First the good: the food is amazing! Handmade pastas are out of this world. Entrees top notch. Desserts are on point. That olive cake is to die for. The bad: this point has to do with their automatic gratuity system. Nothing to do with the kitchen. I am not sure if anything over a party of 4 gets automatic tip, but it falls apart here: the bottle list. We ordered a bottle of wine. $115. Total cost with tax and gratuity is $143. That's $27 over the cost of the actual bottle. Or a 20% tip roughly. And they probably calculated the tip post tax. Had I known that I would not have ordered a bottle. Now for the arguments of "serving a bottle involves some labor that should be compensated ". Let's do the math. The cheapest bottle they have is 60$. If you were to charge gratuity and tax on this bottle it would be $76.20. That's only $16.30. Not a bad price right? Given the service of opening said bottle and pouring it. BUT... The most expensive bottle they have is $360. If you order that bottle, you will be paying an extra $97.20. That is a huge markup. And if I'm missing something, tell me how the service on a $360 bottle is different than the service on a $60 bottle. Does the server come out with a little song and dance for the more expensive one justifying an additional $97.20 on a $360 bottle of wine? Do you realize how absurd this is? My guess is that the owners don't realize the point I'm trying to make- to give them the benefit of the doubt. That is the best situation. The worst is if the owners know this, and are fleecing the customers. I'd like to believe this is not the case. To sum up: go for the food. Order wine by the glass. DO NOT order bottle service. You will be in for a nasty surprise. The average markup for A bottle of wine is 3x the amount in a restaurant. Retail my bottle was $45. I know this. And if it's $115, that's fair. After all the restaurant makes more money on liquor sales than food. I'm okay with that. But what I find reprehensible is that they charge a service fee on top of that. Which by my calculation is 20%. Therein lies the fallacy. The same 20% charge is applied to the cheapest to most expensive bottle. The effort made to open and serve said bottles are exactly the same! They don't disclose this practice to the patrons. I've run this by multiple people I know. They all say this practice is shady as hell. Enough said, go for the food. Don't get a bottle of wine. read more

Been trying to get a reservation here every time I visit the area and was finally able to get one that matched my schedule. Service from Jessica and the rest of the staff was excellent. We were seated outside in 10f degree weather but it was still very warm and toasty. I enjoyed the Grilled Spanish octopus and pinwheel lasagna. We also got the Focaccia set and the heirloom carrots and they were very good too, although, the sauce of the carrots and grilled octopus seemed too similar, almost identical. I absolutely adored this place and fell in love with every single dish. I 100% recommend the chefs counter, which is a set course meal carefully crafted with so much creativity. The flavors were delicious. My favorites were the tuna, pasta and dessert. I'm visiting from LA, California and I have to say the food is leagues better than the restaurants I've tried so far back at home. It truly was an adventure for my palate! What's unique about this dinner is that it's very interactive. At first the headphones and the blindfold threw me off, but it really made the experience quite immersive and memorable. I fished for my food too with a fishing rod. How cute! I wish they would open a restaurant in LA. It would be an absolute hit! Staff were amazing and welcoming. Started with Pumpkin martini. Don't know how they did it, but it wasn't a dessert martini. It had hazelnut nuts on the rim and was the most delicious drink I've had. My husband had a margarita with tahini salt and pepper flakes. It was gone before the appetizer. Which leads me to the appetizer! I had Kristens focaccia . All restaurants are into honey these days. Not a big honey fan but this was the best I've tasted. It had Parmesan butter with black pepper and balsamic vinaigrette. Together it exploded flavors in my mouth. The complimentary plate they gave was beans with vinaigrette, peppers with small balls of mozzarella. The beans were heavenly. I had the pinwheel lasagna. Huge portion. It was amazing although it had a bit of fresh basil which was not something I was crazed about but it didn't damper the plate. My husband had pork belly. It was caramelized, crunchy and melted in mouth. Brussel sprouts with apricots were fantastic. I can't stop giving compliments again it was delicious. Dessert was good. He has the honey gelato with honeycomb crumbs on top. Not over powering. Perfect size. Ok, maybe more!! I had milk chocolate budino. It had butterscotch in it. It was perfect. Nice cold chocolate with a smooth taste. The restaurant itself is in a section with newer businesses. A complex. Parking was difficult because I believe there was a wedding next building over. Finally made it to The Refinery last night and it was all it was cracked up to be! The setting was nice, the staff amazing, the food...absolutely wonderful! My husband met Chef Chad and he was so personable and nice! The Manager, Liz, was literally the best! But our waitress, Jessica may have been the best waitress we have ever encountered! They have no availability on open table for months --I only looked out through July (in February),& nothing. Can't get in touch with anyone easily. Would love to go back, but doesn't make sense for us to try to plan dinners months in advance, & it's too far for us to just stop in, so mostly likely won't go back. So there are aspects of our visit that are 5 star and others that are 4 star. 5 stars Ambience/Vibe- this place is super cool inside and has excellent energy. You might think you're in SOHO or Brooklyn and you're in Pittston, Pa. Staff- Every person, from the time you walk in, is polite and attentive. They set a very high bar for other restaurants in the area. Food presentation is top notch. This dessert is a show stopper. Milk chocolate Budino. It doesn't sound or look like anything special but DAMN it's good. 4 stars the service from the kitchen was quite slow drink service was painfully slow and we were just ordering wines by the glass. The food, while beautifully presented, does not quite live up to how it looks on the plate. It's good, no question, just not 5 stars. And it's also quite pricey. That being said, it was our first visit. I'd have to go back a few times and try more things to give a full review of the food. Just to wrap up, this spot has a lot going for it. Would be great for any special occasion. Or perhaps drinks and appetizers at the bar on a more regular basis. 4.5 stars overall. read more

After reading and seeing reviews I noticedanybre views from out of the area. I don't know of there is a trick on Open table to look but right now they are 2 to 3 months out. I really feel they should realize where they are and be available to the locals who will be supporti g them for years to come hopefully. It's not a large space so I do understand it filling up fast. But the bar should ALWAYS have a few seats available for walk ins. It's pittston not Philly or NYC. With that said it's good food served and presented well. Incredible! 10/10 on all fronts. Made our reservation back in July but it was SO WORTH the wait! We went on a Saturday night were seated immediately when we arrived. I did notice that they offered champagne for those waiting longer for their table. Place inside was so neat, did not feel like you were in pittston LOL. So we really were excited to try this place. We didn't have reservations but they sat us at the bar. (hostess was a little snarky) Food was good not great then the unthinkable. The bartender licked his fingers and stuck it in the bottom of the glass before making my drink in it. He placed the drink in front of me and I said I would not drink that. He was perplexed but when I told him I saw him he did admit it. He apologized so I was ready to chalk it up to a dumb mistake. Well he grabs another glass and grabs a large ice cube with the same hand he licked. I again said Im not drinking that please give me my check. Im assuming he told the manager cause she came over. She said I'll take that drink off as if doing me a favor and proceeded to give me my check. Im afraid to imagine how the kitchen prepares food if this is how there trained in front of people! So the food is great. The service hit or miss. Hubby had an expensive scotch rocks, when they circled for a refill the bartender just dumped it in the warm ice melted glass. Front end seems confused and not too friendly. Poached us from the bar early told us to cash out for our table weirdly stood there while we waited for the bartender to notice. Took us to table we had reserved for 2 people it was a table for 8. Left us standing there for an uncomfortable time while they confirmed the reservation was indeed for two then told us to wait by the bar. Hmm thanks. We held our daughter's wedding at our home for 200 people on September 6 and we were lucky enough to be able to work with the dynamic staff of the Refinery. Our family owned The Epicurean Delight Catering Co. for 40 years and have catered well over 5,000 weddings in that time, so when I say they exceeded expectations, I speak from experience!! The main team, Chef Chad, his wife and pastry chef, Chef Kristen, and team detail leader, Bettyjo were just so incredible to deal with. Everyone was smart, confident and super organized. They came to our home to go over all the details and work on the perfect menu for us. Chef suggesting some imaginative and seasonal items which worked out perfectly. The food was presented beautifully, tasted amazing and was abundant. The desserts by Chef Kristen were equally out of this world. Portions were soooo small for what you pay. First off they did give a complimentary plate of olives and beans because dinner does not include any soup or salad starter, but no one in my party eats olives or beans so they wound up taking it away. I had the chicken dish and it was the smallest piece of chicken about the size of 1 small chicken thigh, one small teaspoon of kale and two mushrooms. The outside of the chicken was crispy but it was tough and couldn't even chew it. Bland and no seasoning to the dish. Also there wasn't even salt and pepper on the tables if I wanted to add more seasoning. Other person in my party at the short rib and same thing portion was so tiny, it was tough and overcooked and barely any flavor. Our table of 4 people thoroughly enjoyed well prepared, expertly cooked and aesthetically presented food, which included pinwheel, raviolis, halibut, a veal chop, and short ribs of beef. My halibut had a nice sear and the sauce was superb. We enjoyed our appetizers, too. It's nice to have a freshly prepared artichoke. Everywhere else I've been in NEPA where artichokes were on the menu I was served either frozen, canned or jarred artichokes instead of the far superior garden fresh vegetable. Kudos to the Refinery! Where to even begin? Between the hospitality at the front to check in for your reservation where we were offered champagne for our table not being ready (which was then ready in less than 10 minutes). We were seated and had the menu highlighted for us with some favs of the server which is a huge plus in my book. The drinks were crisp and delicious. The food was out of this world. We started with a variety of hot and cold apps. Kristen's Focaccia is the #1 favorite for a reason. It makes you feel like you're home. My favorite entree being the Veal Osso Buco Ravioli which is not something I usually go for but was highly recommended. My biggest recommendation--SAVE ROOM FOR DESERT. You will not be let down on anything you choose. Everything is fresh in house and it shows. You truly don't feel like you're in downtown Pittston but a restaurant in a city.
