3/29/2026 TAKE OUT PIZZA REVIEW ONLY Hubby was craving pizza when we arrived. There were a couple of choices in the area but he ordered from here as we walked around town. Now, there's soggy pizza after a cooked one sits for a while and there's soggy pizza because the bottom crust was not cooked well. This evening it was the latter for this place. Isola Pizza Bar in La Jolla is a branch of their Little Italy pizza restaurant. Indoor Outdoor Dining and pup friendly. Street parking may be a challenge unless you live nearby and can walk here :) As mentioned in previous reviews, Pizza is a favorite food of mine but like for most, it's subjective, because there's a pizza style everyone likes and prefers. Izola Pizza mostly makes Neapolitan style pizza with the bubbly burnt chard crust which I'm not a hugh fan of. Have visited this restaurant a few times and while the service was very nice and accommodating, the pizza was always a Hit or Miss... usually the later. A thicker crust pizza made with sardines and olives ingredients from the Ligurian coast was so appealing, it made me reminisce of my visit to Cinque Terra which are the five villages of the Italian coast. The villages north of cinque Terra are the closer to the Liguria coast which I didn't have a chance to visit due to travel schedule conflict. Curiously ordered this pizza which seemed amazing as it looked but upon the first and second bite, it was No, the flavors were off. The sardines and the sauce somehow did not pair well. The waiter was apologetic and removed the pizza. I just drank the lemon water to wash away that lingering taste, which was not for me. On other occasions I have had great calamari fritto misto and the Spicy honey pizza with extra cheese which were both really delicious and would recommend both and the portions were generous. Service was great by waiter JV and seating outdoor sun shaded patio was lovely. This restaurant has no view of the ocean. If you're in the La Jolla and just want Neapolitan style pizza and other interesting selections on the menu, Isola might be worth a try. read more

Good pizza spot in little Italy. Their happy hour is pretty good with some of their pizzas being half off and pasta dishes are great.

My fiancé and I love this spot! We've tried everything on their pizza and happy hour menus. I'm sure they have good salads, bruschette, pasta, and entrees, but we typically come here for their pizzas. Their red sauce is so flavorful and a little watery (makes a good spread), the crust is SO good (literally my favorite in San Diego), and the toppings are all fun and go great together. The crust is chewy enough to not fall apart, soft enough to not hurt your teeth, and firm enough to keep (most of) the toppings on it. It's also adequately salted! I think my favorite pizza is the Salamino Piccante, because it has red sauce, spicy meat, and fresh basil. The perfect combo!! On Tuesdays (for takeout only) it's $25 for a pizza of your choice and a second pizza of Isola's choice. We have never been disappointed, but sometimes it does seem like they throw together whatever they are trying to get rid of on Tuesdays for those pizzas. They also have happy hour (HH) Mon-Fri, although the hours are slightly different depending on the day. They have some HH options that are familiar and comforting, and some less common options that taste equally as delicious. My favorite happy hour item is the farinata. It's crispy and comes with the right amount of yummy dipping sauce. I'm not used to having chickpea fries, so these were a welcome dish to try. Service is always super friendly here, and they recognize my fiancé when he comes by to pick up our pizzas (he ain't no stranger). Ambiance is...elevated casual? Or maybe just La Jolla casual? You don't need to dress up but you can tell they put some real effort into making the interior design cohesive. We will continue to come here for the pizza deals, and hopefully eventually get around to trying the rest of the menu! read more

We had dinner here this past week. We had reservation reservations to another restaurant who turned us away because of our little dog. Isola was very welcoming and sat us within 15 minutes even on a busy Friday. We tried their delicious woodfired pizzas as well as the cacio e pepe. The pasta was absolutely amazing! Pizzas were delicious as well. Excellent and attentive service. But the best part was, I realized I accidentally left my purse on one of the seat seats, and I called back about an hour later and they can found it and held onto it after closing, and I was able to pick it up the next morning with no issue. Our service was very good. We were a party of 7 with two young children and our server was attentive and recommended some options for the kiddos. The food gets a mixed review. We ordered roasted Brussel sprouts and they came out pretty black but still pretty crunchy and hard - liked they were cooked a bit too hot in the oven. The Arincini was ok. The rice did not see like it was cooked well enough. I loved the pizza - particularly the Prosciutto and Arugula. The Margherita was also a solid choice. The wine list had some good BTG options - Nebbiolo Rose and Aglianico stood out. I noted a lot of options from indigenous Selections - a lovely Italian importer, but they were mostly bottle list only. They also carried Menabrea beer, a better alternative to Peroni. We sat out on the patio - where they put the heat on for us immediately, but there was also ample indoor space. I would come back here, but I would stick with the pizza! read more

My party of 3 came to visit Isola after an event in downtown LJ on a Sunday. There weren't that many tables left but we didn't have to wait. We got a veggie plate, lasagna, and two pizzas to share. The veggie plate was alright, but it was what we were expecting, just roasted veggies. The lasagna was pretty good, with a nice herby red sauce. The pizzas had good chewy dough but were on the drier side, and also very salty. I also wish the basil leaves weren't just huge, raw pieces, it just made it a bit messy to eat. But overall it was a fine pizza though. They are personal-sized and only 4 pieces. I thought the prices were a bit high for the food, but it is La Jolla. Don't think I'd come back as there are other great Italian spots in San Diego, but it decent food for a random walk-in. read more

This is not a "pizza place" as much as it is a legit italian restaurant. The owner is Italian, named the place after his nonna Isola, and stays true to the tradition with the menu and the quality. I ordered the "Verdure al forno" which is listed with the salads, and it is in fact (as stated on the menu) just roasted veggies. Again, legit Italian, as promised, so I ate my veggies and felt uncultured for expecting anything different. The fresh tomato sauce on the pizza and fresh spots of mozzarella on the Margherita are identical to pizza in the old country. As an added bonus, you won't walk out feeling heavy and sleepy, which is what I expect after taking down a full pie. read more

They have a great happy hour menu - 2:30-5 on MTW; 3-5 on ThF. We were there at 4:58, and the waitress accommodated us. Had smaller orders of appetizers like calamari, garden salad & polenta bites. They offered same size orders of pizza at a fraction of a price. All the food was tasty. Service was great overall - friendly & attentive. Only complaints were Minor -- our reservation was missing when we got there &that othey have only one fryer so could not separate items to accommodate my friend's shellfish allergy. read more

I stopped in here with my parents as our first stop on my mom's birthday food crawl. I've visited La Jolla for over 25 years during the summer to get away from the Arizona heat, but never ventured to this street. We ordered a few bottles of wine and had an appetizer. We ordered the Gamberetti Alla Diavola which was honestly so tasty. The dish was $18 and for the price, it was filled with shrimp. Our server brought us extra bread to soak up the delicious juice. He also brought us some of their special olive oil because of how good he said it was. He was correct. I didn't enter the interior of the restaurant, but the patio had a nice charm to it. Our server was very informative on items and made us feel welcomed. I will definetely be coming back to have a whole meal. I will give our experience a 8/10. read more

A good choice when you're craving pizza, but want to be a little fancy. Lots of nice outdoor seating to enjoy the fresh evening air. The pizzas are quite filling (assuming you get one pizza per person). Polipo: Probably the first time I had an octopus dish that was refreshing. I'm used to whole charred tentacles that are full of richness, so usually delicious but not refreshing. In this dish the octopus was sliced into rounds and tossed in a tangy sauce with mellow potatoes and crisp celery. Not quite sure if it's officially a salad, but this is definitely the kind of salad I'd like. Margherita DOP: When trying a new pizza place, I like to stick with the basics of just sauce and cheese. That way I can evaluate the pizza quality without being biased by fancy toppings. Really loved the tomato sauce! Was high quality and tasted like San Marzano. The buffalo mozzarella was nice, but I wish they were a little more generous with the portion. The dough seem oddly unequal. You either had almost paper thin portions covered in sauce or thick crust like breadsticks. When there's too much crust I automatically think they got skimpy on the sauce and cheese. read more

We had been to Isola several times before and we liked the food and the service. This time was very different. We were a party of six, 4 adults and 2 children (both are in their late teens). Got in around 4:45pm. We each ordered a pizza and I also ordered roasted veggie appetizer. We were there approximately an hour. We paid the check. 5 minutes after we paid, the hostess girl told us if we could leave in 5 minutes as the table was reserved. They never told us anything about a reservation until this point. We left without saying anything. Food: overly salty, both the appetizer and the funghi pizza. Our server was not really attentive. Will not come back.
