Space Case 308-acre preserve located not too far from the Saratoga-Cupertino border that's quite the hidden gem. The Good: *Free! *Fairly large paved parking lot *Restroom at the beginning of the trail near the winery *And speaking of winery, historic Picchetti Winery is right there so you can do a hike and schedule a wine tasting on the same day. Great spot for dates (hint hint). *Great place for wildlife and wildflowers! *If you have a kid that's obsessed with lizards, bring them here. So many salamanders! But please, don't let your kids harass them. *Equestrian trails (only certain ones) *Lots of options for small loops *Trails are in pretty good shape and mostly shaded. The Meh: *No dogs The Ugly: *The actual park only features a paltry 3.7 miles of trails, but their trails do connect to Stevens Creek County Park to extend your hike, if you wish. Conclusion: Great park for visitors of all ages, but especially if you're a wino. read more

I had no idea this place existed and in Cupertino no less, but so glad to have found it! There was plenty of parking at 9am on a Saturday and even when we left close to noon, there was still lots of spots. There are multiple trails you can do, I did the Zinfandel trail which is an out and back. It's not incredibly difficult but does have some uphill portions to keep it fun and majority of the trail is shaded with just a few patches of direct sun that you can just walk quickly through. Saw some deer and lots of lizards running around. Be mindful of poison oak. Overall it was a really great hike and it wasn't packed with people so it was really enjoyable and I for sure got a good workout in. read more

Took the kids hiking today after brunch and was only expecting to see banana slugs but there was quite the bloom of fungi everywhere! My daughter loves spotting mushrooms so I've been encouraging her to learn their names and identifying them. I've taught her that all mushrooms are okay to touch but not all are edible. This was our 13th anniversary excursion. We love trail hiking all over Santa Cruz and Monterey County. Like life, with a trail you never know what you're going to get, and we enjoyed the first mile or so, similar to a flatter Garland Park, but we then soon found ourselves dodging slowly and carefully past poison oak and dry grass overgrowth, speckled with hungry wood ticks. We were on the Zinfandel Trail and it seemed like we could loop back around, via a fire road that turned out to be a private property no trespassing scene, so after backtracking to the Zinfandel trail and taking our shoes off to cross a creek and hiking onto a main road (that felt dangerous with passing cars). The past leg had us walking up a very steep wide trail (tippy toes steep) and back to the main trailhead. We liked the winery area near the heritage site, but decided the hike would be a 4/5 with some much needed trail Steward maintenance. read more

Picchetti Open Space Preserve is the kind of place that makes you forget you live in the Bay Area -- in the best way possible. Just a short drive from the chaos of Cupertino traffic, you're suddenly in a scene that feels lifted from a Tuscany postcard. Rolling hills, old stone buildings, chirping birds, and the kind of filtered sunlight that makes everything glow a little golden. The trails are perfect for light hiking (read: no scary elevation surprises, and yes, I wore sneakers and still felt cute). I went with my 5-year-old and she had the time of her life spotting deer and pretending she was in a forest fairy movie. Bonus: plenty of shaded paths, which is a lifesaver if you're not a sun-worshipper. What makes it special, though, is the history. The old Picchetti Winery building still stands -- rustic, charming, and open for tastings on weekends. There's something quietly magical about sipping wine near an orchard while the breeze carries the scent of eucalyptus and earth. It's a rare kind of peace. read more

Been hitting hiking trails all over the Bay. They are all so unique it's hard to say which is my favorite. Enjoyed visiting Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve. We parked at Picchetti Winery because the start of the Zinfandel Trail begins here. It's a 1.9 mile trail one way. -Makes for a great 4 mile trail if you go out and back. It's primarily covered with a few short exposed areas. The trail has wild blackberries growing on the side but please don't reach for the ones in the back. The bushes are thorny, and are on a slope. If your not careful, you're going to fall down the steep sides. When you get back to the parking lot you can enjoy a nice glass of Picchetti Pinot. It's a lighter Pinot and nice on the pallet. You can picnic at the winery. It's got shaded picnic areas in the morning. Picchetti will even provide wine glasses if you buy a bottle or glass and leave your ID as collateral for the glass. A picnic with wine is always a nice way to end a hike. read more

When the weather is nice I have to go outside and get dirt on my sneakers. A little fresh air and exercise makes a huge difference in my state of mind, so I try to hike as much as possible. Straddling Saratoga and Cupertino in the foothills of the Santa Cruz range Stevens Creek County Park and the adjacent Picchetti Ranch Preserve are full of options close to home so I go here frequently. The various picnic areas, parks and hiking trails can be accessed from S DeAnza via Pierce Road or from N Foothills Blvd via Stevens Creek Canyon Rd. I go in both ways depending on where I plan to stop, but none of the areas have a lot of parking so sometimes it's hit-and-miss with regards to where I will stop. To avoid this and get your pick try visiting on weekday mornings or very early on weekends. One of my favorite short hikes starts on Bear Meadow Trail at Stevens Creek Canyon Rd across from the reservoir and climbs 1.2 miles, ending at the Picchetti Winery. It's a pretty easy hike except for a 200 yard section on Orchard Loop Trail which is quite steep and has no tree cover so prepare to sweat as you grind your way up this part, going down is also a little tricky because the soil is loose. Be careful. Parking at the bottom of the trail is limited, only 4 or so spaces, but there are more spots across the road and down 20 yards by the rez. You could also park in the Madrone lot and there are decent public restrooms there which is a plus. Parking in the lot at the top of the trail by the winery is also an option, but I personally prefer to climb in the first half and be rewarded with a descent back in the second half, and if you park by the winery that experience will be reversed. Up and back is about 2.5 miles. Not a big commitment really, and the scenery is fantastic. I shouldn't be telling you about my secret spots because I prefer to hike when there are no people around, especially now, but hey, you need this too. Maybe I'll see you there some time. read more

For an open space preserve, this one is definitely on the small side! At just 308 acres, Picchetti Ranch OSP is a quaint and beautiful place to enjoy a leisurely hike. At the head of the preserve is the historic Picchetti Winery, established by the Picchetti family in 1896. Come here for some wine tasting, then walk off the wooziness on a nice hike! GETTING THERE: --------------------------- The preserve is easily accessible from Silicon Valley. From 280, exit on Foothill Blvd (which turns into Stevens Canyon Rd), and turn right onto Montebello Rd. The roads are paved and not too windy. Continue till you see this sign (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/picchetti-ranch-open-space-preserve-cupertino?select=hsd-OWG5EBsvCStuUjmmBA#ZlVwnG26ST10nuyZgG_E4w). The parking lot holds about 50 cars, more than some of the larger preserves in the region. THE WINERY: --------------------------- Enjoy walking through the winery with its rustic buildings and old wine barrels, and if you look hard enough, you may even see a peacock! Go wine tasting and enjoy live music at the same time. There's a restroom shack on site, with actual toilets and sinks! Compared to other preserves, that's high class! THE HIKE: --------------------------- Next to the winery is the start of the Zinfandel Trail (appropriately named), the main trail running through the preserve. This trail runs only 2 miles before entering into the adjacent Stevens Creek Country Park, and is relatively flat till near the end of the Picchetti portion. The trail starts over a small footbridge, with a small stream running under it. Nice way to set the mood for a pleasant hike. Along the trail is a pond that apparently only has water after the rainy season! The Zinfandel Trail also connects to the Bear Meadow Trail, a shorter trail in the preserve. If you get on this trail, be warned that coming back on the Orchard Loop Trail has a pretty serious incline. It totally kicked our butts! Other than that one part, gentle paths and lush vegetation are the mark of this preserve. Enjoy grassy fields, the occasional stream, and a wide variety of trees lining the trails. But for those looking for a place to enjoy scenery with easy walking, and maybe wine tasting too, this place is perfect. This is one of the smaller Open Space reserves, but is within an easy drive the South Bay if you need to reconnect with nature and don't want to deal with the insane crowds that plague Rancho San Antonio on the weekends. Once you get past the commotion around the winery grounds, you'll encounter fewer people as you wend your way through the easy trails in this preserve. Although it officially has less than 4 miles of trails, there are a number of non-marked trails through the preserve that can extend your exploration. Also, if you continue down along the Zinfandel trail, you'll eventually cross into Stevens County Park, and, if you desire, you can hike directly into Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. So, you can make this as long or as short of a trip as you want. Within the preserve itself, the trails are decidedly gentle. You won't need fancy hiking boots or walking sticks here. You've got a good chance of seeing some wildlife here, and not just the newts that also seem intent on crossing the trails. On our last trip here, we saw a group of four deer grazing along the trail and a family of quail. What we didn't see was a lot of other hikers. So, this is a nice place to find a little peace. What you won't find here, however, is quiet - with the gun club and the quarry nearby, you'll hear gunshots and rock smashing. But it's still a great place for an impromptu escape. read more

This was a gorgeous hike! There was lots of parking available when we arrived around noon on a Saturday. There are a few different trails you can take, of varying difficulty. We did a few and all of them have gorgeous views and a nice mix of sun and shade, incline and flat ground. It feels surreal only living 15 minutes away from here because it truly feels like the middle of nowhere (in a good way!) We intended to wine taste at Pichetti but it was SO packed there was nowhere to stand or sit. Next time! read more

Beautiful! On a warm February afternoon (thank you, California!), the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. What this open space preserve lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and beauty. I really like hiking and I enjoy wine tasting every now and then. At the Picchetti OSP (pronounced "piketti"), you can do both! The scenery isn't as breathtaking as some other hiking locations in the bay area, and the trails aren't very difficult, but it's a good place to do some light hiking. The main trail is called Zinfandel, which is super cute. After hiking, reward yourself for the exercise with some wine tasting! They've increased the wine tasting fee to $10 (used to be $5, that's a 100% markup!), but they waive it if you purchase wine from them. I'm not very savvy when it comes to wine, but my friends have said that some of their wines are really good, like the Tempranillo. I love the design of their wine bottles - it looks like someone took a gold sharpie and just wrote on the bottle. I love the look so much that I saved an empty bottle that we bought and finished off. The next time I go back, I want to buy a bottle of the Mission Angelica, which is a very sweet dessert wine, because that bottle has an angel wing incorporated into the design - it's very cute. Adjacent to the wine tasting room, there is an area with tables so you can have a picnic. My friends and I did that once. We brought a bunch of food and bought a bottle of wine (they lend you some glasses to use). And there are two male peacocks that roam around while you eat. There is a parking lot - it's not huge, but it's free! And the drive up here is not too windy. Hike, drink, and be merry! read more

Be-U-T-ful! I don't think I have ever been that close to a peacock before this hike. We encountered at least 2 on this hike, and were even greeted by one in the parking lot. The color of the peacock was so brilliant, it was surreal.The nice peacock even walked with us towards the trail. I think he was actually trained to guide us to the winery, but they were closed. Boo hoo... However, I am not sure how I would fair on some of the narrow sections of this hike after a few sips of vino. Eeeek! If you go further into the mountain side, the drop is steep! Keep your footing and you will be good. I like this hike because it reminds me of Castle Rock up on Highway 9 near Saratoga, and you get a great view of the Santa Cruz mountains without a hefty drive into the hills. The lake is also very inviting but kinda felt like there could be a murky creature living in there. I know, I know. I am a grown woman, but the kid in me likes to creep into my consciousness once in awhile. read more

QT with my husband. Finally! " What do you want to do? I don't know. What do you want to do? How bout a hike? Ok. Where do you want to go? How bout Rancho San Antonio? Nah, let's try something new." So we did although later did we discover that the trails hook up to Rancho San Antonio. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful drive up to the winery. Behind, the winery, you'll find trails that lead to other various trails. We did a 2 hour hike which gave a great view of the reservoir. It's a great trail where you're shaded by the trees and the sun isn't beating down on you. Watch where you're walking as the ground can be a bit unstable toward the edge as my husband experienced it, slipping down the hill. He was okay but I'm sure the two little ole ladies walking towards us were quite amused. We didn't try the winery but it sure did look inviting after our long hike. read more

I've found it notoriously difficult to successfully combine hiking trips with any other activity, simply because hiking gets you dirty and most other activities are best enjoyed not dirty. But seeing as the Picchetti Ranch hiking trails start literally behind the Picchetti Winery, combining these is a no-brainer. I recommend doing the tastings first (see my separate review of the winery on this), then taking a leisurely stroll up the trail. Don't worry about being too sleepy from the wine to get in a good hike; this is a small preserve anyway (barely 300 acres) and even a short walk over to the pond and vista point (which looks out over Stevens Creek Reservoir) will give you a good taste. It's all old vineyard land so there's a sort of rural-but-not-wild feel that's pretty rare in California. It's especially bucolic near sunset. You can also make a much more ambitious hike that starts here and heads over into Stevens Creek County Park and Fremont OSP, but in that case, you probably wouldn't want to go wine tasting before *or* after. read more

This is a short trail right next to the Picchetti Winery, so do a quick hike and then enjoy some wine afterwards is a good idea The total length of the whole OSP, according to my tracker, is 3.22 Miles, but I did the round trip on Bear Meadow Trail which is 1.4 Miles, and one way down on Zinfandel Trail, towards Stevens Creek County Park, about another .8 Miles, those are just one way up and one way down trails. If you are just doing the Orchard Loop Trail including cut through the Vista Trail, it is about 1 mile. There is a steep 0.2 mill uphill climb on the eastern side. The trails are well maintained, although very dusty, so bring some slipper to change to after the hike if you want to stay for the wine (not required, just a suggestion) Overall, good and short trail. Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve - Parks Near Me - Cupertino, California

Beautiful trail network at the entrance to the Picchetti Winery. I highly recommend stopping by for an afternoon hike, a wine tasting at the vineyard (literally, the same parking lot), and a picnic lunch at the tables in the front yard at the vineyard. The views from the trail are lovely. It's quiet and serene, and before long, after travelling along the Zinfandel trail, you'll encounter the most beautiful panoramic views of the southern peninsula, all the way to the bay. Travel along the Zinfandel trail long enough (read: one mile) and you'll run into the Stevens Creek Open Space Preserve and its own network of trails. We crossed walk bridges in the woods, found bay leaves growing in the wild (I'd never seen a bay leaf on a tree before!), and discussed the terrifying ridiculousness of having to fight off a mountain lion. Thank God the creature I found around a bend in the midst of this conversation was a blue-shirt-clad human being and not a gigantic mountain lion. As a side note, I don't ever want to have to fight a mountain lion. MAYBE if the mountain lion is blindfolded and only allowed to use one paw AND I have a giant walking stick. Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve - Walkbridge on the trail in the middle of the woods - Parks Near Me - Cupertino, California

Great hiking trail starting at the Picchetti Winery. First part is pretty open, but then trail goes deeper in the woods - tall trees and cool air. When there is a break, you can enjoy beautiful views of Stevens Creek Reservoir, surrounding mountains and valley. There are some creeks on the trail, up and down hills but overall it is not that hard hike. Perfect for few hours of good walking in the woods. It is not a loop back trail so you have to go in and come back the same way, but at the end of the trail there is a picnic area where you can sit down and have a little break - there are bathroom and picnic tables. The big bonus of this trail is after the hike you can have a glass of wine at Picchetti Winery. Scary coincident happened on this trail... I ran into Kake S. (http://kake.yelp.com/) when I was hiking here last Saturday, but we've never met in person yet! On the trail, she was coming from the other way and asked me how much longer the trail goes. Simply beautiful. Came up with a good friend for a hike recently on the Zinfandel trail and was just amazed at how peaceful and quiet this place is. It is truly a gem and surprisingly really not that far from town. The best part was we saw so few people throughout the entire hike, it almost felt as if we were there by ourselves. It is by no means a rigorous hike or anything like that, however, it is a place where you can go to truly appreciate nature and your surroundings. Walking along the trail provided me a chance to step away from life and just spend time reflecting and immersed in my own thoughts. That coupled with a thought provoking conversation made it a great afternoon. Best part of getting back to the start/end of the trail- Picchetti Winery where we were able to do a wine tasting and sample some delicious local wines. Our favorite was their homemade fudge coupled with a glass of port, yum! My ideal day at this place: After a relaxing hike, bring a blanket, some snacks, a couple of glasses, pick up some wine and have a nice picnic with someone who can truly live in the moment and enjoy :) read more

I came here with a small group of mom's with young children for a child-led hike and it was awesome! We took a simple hike out to the pond and my two girls were beside themselves with all the tiny streams and puddles that formed from the result of a week and a half of heavy rain. The pond was full and we saw newts, salamanders and even heard frogs. The road to get to the preserve was very curvy and it was tough for me hahaha. But it was well worth the trip! There are lots of poison oak if you go off the paths so stay on the path and you will be fine. And to the wine drinkers out there this is located conveniently next to a winery so enjoy your hike and have some wine after. =) read more

A nice and quiet stroll through the woods but I am not impressed with the surrounding. There was green everywhere which is always better than seeing brown grass at many other preserves but I wish the views would be a little more interesting during the hike. There was no peak or lookout points but that's just me being picky. We saw a few Bambi's up close and it was nice to know that you are truly within nature with these animals. Mountain lions are also present but that is an encounter I would like to avoid as I am such an easy and weak prey to target! Good thing my boyfriend went in case I needed to break his foot and throw him as bait. :o) If you are looking for a secluded and short hike, I would come here. The views aren't great but the sense of being isolated and not with any other people is also nice. read more

Beautiful nature. The walk is not bad; do-able for most everyone. I especially love the crisp, fresh air surrounded by green shrubs and cute small animals like the rabbits, squirrels, and deers... okay deers aren't "small" but cute enough. One of the walks has a pear tree, too. The Pichetti winery is available with wine tasting for the wine epicures. This review is for the hike. Compared to other south bay area hiking locations (rancho, villa montalvo, fremont older), this hike was not only very underwhelming, it had no good views and no excitement. At first, there is a nice picnic area by the winery, and is a good place to spend a weekend afternoon. The hike physically is not too bad, with no super steep trails. Within the first few minutes you pass a small marsh to the left (dried up in the summer). We took the Zinfandel Trail all the way to the end. The rest of the hike was decent and not too tiring, although there are a few ups and downs and narrow trails that bring you deep into the Cupertino preserve. Once you reached the 'top' you can make some people kayaking in the Stevens Creek reservoir. Then the trail takes you back down into a really small barbecue area on the other side. Really nothing to see here. That was pretty much it, and we had to hike all the way back to the Winery too where we parked our cars. I felt like I wasted my time here, as there were not much to see. read more

What a nice way to avoid the Rancho San Antonio crowds - I don't think I've ever seen more than two other cars parked here during the week. I've been here a few times to do the Zinfandel trail, connecting to the Creek trail in Stevens Creek County Park. It's about five miles round trip with a nice creekside picnic area at the turnaround point, including everything you could ask for (clean restrooms, water fountain, trash bins, etc). I have yet to see any water in the "pond" so am always amused by the No Swimming signs. And of course if you'd like to do a little wine tasting before or after your hike, you can step right up to the tasting room.... read more

Nice winery - rustic and full of character. Enjoyed our wine tasting. Love the nature trails nearby too. Great family outing. Kids can play on lawn, watch peacock, hunt lizards, while mom and dad enjoy a wine tasting (if your kids are old enough or you have a helper along). We'll be back! A small hiking area that that connects to Stevens Creek Preserve and perfect for a light stroll. The drive up can be a little windy so don't forget to buckle up. There's minimal crowds, even on the weekends, so you can absorb the nature around you. Picnic tables are located at the trailhead in case you want a snack after your hike and the trails are wide and welly maintained with a couple decent views but it's not a loop. I saw a couple rabbits, squirrels, and birds so overall, the air is clean but not a hiking area to go if you're trying to break a sweat. read more

Great hike on a Sunday morning, plenty of parking so that made for a relaxing start. Trail head is marked at the entrance of the winery. We took the Zinfandel trail down to creek trail, we tried to find a loop around but ended up on the road and didn't really want to walk back on the road so we decided to hike back the same way we came. There were warning signs of mountain lions but we did not see any...THANK GOD. But I did see some scat along the trail that looked suspicious. Next time I come back I believe I will bring some pepper spray and a walking stick just incase because it is a beautiful trail and would love to come again. We didn't stop in for wine after but we definitely plan on next time! I felt like this hike was perfect, I got a great workout in without being overly exerted and was able to still enjoy the rest of the day. I really liked how there was a lot of shaded spaces on the trail as well as some sun areas. Well maintained trails. read more
