Instead of a balanced mix of pickled vegetables and thinly sliced meat, this was dominated by chopped white onions with large, unsliced chunks of meat -- more of an onion sandwich than a banh mi. Hearty and quick service! Viet Sub is a popular place for workday lunch. Their price is very reasonable. I tried their BBQ Sub and it's filled with well marinated meat and pickles. The pickles tasted a bit gingery. The baguette is on the softer side. It's a good for those who always hurt the top of their mouth when having banh mi lol. I stopped by Viet Sub after walking by dozens of times. I got the special Bahn Mi for a reasonable $8.95. The restaurant is s and cozy, and seems very geared towards take out. The sandwich was promptly served up and well packaged. The meat was warm and flavourful while the vegetables were crisp and just the right amount of tart. Viet Sub on Robson St downtown, absolutely delivers via delicious subs! My go to is the Lemongrass Chicken Sub. It's made quick, with an appetizing appearance & most of all - tastes super fresh. There's nothing fancy about sitting in here but that's not why I come here. The quality is supreme & that's all I want in a quick lunch time bite. I missed out on Vietnamese history way back in the day. I did not realize that the French ruled over Vietnam at one time. Hence the awesome fresh baguettes, used at Vietnamese restaurants. I will definitely be trying out other menu items over the next few months - stay tuned. This particular block of Robson St will probably be razed to the ground at some point to make way for a high rise. I normally don't frequent the downtown area but due to some errands, my dad and I found ourselves wandering around for a quick bite. Do not be fooled by the appearance of this small shop, their subs pack a PUNCH and for a great deal as well. I've seen subs go up to as much as almost $14 in some places so when I stepped up and ordered a $7-8 sub it was refreshing to say the least. I had the chance to try the chicken sub and house special sub. Both were good - crunchy baguette, ginormous portions of pickled daikon and carrots (my absolute favourite!!!!) and decent amounts of meat underneath. The house special features a whole selection of meats- I tasted meatball mix, Vietnamese ham and even regular pork pieces as well...They do not miss on packing the subs full! This is definitely not the best sub I've ever had but for what it is and what it costs, I am happy with it for sure. The shop features a few small spots for dine in, but it seems like the grand majority swing by for take out. It also seems like they have a lot of loyal regulars which is amazing to see! During times like these, it's always great to show continued support for small businesses. Although there wasn't much need for service, the man at the counter was really nice and even brought water over to our little table when he served us the food. It's hard to do this because most Vietnamese restaurants make delicious food. This was so-so. It wasn't horrible but for Robson street I expected it to explode with flavour. The daikon and carrot was chopped in large stocks which didn't mesh well with the whole sub. The meat was basic and the mayo slapped on it was messy and the sandwich didn't have enough cilantro. First of all, I rarely ever order takeout or delivery because of the wasteful containers that come with that, so I choose to eat in. I ordered the pho ($10 and super small portion) it comes in a styrofoam bowl, wooden chopsticks and a plastic spoon. Also ordered spring rolls. (The smallest spring rolls I've ever seen, also over fried) they served it on a styrofoam container lid. They cut the lid off the takeout container and used it as a plate!! You know the place is authentic when a) nobody inside speaks proper English, b) the store reeks of fish sauce, and c) the place is diiirty. Haven't seen anything like this in a LONG time. Prices are a bit high, but it IS downtown after all. Sandwiches are some $3.75. The rice dishes are much more reasonable, at around $7. Outside are a couple of plastic tables and chairs. My only complaint is that it's not ghetto enough. In Vietnam, everyone sits in dirty kid-sized chairs, with kid-sized tables. It took away from the experience a bit. The sandwich (banh mi) I had tasted mostly authentic, but was off. Mainly due to the lack of jalepenos, and some local ham instead of the Vietnamese variety. I will definitely be back. read more

My bf had told me about these Banh Mis for awhile and he said they were delicious but boy they exceeded expectations. THIS is where you get a proper French roll! The sandwich tasted much better than the rolls though, since there was alot more veggie variety packed in. The cilantro and carrots were nice, but the pickled radish was my favorite part. The ham inside was also pretty good, and the bun tasted pretty fresh and surprisingly crispy. They brought the food out to me which was a nice service plus, and the restaraunt looked relatively clean up front. The cheap price and filling meal was good, but I did feel a bit sick after eating the meat, so it made me a little weary of how fresh it was.
