I took the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course and the concealed carry course. This experience really is better than you could hope for. This is better because the instructor is patient with the student while imparting concepts and objectives, such as handgun safety and maintenance. The instructor is knowledgeable as he answered all questions (some were in unrelated topics, like personal defense against knife attack), and, shared some stories and personal experiences to highlight a lesson. In addition, he made me aware of some relatively cheaper shopping venues for many cleaning supplies, holsters, and ammunition. The decor is old and that makes for a counter-intuitive experience - you are getting a high knowledge base, but should disregard the setting, and focus on the teacher-student relationship. read more

As a novice I was looking to take a basic one-day course for pistols, and the offering by the NRA looked ideal. I did extensive research online for what was available in the Chicago area, and FSTA stood out for having the most flexibility with regard to scheduling and location, and making it very clear exactly what was covered and what equipment I needed (or could rent) to participate. The subject matter was taught very well, I thought. The instructor used to be a high school teacher and it showed - the various aspects of gun safety and pistol shooting were delivered in a comprehensive and understandable way. I found it enjoyable throughout, especially the range time when I got to shoot a variety of pistols and calibers, and practice my marksmanship. I thought it was very reasonably priced as well, and the tips on the smart ways to buy a firearm with a discount made it even better value. Best of all, the one-day NRA course and range practice will allow me to complete the requirements for a concealed carry license with only a few more hours of classroom instruction, so this is really a no-brainer of a choice if you are serious about owning a pistol and want to set off on the right footing. read more

Before taking the NRA Basic Pistol as well as the IL and FL conceal carry classes with Andrew, I was a novice and didn't know anything about weapons or the laws pertaining to them. By the end of the course, I was confident in my abilities to handle a weapon and thoroughly understood the laws. Additionally, I found the two-day course to be engaging as it included hands-on demonstrations, incorporation of technology, real-world scenarios/examples, question and answer sessions, and analogies that enhanced understanding. Also, Andrew provided the class with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the application process and resources such as handouts and a binder that contained information that was covered during the course that can be reviewed at any time. Andrew is a very knowledgeable, thorough, concise, and patient instructor that caters/addresses the varying needs of his students. Andrew gives incredible instruction. It was truly fantastic! My kids still can't believe they were with you in class from 8-3, they thought it went by really fast. That's a sign of complete engagement. They not only learned a lot, but they walked away with a healthy respect for firearm safety. They look forward to their next class with you. Your instruction was extremely clear and deep with knowledge. My kids are 12 and 13 and had no problem with the material that Andrew went over. He is very thorough! If you haven't taken the NRA Basic Pistol course you need to. I've always been afraid of guns, never wanted to be around them, let alone hold one or learn to shoot one. At the insistence of my family I took a two day class NRA Basics Pistol and conceal and carry course. The instructor Andrew was absolutely amazing. He was very thorough with his instructions and clarified any misunderstandings I had. Andrew's patience during the hands on instruction gave me a sense of comfort when learning how to properly handle guns for my safety and that of others. During the class I also learned about gun laws in Illinois and other states which are helpful when becoming a gun owner. The class overall was fun, engaging, and educational. I have learned so much during the two day class, but more importantly becoming more knowledgeable about gun safety has diminished my fear of guns. read more
