They're either pink for practice or yellow for games. And they aren't made of rubber, they are plastic polymer whose chief characteristic is that it doesn't bounce very high. If you drop it from over your head, it will barely bounce to knee level. Learning (and remembering that fact about low bounces) is just one of the many things you'll need to master if you want to take up the sport. Pickleball was launched in the mid-1960s and is played on a smallish court with a modified tennis net, using a paddle and those perforated polymer balls. I'd best describe the game as the love child of tennis, ping pong and badminton. When you hit the ball, it sounds more like a thud than a ping! Similar to tennis, your goal is to hit the ball over the net and into your opponent's side while adhering to a myriad of rules about serving and counting bounces and staying away from a zone in front of the net that reminded me of the goalie's cease in hockey. Dill Dinkers has 20 locations across ten states. There is just one Connecticut location. Yesterday, we took our very first pickleball lesson at Dill Dinkers in Simsbury, in a space previously occupied by Borders Books. We joined a beginner's class with about 20 rookies and interacted with three exceptional and very patient coaches who gave us lesson time, practice drills and embryonic game play with instant feedback on performance and the rules (which I consistently violated). For the third year in a row, Pickleball is the country's fastest growing sport, and their courts are taking over empty shopping mall space across the country. After one lesson, I am looking forward to charting my "progress" over the next three weeks. I'm not very optimistic about that!

The courts have a great aesthetic and have really good quality surfaces. My favorite part is how much space there is between the baselines and the fences. Not once did I have to worry about hitting the barriers, and that allowed me to play much more freely. We encountered a technical difficulty during a tournament that caused us to play an opponent out of order, slightly messing things up which was a little frustrating in the moment. But the tournament organizer did a great job resolving it, and went above and beyond to offer some compensation in the form of free court time and some waived fees which is a huge testament to their customer service. I really appreciated that gesture. Will definitely be back here!

It was big enough for the girls to practice on one side and the boys in the other. It had turf on the field. The perimeter had a waiting area (like an ice rink) with some seating and tables and one wickedly cool rocking chair that was repurposed from old barrels. Also there was a guy there with a relacing machine for the lacrosse sticks. Not sure if that's permanently there. So glad that the kids have somewhere to play/practice w/o getting wet and muddy in bad weather.

The playground had swings, a sandbox, and a playscape. There is a large pond and a short boardwalk that goes through a nature preserve. There is a short paved trail in the middle of the park. There were many picnic tables and benches throughout. I'm betting this is a great spot to go sledding during the winter since there are many hills there. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves today. We walked the park's paths that meander through its 28 acres and connect so many great entertainment and athletic options. We saw an amphitheater, six clay tennis courts, a lighted little league field, a soccer field, a Children's Forest, a huge playground, pickleball courts, a splash pad, a nice pond, hiking trails, pretty scenery, and a long boardwalk over wetlands. That's a ton of things for your enjoyment. I really didn't expect this park to be as awesome as it was, but I was thrilled to have underestimated it.

She recommended going online and booking a "Quick Start 2.0" lesson with one of the instructors they had. I created profiles for my wife and I on their website and booked the lesson. Another couple at our same level was added to make a 4some. We met with our instructor Scotty for the 2 hour lesson and he was AWESOME. We spent about an hour discussing the rules, scoring and running through a bunch of drills that taught us to say the score, serve, volley, where to stand, etc. He simplified everything and and we were ready for some game play. The 2nd hour we spent playing actual games and rotating partners. We could get in about 3 games going to 11 points along with instruction. I highly recommend a lesson. We paid $60 each, but learned so much. I also watched a video on YouTube explaining the scoring prior to my lesson, so it made it easier to understand. The place is busy, but the reservations make it well organized. We have since rented our own court and brought our kids to play. Court was $50 and paddles were $5 each for those that didn't have them.
