When we stopped in this afternoon, the owners were telling my friends and I about their mix-tape swap. Burn a mix CD, bring it in, and get a mix CD that another customer brought in. What I love most about this record store is that it's a small location with a bunch of stuff. They only carry high quality stuff so I don't have to sort through 30 Barbara Striesand albums to get to some good stuff. They have a really well designed store too. It's like a record boutique. I went in just to look for some new vinyl but was pleasantly surprised to find used cd's at waaaaay better prices than Dimple. I picked up some MF Doom cd's and a Chain of Strength record. Then I went back today and picked up the Minor Threat album they had on their blog. It's a really good idea to become their friend on facebook because they update it all the time with new arrivals. That's how I found out about the Minor Threat record. They also have some awesome tapes there too. And they carry Nixon headphones which look awesome and apparently sound great two, The owners are really nice guys and don't give off the crappy attitude that makes me hate The Beat so much. Finally a nice record store where I don't feel like I have to take an hour to rummage through crap to find one thing I kind of like! I found 5 or 6 records I wanted, but had to be responsible and pick out only one for now (stupid bills!). And its well organized, the people who work here are friendly and the prices are reasonable. I figure that having Phono Select three blocks from the office has saved me about 1500 miles of driving to and from Amoeba Records in order to pick up the newest titles on In the Red and Siltbreeze (for about $5 less than Dimple (*IF* Dimple will get it))...plus whatever unexpected surprise I find in the new arrivals section. Any record store carrying new releases likes to say "We can order anything", but I think they mostly just say that 'cos they feel like they hafta, and I'm sure they'd prefer that no one ask for a special order. But Phono Select goes way above and beyond such trite record store lip-service. When you are a reliable repeat customer there, they actually ask what else you'd like to see there, and they go get it for you even if you don't promise to buy it. Few other stores around here have ever had the guts to go get some of the titles they carry. Not only do these guys know good music and even NEW music...They trust that someone among Sacramento record geeks will actually buy it. There's no "this is too cool for Sacto" excuse. I came here with my friend, Toni, for Phonoselect's grand opening. If you miss R5 (I know I do), you should come check this place out and give it some love. If you love music, this place is where it's at! It's a very sleek, modern looking environment and it's packed with tons of vinyl/cds/posters/shirts/books/pins from a variety of music genres. Their records are reasonably priced and their staff is very nice. I recognize a lot of them from R5. This is a fantastic record shop. I wish I had more time to just spend her digging through everything. It's got a nice selection of stuff and they really keep an eye on quality. While I like digging through cheap junk, there's something to be said for finding a lot of stuff that you want. I spent about 30 minutes just looking at the vinyl and never even got to the CDs. I probably could have spent more time my partner was getting antsy. It sort of reminds me of 1-2-3-4 Go! in Oakland, though their r&b/soul/ska stuff is better. I've heard many people say that Sacramento doesn't deserve to have kick-ass record stores, let's prove that wrong. One thing to mention, Phono Select has an incredible selection of zines. Yeah, the internet is great and all, but if you really want to find some mind blowing music, you're going to have to get your fingers inky my friend. But once inside I could immediately tell how much the owner loves and appreciates music and records. He has great imports of new records you won't find anywhere else in town. He has a vast selection of punk rock records you won't find anywhere else in several towns. EVERYTHING is meticulously organized and priced to sell. Great place to spend an afternoon(if you like the smell and feel of old vinyl!) They have a great selection of 12" and a lot of 7" reggae. The staff is friendly and I get updates of new music in the shop every month via email! The best part, better than Amoeba, is that they have listening stations. I saw this place while buying a gift for a friend at Sugar Plum Vegan. I was searching for a gift so I didn't get a chance to browse through the music, but all the extras they have, like buttons, magnetic buttons, shirts and other stuff was good enough. I found a gift for my cousin. I went up to pay and I was pleasantly surprised that the employees are nice. I'm glad there's a small record store so close to home. I come in here with my vinyl junkie boyfriend almost weekly. We love the selection of punk music Dal carries not only on vinyl but on cassette as well and it's nice that he advertises their new merch on Instagram (last purchased several Bad Brains tapes and an obscure Beastie Boys record.) There are a lot of albums here that you cannot find at places like Dimple Records, but some are a lot more expensive here too (when I've compared prices online at Discogs or at other places like Amoeba). Bottom line: pretty sweet place if you like the specific genre of music carried here. Well organized and worth the trip every time. read more

I stopped in here looking for country vinyl. The store has a modern/industrial aesthetic so I wasn't holding my breathe for that missing Hank Thompson LP. Happily, I found a Hank Thompson along with 4 other classic country LPs I didn't have. The prices were great and the co-owner working the register was really enthusiastic about the store and the atmosphere he's trying to create there. Very cool. The only downside is the condition of a lot of the vinyl was below what I would expect from a retail shop. read more

I spent over 2 hours here and went through pretty much every record in the store. Bottom line, this store is way overpriced. Although it has some really great selections of rare vinyl records but you can't charge $30 for a piece of record that other store only sells between $6-$12 come on. Dimples or Esoteric record stores are far better in terms of prices or Rasputin if you are in the Bay Area. A1 record if you are in New York. Awesome that places like this still exist. Funky, eclectic and made me feel like I was back in my hometown Seattle in the mid-90s. Love the hole in the wall setting in a desolate warehouse part of town. Best tape collection I have ever seen; I drove a Honda Civic '98 for three years that only had a tape player, and I was always on the lookout for cassettes. Accumulated quite a few at thrift stores, but wish I'd happened upon this gem before my head gasket blew and I had to buy another used '98 Honda Civic this summer, this time equipped with a CD player. Oh, the nostalgia of a tape collection. Takes me to the back seat of my mother's black mazda in 1993, listening to War's Low Rider and Cisco Kid. CD collection a little avant-garde and I wish they had more mainstream stuff, but the record selection appeared first-rate as well. Will definitely drop in from time to time. read more

Not only were they not open at noon, there was a handwritten note on the door that they were not going to be open for RSD. Their website and social media did not indicate they were not participating nor that they would be closed. An incredible selection of punk, post-punk, metal, reggae, and local VINYL/CASSETTES (and CDs). The owner/staff know their stuff and its fun to talk about music while there if you are a record geek. The store also supports local artists by keeping recordings in stock, hosting live shows in store, attending shows, stocking local 'zines, and giving jobs/internships to kids from the scene. I didn't get a chance to visit their former location in midtown, so this was my first experience at Phono Select. Definitely reminds me of an earlier time when record stores were a place that people would congregate and talk about music, shows, etc. And as a former record store clerk, I'm really picky about where I buy. I usually have specific things that I'm looking for or at least hope to find. Just came to browse the vinyl section so can't really speak for their CDs or tapes, but everything was categorized well. I really love how each album has a brief description written on it. I did actually buy one record on a whim that was described as a "UK indie rock band with sound similar to Gene Loves Jezebel and The Cult" (haven't listened to it yet)! The owner is very helpful and you can tell that he takes a lot of pride in this place. I found the prices reasonable (especially as a Bay Area resident where the cost of vinyl is skyrocketing). Left with some Bacharach, Jay-Z and Bad Brains. I saw a good amount of 45s but didn't have time to go through them all. Next time. I'll definitely be back! read more
