fat mao was busy when we visited around noon on a sunday and we ended up sitting at the bar. the space has a casual, modern feel with an open kitchen and a pretty lively atmosphere. unfortunately, there was a strong burnt grease smell hanging through the restaurant that was hard to ignore during the meal. our party of two ordered the khao soi chicken curry ($24) and the braised duck noodles ($26). one thing fat mao does well is the freshness of the ingredients. both dishes came with fresh bean sprouts, a lime wedge, cilantro, and a choice of noodles, which added nice brightness and texture. the presentation was appealing and both bowls looked carefully put together. i had the khao soi chicken curry with clear rice sheet noodles, those soft, silky, wide translucent rice noodles, but they didn't really unfold or separate nicely and felt like they may have been slightly overcooked. the broth was a rich, creamy northern thai style curry with crispy noodles and pickled mustard greens. while it had good flavour, it leaned a bit salty overall. the braised chicken leg also didn't taste freshly cooked, which was disappointing. my friend had the braised duck noodles with shanghai wide noodles. the aromatic soy broth was comforting and the duck was tender, though the seasoning again came across a bit salt heavy. overall, fat mao was okay. the fresh garnishes and nice presentation were highlights, but the strong saltiness, chicken that didn't taste freshly made, and the lingering burnt grease smell took away from the experience. not a bad meal, but not one i'd be in a rush to go back for. read more

Tried the century egg tofu appetizer, as well as the hot and sour seafood noodles and the duck noodles. The standout to me was how good the shrimp in the hot and sour seafood noodles was! I ended up switching noodles with my friend as we liked each other's better and she asked if we'd like to have additional bowls for sharing since she remembered our original order! I think because there's a large mirror so it appears larger or something The food: I got the Khao Soi Chicken Curry which I loved. The menu description of it is Braised chicken leg in a rich and creamy northern Thai style curry. Pickled mustard greens and crispy noodles garnish. Came here because it's in the same complex as the Sheraton Wall Centre, where I was staying while in town. The inside is cozy and welcoming--lots of small tables and noodle bar seating, so it's great whether you're solo or with a few friends. The noodles are legit. We ordered the Khao Soi and Nham Ngeaw. Both soup noodles were on point, with complex flavors layered beautifully from the broth prep to the garnishes. You can tell there's care in how each bowl is built. It was one of (if not) the best papaya salad that we've tried. It had a great crunch/texture and some solid heat. The peanuts appeared to be dry roasted which added a really nice flavor to the dish. Each family was planning to pay their own, and so the automatic gratuity was waived. We ordered: Khao Soi Chicken Curry $24 - tasty and not heavily creamy. Braised Duck Noodles (with rice sheet noodles) $26 - tender duck quarter leg, soup was very dark like soy sauce and unexpectedly sweet? Braised Beef Noodles $24 - beef was very tender. Zab Pork Noodle $24 - at regular heat, it was notably spicy, but the milder version had a more pleasant balance of sour and spice. Pork rib meat was very tender. Hot & Sour Seafood $25 - moderately spicy, included 3 pieces each of fish balls, squid, and shrimp. All of these items were in a broth. Oberall, there was a good balance of protein, vegetables and noodles in each bowl. It was nice that none of the food was overly salty or made us thirsty. To end our meal, we shared a Fat Mao Shaved Ice $12 - a bowl of coarse shaved ice over a small amount of panna cotta, surrounded by tea flavored jelly cubes with Thai tea syrup poured over. While not a big fan of tea flavored desserts, this was actually light and refreshing to have, especially if you needed to cool off from a spicier main. The service was generally good. I had been looking forward to trying Fat Mao for a while and heard many people rave about it. I was pleasantly surprised to find this secondary location that we didn't know about. We got the Beef noodles ($23) and Khao Soi chicken ($22), and honestly we were disappointed. Not only was it very expensive, it lacked flavour which was shocking considering how good it looked. I generally love beef noodles and we found ourselves adding spices to be able to finish the soup. The restaurant is small and cosy inside and was pretty busy for a weeknight. This was by far the best meal we had in Vancouver during our vacation. It reminded me very much of one of my favorite Thai places in Los Angeles' Thai town (Pa Ord Noodle). Both times, we ordered the Braised Beef and a special pork bowl with spare ribs, pork balls, and ground pork, which we had both served with rice noodles. First of all, both were excellent, but I thought the Braised Beef was better overall. Both broths were excellent and they give a fair amount of food which should easily fill you up. Also, service was always good. However, the place is on the smaller side and it does get busy so you might have to wait. We didn't make any reservations, so I'm not sure if they take them, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to make reservations if they make them. We really liked this restaurant and I highly recommend checking them out if you're looking for good Thai food. read more

This restaurant was close to our hotel so we decided to give it a try. We couldn't really tell what kind of Asian food they serve but walked in. The restaurant isn't huge but we were greeted immediately and got a table. The menu consists of some strange fusion soups we have never tried, which is Thai. My parents do not eat spicy food so there were only two choices that were not spicy. One was the braised duck and the other was similar to beef brisket. I had the special which was like a Vietnamese broth with pork meatballs and ground pork. You can also choose any type of noodle you want. The soups were tasty but I thought a little pricey but maybe that's how it is in Vancouver downtown. Service was good, a few young girls but very efficient. Great spot downtown with a single vegetarian noodle soup option that can be made vegan with minor modification: the vegetarian khao soi ($22 plus tax). All soups come with a choice of noodles (2 rice noodle options, 2 egg noodle options, and glass noodles). I went with the wide flat rice noodles that you often see in (authentic) Thai noodle dishes (like pad see ew). It took about 10 minutes for the soup to come out, and oh man is it rich. The broth is decadent, with rich curry, balanced between sweet and savoury. You get tons of tofu puffs, cauliflower, pickled vegetables, cilantro, bean sprouts, and of course the noodles. Large portion, very filling, and quite satisfying. I'd say the saltiness could be toned down a bit; the pickled veggies contribute to this. But all in all, very tasty. Very friendly, attentive staff. First real meal in Vancouver and it did not disappoint! Found this place through Yelp as it was near our Airbnb, and went at an off peak time so it was not full. Started with the roti and curry, roti was rolled up cute like a fish. Curry sauce was good as well. Ordered the vegetarian khao soi and a beer. We came here after a long day of walking around Downtown Vancouver and it was just what we needed! We heard so much about Fat Mao through friends and through TikTok so we had to check it out. Supposedly, this location is better than the location in Chinatown At 6pm on a Tuesday, there were several open tables. However at 7pm, we had to wait about 15 min. before being seated. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not take online reservations, and only have a physical sign-up sheet at the restaurant. We ordered the roti appetizer, Tom Yum Seafood Noodles, and Khao Soi Chicken Curry with an extra portion of noodles and broth. The roti appetizer was good way to whet our palate with something savory, and the portion size was decent for one person (about six pieces of roti). For an appetizer, it was also very affordable. One of us thought it was so good that they went back and ordered another one. Keep in mind that the sauce used for the roti is the same broth as the Khao Soi Chicken. The Tom Yum Seafood Noodles were just okay. The broth was too salty, but the seafood was cooked well. The waitress recommended vermicelli noodles, which are known to pair well with this broth, but we got the wonton noodles instead. We have a hunch that the vermicelli noodles would've been much better. The Khao Soi Chicken Curry was the perfect combination of sweet and salty. I was a huge fan of this broth and the chicken was very juicy and tender. It also came with some sort of dried crispy noodle garnish that tasted good while crunchy, but quickly got soggy resting in the broth. We ordered the Shanghai wide noodles with and they were very chewy and matched the broth well. The noodle portion is generous as well. In the photos, this entree may look smaller, but I'll explain in the tips section why! (TLDR it's not actually smaller, but I forgot to get a picture of the original dish) The interior of the restaurant was small and crowded, but it didn't hinder our ability to converse at all. Washroom: The washroom was functional but a little dirty. However, we didn't expect anything grand going into it. Tips: - If you're not hungry enough for your own noodle dish, order with a friend and ask for additional broth and noodles on the side (around $13 CAD)! They separate the extra broth from the extra noodles so you can create your own mini bowl :). The only caveat is that you and your friend will need to order the same broth. This is what I did for the Khao Soi Chicken Curry! (Photo attached) - The waiters are so sweet and will gladly split an itemized bill. I loooove Thai noodle soups, so a visit to Fat Mao quickly rose to a must do while visiting Vancouver. We had such a hard time deciding what to order because truly, everything sounded amazing, but we decided on the following. Tom Yum Seafood Noodles: SO good with in your face flavor, and I was seriously so impressed by the perfect texture of the shrimp and squid, both of which can be so easily overcooked by just breathing in their vicinity. All of the vegetables in it were also super fresh, and served as the perfect crunchy, fresh contrast to the rest of the dish. Nham Ngeaw: My partner chose this dish, mostly because we had never heard of it. We both enjoyed this, especially with the tomato flavor, but I preferred my seafood noodles over this one. We came on the early side - around 5:30pm and the restaurant was already busy. I saw Khao Soi Chicken Curry on the menu and knew that was it for me. I love khao soi and having a braised chicken leg in that broth was amazing. The meat was so tender and fell right off the bone. I splashed curry broth all over my clothes but it was worth it! Husband ordered the Hot and Sour Seafood noodles and gobbled that one up. He said he would come back again and a couple of nights later, we did! I was agonizing over whether to order the same dish again or something different like the beef or duck noodles. I couldn't resist that curry broth though and wound up getting the tofu and cauliflower khao soi. It was good, but the one with chicken was better. My husband opted for the Tom Yum Seafood Noodles this time around. He enjoyed it, but between the two, preferred the hot and sour because it was more unusual. This was my second meal of Vancouver visiting from California. Honestly one of the best roti I've ever had.. maybe because I'm from the states and we don't have this type of food but it was amazing.. I don't think I've ever had a roti this crispy in the 626. The Thai tea was super refreshing, I've had better but you really can't go wrong with it. The duck noodle soup was something different that I haven't had before.. sure we have Korean style duck noodle soup or Chinese boiled duck noodle soup but this was definitely way more flavorful. The duck even fell off the bone! The noodles itself were so fresh and bouncy el dente as you would say.
