Feels very nice and light, I know many schools feel dark and brooding, this one DOES NOT! And I came in knowing nothing about how to use a needle, and 4 weeks later came out and being told I have a very smooth insert! I loved Phil our instructor!! For the theory portion of the class, (which we had to do online) I had Terry as the instructor. He was very informative and placed us on the right track on what to study for the NCCT exam. For the practical portion, I had Joya. I absolutely love her!!! I have never met an instructor who loved teaching as much as she did. I truly wish more instructors were like her. When a teacher loves what she does, it really shows and the student can feel that. Plus you can tell that she genuinely care and love her students! How she handled herself on our very first blood draws really impressed me. She was able to boost our confidence everyday and eventually we were able to draw smoothly! Due to covid, our class was cut in half but it actually worked out because I felt like we were getting more of a private lesson. I feel like the instructor can focus more on us when theres only a few people. especially during blood draws. Shoutout to Thomas as well! He sat in our practical and one of our classes. He gave us pointers and expectations for our externships. I am grateful to have gotten extra training as well which he didn't have to do but did so anyway! I passed my NCCT exam and Practical. I went to this school in June 2017 and at first I was hesitant about the class because I wasn't sure if I wanted to do Phlebotomy. But all the staff and teachers were so kind and informative it put me at ease and I really enjoyed learning the content and doing blood draws. There is A LOT of information, but they teach you what is necessary for this course to prepare you for the State and National Exams. They also set you up with an internship at various hospitals or clinics of your choosing and it is a great experience because you get to learn different tips and tricks from other phlebotomist. If you want your license fast, you have to sign up for the National Exam at the earliest date. I believe they only offer it once a month and it takes about two weeks to get your results. After that, you can apply for your license online and mail all necessary documents to CDPH and from there you will have to wait 8-10 weeks. The wait it a bit long, but it is worth it! My classmates and I ended up getting our licenses around October 2017. So just be patient with it and try to do things timely and the school is always there to help if you need it. Overall, I enjoyed this school, not only because I got my license but because of each of the staff. They believed in all their students and wanted all of us to succeed. They made sure we turned in everything and if we needed extra help they stayed after class to clarify things we didn't understand. If you're looking for a good phlebotomy school, this one is for you! I attended this wonderful school June 5, 2017. I'm proud to say that I have received my training from Family Health Services Training Center, and I highly recommend this school. Here are my reasons. 1. You will learn what is important and necessary. Two weeks of lecture. Make sure to study your tubes and the additives it will be on the national exam. 2. You will be taught the right way how to draw blood. This school has caring teachers that will make sure you have the confidence to be out there in the working field. They will take the time to make sure you know what you're doing. Each person that is staffed at Family Health Services Training Center is a licensed phlebotomist. You will have more than one teacher helping you lean the steps. This is a big Plus! Two weeks of hands on with the understanding of how a lab works. Tammy was a wonderful instructor. Also everyone in your class is going to be at the same level as you are. So you won't have new students coming in each week. 3. Internship is 80 hours, the places to do your internship are well known Corporate labs, hospitals, or a small clinic. This is another big Plus!! 4. The school takes pride in each and every single one of their students. They want to make sure that you represent their school well. The school allows you to come back to refresh on skills or sit in on lectures. I have never heard of a school doing that. I love Family Health Services Training Center! 5. They also accept MyCAA it's a military spouse grant for active military of E-5 and below!!!!!!!! 6.Make sure you arrive early to find parking in Balboa Park. I loved how they enforced students to be punctual. There's nothing worse than starting late waiting around for late student. This school will start on time every time. 7. You will take your national exam(NCCT) at the school. The school staff members will help you with the any questions when applying for your CA state license. (f.y.i - your CA state license process takes about two months then you can apply for a job after you have received your CA state license) A side note when I did my internship at Paradise Valley Hospital just about every working phlebotomist was a past student of Family Health Services Training Center. I took this course back in September of 2022. I didn't really know what to expect but now looking back I'm glad I chose this school to do my phlebotomy training. I took the morning Mon-Fri full time course and I loved our teacher, Phil. He is a great teacher and is able to break down the lessons so that it doesn't seem so confusing. And if at any point you need clarification, he's there. It was great having him as teacher. Everyone there is there to help you. Where do I begin? I've been wanting to take this program for the longest, for like 4 years. When I finally had put the money together to take this program I decided to finally sign up and I literally do not regret it. First of all, Phil is such a good lecture instructor. I have never done so well on tests before and I was able to pass all his exams. I am not saying his tests are easy lol but he made me feel so motivated to pass the test. Everything he teaches is what you can expect on his tests as well for the national exam. I ordered a national exam booklet to study more but I didn't end up using it because the booklet the school gives you and everything Phil teaches you is enough to pass the national exam. Your classmates will become your friends at the end of the program. You guys start bonding by the time you have to draw on each other. You learn to trust each other. Now for the drawing instructor, Candice. She is such an Amazing instructor. She is so patient/kind and she is also funny. She makes you feel ready by the time you have to go to your externship site. Melania is also a kind/amazing person. She helps you find an externship site that works with your schedule. Candice and Melania thank you so much for everything and for helping/giving me advice during my externship. Phil,Candice, and Melania you guys deserve a raise! What to expect from the class: The first 2 weeks it's lecture and for those 2 weeks you have a test on Fridays. You need to pass those 2 exams in order to get approved to take the national exam. For your third week in class Phil does a review of everything you learned plus he goes over common test questions for the national. Then the fourth week you take the national exam. For your fifth and sixth week you start drawing. You do not dive in straight away to draw. You get to practice first on a fake arm. After that you start drawing on each other. You have a final test for the drawing portion. After passing it you get approved to go to your externship site. I decided to go to the MCRD, the best decision ever. You learn a lot there and you get the practice you need and plus Candice and Melania are there to help you out. I rarely write reviews unless I had a spiritual experience, good or bad. In this case, it was possibly the greateat doctor appointment I have ever experienced from start to finish, and I was only there as a preliminary for mental health referral. First, the girl at the front desk was pleasant and efficient while dealing with my less-than-favorable insurance putting her on hold. I didn't wait too long, the nurse who called me to the back was pleasant too. The doctor was helpful, affirming, and charming while making me feel comfortable, attended to every detail (it was the first time I didn't feel like filling out the questionnaire they give you was a waste of time), and never once made me feel less than equal or judged. The blood work I had done went smooth and seamless. I have small veins and am often dehydrated, so they frequently need to stick me multiple times, but this guy did one quick prick and was done so quick I never even felt it, not to mention the guy was so personable it felt more like chilling with some stranger in Rio than a flabotomist. While checking out and scheduling follow up, I discovered that they have an online portal where you can sign in and watch your records! I used to have that with an expensive doctor who took PPO's only but never dreamed of seeing that with medi-CAL! Then, in the end, I had forgotten my helmet and was let back in to retrieve it by a sweet, gentle, gorgeous Trans woman. Seeing her working there was by far the best part of the experience. I came in for mental health because it's hard to find trans affirming mental health with medi-CAL. Knowing this place has Trans employees makes me that much more comfortable feeling like I'm in a Trans affirming environment. I was blown away. Thank you to the whole team for the lovely experience. It's a scary thing to go to the doctor and you helped make it easier. read more

They seamlessly transition from the lecture to the practical portion, guiding their students every step of the way to ensure everything is done efficiently and safely. Whether it be a question regarding a procedure or simple question about something gone over during the lecture part, they cater to everyone's academic needs and manage to do so all while providing effective learning methods for all their pupils.
