To begin, I'm a chef specializing in Asian cuisine, so I know what I'm talking about! Last night we went to Hestia and ordered three items. The Garden Rolls were absolutely the #1 worst ones we've ever eaten! We've had hundreds of fresh rolls at dozens of places and sadly, none were as tasteless as these. They consisted of noodles, a bit of flavorless tofu and cucumber. Fresh rolls MUST have at least one or more of the following: fresh mint, fresh cilantro or fresh Thai Basil. Hestia's had NONE!. To add insult to injury, the watery sauce also had NO flavor. To add more insult, they were baggy and poorly wrapped and the innards kept falling out. Not fun and definitely not good. The king oyster mushrooms were very good, but there was a ton of pink mayo dousing it. I would have preferred the sauce be in a separate bowl so we could choose how much dipping we'd like to do. The saffron tofu bowl was sensational! Perfectly spiced and full of a huge variety of well-cooked veggies plus the saffron rice was good too. No one came during our meal to ask if we needed anything or to ask how our meal was. The customer service is in need of some work. read more

We visited Hestia Veggie last night and had a unique dish. It was crispy "duck," which was made of filo dough wrapped around mushroom and some other stuff(?) that was fried and drizzled with hoisin sauce, served with carrot, celery, sprouts and cucumber strips, all of which are self-wrapped in a thin pancake moo shu-style. It was filling and delicious! We followed that up with sticky rice and mango that was also unique thanks to the additional of toasted sesame. This a fun little restaurant with clever, creative food and a hostess/waitress who is a real character! A great plant-based choice in Vancouver. read more

Food here is South east asian influenced, I was excited to see Laksa on the menu! - Spring rolls 3/5 The outside didn't taste properly cooked, it was all boils and really chewy instead of a crispy flakey easy to bite into roll. - Eggplant clay pot 4/5 This was a favorite for the table, but the sauce does get overpowering half way in. It is quite tasty though, eggplant is cooked well and the faux meat tastes more like bean curd. - Laksa 3.5/5 Grew up non v and eating laksa, and having that experience, this doesn't quite hit the mark for laksa. Granted, a seafood based soup dish is hard to recreate in flavors. Think of this more as a mild curry. Not a huge fake shrimp person, but table did think it was impressively similar. Service: Very sweet people who work here, friendly and inviting. Ambiance: Came for valentines and strangely it wasn't busy, just a few tables were full. Clean, modern. Strangely there was dub step type music playing which was a weird mix with the environment and food. Hope they are popular at other times, definitely awesome to see more creative v places. read more

Round 2 and I was not overly impressed. I read the review from Matt and it pretty much summed up my experience. I came at 4 on a Wednesday. There was 1 table of 3 and still, the service was slow. Not even slow. After he took my order and dropped it off, he left me alone. I waited 15 minutes after my meal and finally interrupted his conversation with someone else to ask for my bill (and he offered a refill on water). I decided to get their Laksa soup (Curry, tofu, mushroom, bok choy, vegan meat, cauliflower, kale noodle). The dish is beautiful and offers a ton of veggie and noodles. The vegan meat was 2 pieces of vegan shrimp. The soup was pretty flavorless. It was so mild and needed hot sauce or even salt. Not very authentic and definitely missed the mark. I also got their spring rolls (I loved them last time). They came oily and warm! It was not a good experience and really bums me out. We need more vegan options but at these prices, the dishes need to be mid at least. read more

I was pleased with my visit to The Hestia. All the dishes had great flavors and decent portion sizes. I honestly couldn't tell the difference with the vegan meat, and it was super tender and yummy. The crispy summer roll and papaya salad were my favorite dishes, they both had great levels of crunch and paired perfect with the sauces . Loved the super fun presentation of the storm noodles. The dan dan noodles tasted amazing except I noticed there was a small piece of plastic in there after biting in (it felt like a bone but I remembered it was vegan meat so upon inspection that's when I noticed). I also appreciate how our server was very attentive and patient, even though she was busy attending all the other tables at the same time. read more

I went back to try their pho, specifically their Bun bo hue ($18.50), an overpriced, mediocre version of the classic dish. The portion is fine, but the broth is lacklustre and they're not very generous with the toppings -- one piece of broccoli, two measly pieces of bok choy, a piece of cauliflower, some tofu, a couple pieces of vegan beef and vegan fish slices, with the usual round noodles that I'm not a huge fan off. They serve it with a regular metal soup spoon rather than a proper Chinese/Vietnamese soup spoon, which makes it more difficult to drink the soup. Service was lacklustre again, with one guy running the packed restaurant. They still need to figure this out apparently. I want this place to succeed, but so far I've been less than impressed. read more

Visiting Vancouver from LA where there are many delicious vegan options, I was excited to try The Hestia Veggie. It was hands down one of the best Vietnamese plant based restaurants I've experienced. The food, presentation, servers and ambience were 10/10. Going back again before I leave to try more items from the menu! If you enjoy authentic Asian flavors and culture this is the spot to try. I'm glad I got the chance to try this place! We made a reservation (at least, I think we made a reservation since I never received a confirmation), but it wasn't necessary as the restaurant didn't get too busy. Decor was minimal but comfortable and the soft music playing in the background was relaxing. The two servers got mixed up and brought one of us the wrong entrees, but they were nice and chill about replacing it. I ordered a lychee iced tea, eggplant claypot, and cheesecake. The lychee iced tea wasn't a super sweet drink, it was a smooth black tea with subtle lychee flavour and pieces of lychee fruit. Nice and refreshing. The eggplant claypot was really god - the "vegan meat" (probably made from soy protein) was crisp and tender, and soaked up the delicious sauce so that every bite was a mouthful of flavour. The menu description definitely doesn't do this justice. The friend I was with ordered the caramelized tofu claypot. I had a taste of the tofu and it was also delicious, and my friend sad he really enjoyed it. Both claypot dishes came out sizzling. Mine came out a few minutes before my friend's, possibly because that was the one they had to redo, but it was still hot by the time his came out. Finally, the cheesecake was a nice way to finish. It was very dense and the bittersweet coffee flavour was perfectly balanced. The portions are pretty filling so that value is good, especially for a meal downtown. I would love to come back to explore more of the menu since I'm always happy to support good vegetarian businesses and their dishes all sound interesting! read more

After a week of traveling we needed vegetables and this was perfect. Nice service, chill music, and great food.

Very healthy and flavorful food and attractive presentation. Chill environment but the music was a single 30-40" loop that we had to endure the entire 55' we were there....and seemingly was being played all day. I can't imagine working there with that, but perhaps i am overly sensitive to the music. We loved this food! Tried a couple of dishes - glazed tofu and vermicelli with vegan meat bowls were both delicious. Different textures, highly flavorful, amazing condiments (hot oil and garlic.) Everything I've tried on the menu is surprisingly full of flavour and interesting textures. The Crispy Summer Rolls (which, interestingly, are "double wrapped") and the Eggplant Claypot are particularly delicious and satisfying. The space is very clean and gets lots of natural light. Went there with friends for the first time since I am vegan. Only one server (I presume the owner by the way she acted). Very much in your face trying to impress you about her gratitude for eating there, but it was inappropriately unconvincing and overkill I thought. I ordered the clay pot eggplant and asked if she could substitute the rice as I am allergic to rice. She substituted with noodles on the side. The dish included vegan meat (which is often processed) but whatever kind this was, it was hard and tasted like leather. I could not eat it. Not once did she come over to inquire about whether the food was to our liking (as is often done in most restaurants). I ate hardly anything. When it came time to pay, this server (the only one working in the restaurant) asked me if I wanted to take the rest home. I said I did not because I did not like it. The dish was $18.50 and she charged me full price anyways even though I hardly touched the food. (Most quality eating establishments will make adjustments if you did not like the meal.) Not this place. She even tried to charge me extra for the noodles that were substituted. Other customers came in and we were ignored because she was too busy trying to accomodate everyone single handedly. All in all an unpleasant experience for me on all levels. I found both her and the restaurant unprofessional and the food terrible. Will definitely not go back. read more
