I was very surprised to find that this was a chain (or multi location restaurant, however you want to view it), but also very excited to see that there were locations in lovely Northern California. We did take out, so I can't speak to atmosphere or service. We're looking purely at food here folks. The menu selection was overwhelming. So many scrumptious choices and so little room in my already exploding stomach from a week of straight eating. Even for takeout the food was awesome. We had a great selection and shared family style, and fought family style. I love smaller portion size so it was perfect. I can only imagine how good the food would have been fresh from the kitchen. Came here last night for my boyfriends coworker who is leaving for medical school. I rarely come to La Jolla, but I'm so glad she picked this place! We sat outside and it was the cutest atmosphere. The restaurant is definitely nice, but it's not stuffy and uptight. The fresh bread and oil was amazing. My boyfriend and I had pho for breakfast (can you why haha) so we opted to share the pesto spinach ravioli? It was delicious! And they split it onto two plates for us, knowing we were sharing. I was hesitant to order a mixed drink as some places water them down..so I decided to start with a glass of prosecco. My boyfriend got their version of an old fashioned and it was so tasty and strong. We ordered 2 more each! I would totally recommend this place to friends and family. It would definitely be a perfect date night spot, but I really liked how they were so nice and accommodating to our large group...they don't do separate checks, but allow you to spilt it on however many cards/cash. Wow, you would never know we were in a recession from the looks of the dining room at Piatti. Even Sunday and Monday nights are bumpin'! Been here several times now... love dining on the cosy patio with it's super warm heaters and twinkle lights. Also love sitting at the bar listening to rich La Jolla folks hitting on each other! This place rivals Dobson's downtown for it's cougar hunting. The food is what's really worth coming in for, tho... they serve their bread with an amazing garlic-olive-oil infused creation that will haunt you all night, but is SOOO worth scarfing. The caprese salad is generous, delicious, and has a slightly nutty flavor that really sets it apart. Their brushetta is the best I've had anywhere... and hey, I've only gotten to the appetizers! Entrees are generous and delicious... veal, pasta, chicken... you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the spumoni is to die for! Service has been hit and miss, but it's never so bad as to miss the opportunity for a yummy meal such as this. Stop in the next time your down at La Jolla Shores! read more

I don't write reviews often and I apologise for that but after my experience the last time at this place I had to. The reason for the 1 stars is not the food nor the ambience. The food is great here and I love the dip that bring in with the complimentary bread. The wine list is also very good but the problem is at times the service. I have been here over 7-8 times and at times the service has been great and some times poor. But the last time I went with friends it was extremely bad so we tipped accordingly and to my surprise the owner called my friend who made the reservation complaining for not leaving enough tip. Can you believe that? Every time we go to the place out bill is between $180-200 and according to the service have tipped from 10 to 25%, even after that the owner or whoever the manager maybe calls you and says you have not tipped enough? And rather than asking for ways to avoid this judges you. This also happens to another guy who I know. He was asked is he had a good time after he had payed the bill and leaving. To which he replied yes so the guy says them you should tip at least 15%, making it onward for him in front of everyone so he had to do it. I don't know if this it will all Piatti restaurants but this one is like that. They should have a sign outside Saying minimums tip 15%. I hope the owner reads this. read more

Piatti was an amazing restaurant! I love Italian food and found Piatti on Yelp so my friends and I tried it out. It had a great atmosphere, wonderful workers who were very welcoming, especially our waitress, Jessica. She took care of us very well. She was helpful and fun. If you have her as your waitress you'll be truly satisfied. She really set the bar high for other waiters and waitresses. I had the orecchiette with sun dried tomatoes, grilled chicken and asparagus. It was well made, rich in taste. Get it if you love orecchiette. Overall you will not be disappointed going here. I highly recommend it for all you Italian lovers, and those who haven't tried Italian before, this is a perfect place to start. read more

I've visited Piatti multiple times and their pasta always impressed me -- my personal favorites are the mushroom retool, short rib cannelloni, and saffron pappardelle. And they have a great wine selection! However, during my last visit, their steak was a huge disappointment. The cut was mediocre, and the cooking was average at best. Thank you Yelp for helping me find a super delicious place for Italian food in La Jolla! The setting was lovely (we dined outside on the secluded patio, but the indoor dining-room looked just as beautiful). The menu had many choices of salads, paninis, brick oven pizzas, pastas, and meat dishes. The service was friendly and efficient. I started with an "Italian Mojito" which was a perfect warm weather drink of rum, muddled mint, lime, and Prosecco. Fantastic crusty, yet tender (and warm) bread was brought to the table with a delightful olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and fresh herb blend for dipping. Next was the "Chopped Romaine Salad" (fresh romaine, green olives, salami, artichokes, peppers, chick peas, provolone, parmesan, crostini, and a wonderful herb vinaigrette). It was easily large enough for two to share as a starter or one to have as a meal. For an entree I had the House-Made Ricotta Spinach Ravioli in tomato sauce with fresh basil. The pasta pockets were both tender and toothsome, and the bright, fresh tomato sauce complemented the creamy filling very well. My dining companion's Cavatappi with house-made Italian sausage, spinach, mushrooms, roasted tomatoes and parmesan was met with rave reviews. The highlight of the meal was the bread and dip -- both my friend's pasta dish and mine (parpadelli and ravioli) were on the bland side and lacked flavor. I went on Yelp beforehand to check out the reviews for Piatti, and I was a little skeptical at first. Despite the four stars, it's still a chain restaurant with locations all over California. But last night DEFINITELY settled my worries :) Like everyone else, I am obsessed with the olive, garlic and balsamic dip they have with their warm bread... and it was free! Too good to be true. Since I had so much bread with dip as a starter, I didn't want pasta or anything too carby, so I ordered the lemon marinated chicken with roasted tomatoes and corn - loved it! My friends also ordered the Rotolo and seafood seafood, and they both really liked their entrees as well. I especially love the atmosphere of this place. It's definitely classy, but not so uppity where you can't talk or anything. It's good for groups - we had a family sitting right next to us, but also good for dates. My wife and I had lunch there this past Sunday, after a rather strenuous hike. We were going to go lite, but after we heard about the day's special, we changed our plan. The punch line- we gave a 30% tip on top of the total, including wine and tax. My wife thought I was a big dramatic about it, but after I told her how much I really enjoyed the whole experience- food, service, ambiance- she was totally ok with it. We've been there several times before, so we expected a pleasant experience. This time, it was superb. Every other time it was packed and we had to wait, sometimes quite a while. I suppose Sundays around 1:00 is a good time to go there; we were seated immediately next to a nice window. We shared the special, then we shared the blueberry-ricotta cheese pancakes brunch as desert. With the wine, it made for a perfect Sunday lunch. read more

Awesome wines, talented bartender, good entrees and pretty courteous staff--they'll tolerate you if they suspect you plan on spending a lot on drinks. That's assuming you find parking before they give your table away. But once you flash some cash they'll love you again. Then the only people giving you dirty looks will be your fellow diners--most of which live up the hill not far away. For a place in LaJolla, these prices aren't bad. If only there were more to do in the area around dinnertime, maybe then I'd come here more often. read more

One of those places where the free bread and dip is so delicious that by the time your entree comes, you're shoulder deep in bread baskets, crumbs, and shame for not being classier and waiting for the entree. Pasta arrives perfectly al dente: which means 2 things 1) The noodles are slightly hard in the center, giving it a different teeth feel 2) The Chef knows EXACTLY what he's doing. Yelp does not disappoint! We went here after a kayak and snorkel tour just up the road for my fiance's birthday. I made reservations online, straight from yelp, sight unseen. We actually arrived early but they were able to seat us immediately. First note: since this is in La Jolla, locals may call it "casual" but I call it "dressy." Do not, I repeat do not, wear casual shorts and t-shirts or heaven forbid beachwear. (We changed from swimsuits into real clothing in our minivan which we parked a few blocks away after a harrowing search for parking on a Sunday afternoon.) They had a lovely specials menu to go along with the awesome normal menu, and we decided to split the salad special and each order different raviolis and share. They brought out some bread and dip as a starter. I got the lemony cheese ravioli from the normal menu and my fiance got the veggie ravioli from the special menu. We each ordered a glass of riesling and I gave half of mine to him since I was driving. When I told the waitress it was his birthday, she smiled in acknowledgment and said nothing more until a piece of tiramisu with a candle and two forks appeared! The bread and dip: one of the best dips I've ever had. Olive oil, balsamic vinegar, pressed roasted garlic, red pepper flakes, green bits of basil or parsley or something amazing. Served on a small plate with a basket of delicious bread. They brought us another serving before we could protest and (surprise, surprise) we ate it up. So much for saving room for dinner. The salad: quite literally THE BEST salad I have EVER had. It had a sweet vinaigrette dressing with a lemony flavor and a huge glop of either burrata or buffalo mozzarella cheese on top. It had other things too, but I was too busy eating to take note. I was trying to be gracious and let my fiance have as much as he wanted, but I don't think I succeeded. The raviolis: both were very good. I liked my lemony one better, but I wound up with both of our leftovers and his was darn good too! The beverages: they filter their own water onsite and bring it to you in a lovely glass bottle for free. It tastes very smooth and it nicely chilled without the need for any ice. Basically like sucking down bottled fiji water all night, but without feeling guilty. The riesling was good too, but we mostly chose it because my fiance loves rieslings and it was from Washington (like us). The dessert: a charming surprise. You always hope that upon announcing a birthday at a restaurant they will bring you something special, but sometimes they ask to see ID to confirm the birthday or charge you for the dessert. Not here. Just one of the best tiramisus I've had served with a candle and two forks. What's not to love? We almost ditched our reservation because we were salty, chilly, and tired from kayaking and snorkeling. Boy are we glad we sucked it up and changed our clothes and headed on over! read more

I wouldn't go here for a big party again like we did, but this quaint little place is perfect for smaller parties (not our 15 people one...) Based on the prices, I wasn't expecting this place to be crazy, but I was pleasantly surprised. Classy, classy, classy. This place screams class. Right by the ocean, downtown La Jolla, indoor and outdoor (which I highly recommend, even if it's chilly... their heaters won't fail you, we had to ask them to turn it down) seating, excellent service. Since we had a party of more than 9 people, they had us leave a credit card with them and if our party didn't show up, they'd charge $100 to the credit card (just FYI, but I wouldn't try coming here again with about more than about 4-6 people, like I said...) The bread is fantastic. The typical sauce is a little spicy and gives that a little kick... we couldn't stop eating it! Too good. I got the Pappardelle; the sauce in that dish was to die for. I ate every last bite and if I wasn't out in public, I would have licked my plate clean (in the literal sense). Mmmm... I also sampled a bit of my friend's gnocchi, but I preferred my dish over hers. With our big party arriving nearly 30 minutes late for our reservation, bringing out 15 people's food all at the same time, constant refills on bread, sauce, and drinks, all done without the slightest wince or grimace, this place's service definitely does it for me. ESPECIALLY when our waitress so graciously split our bill into 15 different cards and did not say anything about it. It was fast, polite, and never condescending. It was 5-star service. If just for the ambience and the food, I would have given this place 4 stars... but service kicked it up one more star. I think it might have had something to do with the fact that our party had so many people that it was a bit hard to revel in the surroundings and the tranquilty of the restaurant's settings. My wife and I went here for an anniversary dinner last week, and initially had only read Yelp and OpenTable reviews as a reason for choosing this location. That, and my wife really wanted an "italian restaurant that was in La Jolla near that beach". Upon setting up my reservation I had left a note saying it was our anniversary and that if they could seat us in a romantic area, I would be highly appreciative. Not only did they sit us outside under a beautiful big tree, but they also printed us our own menu with "Happy 2nd anniversary" printed along the top. The food: Spectacular. We shared a calamari and a seafood pasta (with marinara sauce), and outside of a trip to Italy, this stuff was the real deal. The service: Our waiter (Matthew) was one of the friendliest and most helpful waiter we have ever experienced. Because of my seats location outside, for about fifteen minutes as the sun was setting, I had sun in my eyes that was uncomfortable. Matthew was kind enough to stand there and hold a napkin up (for almost a minute or so...as a joke) to keep it out of my eyes. He also brought out a Tiramisu dessert on the house for us as an anniversary treat. Overal experience: Out of this world!!! Great food and setting in downtown La Jolla! Parking is hard to find but apparently they have a parking garage nearby. I got the daily special pasta: linguini with porcini mushrooms, toasted garlic, etc etc. My boyfriend always gets the seafood linguini with the mussels, clams, salmon, shrimp, squid ($19.95). I have been here twice and each time it just gets better. The first time I came here I came with my dad while he was in town and we decided that we were both in the mood for Italian food. If you get the chance to eat out back on the patio or even out front by the street TAKE IT! The back patio is gorgeous and so romantic, and the front by the street is just as nice. I was worried about being cold, but the staff assured me that their heaters would keep me worm and they were correct. They even came out and offered me a fleece blanket for my lap without me even having to ask. The waitstaff is very friendly and helpful and patient with new customers. They recommend their favorites and never once have I been lead astray. My dad took the recommendation of the saffron pappardelle pasta even though he has had very poor experiences with saffron and loved every bite! The starter bread with their homemade dipping sauce is to die for as well as their lemon sauce that they put on some of their pastas. I would seriously come back JUST for the bread and lemon sauce. You really can't go wrong here. and don't you DARE skip dessert. I was back 5 days later with my boyfriend so that I could treat HIM to a romantic night out and he loved it just as much, if not more than I did :) 10 out of 10 would go again read more

If you sit outside, try to make sure there are no birds in the giant tree above you. These birds were flocked around the little fruits that grow on the top, and seeds/random tidbits kept raining down on my food and drink. Not a major concern for me, but I'm sure someone else would get upset. The setting is nice, atmosphere is warm, food is good...but the best part about it was the freshly baked bread. Not a huge fan of stuffing a lot of garlic into the dip, but the bread itself was delicious - don't you hate it when you get cold bread at a restaurant? The location of Piatti-La Jolla is ideal. Surfers, college students, business people, rich people, people who look like they don't have money but do-basically everyone can come here and afford an above average meal at this great Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was great. We walked in at lunch time on a Saturday with no problem getting seats (But I'm thinking that dinner is probably more crowded, so reservations are recommended for larger groups. You can do this on their website!). We got seated and immediately got sour dough bread and olive oil with other spices and herbs. This was the best part of Piatti. I really believe that the bread in any restaurant reflects how well the food will come out, and this was no exception. I ordered the Penne Pasta with Lamb (I don't really remember the name, but it did have D'Angelo or something near that in the name). The lamb was extra tender, and the pasta and sauces were cooked just right. Everything was great and our water was filled constantly. I don't think I ever had my cup not filled with water at any point (so the service is great). Everything else my friends ordered looked good as well. The Paninis are awesome. Try the Funghi! One word: Yum. The mushroom is so thick it tastes like meat, and has the same texture. Crazy stuff. Well, we didn't get to have any desert, but I'll probably go back here because the prices were average for an upscale Italian restaurant and the food tasted great. Also, try to sit outside. We decided for inside seating, but we sat near the front of the restaurant near a glass exit door and the main front windows, so we had all that natural light coming in. Oh, and there's a full bar. There are even bar stools to sit on, so I bet people can enjoy some drinks there. Piatti Ristorante made such a great impression on us; I made it a point to remember to write this even though it's been over a quarter year since we've dined there. We had a reservation at Piatti for around 8:30PM but showed up about an hour and a half early after a short stroll at La Jolla Cove. It wasn't too busy on this Thursday evening so they had no problem seating us that early. The venue had a very warm romantic feel, but yet was still very casual and relaxed. We couldn't help but feel at ease at our table. We liked the chilled bottle of water they bring to your table. It's a lot classier than a tacky pitcher and it is also more convenient for both the server and us, considering I drink water like a camel. Not to mention, it's a touch romantic when you're refilling your partner's glass, even if it's with substance as simple as water. Deserving its own separate line: Piatti bread dipping oil. Nothing else compares. Unfortunately, I cannot remember everything we ordered that night. We had two appetizers. The most memorable appetizer was the carpaccio. In ever restaurant we dine, if they serve carpaccio, we order it. Since dining at Piatti, they've set the standard for our palettes in that dish. Our entrées were fairly simple. I had gemelli pasta with a red sauce and sausage. My lady had something in a white sauce. Again, I wish I could remember exact details, but I just can't recall. (Keep in mind, we were in La Jolla for a romantic getaway, and Piatti definitely was the kind of place that allowed me to keep my focus on her.) Either way, both those dishes were spectacular. For dessert, we shared a slice of flourless chocolate cake. ::SIGH:: I can't seem to find that dessert too many places and was so thankful that it was on the Piatti menu. Solid 4 stars. I've been here a couple times and I go just for the bread, garlic balsamic oil dip, atmosphere and service. Food-wise, it's okay. I ordered the braised lamb pasta and it wasn't that good. There wasn't enough sauce so, it was just pasta noodles and chunks of lamb. The lamb was tender but the taste just wasn't savory enough. The Rotolo is good. It's heavy but its cheesy, with mushrooms and spinach. The Fusilli is also very good if you want something more 'italian'. It's pretty much tomato sauce with italian sausage and they are generous with the ingredients. The grilled chicken pasta was also really good, but also on the heavier side because it's with a creamy white sauce. Definitely try it out if you are in La Jolla. read more

Easily one of the best meals I've had in a long, long time. We shared the braised lamb pasta, and took the server's advice to substitute the long, flat noodles. The sauce was incredible, and the lamb , I kid you not, melted on my tongue. We sat at the bar and shared a casual, friendly conversation with a female bartender. The space itself is beautiful--rustic and homey, but with a casual elegance that feels effortless. The wine list is to die for, full of fantastic Italian and California labels that wooed even my own obnoxious, snobby self. The issue here, of course, is parking, a common theme in the La Jolla Shores area. I understand that they offer valet, but for someone in my economic demographic, it's a bit of an unnecessary expense. Piatti isn't terribly overpriced, but you should expect to spend in the arena of $15-$25 for your entree. It's a great date spot, somewhere that won't exactly break the bank, but quaint and elegant enough to impress. Our family celebrated our daughter's birthday at Piatti's. When I checked out the menu online I cringed: there was not much to choose from for a vegan, gluten-free person. But I went with a great attitude: after all it was just one meal. I have driven past the La Jolla exit on my way to San Diego countless time but had never stopped there. I'm so glad I was able to visit this beautiful city. We arrived early and strolled to the beach, stopping at shops along the way. It was a perfect day: blue skies, light breeze, and temperature not too hot not to cold. We sat on the patio. Our server was very attentive. I let him know that I was vegan and gluten-free. No problem! He let me know that for any pasta dish, they can substitute sautéed spinach for the pasta. I love that idea! As for the vegan part, let him know what combination of vegetables I want on my spinach - no problem since each dish is prepared individually. I decided to use the combination from the Linguine al Salmon (minus the salmon of course!). That combination is capers, kalamata olives, onions, herbs and, olive oil. We added tomatoes to the mix. My dinner was delicious. Here is want the rest of our party got: Ravioli Al Limone / side by side - half lemon cream half tomato sauce. The tomato sauce was okay but the lemon cream made my daughter's eyes roll back in her head. Really excellent! Cannelloni - was okay. But he likes intense favor. He felt the filling didn't match well with the sauce - it would have been better with a lighter, cream sauce. Cavatappi - spicy sausage, spinach over pasta. Good stuff! Would order again. There was a generous serving that was enough for two meals. Bistecca - grilled rib-eye steak with garlic mashed potatoes. It was well done but with some burnt parts. The mashed potatoes were good. Big serving that made two meals. Margherita pizza - curst was awesome! How can a thin crust pizza be crunchy on the outside but fluffy on the inside? Well, I have been to this restaurant at least 20 times. It was my fathers favorite spot for Sunday brunch / lunch. My take? nothing to write home about. I think the most flavorful thing here is the garlic infused oil that they provide with the bread (ps: the bread is always cold and has flakes of sea salt...but oh well I can never resist bread ..even if íts rotten). Starters: There is a salad that they wrap in prosciutto and then grill....my favorite, but it does get old. The canelloni filled with ricotta cheese, your average T.V dinner stuff The veal is pretty good but it is pricey and the worst thing about this restaurant and the one that deducts many stars is: their crappy service! from the host/hostess to the wait staff, to the managers....they simply dont care. It is like, they know people will keep coming regardless so they dont give a freaking fly. Not very romantic, not really good for groups, sup par food. Just avoid it read more

I live just down the street from this wonderful place and go often. I can tell you that while it is often filled to the rim with regulars and tourists alike, you'll want to wait for a great table here. The outdoor patio is always nice or quite honestly the bar tables are even better. The bread and dipping sauce are so addicting but have a toothbrush handy afterwards.....nice and garlicky. I've heard that the lasagna is just ok so if you're a newcomer go for something unique. I personally love the Rotolo or the Cavatappi. Both are amazing. I've also had the Orecchiette which is pretty amazing as well. The wine list is very nice and I don't think you'll choke on the prices either. A recommendation is to try a pre dinner cocktail...say maybe the Cucumber Gimlet? Finish off with their delicious coffee and Tiramisu. I know I know...overdone? Nah not at this place. It has a creme anglaise sauce surrounding it. I'll keep coming back! The nice thing is that they get to know you and will remember you every time you return. I like that. read more

I went to Piatti last night and it blew me out of the water. There's a lot I can say about the lovely decor, soft lighting, and lovely location near the beach, but this review will focus on the delicious food. Every morsel was prepared to perfection, even the "sweet breads," which--to my horror--my husband told me were actually thymus's sauteed in a buttery mushroom gravy. If Piatti can make a thymus taste good, that says a lot about the chef. The bread was super crusty on the outside, yet warm and soft on the inside. The dipping sauce was the food of the gods....the garlic gods! We ordered a delightfully drinkable Seghieso Zinfandel 2008- TRY IT!. My salad- butter lettuce with pears, walnuts, butter lettuce, and pomogranate seeds was nothing out of the ordinary, but tasty. For my entree I ordered a pizza topped with rosemary, pancetta, portabellos, and onions sauteed in a balsamic reduction. It was the best thin crust pizza I've had (the award to thick crust pizzas goes to Zachary's in Berkeley). After eating all this delicious food, we were tempted to skip dessert, but we knew better. We ordered a carmel apple bread pudding a la mode. It was rich and buttery, and caramely without being too sweet: heaven! The only slight downside was that our waitress was a little impatient with us. If we browsed the menu a few seconds too long while she was at the table or if it was your turn to order but you paused before ordering, she'd try to hurry things along. It ended up being fine...she lightened up toward the end of the night and we were able to joke around with her. Piatti is a fabulous dining experience, very deserving of a 5 star rating! read more

Everything we had was delicious! The bread and olive oil balsamic dip was yummy. My friend and I both got the non-alcoholic Ginger Julep drink, which was refreshing. We were both undecided on what to order and our waitress recommended that we split two entrees so we could try two different things. So we split the saffron pappardelle with shrimp and the orecchiette with chicken and gorgonzola cream sauce. It was perfect!! We didn't try the desserts because we were both too full. We stumbled upon this place mainly because it was a 5 min walk from Kellogg Park with the amazing playground by the sea. The food was a mixed bag. The cibatta bread with that olive oil/balsamic dip was amazing. The starters were really good. We ordered the polenta with sautéed mushrooms. Our two year old loved it although I had to cut up the mushrooms somewhat. We ordered two mains, lasagna and a seafood fettuccini. The fettuccini was pretty good but I though the lasagna was a little bland for my taste. By then the little one had had it up to his hilt and was letting us know about it. We didn't try dessert. Would go back again if I was in the area for the park. A bit of advice about child friendliness. The wait staff are great with kids and they do have high chairs. The only tricky thing is that they have paper covering a white table cloth so my advice is getting an ipad or giving them something to do to pre occupy their time. The last thing you want is for the little one to pull on the paper or the table cloth and create a scene..... read more

I loved this restaurant. The food is fantastic and the service exceptional. If you can get into Jessica's section, do - she is smart and sassy and fun as well as super-efficient, and she'll tell you off-menu order options that are great. Food: don't miss the ravioli in lemon cream sauce, or the penne with lamb. The cauliflower cakes are a delicious appetizer, and the carpaccio with arugula, capers and padano cheese is divine. Drink: they have a Tokaji dessert wine which is a dream, especially when paired with the cheesecake. read more
