sure why they wanted you to make the check out to her name. They were really easy to work with. We changed it up and had our upstairs and downstairs done separately after the initial quote and they didn't charge us more to come out twice. We hired Phil and his crew to install new hardwood floors in our living and family rooms and to refinish floors in the dining room. We needed to get our floors done as soon as possible before we moved into our new home. We were supposed to have three weeks to get them done, but because of a two week delay in closing, we only had one week to do it. Phil was more than accomodating for us. He came in on that Saturday and Sunday to make sure that the floors would be done by the following Saturday, when we had to move in. Phil did a terrific job removing a carpet and refinishing a wooden staircase underneath. He came right on time, did the work exactly as discussed (for example, cut up the carpet and stacked it in neat taped rolls where it could be set out with the trash, as we requested), and did a careful, thoroughly professional job on the stairs he refinished: complete work into the corners, even coats of finish: fantastic result. Finally, he even fixed some small imperfections in other woodwork that we had which we asked him about after he had started our job. I'm writing a 5 star review because of Phil's professionalism and advice. We made arrangements to have him refinish our kitchen floor. When he came to start the job, he advised that the condition of the existing floor was such that it wouldn't be worth our money to refinish it, it was too old and thin to last. You have to admire and appreciate someone who basically advises against doing work because he knows it won't last - it's sort of like the car mechanic who advises against fixing brakes because the car is too old. Phil was very responsive and gave me a rough estimate via email since we had a basic idea on the square footage. We refinished the floors on our first floor this week. Phil got us in quickly, rates were reasonable, and the floors are incredible. We can't get over the difference - our 1940's house looks like new construction. After he finished the work, we noticed two small areas in the kitchen that didn't blend quite as evenly with the rest of the floors - I emailed Phil with pictures to ask if it would blend over time or if it needed to be addressed. As others have said, Phil was very easy to work with, he came out to do a quote right away and scheduling (via his wife over email) was very easy. He even managed to get all of the work done on time in the midst of our brutal storm period in early February. The work he & his crew did was excellent and the new floors are beautiful. So why did I dock a star? Read on. My fiance & I hired Phil to do the floors in our 1960s home. We tore down the wall between the kitchen and living room and remove the tile in the kitchen, so that we could lay wood floors throughout. The existing floors in the living room were in gleamingly-good shape, but had noticeable gaps between the boards (due either to age or a poor job laying initially.) Several of our friends who are architects told us that there was no way we would be able to match the floors and that we should lay down all new floors. My fiance really wanted to pursue that path and lay down new prefinished board himself, but I hated to think of tearing up perfectly good floor, so I had Phil come in. We specifically asked Phil about whether the floors would match or whether we should do all new, and he assured us that they would and that we should definitely keep the old floor-- he pointed out it would save a lot of money. Well, unfortunately, the floors definitely do not match. The actual seam where Phil laid the new vs old is not apparent, a testament to their good work, but if you look at one side of the room and then look at the other, it's obvious which floor is new. It doesn't quite match in tone or color, and the gaps between the old boards are even more noticeable now that they're against the new. Since this is our living room and kitchen the difference is not noticeable with all of the furniture in there, so at the end of the day it's not a big deal, but something to be aware of if you are trying to undertake a similar project and will be picky about the result. read more
