My mother was Hungarian and I grew up to appreciate Hungarian cuisine, especially their smoked sausages. The Hungarian Meat Center, owned and operated by the Rozsa Family since 1988,specializes in everything Hungarian. The store is on the small side but upon entering smells of smoked sausages, garlic, paprika and cumin which permeate the air. When in the area, I stop in to pickup some Hungarian delicacy or another. This last visit, I bought a gyulai $16, Cseresz kolbasz $8, and a container of prune and apricot jam, $4.75 each. It's difficult to find Hungarian products in Northern New Jersey let alone at reasonable prices and at this quality level. I must add that their apricot jam has the right texture, no added sugar however the sweetness of the fruit remains. I love it. I came here for one thing : paprika szalonna. Aka Hungarian paprika bacon. But it's not really bacon as known in the states. And it's not easy to find. There's a place in Astoria that has it but this little meat shop in Passiac is better. How to eat paprika szalonna: You simply slice it and place it on rye bread. You don't fry it bc it's already cooked. The meat is tender and the paprika smoky. It's delicious. Trust me. The other way to eat it is to cut a square piece and pierce it with a stick to cook over a campfire. And have a piece of bread to catch the fat drippings. So I've heard. I never tried that but damn does that sound good ! I also got 2 links of smoked kolbasz. The thin ones that were hanging behind the register. I don't know the name but they are good. My brother calls them tv sticks. Bc , you know , you just hold one in your hand and chow down while binge watch Netflix. Think of it as a much better slim Jim. 2 for 8 bucks. The shop is a real hidden gem and family owned for decades. I love these shops. They close all July FYI! Yelp doesn't report that so don't go until they reopen in august. read more

The meat center is unique. Although the location is rough and the surrounding area is interesting, opening the door transports you back to an Eastern European butcher. The smell of garlic, paprika, cumin, grease, and smoked meats permeates the premises. Service is concurrently multilingual, prices are not bad, and the place worth a visit. While some of the sausages and meats are made in the store, there's a fairly large number from Bende and others making close to authentic Hungarian sausages. Their gyulai and cserkesz kolbasz -- particularly the spicy variations -- are to die for. The teperto is great. The bejgli is fine. The pogacsa can be all around the place. The virsli, debreceni, majashurka, and vereshurka are great. The sutnivalo kolbasz is probably the best I've had outside of Hungary. read more

quite disappointed at how small this "center" really is, but its rare to find a Hungarian butcher in North Jersey, so I'll take what I can get! They have a variety of Pick and Bende, which are fantastic purveyors of Hungarian coldcuts and various meat products. Love the Maggi seasoning and soups selection, along with mayonnaise and pepper pastes. Also, they have the Hero and Bende Chestnut Puree's, which, as any Hungarian knows, with a little whipped cream on top is exquisite! I drive from Westchester to come and get my Hungarian food staples. You can watch them in the back making the sausage! They have everything from bacon bits, to smoked bacon, to smoked ham. They carry all of the European cooking seasonings, like Vegeta and Maggi brand. They carry cheeses like feta and kashkaval. Homemade desserts are awesome. Love their dobos torta and Kremes. Prices are very reasonable, can't even compare to NY prices. read more

I am a NJ ex-pat who has spent the past 30+ years in Louisiana, and all of the Hungarian markets of my childhood have long since closed. Because I was here for Easter, I wanted to share with my family a traditional holiday meal without andouille sausage substituting for kolbasz. The Hungarian Meat Center provided me with smoked and fresh kolbasz and hurka every bit as delicious as I remember from my childhood! In addition, I bought an Easter ham, which was, without a question, the finest I've ever had. And best of all, they ship their products, so I can get szalonna and all my other favorites delivered to me in Louisiana! I can't recommend the Hungarian Meat Center more highly! read more

Once a pretty decent authentic Hungarian smoked-meat gourmet store, slowly has become a run of the mill butcher shop. The service is lame; you have to watch them at the register. They notorious to over- charge you! The meat is not properly cured...Simply is not ready to eat, you have to set it aside for a few weeks or months before you can eat it. This should be done by the store not you! When you complain they pretty much start arguing with you instead of helping you. They claim that the Hungarian pick salami is imported by the store. It used to be yes, but not anymore! Now they buying it at Corrado's in Clifton for half the price then they jack up the price. And Corrado's is buying by volume...usually products that is expired and pretty much ruined. So I'm no longer shopping at the Hungarian meat center! I used to spent close to hundred dollars every time I went there, but not anymore! Shop there at your own risk! read more
