Fast forward to today. I had taken a few years off from shooting. But I got the itch again and shook off the dust at another range. Recently decided to start shopping for another firearm. I stopped by Maxon's as they had the 3 handguns in stock that I've been considering. While I did not purchase anything, Luis was extremely helpful, and knew his stuff. He was super friendly and patient with me as well. I really appreciated his relaxed, friendly attitude. Something you don't find too often in this scene. Their prices are a little high, but I think the employees make it worth it. I'll be back to use their range, and post an update if there are any issues. Minus 1 star for the price of their CC qualification target. $3. Ouch. The other range I go to in East Dundee sells them for ¢75.

I've been going to this range since the month they opened their doors, and I happily keep going back! This is the epitome of what a "clean range" should be. It has the best HEPA filters in the ranges and it never smells of powder. The employees are all so very nice and helpful, usually with a does of comedic relief. Shooting there is like going to a friend's home to shoot. They make all their customers feel welcomed, rather than some ranges (on Rt 30?) where everyone seems to have an attitude of being better than you and that you're inconveniencing them at their place of work. NOT HERE - YOU ARE ALWAYS MADE TO FEEL WELCOMED AND APPRECIATED AS A CUSTOMER! ALWAYS! While I've been shooting for over 50 years, I recently took a private lesson from Mark Longo to break a bad habit of (like many!) anticipating the shot and shooting low-left. WHAT AN AMAZING INSTRUCTOR! Mark was able to zero in on several bad habits I had developed over the years, and taught me how to correct them as well as practicing drills to continue to fix and internalize them at home. I was always a "decent" shot, but in only one lesson I absolutely improved. I will be joining their club as Mark Longo got me excited to shoot again, because of the progress I immediately noticed. I just want to continue to get better, and I've found no other range that comes close to helping me achieve this. This range rocks! "Uncle Steve" Bloome

From start to finish, the experience was professional, welcoming, and genuinely customer-focused. I came in very excited to purchase a SIG Sauer P226 X-Carry Legion, and the experience absolutely lived up to that excitement. I also had a lot of questions--not only about the P226 X-Carry Legion itself, which I'm in love with, but also about several other firearms I was considering. Kris and Chris were both incredibly knowledgeable and patient, taking the time to walk through differences, answer questions in detail, and provide honest, thoughtful insight. What really stood out was how attentive and unrushed the entire experience felt. I never felt pressured or pushed toward a decision. Instead, I felt comfortable, well informed, and confident throughout the process, which made the purchase even more enjoyable. This wasn't my first experience with GAT Guns either. I've purchased items from them in the past unrelated to firearms, and those experiences were just as positive. In addition, several of my family members purchased gifts for me from GAT Guns for Christmas 2025, and they all had great experiences as well, which says a lot about the consistency of the team and the way they treat customers. GAT Guns is clearly a well-run, professional operation with a knowledgeable staff that takes pride in doing things the right way. Between my own experiences and those of my family, they've earned my trust and my repeat business. I highly recommend GAT Guns to anyone looking for a top-tier buying experience.

Had to call the guys at the desk to sweep up the brass. One of the cheaper ranges for a reason. But I want to discuss their sales. As we know, IL has a 15rd magazine limit for pistols. In spite of this, and regardless of your feelings, they completely ignore it and have a ton of handguns with 18+ magazines for sale. Now we all know all the cops that frequent this place off-duty, and GAT feels like they can just skirt the rules. The problem is, if you're caught, they won't be held responsible at all. I pitty the poor new owner that is unaware of this restriction and suffers consequences. Used firearms appraisals? Forget it. Their offers are straight up insulting. Even Cabela's does better. They offered me 2x what GAT did without hesitation. Their ammo shelves are pretty bare too.

The place has a lot going on in there, including classes. There are a lot of things on site at that facility beyond just the ranges themselves. The owner and the people at the cash register were very nice. It really is a good place. The only downside I guess I would say is the rangemaster is just a little flaky. I'm a highly trained military shooter with over 50 years of experience. The rangemaster did enforce safety but he does have some quirks so just put up with it. The main entry area oriented around retail and check-in is well managed and they have some pretty nice music playing the background, old school. The rangemaster has his own taste in music blasting in the range. In fact, that music is louder than the bullets in some cases. His taste in music doesn't suit mine but beyond that I just don't think it's appropriate for the range because of its super heavy bass blast and continually, overshadowing the sound of the rounds. This shouldn't be the place where you're thinking about your "dance moves" and your clubbing/dating strategies! It's about shooting. Sure, play some music but the music shouldn't be competing with the reason we are showing up in the first place. Keep the "disco" at the disco! If You can clean that up, this would arguably be one of the best ranges around.

Part of that is because it can be a bit intimidating entering this kind of environment while you're still building up your confidence. Until I found Shore Galleries! I've been to ranges where asking questions is treated as ignorance rather than a desire to learn. I had the opposite experience here. Upon passing off my FOID card and while filling out my waiver, the gentleman behind the counter managed to strike up a conversation and had us chatting like old buddies in just a few minutes long interaction. I immediately felt welcome and at ease. My friend and I came in on a Sunday afternoon and after browsing the downstairs shop for a few minutes, we were given a stall in the upstairs range. The range is smaller than some others I've been to, and plenty of other patrons wandered in and out while we were there, but it wasn't overly crowded and we didn't have to wait. A full hour in the range and 6 targets purchased ran us a very reasonable $50 for the two of us to share a lane. They have a solid variety available for rent, though we brought our own equipment so I can't speak to pricing on rentals or ammo. There are no ranges in Chicago proper, but from Lakeview to Lincoln Wood the trek felt very reasonable and well worth the short drive! I will definitely be returning here, and am so excited that I found a place I can comfortably learn, practice, and grow.
