First family meal of 2022. We were craving puto (rice cake) and walked away with torta talong, lechon kawali, palabok, dinuguan, adobo, lympia, longonisa, beef sticks, gulay and turon. What started as a craving turned onto a feast, thanks to my generous brother! The first half of the Philtrade is a grocery with snacks, soup cups, fresh vegtables and anything you may need to cook up a filipino dish. A short stair case brings you to the floor where they do all the cooking from the kitchen in the back and the turo turo table of steaming fresh cooked dishes, so much food to chose from. The ladies cooking, cutting up vegtables, packing orders, glazing ham and piling up take out trays of turon all turn around and wish us a Happy New Year! Happy to tell us what they are serving and giving suggestions of their favorites. Everything was for take out. We returned home and prepared the table. Everything was delicious and enjoyed by the 5 different age groups at the table. Everything was still warm enough to eat without warming up except for the palabok which needs to be really hot, IMO. The longonisa was plump and juicy. The Lechon kawali was thick and meaty with equal portions of skin to meat, impressed with this serving. The palobok was pretty good, nice and flavorful. The dinuguan seemed a bit watery but surprisingly the flavor was there. The brown puto was fluffy and tasty. The torta was fine but not my fave. Don't forget to pick up a bag if pillows! Gem and hole-in-the-wall Filipino market in NJ. You can get your much needed groceries here (they have a small selection), and then go up some steps to a really small cafeteria where they serve food. It probably only seats around 15 people. My aunt took me here because she loves buffets and ..it might be because I'm from Vegas, but so do I. She brought us there on a Sunday in the morning back in February (pre-Corona times). On the weekends, they have buffets and I adore Filipino breakfast food. It reminds me of my mom's cooking. My mom would also only cook Filipino breakfast on the weekends, because that's when she had the most time to prepare it. The buffet had tosino, eggs, lumpia, longanisa, kare kare, isda, and more. I'm sure the menu slightly changes from time to time. Yum! Super good. Don't forget the vinegar. You can grab a drink from the fridge, but I would definitely bring your own water. Filipino food is pretty heavy.. This place reminds me of eating with my family on the weekends and I miss it already. Make sure to be early. Gotta catch that food when it's fresh! read more

Dropped by Philtrade to try their lumpia shanghai before getting a catering order. It's a small store, with a turo turo style cafeteria in the back. The prices aren't bad, but the shanghai was kinda dry, and the okoy was soggy, not crunchy. Picked up some sapin sapin, and it was solid. The selection of prepared desserts and grocery items was a bit weak in comparison to other Filipino stores, but if you're in a rush for ingredients, this place will do. read more

I like the place. Lots of parking options esp if you go there around the time we went (Sunday morning before lunch) by the street/behind the store. Nothing fancy about it just homemade comfort food. It's like you're eating in some tito's or tita's house with nice friendly faces around you. Lots of food variety. I was with my toddler and husband and they both enjoyed the buffet that this place usually have every weekend. I finished eating before them so I did some light food shopping within the store. Relax ambiance, people are in and out, and really not too crowded compared to Jersey City/NY areas that we regularly visit. The place was clean and medium size not too little or big to roam around, the service was fine, and right before leaving my husband paid both the buffet and groceries by the door so we left conveniently and happy. Philtrade is a little Filipino grocery store with a Turo Turo stand in the back. They sell all the sauces, condiments, and unique ingredients needed for cooking Filipino food at fairly reasonable prices. This is also the closest store where I can find the 25 lb. bag of jasmine rice from Thailand. Not much produce is sold here, though. I'm not a huge fan of Turo Turo (prepared food sitting in trays) in general but some of their items here are decent. The Tortang Talong (eggplant omelette) is good but it could use some more seasoning. I suppose that's where the banana ketchup comes in. The Lumpia Shanghai is a crowd pleaser with kids and for $3.50/dozen that's a pretty good deal. What I particularly like are the snacks and sweets, including: - Pork Asado Siopao - old fashioned steamed pork bun. The pork has the nice savory/sweet combination stuffed into a slightly sweet bun. - Ginataang Halo Halo - sweet coconut milk soup with taro, sweet potato, plaintain, Langka, and mochi balls. It's a comforting snack on cold days. - Biko - sweet sticky rice with coconut. One of my favs. - Kutsinta - sweet glutinous cupcakes (hard to describe...) -Cassava Suman - Sweet Cassava (yuca) and shredded coconut cake wrapped in banana leaf The ladies who run the store are warm and friendly. This is a no frills kind of store and what you would expect from a little Asian grocery. So when I need certain ingredients or when I'm in the mood for some Filipino snacks, this is where I go. read more

This is a secret gem in New Jersey. This place is a Filipino market with a kitchen in the back. You can usually grab a great deal for food for less than $8. On the weekend they do the buffet, which is amazing Filipino food! The buffet is self serve and you get your drink before you come to the dining area. Tried their take-away combo boxes. A generous portion of rice and two sides. Charged 5.00 per box so the price has gone up in the last year. Generally good but I find the meat dishes a little dry - especially the BBQ skewers - Mama Fina's is better in terms of quality of meat dishes. And there is no sisig! The selection was rather small, around 8-9 different sides you can choose from. However, their dessert flan is pretty good, although it's set out on an unrefridgerated cart along with other selections (some with open lids). The "restaurant" is basically a raised level at the back of their grocery store. The ambiance is definitely not the greatest - I would only do take-out here. It was nice but I will probably stick to a place that offers sisig. At the end two combo boxes, one flan, and one long 'strand' of lecon set us back around $27. read more

Love this place! Usually has what I need in terms of groceries. Go on Saturday mid-morning to get some baked stuff. No need to go all the way into jersey city. Saturday and Sunday mornings they have a breakfast/lunch buffet with a good selection. And on weekdays they have some great food you can take home. My bride and groom live above this establishment, which was previously owned by the groom's family. It went through a recent ownership change. They have a mini market in the front, and a turo-turo (you point at what you want) style restaurant in the 1/2 floor above the main floor. Marami silang selections! They also have karaoke night---what a convenient little place to cater to Filipinos' every whim! I was hella surprised to see the market carry Libby's Sandwich spread (mayo with herbs/spices), Nido powdered milk (I used to drink this as a child), a small selection of Selecta ice cream, Ovalteenies, Filipino videos/cd's, AND frozen bilimbi fruit (kamias --http://www.stuartxchange.com/Kamias.html). I have never seen any Asian stores in the West Coast carry bilimbi fruit. When I discover these little products that remind me of a story of childhood in the Philippines---I can't help but be taken back.... as in... a plasbak! My lola has a kamias tree in the back of her house in Bulacan, which is just as old, or maybe even older, than her house itself (at least 30+ years old). The fruit is very sour and used primarily in sinigang, or eaten with bagoong (sauteed shrimp paste) or salt. MMMmmmm. The tree would bear so much fruit that even neighbors try to steal some because they didn't think we would notice. I guess we could've sold the kamias in the local market, but seeing the tree in full bloom is a treasure in itself. My family is known to be too generous at times, so I guess we didn't mind sharing the wealth. I miss that kamias tree, which is still alive to this day, outliving my grandfather, my uncle, and my aunt. This was a delicious place! I got the buffet and it was authentic! Def coming back! It reminds me of a mom and pop place. It has it's homey feel to it. Granted it's not a fancy restaurant but it's a nice small place to meet friends and family. I just wish there was more space to sit and eat but I guess the current size is ok.
