The food here is solid - I like the vermicelli dishes, I believe I order #42 which is rice vermicelli noodles with lettuce, soy beans, carrots, cilantro and my personal fav pork (although you can get chx or beef). It has a side bowl of broth that I always add a few extra bits of the rooster hot sauce, and some plum sauce to. Be Aware - this is not a hot soup. I've brought people here and they ordered it and were disappointed because the veggies are all cold. Although my friends who order Pho are always happy. The Vietnamese coffee drinks are great - they will keep you up if you are caffeine sensitive! So why not five stars? Giant portions, an extensive menu and, if you're lucky, a hilariously witty older Viet waiter to top it off! -There are so many choices for pho, bubble tea, vermicelli, rice and more! They even have pictures of the beef cuts so this is the perfect place to introduce Viet food to someone. -The portions are HUGE. As in Man vs. Food huge. And well flavored. And not very expensive. Be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes but it's totally worth the wait. -The pho noodles are very different from the ones I've had previously in the east coast, they are tiny and I recommend a fork if you're not that nimble at chopsticks. -This is a true Asian style restaurant in terms of service. So this place wasn't as bad as I thought being a Chinese AND Vietnamese restaurant (normally when restaurants combine different foods like that I run for the hills!) The pho broth was very flavorful and the produce looked pretty fresh. The wontons we not very good and I only ate one piece of the steak in my soup (seemed a bit low quality) The spring rolls were pretty good also, Ive had better but they did the trick. Spring rolls were crap. They were full of wet iceberg lettuce! WTF? The peanut sauce was watery and thin. The noodles were not cooked enough and tough. The beef broth was bland. When I complained about the spring rolls, they told me I was wrong. I told them that I did not like them and that my opinion is not going to change because they think it's wrong. This was the worst Chinese restaurant we've ever been to. The potstickers had hair in them (they did deduct the cost from our bill). The service was terrible; it took an hour to get our food (even though people who came in after us were finished with their meals before we got served). We've been coming to Pho Bac Noodle Palace in Modesto for the past 18 years, but I will never come here again. My husband ordered Mongolian Beef and the meat was rancid. I went to check out. I told the cashier that I will pay for everything except for the Mongolian Beef. She said that I ordered it, so I have to pay. I said that I wasn't going to pay for bad food. She threatened to call the police. I told her go right ahead. The police came and tried to reason with her. I have never had this kind of treatment before. Been going to this place ever since I knew about it in Modesto. Real good Pho and the Egg Rolls are always nice and crispy and hot so that speaks for its quality. Tried this restaurant for the second time and so pleased both times. The first time we picked up combination fried rice, lemongrass beef and lemongrass chicken over rice (the stir fry side plates). The rice was delicious, very flavorful. The meat dishes were also flavorful and the ingredients were of excellent quality, but for us they were a little onion forward. Tonight we chose spring rolls with shrimp and pork. The spring rolls were very fresh and the peanut sauce was tasty. Again we got the combination fried rice, perfect. The shaking beef was excellent, even the zucchini was crisp (hard to do), we liked the flavors but again a little more onion than we'd like. Perhaps our favorite was the vermicelli with grilled pork. The pork was absolutely delicious, thinly sliced, so flavorful, and when you put it all together--the best. I believe we have found a new go-to in town. read more

We used to come here all the time over the past 10 years and visited recently after moving out of town. I'm not sure if the place changed owners, but the service quality was terrible, and the food smelled and tasted rotten. When we complained to the server, it ended up that we were the problem and they didn't want to hear our concerns about the food. Not sure how the health department does not shut this place down. The gentlemen in the back was constantly wiping his face with his bare hands and then attending directly to the food without gloves. Not to mention, there were carts full of dirty plates in bins parked at the end of the aisle where we were sitting. Very sad and disappointed. We planned to make a stop at Mr. T's donuts and this place as the highlight of our visit to Modesto, but things didn't work out too well. Did I mention that our server had the worst attitude ever? Very disappointed. Especially from a restaurant that I've been too numerous times in the past. I went there last Wednesday 05/15/2019 with 3 of my coworkers. We ordered all PHO bowls. I paid with card. I told the man, we left the tip on the table ($10). The tip was for bringing us the waters when we sat down, and bringing us the bowls. The total was $41 and some change. I made the mistake by not getting a copy, and by not writing anything in the tip line or total line. I just signed in good faith because I told the man the tip was on the table. I trusted this restaurant being that I been here so many times. Sadly, I'll never come here again. They charged me $3 and some change to make it an even $45. It's not worth it for me to call them, but the fact of the matter is, that it is not morally right. Granted it was my mistake for not documenting, nor getting a receipt, but it is what it is. Btw I'm a firm believer in fung shui like this restaurant is, hence all the Chinese New Year decor, but I'm also a firm believer in karma. read more

When I reviewed my credit card transactions a day later, I noticed that the restaurant added an extra $1 to my bill. One dollar is not a big deal for me, but I'm condemning their dishonesty. Bad service, bad food...I took my wife for lunch. I ordered Mongolian Beef. The meat had an acidic taste. We did not eat it. My wife told the cashier about the dish being bad. The cashier asked my wife if she wanted a to go box. My wife said no and that she will pay for everything except for the Mongolian Beef. The cashier threatened to call the police if she didn't pay for everything. My wife told her to go ahead and that she was not going to pay for bad food. I have come hear for 2 years now and as of last Thursday, I'm done with this place. Their a/c is broken and who wants to eat hot soup when its 85 degrees inside there???? I actually complained to 1 of the staff and he informed me the a/c was broken, not that it worked but they were too cheap to use it. **MUST READ** I called and ordered a Seafood Chow Fun. Then hung up and remembered that it might have onions in them. So I called again and told the guy and he assured me he got my order with NO ONIONS. Had my husband go pick it up and told the lady he was here to pick up seafood chow fun with no onions. Lady says ok then takes food and a pair of chop sticks to the back. And brings food back and says "ok no onions". He was like "are you sure there is no onions? The lady went to the back and took off the onions on top. Wow, did she think I would not notice when my face blows up into hives and I'm rolling around on the ground?! I told him that it was bad business what she did and that if I died he would have a major law suit on his hands. This has to be one of the strangest places Ive been for Pho, although Modesto seems to be a haven for strange juxtapositions. Not only can you order from a vast menu of items, but you can also get your car washed at the same time (which I did). As a few others have mentioned, its not the cleanest place, but it has solid food and is worth the trip. Not only that, the portions are good and the Vietnamese coffee will make you grow chest hair (ladies be aware). Ive been here twice so far and have enjoyed it both times. My first experience was in ordering the traditional Pho which was as satisfying as any other Ive had. The second was their fried rice plate which was just as good. Again, a decent place for a wide variety of Vietnamese food and at decent prices. I believe they just remodeled the place. I'm not too excited about the pho here. It always seem like they throw in MSG by the handful. The food is pretty decent.. though it's never consistent. I remember ordering the Lemongrass chicken & rice. What i received tasted like Mongolian chicken.. a sweeter version. We asked if they had a change of ownership. They said they hadn't.. though we found it a bit odd that we didn't recognize ANY of their staff.. including our server. It is a bit pricier than normal Vietnamese restaurants. The egg rolls are good. though it seems as if I'm paying $1 a piece for lumpia.. they are smaller than average. The grilled pork egg rolls, i recommend.
