I recently had to take my dog in to be seen and overall the care he and I received was good. I felt most of the staff we dealt with was friendly and compassionate. While there was quite a wait to be seen, that is to be expected when going to an urgent veterinary hospital. The doctor we saw took the time to talk to me after he was evaluated. I didn't feel rushed and was able to ask questions and feel confident in his diagnosis and treatment plan. They didn't perform unnecessary testing just to raise the price of the bill, which is what has happened to us at other facilities. The technician, Shelby, that took my dog's vitals and preliminary information upon arrival was great. She was friendly, personable and understanding. The first impression is always what sticks with you and gives you an idea of what to expect from the facility. After having a negative first experience at two other facilities, Shelby was a breath of fresh air and gave me peace of mind coming to this facility. read more

Very efficient, informative, thoughtful, and patient. This was our first interaction with Piper, but I am very happy that I was placed in the care of Dr. U. Anyone entering the ER would be lucky enough to have her treat their pet. She was confident, knowledgeable, candid, empathetic and helpful. Understanding how valuable Dr. U's time was, I appreciated her patience, and that she allowed me to not only record the phone conversation that we were having (knowing that I wasn't going to remember anything that came next and would want to rehear the words being spoken), but also that she let me three-way the conversation to include my mom who is a detrimental part in my pet's life. Poor Charlotte (10 yo Golden Retriever) was diagnosed with an aggressive case of Hemangiosarcoma. Everything from the minute we walked in the door. We have had dogs for over 50 years, during this time we have been to many different Veterinarians in 5 or more states. To be able to go to one place and have a Dr for any malady that your pet might have is exceptional. Orthopedics, cardiology, kidneys, urology, various diseases, MRI and X-rays, vision and hearing problems, it's all here under one roof. We had a Neurologist that was terrific, one of the many people we met there. We traveled from our home in VT 200 miles to go there and we would definitely go back. I brought my cat in to Pieper Memorial Veterinary Hospital at 3 am on 3/4/26 for suspected poison ingestion. The staff were polite and friendly. They brought her in for examination, performed bloodwork, and had the veterinarian meet with me to discuss recommended course of action, which was to keep my cat in the hospital for most of the next 72 hours to flush out and monitor kidney function. I consented to this and left the cat at Pieper Memorial to prevent any deterioration in her condition. I received regular updates on 3/4 and 3/5 on my cat's condition from Morgan, the care coordinator. Since my cat's condition was stable, she was discharged at 5:30pm on 3/5/26, with a recommendation to get bloodwork done on 3/6/26 with my primary care veterinarian. The earlier discharge brought the initial cost estimate down by almost $600. My primary complaint is that my cat's record was apparently mixed up with that of another pet patient with the same name. Birth date and weight were also not corrected reported. This made the checkout process more onerous than it should have been. Overall, I would recommend Pieper Memorial for those pet parents who are facing an emergency and require prompt medical attention for their pets. read more

I brought my cat to the ER because he refused to eat or drink for 3+ days. They checked me in almost as soon as I got there & determined that my cat didn't need immediate help. So I waited for 5 hours. The heavy snow storm was on its way so I was trying to get out before it started. I went up and asked the cashier if she could tell me how long before I was seen. She said I was next up. 45 minutes later they call two other people who I was in front of technically because they came hours after me. While I understand that other people have different emergencies but why lie and say I was next? Their dogs were just up & around barking as if nothing was wrong ( I know that's not the reality ) but they took them first over me and my cat was hunched up in a corner of his carrier, waiting to be seen & boarding on dehydration. I just felt as if they weren't taking me seriously as multiple people who got there after me were seen first with no real visible emergencies, injuries or discomforts. I ended up walking out because I couldn't stand freezing in the waiting room they have. Then 45 minutes later they tried to call me & ask if I was still around. Absolutely not. You guys aren't about to having me waiting through a shift change and freezing temperatures to charge me however much hundreds or thousands of dollars. We were better off just staying home & trying home remedies. Even the lady who sat next to me was there 12+ hours just for an ultrasound. They even told her, they don't see cats unless they are dying. Believe the bad reviews about this place & avoid it all costs. This was the worst emergency vet hospital visit I've ever experienced. The woman at the front desk was rude and unprofessional. The wait was approximately 4 hours in total. When we were finally seen and given the diagnosis, It was another hour and a half before we received his medication and we left without our discharge paperwork. Why would it take an hour and a half to be provided with medication after being seen by the vet and given no discharge paperwork? I had to call this morning to have it emailed to me and confirm it was being sent to our primary care vet. They have my email address so this was intentional or negligent. Either way, the level of unprofessionalism was stark. I will drive the extra miles to go to elsewhere. I thank God my pet wasn't in a more dire situation! read more

We took our cat in for oncology services. She didn't make it, and we knew she probably wouldn't, the oncology Dr understood and helped us with a difficult decision, and guided us thru all the possible options, in a situation we didn't have any experience with. The staff explained all the tests before hand, so we knew what to plan for. The oncology staff were wonderful, very kind. Getting to the oncology staff was another story, the front desk people were awful, made us feel like we were in their way, a problem and didn't acknowledge us at all. When we asked questions they barely looked at us. This was over multiple visits and front desk staff were consistently unkind, unhelpful. read more

Sarah Byron, a doctor at the hospital, was very cold and lacked any kind of compassion or empathy during a difficult time when we had to euthanize our dog, unfortunately. Understanding that when you are working with the animals, you are also working with the owners and the dogs' families. I will respect Dr. Byron's title; however, the lack of communication and social skills is concerning. When we asked for their name, and we accidentally said the wrong name, "Sue", Dr. Byron responded rudely and sarcastically, "Sure." However, I remember their name and respected their pronouns because I noticed they wore a "they/them" pin. I don't want to believe this was discrimination due to race, as Dr. Byron is a part of a marginalized community as well, maybe they had a rough day/evening. However, the lack of patience, empathy, and compassion during this time was heartbreaking. I would like to say a big thank you to Ashley, one of the nurses, the admin staff, and another doctor that we worked with during this time. Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center does better with empathy and compassion for the families you work with, as, yes, the services are for the animals. Last night at 6 p.m., I took my dog to the Pieper Hospital Emergency clinic. At 1:00 a.m., I still had not seen a doctor. In my 7 hours awaiting an emergency vet, a dog expired in the waiting room. Another, a boston terrier, was bleeding out from the rectum. His father had been waiting for 2 hours and advised the receptionist his dog was dying.... she disappeared for 10 minutes... the gentleman scooped up his dog and took his dog to another emergency vet in Hartford. There is something seriously wrong at this emergency clinic. Please seek a plan "B" if your dog is in distress. I will not be returning to this clinic. My name is David Paul Pollan. The surgeons at Pieper saved our dogs life in the middle of the night from a sudden case of GDV. They took him in as a transfer from West Hartford and quickly put me and my family at ease. My dog has lockjaw. The service by both the Vet and the Vet Tech was terrible. They did not follow the course of action for the autoimmune disease called MMM. Instead the Vet wanted to place our dog under sedation and try to open his mouth, she was unsuccessful and shared that she suspected MMM. When asked if she did a blood test that can diagnose this condition, she said no and also did not prescribe Prednisone a med that is used to treat MMM. Hence her deviation from what should have been done may have caused our dog to go from acute to chronic disease. Have had two consultations with vets, one today with a Neurologist who placed our dog on Prednisone, both said a blood test should have been done and the dog placed on Prednisone immediately. read more

Excellent. Gwen is highly reactive and we've had a hard time at other offices with her. The staff was supportive and made our visit productive and fairly low stress. I wish I took their names. But, Dr. March and the staff who assisted him with Gwen's appointment were outstanding. They made her visit look like a breeze. My friend is low-income and has difficulty paying for treatments. I recently learned Pieper Olson has a grant foundation to help alleviate the cost. My friend has even asked for support from the hospital and has not even gotten support on this. The vet even told my friend she has no control over what gets charged even though this vet knows my friend is low-income. The hospital has a responsibility to help people and their pets. I feel like they are failing my friend who is like my family and her pet. I'm reading through some of the reviews here on Yelp and rather disgusted with the lack of care towards others who visit the hospital. I feel like they care about more about money than the pets care. By far the worst experience with a veterinary hospital. We brought my cat in for swelling to be told she more than likely has cancer! Not even 3 hours after demanding antibiotics and steroids the swelling has subsided. They made a suggestive diagnosis with no tests, and no scans. There were 3 options i was told 1.) Antibiotics & Steroids, 2.) spend $4,000 to $6,000 on scans and testing, 3.) Euthanasia of my cat. Euthanasia was in couraged by the doctor as he said that he has seen cases like this and it's usually cancer. So I was supposed to put my cat down because of a thought? Do you put down your significant other because they have swelling? After going through the options the so called doctor(who I'm unsure if even is a doctor) said he would not explain it to me again! The Doctor introduced himself as Doc Chris, and when I called back to speak with him there was no Doctor Chris on the Payroll. Then after being discharged there was a guy named Chris without a DVM after his name so was he really a doctor who knows. I will never subject my animals to this place ever again! if I go anywhere it will be to OceanState in East Greenwich, RI. Anyone who has been here or plans to go here I'm ver sorry for you! Do Not Put Your Pet Down, because of a suggestion and not a factual diagnosis. My cat has been out of there for 12 hours, and looks 100x better. I'm happy I didn't listen to someone like that, and have my cat put down. After going back and forth some how the or quote went from $4,000-$6000 to $5,000-$7000. I brought my 11mos F German Shepherd to Pieper yesterday after she suddenly lost her vision. She's had 3+ weeks of medical issues that I never could have prepared for (emotionally or otherwise). But as unfortunate as it is that she now has records at 5 different hospitals (due to needing specialty procedures/diagnostics that not every hospital can provide), I am so grateful for the care she's been shown at each -- and Pieper in Middletown is no exception. Sam checked me in and was so reassuring in his tone, as my hand was shaking holding my phone to my ear. Hannah took a thorough history (and braved Gentry's excited/anxious jumping up on her without making me feel embarrassed ). Dr. Urbonas was wonderful in handling Gentry's care from start to finish -- including a call before her discharge where not only did she help me decide on next steps, but then also asked if I was okay. I was not okay, but her asking me that made me feel so much less alone in this... and a little closer to "okay". Dr. Olson explained what he learned in examining Gentry and delivered some unfortunate findings, but did so while giving me ample time to ask questions. He explained things comprehensibly and also made recommendations for how to proceed. Everyone was wonderful. Thank you, so very much. P.S. The building is beautiful and the location feels serene somehow -- not clinical. It helped both my partner and I when we came to pick up our blind puppy who should have had many days of goofing around ahead of her but may unfortunately have a very permanent change of lifestyle ahead of her. If I can give zero stars, I would please if you have an emergency and you love your pet DO NOT BRING THEM HERE!!!!!! A month ago I brought my 3YR OLD cat here who had an emergency I explained she was lethargic, vomiting, diarrhea all of a sudden and mucus coming out here rear and salvia, they told me someone would be with me ten min. time passed and I started to get anxious no one still, I go to the desk and ask someone coming she looks like she going almost crying. They did not care at all!! hours later someone comes takes me to a room take her vitals where they state it was normal when clearly she was not and she had a fever. They take her to the back and here i'm thinking she is going to be ok she is getting the care she needs, after 5 hours I get to speak with the only vet they had that day short staffed and unexperienced workers. Dr overcast presumes to tell me that they almost lost her that she was turning cold when they went to check on her because they had other animals to attend to with more critical condition!! MY CAT DIED!!! she didn't make it, my best friend is gone!!!! he tells me there's a 50/50 chance bill now is estimated at $6000 they now trying to administer IV fluids plasma get he glucose up from prolong waiting, hours pass and they said her condition was the same but now he comes up with what may need to be done to get her better I say do all you can, and I ask to see her because they tell me she has to stay overnight he declines me to see her excuse she has a catheter on, I can't see her and I would never after that. The next day they call me still same status they keep with treatment made sure to collect all my money before doing anything now we are close to 20k if she makes it past surgery now she needs surgery and now she's given 15 percent survival rate. They get her levels ok for surgery not 100 percent, she goes under and they call me to tell me the surgeon doesn't feel comfortable with the surgery and her intestines are inflamed time to euthanize her and to make a decision right away. 12k down to put her down, they ran all these test they claim and no answer no clue of to what was the cause opened her up and nothing, to tell me she be ready in an hour dead to see her. TOP it off they tell me I have 30 days to do the cremation on day 3 they sent her to get cremated and DID NOT CALL ME INFOM ME, WHEN MY SON AND I SAID IT NUMEROUS TIMES WE WANT TO BE PRESENT!!! TWICE they failed me to let me say goodbye to my best friend twice and they did not care. I went to pick up her ashes which they got back a week already and did not call me to inform me again!!!! NEGLECT NEGLECT NEGLECT !!!!! I believe she could have been saved if they acted accordingly and if they had to many patient let me go elsewhere to have given her a chance. over a month later I still do not have copies of what they did leading to 12k. I seriously can not say enough good things about Dr Hammond in the neurology department! My dog Delilah has been in his care now for several years. She started having strange symptoms and was in and out of her previous vet and a different emergency hospital, before we were finally referred to Dr Hammond here. By this time, I was distraught and wasn't sure if she was going to make it. Dr Hammond was the only vet who could figure out what was going on with her at the time, and finally get her symptoms under control. He is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but he is SO kind! You can tell he really cares about the pets, and their owners, and that it's not just all about the money. Don't get me wrong, I had to spend a fortune on her initially... veterinary medicine is expensive... but Dr Hammond didn't price-gouge me with unnecessary things or always make me come in to pay for another exam when it wasn't necessary. He always made sure to return calls when she first got sick and was so on-top of her care (often times it was later in the evening - even after I'm sure he had worked a long day). Again, I just can't say enough good things about Dr Hammond and they care we have received here at Pieper. I am beyond grateful we were sent to him! read more

Golden Story Part 2: Long version: Firstly, my significant other and I are both active duty submariners so we understand people are human, they're not robots, you're not going to have strictly work talk 100% of the time, we understand working those hours sometimes things are done in a more lenient way but still done. Secondly, I am not one for leaving reviews. But I feel whether it was the human factor, unprofessionalism, or lack of knowledge of the staff, one of those is the reason why my dog was misdiagnosed by the same doctor and tech 2 times in a 24 hour period and could of, worse case scenario, died if we continued to go with their advice plus no matter what, it would of cost us probably thousands more than we had already paid to treat our dog. With that being said, we have tried to bring it to the attention of the hospital management that there's a breakdown somewhere and it needs to be addressed so this doesn't happen to other patients. While yes both sides were clearly frustrated in the phone call with the manager I still expect the manager in this situation to do her duties which I have not seen any evidence of except a quick email to me from the manager that I insisted on having stating we had a phone conversation where she said she was reporting our case to the medical director. As of right now, I have no evidence of my case actually being looked at by anyone and I doubt the staff issues were addressed due to the manager herself has not done multiple things she said she was going to do like annotate that day in my dogs record the report she was sending to the medical director or send me the "email she was sending to the medical director that way if there was anything I wanted to add I could" (her words. Also, at the end of the phone call with her when I asked when I would receive the email of the report she's sending to the director she said to me, "well I don't feel like I should have to send that to you anymore." And I reminded her that she's the one who offered that to me. She was quiet for a moment and then short spoken with me anytime she spoke after that) Now I am worried the staff will continue to manage themselves in a way that it could be some else's pet that could be improperly taken care of. Our cat went in for an exam due to an overall lameness so we requested a full workup. The doctor listened to our concerns and later called to let us know the results. Test results returned very quickly. We came in the next day for a follow-up and were greeted with smiles and compassion. The prices are reasonable as well. No paperwork on intake, they did wait for over 6 hours. Charged her 219.88$. No IV, no blood work, nothing! Less than 12 hours later, her cat had to be rushed to a Vet in RI, and within 15 minuets, told he had a Urine blockage, and it was an EMERGENCY. I am giving 2 stars VS. 1 because when my dog had surgery in 2018 the surgeon did a very good job and when our family dog had to be euthanized by Dr Williams March 2018 they did a very good job and where kind and compassionate. It was a peaceful death . Other than that they need a complete overhaul or some serious training with reception , they are some of the rudest people, extreme lack of communication. they tell you one thing and then you get told the complete opposite. I won't even begin to get into the issues I had when my dog had surgery. I had a phone meeting with Tara about that and we resolved it . Or the time they lost all my dogs records and tried to tell me they've never seen me or my dog before when he had just had surgery less than a year prior . And then wanted to argue with me about as I'm showing them photographs of my dog in the clinic . Sunday 11/15 around 3am I called and told a receptionist- who was very nice . That my dog was having some pretty bad coughing along with vomiting and diarrhea. She asked how early I could come in I explained I was a healthcare worker and would be able to make it for 8am , she said okay and I'll make a note of that and we will see you at 8 . I arrived with my dog after working a 16 hour shift . Promptly at 8am . I was exhausted and worried about my dog . I called the number on the sign and told the receptionist I was there for 8am and had spoken to someone earlier that morning . She was very rude and said "we are an emergency clinic we don't take appointments, we will see you when we can & call when we are ready " like I'm well aware you are a vet clinic I spoke to someone earlier i realize it's not an appointment but I'm here for the time That I said I would be and Am making you and your staff aware . I was pretty taken aback and felt the attitude I received was really unnecessary. I left and took my dog to his regular vet . I called the on call and she was able to see him on a Sunday because honestly if that's the attitude I get over the phone how are you going to treat my dog behind closed doors when I can't see what is going on ??? . At the end of the day it is about money to Pieper - just like any other buissness which I understand , employees need to be paid and services are rendered because they won't treat your animal without prompt payment. So I see it that I am a paying customer and I should be treated as such and with some Sort of respect . I'm sick of this behind the counter complex and attitude I have consistently received from Pieper Olson . Pieper has received well over $10,000 in payments from me in the past 4 years between my dogs surgeries, emergency sick visits , and when our other dog who passed was sick . They treat you like a conveyor belt and you can check out my Yelp or social media I am not a chronic complainer . I have a taken my dog to two other vets when I was in between moving and had a regular Vet in Virginia. Colchester and deep river and have never had a problem with any of those places only Pieper . We went to this hospital as it is tied to the Marlborough Veterinary, our regular vet. On our first visit to Piper Olson, 12 years ago, our first dog had to have surgery to take a foreign object that she ate, out of her stomach. Well, upon discharge, they did not give her any antibiotics and subsequently, developed an infection which was fatal!!! We even questioned them - why there were no antibiotics-their response--it wasn't needed. Below average - even questionable medical judgments. On our recent visit (a week ago), our dog had to have emergency surgery as her uterus was infected - a condition they told us as Pyometria. While our dog was there, the communication with the surgeon and doctors were good - daily updates were provided. Upon discharge, we were given a discharge instructions, antibiotics and pain meds. We followed all instructions, and though the instructions said they would call with the results of two different tests - they never called; I followed up both times. One of those tests (histopathy) was listed on the instructions but when I called for the results - was told that was never done and it was an error that it was on the instructions!! (No one cared to proof read??!?). For this reason - I am giving them only 3 stars. Average but not stellar. read more

A COMPLETE LACK OF COMPASSION: My 11 year old cat had been sick for over a year and the day came when I knew it was time to say goodbye. Unfortunately my vet's office was closed. I brought him to Pieper ER to make the end faster and relieve his distress because he cried intermittently and tried to lift his head. Dealing with the Pieper team was the worst vet experience of my life. My interactions with the staff ranged from apathetic to extremely rude. Despite me repeatedly saying I didn't want to be separated from my cat, an very rude, disrespectful vet tech whisked him away from me and left me standing in the waiting room. After a long wait, they brought me to an exam room. I could hear the staff behind the door laughing and talking about their weekend without any respect for the fact that my sweet boy was dying. No one seemed to care or want to help us. The receptionist came in and asked for payment. I think she was trying to be nice, but she spoke to me like she was reading from a "how to be sympathetic manual". Nothing felt genuine about the interaction. After waiting for a long time and me asking for my cat back multiple times from multiple people (at that point I just wanted to take him home so he could die in peace), the vet finally came in. He asked if I was familiar with the process, and when I said yes, he murmured he was sorry and administered the medication. He was efficient but lacked empathy. He left the room and I wasn't sure what happened next. Eventually someone new came in with the pet carrier and blanket. I asked if I was done, and she obliviously said "Sure you can leave any time you want" and walked out. There was no recognition of the pain and sadness my cat and I had gone through just moments before. The only moment of compassion that day were from a complete stranger who hugged me in the waiting room as I sobbed (I will forever be thankful to that women for her kindness). If I could go back in time, I would have let by cat suffer at home and let nature take its course. That would have been better for us both than our callous experience in an uncaring environment that cost me over $300. I'd return (hopefully never need to) my 10 week old puppy became quite sick and had to rush him in to Pieper where he needed a 6 night stay in ICU. There was great communication and the doctors would explain things in simple words so you understood exactly what was going on. read more

One of the worst vet experiences I have ever had. If I could give negative stars, I would. I believe Pieper is removing negative reviews. No vet even took a look at my turtle even though it had been bleeding profusely for hours before we even got to the vet. When I called ahead of time, I was told that my turtle would be seen because "all [their] ER vets can handle a turtle emergency" even though their normal exotics doctor was not in that day. My mother drove for 45min to Pieper only for no one to even triage or even look at my turtle. We were told after waiting for over 2 hrs to leave the hospital, despite driving 45min to Pieper after RECEIVING THE OK ON THE PHONE TO BRING MY TURTLE OVER. People at the front desk were incredibly rude, remarking how we could "leave" if we wanted to, but no one looked at my turtle? The owner was also rude and threatened to call the police on my mother because she was trying her best in English (English is not her first language) to describe just how much blood my turtle had lost. She was practically begging for someone to look at Turtley. My turtle finally received care in a different Hospital the next day in Mystic, and the staff there were horrified by the treatment we received at Pieper Olson. In fact, my local vet also informed me that Pieper no longer provides the excellent care that it once boasted. In the time that Pieper wasted, a piece of my turtle's shell could not be recovered. I almost never write reviews, but I was enraged by the treatment I received - as someone in the medical profession (not vet though), it is abhorrent behavior to send a patient away without even the courtesy to look at the patient. Especially when we only went to Pieper in the first place because they informed us that they could take care of the turtle! If they did not have capacity, they could have been responsible and sent us elsewhere, as many other vet hospitals did because their reptile/exotics doctor was not there! If my turtle were human, Pieper would have violated EMTALA. I honestly hope the people at Pieper are ashamed of how they treat responsible pet owners. Also! Animal Control in Middletown informed me that they have had many "run ins" with Pieper - take what you will out of that. These people are not qualified to be vets and are not qualified to hold the awesome responsibility of caring for the lives of our beloved pets. read more

It is never a great experience having to euthanize a pet and this was no exception. My vet in North Haven recommended this hospital as they had the proper neurological team to help diagnose our dog's issue(s). I want to thank Dr. Perkins, Dr. Hammond and Dr. Snider for their patience in explaining all of their findings thoroughly to us as well as the compassion they showed us and our dog.
