Today we waited over and hour and a half for our take out order. When it was finally ready the tempura was undercooked and oily, the edamame was cold, the miso was lukewarm, and the meal was generally underwhelming. (I couldn't finish it due to the greasiness so I had a banana for dinner.) When picking up the order we noticed a general chaos and lack of service from the staff. Several people with reservations arrived and were turned away. The restaurant felt very poorly managed. Not a good experience. We won't be back. read more

We went there on a Tuesday evening to get some real Japanese sushi. There are many positive reviews for this place but this not one of those. The first red light was the help wanted sign on the front door and the reduced hours notice. They should have also posted that they were short of fresh fish to make sushi. Our party ordered several different types of sushi and all hardly included any fish. Now we have had sushi in Japan and many locations in Southern California and they all included fish. Maybe it's more of a BC style to just shave a small thin spect of fish with razor blade and roll it into a white rice roll. Regardless it lacked in quality and flavor. Now I don't expect this unfavorable review to sway anybody's thoughts about frequenting this establishment but I suggest you call to confirm that they have visited a fish market lately. FYI, the miso soup was very marginal as well. Hopefully you luck will be better than ours. read more

After Shima closed down, my friends and I had to find a new Japanese AYCE to frequent. We stumbled upon Taste of Tokyo (TOT), which offers a fairly decent range of hot and cold food for $26.99. Starting off with the hot food, the pièce de résistance is definitely the crab legs. The meat is quite succulent, but you do have to work your way to it as the crab legs aren't pre-cracked. Also, they aren't replenished as often as you might like, so definitely get your fair share in the beginning or endure the wait. Another star dish is the oyster motoyaki, which is much preferred over the seafood one (bits of fish w/ lots of veggies). There is also yakitori, tempura (prawn and assorted veggies), miso soup (ingredients are self-serve), yakisoba, etc. Next up, the cold food! Of course, we must talk rolls. Frankly speaking, I think TOT's rolls are only okay. They might be a lot better a la carte, but at least for AYCE, the rice ratio is a bit off and the rolls tend to be on the smaller side. There are no cones served here either! For nigiri, you will likely have to specially request it, though it is included in AYCE. Some other cold food items include seaweed salad, sunomono, coffee jello, and fruits. Unlike most Japanese AYCEs where you complete an order form, TOT offers their buffet selection as a self-serve (similar to western-style buffets). In other words, you do have to get in your cardio and the food isn't always freshly made. For sushi, in particular, the latter isn't ideal. With that said, I do think the quality of TOT is still acceptable for ACYE standards; moreover, for the price it's at and the variety you're getting, it's not that bad of a deal. read more

Hit this place up for sushi AYCE while we were in Victoria. This was an interesting place since unlike most AYCE, they have the sushi out on platters like regular buffet. We went a bit late and they were already out of a few items. Overall it was good food. a good place to go if you want to try different rolls since they have lots out, as well as some other miscellaneous food items. The key is to keep an eye on what just came out since some of the stuff that isn't as fresh doesn't taste good at all. Therefore if you can get a table that is in eye's view of the serving area that would be best. Once I started getting the fresh stuff only, the food quality was much better. The service wasn't good at all, we were left alone most of the time and didn't get our drinks or our Nigiri for a long time. From what I remember....Hot stations to the side were generally good, the gyoza was not crispy at all which sucked. I would skip the croquette unless you are splitting it with somebody. The teriyaki beef was good when it is fresh. Fried chicken was great, especially when fresh. Same with the Tempura. Pro-tip, you are also able to order Nigiri as part of AYCE. A very good place to eat if you are actually familiar with actual authentic and real sushi and do not live in Vancouver. I tried their hotate, toro, and sake nigiri. As someone who tries many different sushi places in smaller towns and cities, I am usually disappointed by the toro (which is usually just tuna not toro) and the lack hotate and uni on the menu. Here, the sushi was delicious enough that it pulled me in for another plate of toro sashimi. Service was really great too. I inquired about a dish after it was served and the waiter noticed the issue and did not hesitate to go beyond my expectations to make up for the error. A lot of negative reviews mentioning the AYCE. My suggestion is to not eat "all you can eat" for Japanese food. read more

My go to place whenever I visit the island. I will admit that I do avoid the buffet, but not because of Taste of Tokyo, it is just my thoughts that sushi should be made to order and I also hate the thought of other people touching my food before I eat it, as in the other diners picking it up. Even though i can't write about the buffet , I can comment on their sushi. The rolls are great and they have enough that you can get some traditional sashimi for people that just like raw fish, as well as some great variations of california rolls for those who like western sushi plates. Coming from a place with great Japanese food, I have to say I'm impressed by this restaurant in a small town like Sidney. The food is very good. We ordered udon noodle soup, sockeye salmon sashimi, unagi don, dinner bento (with California roll, tempuras, fruits, and salad), agedashi tofu, and mango ice cream. Salad and agedashi tofu is so so, but everything else, seriously, is simply hands down impressive. The service is also very decent. We went with two kids, and the waiter was very nice to us. I think the price is also good. Overlook that Taste of Tokyo is tucked inside a bland multi-use building off the main drag with an unwelcoming entrance and drab interior. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. I enjoyed a nicely balanced flavour, refreshing ebi sunomono salad and the prawn and vegetable tempura, a good portion and perfectly light and crisp battered. My partner was pleased with the chicken teriyaki bowl, and the portions and freshness of the assorted sashimi, except the herring (it was pickled). Cutting and plating was attentive. We are local so a little biased but we love this place for AYCE Saturday's. We go often with large groups after hiking or sailing and sometimes you need to wait a bit but the staff are almost all long term and really friendly. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Decor is wonderful and authentic. Feels like you are transported to Osaka. You think you've found a good spot but read on. I had ordered ahead because I was on a tight schedule and when I got there I was asked to wait 10 minutes, forgotten about, rediscovered, re-introduced myself, found out someone had totally forgotten to let the kitchen know I had called 20 minutes ago with an order, re-ordered, made to wait all over again and to top it off, no one bothered to offer so much as a '...sorry we made you wait' as they took my money and shuffled me out the door. FOOD: I've eaten a lot of Japanese food and this wasn't even close to what I've come to expect even from North American Japanese styled fare. Teriyaki was off and chicken was dust dry. Rice wasn't cooked properly and... well... I think you get the drift. PRICES: Not worth paying money for this low-quality food & service. However the quality of the fish was very poor the salmon was almost orange ( farmed) and the tuna tasted like chlorine waste of $50.00 just thought I would give it a shot and save my self the drive and hopefully have a new sushi spot ... This place sucks. Their water tasted like it was used for tea that didn't get washed. I went there with my bf and his family. Our food took too long! I ordered the Tempura dish for $17, all it came with were miso soup which by the way very salty, 1/4 cup of rice, 2 pieces of 'prawns', 2 pieces of squid, 4 veggies. I should've just ordered the Tempura a la carte which I know would be less of everything. They overcharged us for US dollars twice on top of exchange rate. We were going to pay in USD cash, but their rate would be less cause they would have to go to the 'bank'. We weren't expecting that those supposedly welcoming waitresses would do that. Was excited to discover a sushi place in town and went in to give it a try. As a Vancouverite who recently moved to the area understood that sushi will always just be a bit below par from what I can get on the mainland so i have considered this element in this review. I ordered two sushi rolls and the rice of both of these rolls were rubbery. yes, i said it. RUBBERY. I don't know if its just that batch of rice or that its their interpretation of sushi but it was enough for me to decide that this is not the place for me. Very nice waitress, passable maki sushi but BYOW: bring your own wasabi. I don't know what they cut their wasabi with but it was dark green, clay-like, devoid of wasabi taste, and left a pasty residue in the mouth. Not just a condiment, wasabi is anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic - kind of important when eating raw fish. If you're going to hold yourself out as a Japanese restaurant you can't fake something as basic to the cuisine as wasabi. Made for the least satisfying sushi I have ever eaten. read more

I would highly recommend AGAINST this sushi restaurant. I spent $100 on take out dinner for 3 people. The tuna sashimi was bland and tasted frozen..and owner confirmed it was frozen, defrosted that day. The unagi and scallop nigiri portion was so tiny and bland. The hatachi sashimi was just ok. The sunomuno was also below standards. The best items were the seaweed salad and free ca roll. I went back and spoke to the owner the next day, reviewing each item and how disappointed we were in the meal. We had eaten in the restaurant once before and enjoyed our meal. He said the only thing he can do is offer a free appetizer next time I come in. There will NOT be a next time. read more
