This trailhead leads to a massive network of mountain bike trails that is only five minutes outside of Bend. The facility now has a paved parking lot with restrooms which is new. The skill levels of the trails range from beginner to advanced. I am not going to review each trail on this review but give you an overview of what your options for biking are from this trailhead. The Green (beginner) trails you will find are Kents Trail, KGB Trail, Marvin's Garden Trail, Deschutes River Trail, Larsen Trail, and the Swampy Lakes Trail. The Blue (moderate) trails you will find are Bens Trail, Kents Trail, Storm King Trail, Skyliner Trail, Whoops Trail, Swede Loop Trail, South Fork Trail, Grand Slam Trail, ELV Trail, MTB trail, and Grand Slam. The Black (advanced) trails are the Voodoo Trail, Phil's Trail, and the COD Trail. As you can see there are a large number of trails here to choose from. So Be sure to research for heading out. May favorite loops here are traveling up Bens Trail, up and down the Whoops Trail, and down Phil's Trail. Or up Marvin's Garden Trail, over to KGB Trail, and Down Phil's Trail. These trails are considered multi-use, for biking and hiking. But it's important to note that they are primarily used for biking. So if you are looking for a great trail to hike or jog, you may want to consider other trials when biking is most popular here in the spring and fall. If you don't you may encounter some conflict and near misses out on the trials as people tend to haul some serious but on these trails. There are a few etiquettes out here that many people may not be aware of that are important to take note. Some trails are directional while most are two-way trails. So keep a map with you before heading out to avoid a wreck. Typically the uphill rider has the right of way. So if you see someone struggling uphill just hop over to the side and let them keep their momentum going. If the trail is getting too muddy, you may want to turn your bike around to avoid creating ruts on the trail. We have sensitive dirt out here that is hard to maintain. If someone it right behind you get out and let them pass. These are just a few. If you follow them you should have a pleasant experience. Otherwise, you may encounter some conflict with others out on the trial. Here are a few links to help you understand the rules and social norms for this area. It is worth reading them over to make sure you don't get any tickets and have a smooth experience. It's also listed on Google Maps as its own destination. The falls are glorious. This is a real gem of a spot. There's a couple of small parking lots nearby. It doesn't take long at all to walk to the falls - they are only a couple hundred feet away from the parking. There's also a bathroom that is maintained incredibly well. It's super clean. Check out the beautiful Ponderosa Pines on this land while you are on your way to the falls! The Deschutes River is incredibly beautiful. This spot is magical because above the falls it's quiet and serene. The falls themselves are loud and boisterous, a high energy feeling. Barely saw any people here. The few that I did see were walking dogs, fishing, etc. If you're looking for beautiful waterfalls to check out in the area, while Dillon isn't the biggest you've ever seen it's really pretty and worth the very short walk it takes to get there from the parking lot. Only downside... and it's non-negligible... the roads going in are amusingly atrocious. Like really really bad. I've never seen so many potholes in my whole life. I'm not docking any stars though, because it's still just so beautiful I don't care. Worth it anyway.

One of the Best Parts of Bend Was Right Outside Our Hotel…read more While staying in downtown Bend, my family and I were looking for something outdoorsy and close by, and the Deschutes River Trail ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. What started as a casual morning walk quickly turned into a beautiful four-mile hike filled with rushing rapids, peaceful river bends, towering pine trees, and some incredible Central Oregon scenery. One of the best parts of this trail is how much the landscape changes as you go. At some points the river was calm enough for paddleboarders floating by, and at others the rapids were roaring against the rocks with serious energy and sound. The trail itself was also a nice mix. Some sections were smooth and paved, while others became a little more rugged with dirt paths, rocks, and small elevation changes that made the hike feel adventurous without being overly difficult. I would still consider this a very approachable hike for most people and fitness levels. We saw walkers, runners, families, and people out with their dogs enjoying the trail. Pro tip: bring water, especially on warmer days, because parts of the trail are fully exposed to the sun. Another thing I appreciated was how accessible this experience was from downtown Bend. We were able to walk straight from our hotel into what felt like a completely different environment surrounded by river, forest, and nature. We eventually wrapped up near the Old Mill District, which made for the perfect ending with shops, restaurants, and a chance to relax after the hike. Sometimes the best travel experiences are not the big tourist attractions, they are the simple moments outside on a trail reminding you why places like Bend are so special.

The river is not slow like midwestern rivers that seem to slow almost to a stop; instead, the Deschutes River in Bend still has a movement to it. In fact, some of the parks are specifically designed for whitewater sports. Opposite the river from Miller's Landing is Bend Whitewater Park, where designers have developed cascading falls to give kayakers a taste of rapids without actually endangering them. Miller's Landing was clean and well maintained, and similar to the rest of Bend, it felt like the park had its own HOA. A drive around Bend feels like a drive around the Truman Show, where every front lawn and city park is perfectly manicured. This implies that the city's parks and rec department is efficient, there are lots of regulations, or Bendites are passionate about perfectly cut grass and even layers of mulch. The absence of eccentric or creatively decorated homes lead me to believe that an HOA had a heavy hand. You wouldn't want anyone to show any creativity. It was as if the clothing company North Face had designed the town. I really appreciated the trial system that followed the river. My wife and I didn't walk the whole trail because we didn't have time, but it is something I would've loved to explore. Based on the map, the trail was not one continuous route along one side of the river. It wound from one side of the river to the other, possibly including sections of road. A run or bike along this trail would be a great way to explore the city and people watch.

In the winter when it snows, the parking lot is much farther away with the main road blocked off. The parking in this area is small, making it a challenge to find a spot on busier days. From this parking it's a few miles to the falls; about half way there you'll walk through the summer parking area. Even with the packed snow, it was a relatively easy hike as we saw families with little kids making it to the end. When you get close, there's a switchback trail up to viewing points overlooking the falls at various elevations; it's worth it going to the very top to see spectacular views of the valley you just walked in. There is a public restroom near the base of the falls, but it's closed when the summer lot is so don't expect facilities. Taking it easy, we spent about three hours here up and back with a break at the top. You really feel remote and far away, even though it's only a short drive from Bend. If you're a fan of hiking, this is worth your time.
