I highly recommend Tao. I was skeptical about having our floors refinished, but I'm really glad I did. I shopped around for 10 different quotes from Boston-area companies. Tao stood out for how knowledgeable he was. First, he was clearly knowledgeable. We recently moved into a new home and hired Tao and his team after reading all of his prior positive reviews. We are glad we did! Despite the house only being 7 years old, the entire downstairs hardwood and main stairway needed to be refinished (prior owner had a dog, didn't take shoes off in house, etc). Additionally, we had Tao put new hardwood on the second floor which was carpeted when we moved in. Finally, we had Tao patch and replace a water damaged area near our back porch. Throughout the whole project, Tao was actively involved and provided great advice. He advised going with a prefinished Appalachian red oak for the upstairs flooring, rather than unfinished wood and stain (due to the current price of lumber). This was a great suggestion and matched the existing downstairs floor almost perfectly. As it relates to the downstairs refinishing, I think the pictures speak for themselves - absolutely flawless. If it isn't clear, we are thrilled with Tao's work. The caveat to all of this is that Tao is not the cheapest option in the area, but like anything else, you pay for what you get. Taozen was fantastic. We had them refinish the hardwood floors in every room in our home before we moved in. Tao was super communicative. He was very clear that he would do whatever we ultimately wanted but was not shy about sharing his opinion (which we welcomed as we had never had hardwoods refinished before. Comparatively, other contractors we met with were more short and told us less about different finishes, approaches, etc. Based on his advice we pivoted from having a higher gloss finish (which is what we were used to) to something more modern and understated and it was 100% the right choice - we are very glad we listened to his advice. He clearly has done a lot of this and we appreciated his perspective. His timing was spot on, fit in a fairly large project into the time before we moved in, and was communicative throughout. We hired Tao and his team to replace the hardwood floor for our 650 square feet apartment and they did an excellent job. Our apartment is very old with lots of nooks and crannies, and there are many electrical outlets in the baseboards. Tao's team took the time to demolish the existing floors to the edges of the baseboards and cut the prefinished hardwood pieces into appropriate lengths so that they fit properly. They then covered up all the edges between the baseboards and the floors with moulding, which made the final finish look nice. Our floor used to squeak a lot and now it feels solid with no squeaky sound. His team was very professional and experienced, and they even accommodated our needs to move the furniture around by finishing the job in stages. Tao also gave us a lot of good and honest advice regarding which hardwood to pick and how to take care of the floors afterwards. Last month we were in a time crunch. Movers coming soon and we recently passed papers on a condo learning that master bedroom +walk-in closet had plywood under wall to wall, not hardwood. We got info/quotes from 2 reputable flooring specialists. Taozen & Goddard. Right away we could see great differences. Tao, the owner, suggested prefinished red oak, Algonquin brand. No fumes! No worries that it would not be thoroughly dry. He brought samples so we could see how it matched both in color & height to meet hallway hardwood. He suggested removing closet system, putting wall to wall hardwood in closet & later reinstalling. All in our 1 week time frame. Goddard, just opposite. Wanted several coats poly, would put wood up to closet system, brought no samples, said there would be fumes, etc. We chose Taozen. Fabulous job. We contacted Taozen initially for the installation of the hardwood when talking through the work he recommended refinishing the existing wood on the first floor as well. He did both and everything looks great, the refinished wood looks beautiful and the installation of the new floor went great. He was easy to work with. He tries to handle multiple customers as good as he can, this gave a little challenge in the communication but eventually all went really well and we are happy with the results. I recently bought a new (but nearly 100-year-old) house. It had gorgeous hardwood floors that no one had paid attention to in some time. They weren't in terrible condition, but they needed some love. After reading Taozen's stellar reviews here, I invited him out to give a quote. I chose him over other vendors for many reasons. He responded to my query promptly, and came out to the property to take a look at it. He was personable and respectful. He wore a mask, and he also took the time to teach me about my house as we walked through it. Apparently I had a floor of quarter sawn white oak, with gumwood wainscotting. He pointed out particular scuffs and gaps and asked me how far I wanted him to go in repairing it. He took time to answer my questions about the gaps I saw in the floor and explained how wood floors need to breathe and what that meant. He was able to start work super quickly--within a week of our walk-through--and his quote was in-line with others I received for three coats of satin-finish polyurethane. His team was also done just when they said they would be--in under two weeks for my entire house.
