We arrived a little before 6PM on a Monday with a party of 4 and the wait was about an hour. By the time we were seated, they were turning away diners, so make sure you get here early! The unfortunate downside for getting a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Butter Beef - beefy, garlicky, herby, tangy, sweet, it's got a little bit of everything. Very tender Trieu Chau Fried Rice - this dish is fantastic. One of the better fried rice dishes I have had. It has the wok hay and I would have been perfectly happy just to eat this as a meal Phnom Penh Chicken Wings - the first bite I had, I was not impressed. I dipped it in the lemon juice with pepper and it had some crisp, but was really lacking in flavor. Then we found a small pile of fried garlic near the bottom of the plate. That's where all the salt and flavor was. We put that onto the wings and they were quite good. Wish that was just set to the side at the beginning. Green Papaya Salad - this thing is packed with flavor. I liked it quite a bit, but I thought the beef jerky was an oddball ingredient Filet Beef Luc Lac - thinly sliced beef that is tender and covered in a silky sauce. It was quite salty so it went well with our rice. No major complaints about any of the food and I thought they had some pretty unique takes on dishes. Came early to avoid long wait times, around 4:30-4:45 there was still a 25-minute wait for 2 people. For a small party we only could really order the trifecta: chicken wings, butter beef and bo luc lac. Loved the chicken wings and butter beef. They're as good as everyone says they are and I can understand why they're popular dishes to order. The Bo luc lac was just ok for me. I've had better. Worth trying at least once. This restaurant is part of the Michelin Guide and is raved about consistently so I had to stop by and give it a try! The wait times can be lengthy, we went for an early dinner around 4pm on a weekday and still waited about 45 minutes. The ambiance is just as you'd expect, a traditional Asian banquet hall esthetic. They have large round tables for family seatings and it was pretty clean. There was nothing notable about the service, just the usual. We tried the buttered beef, chicken wings, and dry noodles. Buttered beef - this is one of the dishes they're well known for. I was skeptical at first just from the look, but can confirm it was really good. It's definitely one of the more unique dishes to try. I really loved the vinaigrette as it was a great blend of salty, sweet and savory. It paired well with the beef and the beef was tender. Chicken wings - this is another dish that is really popular at the restaurant. I LOVE garlic and there were heaps of it on top! The chicken is extremely crunchy and packed with lots of flavor. I appreciated that they had a small portion since it was just my husband and I dining. Dry Noodles - this dish was underwhelming and a bit disappointing. I love a good dry noodle dish, but the flavor in the sauce was bland. We decided to ask for vinegar and other sauces to add to the dish, but it just still didn't taste right. I finally made it to Phnom Penh and let me tell you...the wait was 90 minutes. Ninety!!! There is absolutely no way I would've stayed that long back home, but I was visiting Vancouver and figured I'd see what the hype was about. The guy running the door was clearly experienced and kept things moving from walk-in's, ppl who clearly had reservations to the dashers. He wasn't rude at all, but he had a very matter-of-fact demeanor. I noticed he interacted that way with almost everyone. Efficient? Yes. Warm and welcoming? Not really. Once I finally got seated, there was already hot tea on the table. Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't a fan. It also took a while before anyone stopped by the table. Throughout the meal, service was just okay. I had to ask multiple times to get water, which shouldn't happen. Now...the food. Baby, that's why people wait. The chicken wings? 10/10. Lawd, I was glad I stayed once those hit the table. The crunch, the sauce, the chopped garlic! And the butter beef? Also a 10/10. Absolutely delicious with the garlic, cilantro..soy sauce concoction that had a sweet component. I also ordered the filet beef luc lac, and that one I could've done without. I tried it before I was even full, so I know it wasn't because I had eaten too much. It just didn't do it for me, and I felt like I wasted my money on that dish. One thing I will give them is that once the order was in, the food came out surprisingly fast. My only other gripe and yes, I'm holding this against Phnom Penh is that the 90-minute wait meant Mello had closed by the time I finished eating. It was my last night in Vancouver, so they ruined my after dinner sweet treat. This is a noisy restaurant with customers talking over each other. This is a typical Asian restaurant so we were okay with the noise. Ordered shrimp papaya salad, beef carpaccio, fried garlic chicken wings, ton yum soup, fried squid, and fried rice to share. Portions were humongous. Being Vietnamese myself I had high standards for this restaurant being Cambodian-Vietnamese fusion, It definitely hit the mark! My favorite was the canh chua (sour soup) and butter beef!!! We had a party of 5 and could barely finish all this food. The butter beef melts in your mouth and is so flavorful. The canh chua is so well balanced and I loved the balance of veggies in it. I only hear great things about the wings here and being a lover of fried chicken I made it a point to stop here on my quick trip to Vancouver. We came around 4pm so there was no wait but by the time we left at like 5 there was already a line forming outside. We got the wings and veggie fried rice, and it took a bit of time for the food to come out but that didn't bother us. The portion for the fried rice was MASSIVE and could easily feed 3-4 people. It was good, nothing to standout but a very good classic fried rice. The wings came out after and were hot and crispy. It comes with a lemon pepper sauce on the side, which was super lemony - great if you like that but I wasn't too big a fan of it. The wings were juicy and fresh, though I will say I did expect a bit more flavor. There was only one piece at the bottom that had a generous coat of the seasoning which I thought was super tasty. A most stunning tasting experience, I had here at Phnom Penh in Chinatown. PP has been on my radar for some time & I finally made it here. PP has been going strong since 1985 - not an easy achievement in the restaurant industry. PP has that older type restaurant feel inside, but it is very lively as waiters fly by with orders to deliver to tables. Yelpies, order these three items & the say less while you wait for them. Butter Beef (Thinly sliced rare beef) Garlic Wings (heavy on the garlic - FYI) Filet Beef Luc Lac (Tender stir-fried beef) I had a Vietnamese coffee, but it was lame. I've had better elsewhere. We came on a Monday night around 5:30pm and the wait was already 45 minutes! The lady at the door said it's always this busy since they are on the Michelin Guide. By about 6:40pm, they were turning away dine-in customers because they close at 8pm and the wait was already 1.5 hr. Our family of 4 ordered 5 items: Crispy chicken wings (L), Butter Beef, papaya salad, Beef Luc Lac, and Trieu Cau Fried Rice. All the dishes were fine, but I thought the Butter Beef was the only one that stood out and was unique. Maybe my expectations for the fried chicken wings were just too high.... But I thought it was just okay, not even top 10 of the best fried wings I've ever had. The wings batter was a light fluffy batter, maybe made with tapioca starch? The chicken tasted a bit under-seasoned for me... but as you can see in the picture the garlic seasoning isn't evenly tossed with the wings, so some pieces had a lot of garlic and tasted great while others had no flavor. Portion sizes were definitely very reasonable for the price. We had maybe 1/3 of the beef Luc Lak and tiny bit of fried rice leftover. Overall it was a good meal, but I don't understand the hype ‍, and I wouldn't want to wait 45 minutes for this again. The sticky tables were a little bit bothersome for me. I grew up in Long Beach, CA -- home of the second largest Cambodian population outside of Cambodia so when I heard there was a Cambodian restaurant here, I had to try. Unfortunately, the night we decided to come for dinner came with an almost 2 hour wait for 3 people! Wild but we had committed so we went next door for cocktails and drinks while waiting. Finally, we were one of the last ones to sit down before the restaurant was going to close. I will say this one is different from the Phnom Penh in Long Beach. This one is a bit more Chinese influenced but we did try the famous dry noodle dish which I felt was good but not as good as the one in Long Beach. I will say the star of the night was the fried shrimp appetizer dish and the one that I consistently dream of so this one is highly recommended. The chicken wings should be called crack wings HIGHLY addictive. The deep-fried squid is prepared the same way as the chicken wings, and the calamari was amazingly tender. As usual, I'm late to the party. I've heard about Phnom Penh and its famous chicken wings ever since I moved to Vancouver, nine-ish years ago. My fellow Yelpers raved about this place when I first moved here, and my kid came here with her school pals 5-6 years ago and also raved about the wings. It's been on my list to come here forever - and last night, finally, I did. It did not disappoint. My kid warned me, there'll probably be a line up waiting to get in (they don't take reservations here. I checked), so we decided to go at an off-time and get an early dinner, around 5pm on Friday. We walked there and, miracle of miracle, there was no line and we got seated right away. (Granted, we got the last vacant table in the place, and when we left after our meal, there already was a line of people waiting to get in). Food-wise...wow. I am NOT one for adventurous eating, so there were dishes on the menu I couldn't comfortably order (I wish I could, but hey, I'm better now than I used to be!). Still, there was lots for me to choose from. And first and foremost, I HAD to try the famous chicken wings. And I can honestly say, they were the best I've ever had: SO SO crunchy and crispy on the outside, and hot and moist on the inside. OMG so so so good. I can't speak highly enough of these! My kid ordered the butter beef. It was tasty and soft ("like butta!"), and the marinade was lovely, but personally, I couldn't get over the...rawness and redness of the meat and juice (which looked like blood to me). For fellow non-adventurous eaters out there, this might not be for you, despite how flavorful it tasted. It was just hard for me to get over how it looked. (I know I'm in a minority here. This dish is one of their most popular and asked-for dishes). We had the garlic dry spare ribs. I love spareribs. These were delicious but a tad too salty and greasy. I brought most of them home and had them today for lunch. I gotta say, they were so much better for me today: less salty, and I blotted off the excess grease. Delicious! My kid ordered a "small" sweet and sour soup with prawns, and wow, it came in a huge black cauldren. I can't imagine ordering a large size. Anyhow, this soup was a stand-out soup - especially for my kid who said she had dreams about it all night (lol)! So complex in flavors - spicy, sweet, savory, chock full of prawns and sprouts and lotus shoots and pineapple chunks and and other delicious stuff.... For me, it was a wee tad too spicy, but wow, even I thought, this is a special soup. So delicious and warming. 10/10. Our servers were prompt and impressively able to efficiently tend to a full house of diners. They got it all down to a science here. One issue of note: my kid had to use the washroom at one point and she left for a very extended period of time. I actually thought at one point that something had happened to her or she was ill, she was gone so long (VERY unlike her). When she returned, she told me it was "quite a hike", around the back of the restaurant and up a flight of stairs, too. I only make note of this in case anyone has mobility issues, know that the bathroom will be difficult (or impossible) for you to access. read more

The bahn xeo and the luc lac beef was good and pretty standard. It definitely has a hole in the wall vibes that you know is going to have good food. The moment the aroma from their fried chicken wings hits your nose you start to realize why this place always has a line and how every list has Phnom Penh as a place you cannot miss in Vancouver. Even with skepticism, this place reaches the highs it so quietly can brag about. From first bite to last, it's hard not to smile with each bite. Let's start with the most obvious dish: the deep fried chicken wings are incredible. Similar to a salt and pepper chicken wing you can find at any great Chinese restaurant, the savory flavors enrapture you from smell to taste. A generous portion is given but if you end up finishing it yourself no one will be able to blame you considering how tasty these wings are. The Marinated Butter Beef isn't made with butter but with how tender and juicy as it is you'd think it was. Similar to a delicious carpaccio the thin slices mixed with the savory sauce and herbs leave a fresh taste on the palate, not something you can say often with beef. Filet Beef Luc Lac on Rice with Egg was a fantastic mixture of sweet and savory. It reminds me of a Cambodian version of bulgogi, I enjoyed having this mix of flavors and the vehicle of rice to carry it all home was enjoyable. The Green Papaya Salad was a great example of how generous the dishes are here. A plate full of julienne papaya in a light sauce and served with shrimp and a beef jerky makes this a burst of freshness. Highly enjoyable and a great start and palate cleanser. Phnom Penh Hot and Sour Soup with Fish is so tasty. I didn't think I'd enjoy this but it was a soup filled with different flavors and soft textures. Very comforting on rainy cold days and perfect for sharing. If you're looking for exceptional food that will always be a conversation starter when looking back at the meal, try Phnom Penh. We read so many reviews about this place and had to check it out while visiting Vancouver. There is always a long line so be prepared to wait no matter what time you arrive. The staff is excellent though and really tries to get people served quickly. Despite being packed, the staff navigates well to make sure the food is hot, freshly prepared, and served without losing quality. We of course had to get the butter beef (which is really the main attraction) and the fried chicken wings. Both were amazing as advertised. The beef was tender and served with salty and umami packed sauce. The chicken wings were jumbo sized and crispy from being freshly fried. Make sure to bring a friend because these are pretty decent sized appetizers. We also ordered the noodle platter with pork sausage, shrimp ball, and egg rolls. These came be wrapped and eaten together or enjoyed eaten separately dipped with fish sauce. Everything was excellent as expected. Maybe I went in with really high expectations because this place is so hyped. We ordered the fried rice, dry egg noodle, and chicken wings. The dry egg noodle was meaty and came with soup -- the pork bone soup was actually really good and probably the highlight of the meal. However, the dry egg noodles themselves tasted a bit bitter and lacked flavor. The fried rice was pretty bland; it definitely needed salt or more seasoning. The chicken wings were okay, but nothing outstanding. That said, the price point is good and the service was great, which I appreciated. A small and quaint restaurant situated in Chinatown is your typical family-run business in the MICHELIN Guide. We were able to reserve a table for the 6 of us a week in advance. They charged an 18% tip for reserving; which is a normal tip nowadays anyway. The food and service were quick and in the middle of dinner, they even changed clean plates for us which was a nice service to receive. The food is very authentic and tasty. PRO TIP: If you're planning on visiting during opening, I would be there 10/15 minutes before doors open- my family and I came right at 11 and there was already a line. We ordered the following: Beef Luc Lac Marinated Beef Butter Chicken Wings Canh Chua Tom I feel like everyone has talked about the marinated beef butter and the chicken wings and they're definitely a must! The sauce and onion/garlic topping for the beef butter pairs very well with meat. This dish also comes with a clear pork-based broth with a chunk of meat. As for the chicken wings, my family and I loved them. The batter is definitely on the lighter side and is fried to perfection. As for the other dishes, we thoroughly enjoyed the beef luc lac! The dish is sweet/savory and went perfectly with the egg on top. Although everything we ordered was fantastic, my personal favorite (besides the wings) was the canh chua tom! This was perfect for the cold weather. The soup was nice and sour with so many delicious veggies and shrimp. Even though it was super busy, the staff members were all very attentive and friendly! Tldr: BUTTER BEEF IS A MUST. Service: we rolled in at 7pm on a Saturday, and they had a 2hr wait.. lol. You should come here first before a year stops around the area and put ur name down. They were quick to get our orders and also put the food down. Ambiance: there is not seating for how popular this place is! Anyway, but its smaller than I had imagined, not exactly a huge place but it is pretty sizable and still not enough because of how popular they are. Food: out of the three things I ordered, definitely the butter beef is an order again 10/10. The beef stew is mid 6/10 but good enough if you are reaally craving it., and I could skip the banh beo altogether. I wish I had ordered the fried chicken, but I've read mixed reviews. Came here on a Thursday 10 mins at opening and there was already people inside dining. We were seated promptly. Service was good with servers attentive and food coming out fast. For food, food we got the 2 most popular dishes. Butter Beef 4.5/5 This dish is good, has a deep savory sweet flavor and the raw beef texture I loved. It didn't feel dirty or off putting at all. The sauce is what made this dish great. The bits of fried onion on top was a great combination. I enjoyed this dish. Chicken Wings 3.5/5 I had high expectations for the wings and because I haven't had fried chicken in a while but these wings were barely crispy. I wanted to get that nice crunch into the bite but was disappointed. Seasoning wise, it's good, nothing crazy or special. But paired with the lemon sauce, it was awesome. The acidity definitely help cut through all the fat and made this a bit more balanced. Wasn't blown away by the dish, just ok. Overall would recommend to check out. This has been the it spot in Vancouver and they received a Michelin bib gourmand so I had high expectations! We ordered the most popular dishes, the fried chicken, butter beef, and the beef filet (bo luac lac ) with egg. I was hesitant with the beef since I'm not a fan of tartare but this was so good! The sauce they have on the beef is sweet yet tangy and the beef was so soft! I highly recommend this unique dish to try. I also enjoyed the fried chicken wings. It was fried nicely with a light batter. It was sweet, salty, and peppery. It was a subtle flavor that I really enjoyed. The beef filet was a little disappointing for me because I felt like it was missing something. Toward the end of the dish, I added some hot sauce and poured some of the fish sauce on it and it made it so much better! I thought I would have to wait forever so we came 30 mins before opening and it was fine. We could've showed up right at opening and we'd still get a spot. Very solid Vietnamese/Cambodia food. My wife and I heard many great reviews about the butter beef and the chicken wings, so when we visited Vancouver, we had to try it. It did not disappoint. The butter beef was amazing. The beef was very tender and it seemed to be dressed with a soy based sauce, where usually when I order this dish at other restaurants it's a clear fish sauce based sauce. There's some bright acidity to cut some of the saltiness topped with fried garlic for texture and herbs for freshness. We ordered a small order of chicken wings and felt like it was a pretty generous portion for two people. We saw some other tables order the large, and felt like it could easily feed 4-6 people. It was very crispy, and wonderfully seasoned. Very solid. I love this place, and will definitely be back when I'm in town. read more

Often times when a place is highly touted it falls flat because its reputation is too strong and expectations are too high Not here. This places its great. It's a hole in the wall and is a throw back to 80s style Asian restaurants. But it's unapologetic and fantastic at what they do. We got their most popular dishes: Marinated Butter Beef: our favourite dish. The sauce is very tangy and strong. Mix the beef with the sauce and coriander for a delicious bite. Save the sauce and mix it with other carby dishes to elevate those dishes as well Dry rice noodles: delicious with a great sauce. Must have. Filet Beef Luc Lac on Rice with Egg: my second favourite dish. Make sure to mix in the sauce they provide to give this a tangy depth of flavour. Excellent mix with the creaminess of the running fried egg and the beef. Phnom Penh Deep-fried Chicken Wings: Delicious unique flavour. I don't know how to describe it. But it's not available anywhere else. Try it and have it with the sauce. Trieu Chau Fried Oyster Cake: the only miss for me. It's standard to what can be found in chinese restaurants that serve this. Also it's too oily but that's how the dish is. Service is very friendly and helpful. They stopped by a few times to give us tips on how to eat the food to make sure we got the best experience.
