We're an Italian family, and we came across Piciocchi's on our way back to Long Island from upstate New York last Saturday. From the moment we walked in, we felt at home. We met the owner, Stefano, and despite the restaurant being at its busiest peak, he couldn't have been more welcoming, kind, and attentive. Speaking Italian with him instantly brought us back to Italy. He embodies the warmth and hospitality we miss so much. The food was authentic, fresh, and clearly made with great attention to detail. We tried a little bit of everything on the menu, and every dish was outstanding. Honestly, it's hard to choose a favorite because everything was so good. Even our kids said they felt like they were back in Italy. They especially loved the pizza. I was visiting from Brooklyn to see my family in the area. My friend, who's a local, told me about a place that makes their own pasta and how they have a great lunch. Ok I'm in, I'm Italian, homemade pasta is right up my alley. We sat down, friendly staff (young and distant), but an extremely strange setting. It was like walking into a Wayfair showroom with a pasta kitchen. The branding was a bit horrid in my opinion, but I work in that industry, so I couldn't get over the esthetic before I even got to the food. The TV "paintings" with random art were the "highlight" truly... I'm being too kind. The wedding table numbers, really were killing me in the worst way. This place was like a mishmash of identities with no real clarity of execution or strategy on how to accomplish what they're trying to be. A crash landing of ideas with no real destination. Now the food and drink! The plates were the size of a small luggage! For starters, the "fresh" bread they offered with a rancid tasting olive oil and the tiniest drop of balsamic vinegar was appalling. The calamari was decent at best... it tasted factory made, the coating was thick and it came with the tiniest portions of sauce. I want my calamari, piping hot, with a really thin coating and a ton of sauce, that's just me. The chicken cutlet was a flavorless flour-dredged slab of meat. Barely pounded out and coated in a thin breading, with no seasoning, and it was crazy big! The Gnocchi four cheese was like eating dough turds in glue. The texture was not good at all, and reminded me of undercooked packaged pasta, and weirdly overcooked all the same time... like the water wasn't boiling and they added the pasta in while it was cold. Gnocchi should be pillowy soft and should literally fall apart in the mouth and the cheese sauce should not be like hair gel stuck to the food. It's Italian food, it's supposed to be herbaceous and well seasoned, this was food for non-Italians, who think they could like Italian food if it was just a little more bland and assimilated... without all the immigrant culture, ya know?! The best portion of the dish was the non-alcoholic drink, which is saying a lot. I genuinely hate to leave a terrible impression, but I really hated this meal, and I'm shocked by the reviews. Picciocchi's is a wonderful addition to downtown. My family has enjoyed their previous location, and when I moved here in the summer I was excited to see what they had to offer. I have been here three times now, each experience better than the last, which is hard to beat. Very good food, great service, a solid selection of cocktails and nonalcoholic offerings. I have had the ravioli in the signature walnut cream sauce.. delicious, rich. I've also enjoyed seafood, steak, and a bit of my husband's gluten free pasta, which was fabulous as well. The ambiance is very nice, I love that they have a space for coats, and sometimes live music. It can get a bit loud in there, not a lot of material to absorb the sound, but to me this is not a big deal as I am often engaged in conversation anyway, just a little detail to add. Definitely have a reservation. I made the mistake of thinking it wasn't needed on a today evening, but oh was I wrong. We got a high top at the bar which was way too small for dinner for 2, but all we could get within a reasonable amount to ti me (1hr wait). Drinks came out quick and wait staff rotated by often. Free bread with olive oil was a great start. Calamari to begin - crispy on the outside, 2 sauces to dip into. Large portion (no pic). Carbonara - rich, creamy and cheesy. We had an excellent lunch here yesterday. Arrived after the lunch rush and was warmly greeted by Stefano.i had the gnocchi with rose blush sauce and eggplant rollatini. It was unbelievably good. The gnocchi was light, the sauce was perfect and the eggplant was flavorful and cooked just right. My friend had the fettuccine with pesto and chicken parm which she raved about as well. Probably the best value for lunch in Scranton, ($15!!) and in a beautiful setting. Cannot wait to return. read more

With Picciocchi's Pasta, downtown Scranton officially has a food scene where you can visit a rotation of solid restaurants without having to cringe and explain away all the deficiencies. The pasta at Picciocchi's is phenomenal. It's better than some places I frequent in NYC. Everything is there: ingredients, preparation, execution, and the portions are large enough to split. The main takeaway is that you could have spent your life dining at "great Italian" restaurants in NEPA, not ever realizing that this level of cooking was possible. Everyone who was sitting near us had the same reaction. It's like eating Italian food for the first time. I admire that the restaurant doesn't take itself too seriously, and offers customizable options for the inevitable customers who will try to strip down all of these fantastic dishes. The only knock here is that the dining room is very plain and almost slapped together. Better than kitschy decorations and walls that haven't been dusted in 50 years, but it feels like they just entered the space. Music was weird and too loud, A/C was too cold. If there is only 1 restaurant you can check out in Scranton, please let it be Picciocchi's!! By far the best Italian restaurant in the city and it was lovely dining at their new location in downtown last night. Their new, upscale location is separated into 2 areas - lunch and dinner. Their dinner area is spacious and great for large groups but I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. Every dish my table ordered was delicious and was exactly what I was looking for. The calamari was tender and the sauces paired great. My vongole with spaghetti tasted fresh and my party also enjoyed the lobster ravioli, cacio e pepe, and spinach and cheese ravioli with bolognese sauce. Our server was very helpful with any questions on which pastas to pair with which sauce. We were stuffed after dinner so we opted for a light vanilla bean gelato and it was the perfect ending to our meal. We can't wait to enjoy countless more dinners here and to try the whole menu! read more

General rule I've found to be true is you can judge a restaurant by the quality of the ice they use for their old fashioned this once again proved true with the cloudy air bubbles ice and the whole orange slice in the OF. The pasta itself is good. The sauces left much to be desired the red sauces are generally not good. The mushroom sauce tasted like milk. Definitely a one and done place. read more

While the food was good, do not sit in a high top in the bar area - crazy traffic going by and a terrible draft from the front door even at the last table near the dining room. Service - servers rushing to take orders and impatient. I was scared to talk to them. 3. Food - not as expected, caso de pepe was dry and noodles was too thick. Pizza was okay! 4. Chaotic - We were not asked how our food was? But all our neighbors were asked by servers. We were not asked for cheese on pizza/pasta, but our neighbors were asked. I walked In the front door and was transported from downtown Scranton to what I can only describe as what I would dream a fancy pasta restaurant would look like in New York City, only with much more space. The large window where you could watch the pasta being made elevates the decor and reassured me of just how fresh the ingredients would be. The Vespa Viola was a perfect fresh gin cocktail that really highlighted the herbal gin notes with cut of limoncello and sweetened by the blackberry in a way that fit perfectly with the calamari which was cooked to delicate perfection. The pansoti con salsa di nocci had such a subtle flavor that sat so nicely in the tortellini and really brought out the spinach flavor. I was ready to leave after such a filling meal but was talked into trying a dessert and was not disappointed. The monterosa was so light and fluffy with a powerful punch from the strawberry. The limoncello I enjoyed with it was the perfect match and rounded out such a pleasant experience over all. Disappointed with Service Despite Great Past Experiences I was very excited to dine here again, having enjoyed their food when they were located in the small strip mall near Gerrity's. Unfortunately, my lunch visit last week was a major disappointment. It wasn't crowded, but the outdoor music was so loud I could barely speak to my friend. Our drinks came quickly, but after waiting 50 minutes for our food, I went inside to check. The staff told me they were "just waiting on my pizza." I hadn't ordered pizza--I'd ordered a chicken cutlet hoagie. They handed me a chicken Parmesan hoagie to-go with no apology, no explanation, and very little interaction. The service felt dismissive and inattentive. While I may give it another try since so many people speak highly of this place, my experience was extremely poor this time. read more

I had been to their old location before, but only at lunchtime for their specials, which I thought were very reasonable. I was surprised by the much higher dinner prices, but the restaurant is very nice looking and there was plenty of staff around to help. The owners were very present and friendly. Our water glasses were empty for a while, but I'm sure if we had made a comment, they would have taken care of it immediately. We were there on a very busy evening, but we never felt rushed and it seemed like we could sit there all night and they would have been fine with that. We were really looking forward to eating here. What went wrong: the table we were seated at was in the isle next to a wine cooler that was accessed frequently. Water glass had a huge chip on the edge that I caught while my server was filling it. Food came out very quick, maybe too quick- no big deal. My pasta was cooked very well but the dish was very heavy, the pasta was almost glued together with the sauce. My husband's shrimp were like erasers, super over cooked. I know they are trying to be fancy with the 3 tiny tiny drops of butter around the plate for the bread was just silly. As far as the service, it started off well then our server disappeared. Turns out she was sent on a wine run and we saw her come back in with her arms loaded with wine bottles. The silverware was mismatched (pet peeve) but the fork my husband has was rounded which made it impossible to twist the pasta onto it. He also wanted a refill on his soda and even placed his glass on the edge of the table and nothing. The other servers were taking very good care of their tables but ours was gone. There was a very tall man all in chef black walking around checking on other tables to see if they were good and offering those with entrées Parmesan cheese once again except for us. (even the one right next to us) and he never even looked our way. The drink I had was made just right, so cheers to the bar. Felt bad for our server, shame on management. We went there 3 weeks ago and it was amazing and then we were there last weekend and was just ok. My wife had the same dish both times,, amaracitiana. The first time was absolutely delicious, rivaled the same dish we had in Italy, but this time it wasn't good at all. We couldn't believe it was the same dish. She didn't even eat the meal. The service was also poor this time. She never came back to ask if we wanted another drink or water. She served the meal and disappeared. She never even asked how our meal was . The bartender had no idea how to make an old fashioned which was very disappointing. The bartenders were pumping out the drinks, but not the quality you would expect at a restaurant like this. I was hoping the owner stopped by like he did last time to ask how everything was, but he never did. I wanted to share my thoughts with him directly because as a business owner myself, I always appreciate feedback that could be helpful. We brought friends with us expecting our first experience. They too left uninspired for pretty much the same reasons. One last thing, turning the lights out frequently for birthdays became annoying after awhile. Hopefully this review will be noticed by the owners so they could remedy these shortcomings. Made reservations for 7:30. We were not seated until after 8:00, reservations are not honored, it is more a first come first serve. Our seats were located in the worst spot for dinner, it seemed the table was added in to make more seating, it was small with chairs that didn't match the nicer chairs at the other tables. We were almost in the hallway of the waiters area where they put together silverware and place the orders- high traffic and very loud. It was also very cold inside, made worse by the constant wind created from the servers going in and out of the hallway area. My seat was almost on top of the table behind us. Very uncomfortable. Service was not attentive, took a long time to get a glass of wine. The food was pretty good, but over all not an enjoyable experience specifically due to the table location, and the long wait despite making a reservation. read more
