On my way to East Sooke to goat sit and I decided to treat myself to a sit down lunch instead of a drive through.... Didn't have time to research anything first but it was an overcast sky on Sept 2 and when I saw the sign for Pho Vuong I could see my name on it! It was an extensive menu with some really interesting (meaning enticing) options but I love pho and could t resist ordering the pork belly version because pork belly is one of my favourite food groups! It arrived quickly and was absolutely fresh and delish. The pork belly was SO yummy and after throwing in the peppers and sprouts and basil and lime and a bit of hoisin we were complete. So happy to have stopped here. It's my birthday weekend (or week or even month at my age) so happy to find another way to celebrate! 7/3/17 They have a website printed on the receipt: www.phovuong.ca. I typed that in and got "This page is under development"... I'd put money on it being perpetually so, for perpetuity. Forever stuck in crapness. The place wasn't busy, and they seated our party of 6 quickly, which was great. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before I saw why. For one, there are no Asian servers. Now, I dunno if that is normal in Canada, but here in America I've never ever been to a single Vietnamese place, out of probably hundreds, where the staff was void of ANY Asians (and to think of it, I think we were really the only Asians in the entire restaurant!). But hey, I'm open to new experiences... maybe that doesn't mean anything right?... Anyway, beyond the old dinginess of the place, which would never be a deal killer for me, the real killer was the food... ?. Immediately obvious upon it being placed before me was that they used the WRONG KIND OF RICE. I've gotten Vietnamese rice plates billions of times, and the vast majority use "broken rice" which would be the most authentic. It has a very different texture that goes great with fish sauce. Unfortunately, they used standard white rice, and not only that, they added too much water making it mushy! I HATE badly cooked rice. Like how hard can it be?--you measure the rice and water, turn on the steamer... should be identical every single time. Wtf. Well, the rice was wrong and inedible. The pork chop itself was standard, but I was left hungry cause I couldn't eat the rice and one pork chop ain't gonna do it for me. 2/10 Sorry, this place was one of the worst Vietnamese restaurants I've ever been to in my life. The food was bad, the servers have bad attitude, they took our orders all wrong. There was only 1 table but they still do it so slow.

This place barely has customer coming in and it's the first sign that all their foods not fresh because it's not worth for them to make fresh pots of soup every morning so it's all reused. No fresh ingredients. Trash . I love Vietnamese food and never hated a Vietnamese restaurant but this place completely changed my mind . It sucks so bad , TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE OMG. It was overpriced and each dish we got sucked. Everything was frozen and not fresh. All the soups were watered down and doesn't have any flavor in it what so ever. You would think they can't mess up on rice plate ? Wrong . They give you 5 cups of rice and a lot cheap old veg with a small, thin child size pork chop as a portion. And how can a viet restaurant mess up on fish sauce ?! I'm so mad that we actually had to pay full price for all the sh*tty food . Told the owner/manager lady that her food all were really bad and we knew that the food she made us were all frozen and she just stared at us with no apology or denied any statements we made or explanation . I travel all over Canada and the USA for business. I was on the look out for a sushi place but the pricing and value here in Duncan was way out. So I decided Pho. First of all it wasn't that busy. I don't understand why. The servers were polite and friendly. The portions were huge and was brought to the table really quick and an appie and dinner was $25.00 with tip. The spring rolls were crisp hot and not oily. The fish sauce with carrots was just the right amount of sweet and sour. My entire was huge the veggies were fresh and crisp. 05/30/2019 I'm reading through the reviews and I have to disagree with some points (as always, to each their own): 1) Simply having "Vietnamese" waiters does not make any Pho or Vietnamese restaurant good. Trust me, I'm from California as well visiting the area and there are good honest people here in this city that put in good honest work. The status of how my food taste is not dependent on who is serving me. I would rather measure a restaurant based on their taste and service, not on their race. And I have to say, both were on point. Oh, and to refuted towards those who are still concerned that there are no Asians in an Asian restaurant...I saw the owner and the sweet lady who cooked our dishes: they were both Asian. 2) The hospitality is amazing. In my experience, back in California, you have waiters in Vietnamese restaurants giving you mere minute or two to make your order. They are just that busy and don't have the time to talk about the menu and which dishes they recommend. This place was the total opposite. We were greeted and seated in a timely manner. The hospitality from the lady who served us was great. I asked for her recommendations and she gave me her personal choices. My family went forward with 3 bowls of their pho, another dish called "Bun Bo Hue" and a rice/chicken dish. She gave us waters and placed our orders in right away. 3) After being in Canada for 5 days and noticing how the pricing works around here, averagely I would say a meal in BC is $15 (CAD). With that knowledge coming in, everything on the menu was priced fair. The dishes all averaged around $12-15 in price (excluding tip). And here's where I was pleasantly surprised: the portions were HUGE. Bowls were large size, veggie sides were a good amount, and spices were readily plentiful. Dishes were all solid and great! Staff came and checked on us making sure we were good. 4) I personally love the taste of fish sauce and I'm sure we can all agree that Viet food has intense flavors. I talked to the staff and there are some customers who cannot stand some of these strong flavors. However if you ask for them to amp up the intensity (spice/etc) whatever it may be, they're willing to tweak your order and accommodate. We came in a tour group (SuperVacation) and realized our menu is different from other customers. We were charged $15 for something costing $12.95. We were told that the $15 includes tax and 15% tips which seemed fine to us...But when we got the bill, owner charged us $15 PLUS tax and PLUS 15% tips again!!! When confronted, the owner argued and finally gave us the money that they double charged us back! These people should be reported to the IRS for tax fraud! They serve tourists all the time and I am sure this is NOT the first time they do this. And the food sucks as well...The meat in the pho was hard...The bowl was big but not the portion. Please do not tell us you need to hire more people to serve us tourists and that's why we have a higher priced menu. The fact is if you can't handle tourists, other restaurants would be more than happy to take over! And with much lesser prices as well! Also, there's only ONE restroom for the whole restaurant. And you have to get the restroom key from the server. Restrooms have names on them...You can only use Pho Vuongs restroom... Definitely not a place for tourists! I don't know why we were forced to pay a 15% tip considered the poor service we got and the yucky food. Geez...What a waste of time and money and my stomach! read more

We went to this restaurant for dinner on Apr 14. There were 4 tables occupied. We were seated and given our menus and asked what we would like to drink. My friend ordered Green tea pot and I asked for some water. I was down with a gout attack and was advised to eat vegetarian. So I asked the waitress if the chef can rig up some egg fried rice, which is not on the menu. She went and asked the chef and came back and said cannot do. So I asked her can you do an egg scramble, boiled vegetables and rice. She immediately calculated that and told me that would cost me $10. I said OK. She brought me a cup of white rice and a cup of boiled vegetables. So I asked her you forgot my eggs. She went inside came back after 10 minutes and told me they don't have eggs anymore. I said I cannot eat just boiled vegetables and rice and hence returned it.. By the time we are done and asked our bill, she actually charged us for the returned food which was an incomplete order. UNBELIEVABLE. WHEN WE CONFRONTED THE WAITRESS SHE SAID SHE IS SORRY BUT WE HAVE TO PAY FOR THE INCOMPLETE ORDER WHICH WE RETURNED. DISGUSTING. read more

Came here with a friend who has eaten here many times before. Got the chefs special "beef stew pho" or "brisket stew pho" and it was amazing. I don't know why this place doesn't have higher ratings. On top of that, the waiter we had was excellent, and it didn't take long to get our food. The tea was great too. Wish I lived closer because I would go back tomorrow!!!! read more

The only reason why I am giving this place 1 star is because 0 isn't an option... I would recommend this place to someone I hate. The bad experience started right at the door, she asked very rudely for all of our vaccine passports and as we sat down to the table no water was given and she didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink at all, She leaned on our table as she took our order in our personal space. She acted like she didn't want to be there at all and as soon as the first person at my table was done their food she bright out all of our bills in the middle of our dinner without even asking if we'd like dessert. The only music was a continuous ringing but it was still too quiet to be able to have a comfortable conversation. She forgot to give us spoons with our PHO and when she brought it over she stuck it straight in our soup as well as when she finally remembered our water she slammed it on the table. She rushed us paying our bills, I didn't want to to tip but I did anyways because I am a tipper. Had takeout today, and returned to restaurant to express my displeasure of the quality of meat in my meal. I was told that is how he meat is prepared, and let vowing to not set foot in there again. I wish I took a picture, the meat was 60% fat, which I do not eat. Imagine thick fatty bacon grossly under-cooked. I have had eaten Vietnamese food in Toronto, and Vancouver, and this food was disgusting. read more
