I have done business with Phoenix Art Restoration in Issaquah for many years and had been pleased with their work. On 1-31-2023 I brought in 3 silk screens and 2 paintings to be deordorized and appraised which I had acquired It was from a smoker and the art work needed to have the tobacco smell mitigated. They had done this in the past for a silk screen with the same issues. It was done in a matter of weeks and at a reasonable price. Not so with this lot. After not hearing from Phoenix for several weeks I called and was told "someone would let me know" when they would complete the process. I was asked to pay $200 which was not an issue. I called every month and was told it takes a long time to get smoke out of silk. During the summer I called and was told again that my art work was not done. This is 6+ months and "still not done". I wanted my property back- no one knew exactly where it was but would look for it. By this point I felt that my art was being held hostage. They "found" it and set it back to Issaquah on August 5, 2023. I was told I had a balance of $460. Phoenix said that the work was not done because I requested items before deodorizing was complete. During this period of time (June 25) I brought in a Purple Heart awarded to a close relative severely wounded in combat. I wanted it to be placed in a shadow box. Last week (September 29) I walked by Phoenix while shopping at Gilman Village. Imagine my surprise when I saw a sign on the store window that Phoenix Art and Restoration was closed! Luckily someone was inside and gave me back my Purple Heart- It had not even been started on! What a disappointment and a scam. I would have liked to give negative stars to this dipicable business, but apparently that isn't an option. Do not trust any of your valuables to this business. read more

TLDR: The work done was acceptable, but only because I picked my pieces up in person and refused to leave until all errors had been corrected. They overcharged me. They did not apologize for the errors or the overcharge of these things. ---------------------------------- The whole thing: On September 10, 2022, I brought two pieces to Phoenix for restoration. The two pieces were a framed photograph from the early 1900s and a framed oil painting from the 1970s. I was quoted reasonable prices and put down an initial deposit. I was told the painting would be done in three months and the photograph in six. On September 17, I paid an additional $112 deposit. In December, I called to check on progress and was told neither piece was done but would be soon. In January, I called again and was told that because there was no deposit on the photograph, it wasn't even in the work queue. I don't know why this wasn't mentioned in December. I paid a third deposit that day. In February, I received a call that my pieces were ready to be picked up. When I arrived, the painting was returned to me without the frame. I told the staff that I would wait while it was fixed. After some searching, the frame was found (unlabeled) along with the piece of thin foam-board that had been used years earlier to create a "view port" to avoid covering writing on the back of the canvas. The painting was put into the frame by another staff member and brought back...without the foam board, the writing covered by backing paper, and without a hanging wire. So, I sent it back again. The third time, it came back almost entirely right. Close enough that I decided it would do. The photograph and frame were nicely restored, but the photo wasn't centered in the frame. I pointed that out to the staff, and they fixed that, as well. Nearly two hours after I arrived, both items were finally correctly done and I was presented with the final bill, which I paid but thought seemed high. When I got home, I reviewed the invoices from Phoenix and charges to my credit card and realized I'd been overcharged $112 (they failed to record the September deposit). I contacted Phoenix by email and told them about my experience the day I picked up the two items and the overcharge and got back "I am sorry to hear about this experience" and my message was forwarded to the owner. I received a refund check for the $112, but no apology. read more

I highly recommend Phoenix for framing and art restoration services. I have been taking artwork to Ray at the Issaquah location for over three years. He is professional, highly experienced, and returns quality work. He has been framing for decades so has a breadth of knowledge about techniques and is an artist himself so has a fantastic eye for material selection. I have brought him unframed pieces to frame from scratch, poor framing jobs from elsewhere to redo, and old framing work to touch up. All of his work from jobs from scratch to repairing and refurbishing old frames had been top notch. He can frame elegantly in a manner that enhances the art and takes care to do so in a way that will best preserve the work as well. I have also brought pieces to him for transfer to their Shoreline location for restoration. The restoration team takes great care in first explaining what they can and can't do to restore or clean a piece and the reasons why. They are always very honest about what is involved and helpful in making cost/benefit decisions. I brought in my great grandmother's 100 year old frame that was missing a corner from the molding. They made a mold from an intact corner and recreated the missing corner. Once repaired, you can not tell which was the damaged corner. Amazing! I have found the restoration work can sometimes take a couple months to complete, but I am happy to wait for their high quality work on my heirloom pieces. I wouldn't take my art elsewhere. The Phoenix team are experts, know their artwork, are helpful, flexible and budget conscious. I have had nothing but great experiences with this team. What a gem! read more

Phoenix Art Restoration did amazing work to restore 8 paintings of different mediums (oil, charcoal, acrylic, high quality limited edition prints) after being in a winter water flood, where the art was sitting in 4 inches of cold dirty water in a storage unit with a sprinker malfunction. Some of the pieces I thought would not be able to be repaired. The piece with the worst damage (an acrylic painting on art paper painted in the 1940s) was stained and warped in waves about 1/3 inch away from the frame. You can't even tell it was damaged! We are so very happy to have our family treasures so well restored and cared for. Thank you! read more

A friend recommended Phoenix when my favorite coffee mug was broken. The repairs they made on her fine porcelain cup were not visible so I expected similar results for my oversized, chunky, ceramic mug. Unfortunately, Phoenix left me feeling like a sucker. I dropped off my mug with a $100 down payment with the expectation set that the repairs could take up to six months. Exactly six months later, I was shown a mug with epoxy drips inside, an unpatched hole, a white patch on the reassembled handle and seams and cracks showcasing all the repairs. I left the mug, telling them I expected more. I returned home and wrote an email to their main office, explaining my disappointment. Two months later, Phoenix called to discuss the epoxy drip, the hole, and the repair lines. She assured me it could be fixed. More months passed with no update despite my multiple inquiries asking for status. Eight months after my conversation with the repairer, I get a call out of the blue that the mug is ready. Reluctantly but with hope that I might be pleasantly surprised, I head back to Phoenix. I inspect the mug. The epoxy drip was gone and I could no longer see daylight through the mug, pretty low standards for a $200 repair. However, the seams, the white patch on the handle, and the crevasses from the cracks were all still there. I didn't receive an apology for the nearly 1.5 years of frustration. They clearly didn't care and I was tired. A sticky note on my receipt said "DONE!! Please call client to pick up and let her know we can't do any more work to it and keep it food safe." I paid my remaining balance and took my mug. read more

I've only used them for custom framing, but if I ever needed restoration I would absolutely use them. Everyone we've worked with has an artists eye to help selecting a frame, but really takes our tastes and ideas into account. I took my parent in to get one of their pieces framed, but was 10 minutes late to arrive. In that time the staff had understood their vision, recommended the frame and they were finalizing measurements. I've never been that lucky, but they've helped bring clarity where I needed it. read more

Don't waste your time & money at this place. Took 7 months instead of quoted 3 months. Four times over the last 4 months they said it would only be 2 more weeks. Excuses included a sick employee twice and a family emergency. Framing was ok, touch up work was poor quality. They did nothing to meet any dissatisfaction with their work or customer service. I have had three different canvas paintings framed at the Redmond Store. In two cases, I provided the frame, and in one, I purchased the frame from Phoenix. My experience has been awesome. 1. The selection of frames at the store is impressive. There are few places that I have seen with such a broad selection. We are pretty traditional in our style preferences, and Phoenix didn't disappoint in terms of having something that matched our style preferences. 2. The quality of the work is spot on. The canvases we were having stretched and framed were all new paintings. They were perfectly stretched with the right amount of tension and similarly expert framed. This included having to work with one of my older frames that needed a bit of tweaking to get the canvas frame in it evenly. 3. The service was excellent. The gentleman that helped us with all three paintings was super friendly, personable and knowledgeable. He remembered our names from visit to visit and called us with updates on the progress of the work, and even called to coordinate when to pick up the work to make sure he was available. 4. Love the location. It is great to see this type of business in downtown Redmond. Redmond needs more of this type of business to build upon a full downtown experience. And it is easy to get to and has plenty of parking. While one can find other framing locations in and around Redmond, and I have used at least two others, they don't compare to Phoenix. Ray is a wonderful listener and has learned my style so that he knows exactly what mats and frames to suggest to result in a framed piece that beautifully highlights my original fine art piece. I had a house fire july 9th 2014 they picked up my antiques that have been in my family for over 125 years promised to have them taken care of and returned by Christmas to this date they have done no work to them and I've asked to have the items returned so I could have another company complete the work they have set up four different dates to do so to never show up. Just picked up two pieces I had framed. One original and one print, both with sentimental as well as artistic value. The attention to detail and high levels of customer service they provided are rare to find these days. When selecting the frames and matts, I had a very hard time deciding. They were patient and made suggestions I never would have though about. BEAUTIFUL! They even made suggestions as to how to hang a rather large piece and sent me home with special glass cleaner and cleaning instructions. What a very disapointing experience... I took my painting in many Months ago for a cleaning and to have the frame restored... Provided very specific instructions. The painting was not cleaned, there is very visible dirt in the oil painting... I also stressed multiple times to not use the liquid gold and to use real gold leaf on the corners of the period 20s frame - they shook their head in agreement but ignored my request and did the spread on gold anyways... It now looks terrible and I have to take it to another conservator to have the whole thing re-done.. Also when I asked for updates on the paintings progress I was given updates that it was almost ready to go, was cleaned, frame is done and just needed to be put back together (all weeks after the deadline)... After not hearing back I finally went in there only to find out they had not even started.. I was already frustrated and told them well since they had not started lets get this right and review how the frame needs to be done... even sent examples... they still messed it up... I can't stress enough how disappointed I am with them in every single aspect of this attempted restoration.. read more

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Phoenix Art Restoration - both from the experience I received as a customer, to the quality of the finished product. I purchased an antique wooden frame during my travels in East Africa, and wanted to turn it into a mirror. This frame was in a fragile state, and several places i took it to wouldn't even handle it. Our experience with the staff was beyond considerate. They spent a lot of time looking into the right kind of mirror, and the right kind of support/backing that would be needed - and explained the entire process to me and my brother along the way. In the end, we expected to walk away with a hefty bill, and were pleasantly surprised to find the cost of this comparable to any other Michael's or framing shop in the area. We were so touched by how much they cared for this piece, and they've made a life-time customer out of us. No reason to go anywhere else, particularly if you have a delicate or special item to frame. I would give them more stars if possible. I have an old oil painting (150+ yo) which was damaged. Phoenix fixed the damage and touched up the area so it can not be discerned from the rest of the painting. They then cleaned the painting. I doubt it has looked this good since it left the artist's easel. I can not give them a good enough review. read more

Phoenix Restoration did a fabulous job framing a needlework piece that I did for a good friend. As it was not possible for me to get to the store in person, I mailed the artwork to them and we did everything over e-mail with photos. Arcana gave me several framing options from which to choose and everything turned out beautifully. This company brings harm to the whole reputation of artists of all kinds. In October 2012 I shipped them a fine antique clock clock with a value of about $15,000. It had a cracked face on it which they contracted to repair with delivery to me by mid-February. It is now nearly one year later and I don't have my clock and they have miserably failed to make ALL the repairs they were contracted to make. The owner made false testimony in the suit I brought against him, a suit that is still in underway. Though I had no work done at the shop, I did inquire about whether or not they could do a repair to a bronze piece. It took 3 emails and 5 phone calls over the space of two weeks to get a response from their conservator, which was especially irksome in light of the fact that she finally replied that they could not do the work (despite the fact that during one of my calls, an employee assured me that this was just the kind of work that they handled). Their failure to follow up would seem to send a pretty clear message that they don't place a lot of stock in good customer service. read more

After seeing the pictures on their website of their ability to restore porcelain seamlessly, I brought a sentimental piece I had recently broken. I opted for their most expensive restoration and glazing. First, they said it would take three months. It took six. They did not reply to my emails when I asked on the status of things. And finally, when I did get it back, the restoration was HORRIBLE. The pictures on their website are a total lie. I think they may have just taken a whole object and broken it, and then reversed the shots to pretend they had fixed it. There is no way that people able to do that sort of repair work did what they did to my object. They just glued the pieces together. They didn't even fill in a piece that had been missing. The cracks are huge and visible. It just breaks my heart! If I had known it was going to be this bad, I would have opted for Kintsugi to have repaired it with gold as opposed to this shoddy, awful looking mess. I cried all the way home. Just. I used to work at Phoenix Art Restoration, and I can tell you for fact, they clean items with a fine tooth comb, or perhaps something a little gentler depending on the piece. There was rarely a rush to get the work done, it just had to be done right. There were a number of times I thought I had spruced up an item as nicely as possible only to have a more seasoned employee show me how it could be even better. On 10/2/15, I took a painting into this store to inquire about replacing a small piece of the frame. The woman who helped me was arrogant and rude. The repair was more than I was expecting and I was uncertain about whether I should pay $75-$125 to repair a 2.5 inch section. While thinking about what to do I said, "It's a pretty frame, isn't it?" looking for a little support that I should repair it. She said to me, "I've seen prettier." I couldn't believe my ears! I then said, "Well, I guess that is only half an insult," to which she said, "Well, you asked my opinion." Yes, that's true, but I am the customer and I would think that she would not have insulted me, especially in a sarcastic fashion. I told her that I had not picked out the original frame, but that I really liked it and she said, "Well, someone sometime thought it was pretty." Honestly, when someone brings a piece of art into your shop, DO NOT INSULT IT. I have never written a Yelp review before AND I made sure that I waited a few days to write this to be certain that I was not over-reacting. I was not. This gal was a horrible representative of this business. I took my painting with me, now knowing approximately how much it will cost to repair the frame. This is a big metro area -- I am sure that I can find somewhere else to take it, where I am not insulted. This woman is the EXACT reason that this business lost my business. (Management: her first name started with a V. and she was working around 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015.) read more

First time I have ever written a review on the web but finally thought I should let all know about my experience. Ok, it's been a couple weeks since I picked up my print. I was pleased with the work and do believe the print is better for it, however, my issue was the charge - a lot more than I was expecting. To be fair I had had a rough two weeks before so this was just the tipping point, that the charge was way more than I thought it would be. They had done work for me before and was ok. When I left [my antique/favorite] print I did so because of going over options to fix and that the one I chose would work and was fine for my budget. But when I picked it up the charge was $150 more than expected. They did call me back but work was already done, paid, and picked up so what could/would be done? I did tell them later that the [pink] work copy given to a customer was usually hard to read and maybe should be readable - clarify all work done by all departments and the charges from each...because it adds up - sometimes about $150 more than expected. read more
