Overall, it was a great 1st visit. Our Vet was kind, understanding and knowledgeable. Our puppy (9 month old "Bean" (Yellow Lab) is insanely rambunctious, unruly, 60 pounds - eventually 80 lbs. +/- and hasn't got an ounce of obedience (yet). Despite the obvious challenges, our Vet was awesome! She was patient, kind and informative. Among other things, she provided me with a list of local dog trainers, among them "Tails U Win"; close to our home in Manchester. I stopped there on the way home and enrolled Bean in "Day School" an intensive on-site school for specifically what he needs. We can not wait to see the results. Golden Story Part one: TLTR Unless it's an absolute dire emergency and last resort I would never take my dog here again. (At least, their emergency room) Short version: Our 5 month old golden retriever swallowed a toy, they misdiagnosed our dog twice saying the toy made it to his colon and should pass on his own. This was proven wrong when we took him to our local vet and they had to do surgery on him because the toy never made it to his colon and was stuck in his intestines, where they surgically removed it from his intestines. We called the Peiper manager with our concerns, both sides of the call ended with frustration but she said she would send a report to the medical director and we'd hear back via email in a week. She said she would also document in our dogs record the phone conversation and email the report she was sending off to me in case I wanted to add anything.... It's been more than a week and it's not documented in my dogs report and we haven't heard back and she has not answered my 2 follow-up questions I emailed. read more

First- when reading these reviews, know there is the randolph rd location, and the Berlin St location. I would not take any of our pets anywhere else but the Berlin St Pieper location. The absolute BEST staff and doctors, and their knowledge is amazing. There are decent staff and Dr's on Randolph rd, but it's more of a "big box" feel now- rushed at times, but if there were an emergency or after hours situation, going there is fine. Just make sure your regular vet can do a follow up the next business day. read more

On Sunday, Dec 4th my dog had a couple of episodes of vomiting. As my husband was going into the hospital to have a pacemaker implanted on Mon De. 5th my son & his girlfriend, Andrea, took the dog for us. Our puppy continued with V/D all day Monday and as I couldn't get in touch with my vet Andrea took her to Pieper Olsen in Middletown. I was in the hospital all day with my husband but called the clinic three times and left my phone number as the primary contact. Three times they called Andrea and I never did get to speak to anyone. On Tue Dec 6th I picked my husband up from the hospital and we were told we could come get our dog. When we got there I asked to speak with the Vet and after a half an hour a lady came out with our dog. When I asked if she were the vet she said she was the ER coordinator!!! She began reading medications of the discharge papers but I stopped her and asked what they thought was wrong with my dog. She referred back to the papers and said no one else was available to speak to us. The bill came to almost $2,400. As I had to get my husband home we left. I again called a couple of times to speak with a Vet but no-one called back. I finally asked for the medical notes and got them by email a week later only to discover they charged us for an ultrasound, $417.26, that they never did. Today 12/26 my husband got it that charge reversed. CHECK YOUR BILLS!!! Very disappointed. read more

I'm finding this heartbreaking for two reasons to have to write this review .the original owner use to be my uncle neil pieper so hurts more then you can image. I brought my cat to them in a emergency she had fluid in her lungs. So what they did was remove the fluid and said they had to send it out to see if it was her heart or cancer and sent me home with her no meds to keep fluid from building back up in her lungs till the results came in this was on a friday .I called and got 2 days later to try to talk to the vet but only a answering machine but never got a call back ever. Sad thing my cat died a 4 days later .the problem I have is this no meds were ever given for the fluid then when I drove back there they claimed a dr abbot called me on tues but that was a lie and when I called them out on it all I got was well we will investigate with no I'm sorry or will call you with the results of the investigation nothing .wouldnt give a answer why she was never given a water pill to keep the fluid out her lungs till we find the results well in the end it was her and instead of them having any compassion they dismissed me like my baby didn't matter never offered to pay for her cremation no credit on the bill but more so no sorry no feeling of remorse for what I consider neglect nothing my uncle would rule over in his grave if he saw what there doing .this place holds my family name but it is not run how neil pieper would agree with he cared about all pets and there parents .I gave them weeks to call me back and say something but they didn't they got my money and all I have is a empty wallet and a dead pet who I loved to no end.shame on them for not caring about the pets and there parents ashamed is all I can say now. read more

I have never written a review, but after the treatment my dog just received, it is necessary for me to warn others. I should have known after it took 40 minutes for someone to answer the phone as I called to let them know I was coming in for an emergency. When I got there, the sign asked to call to confirm arrival. No one picked up for 10 minutes so I walked into the reception where they seemed totally unaware of a phone ringing as I checked my dog in. While I understand other issues may be more pressing which requires a longer wait, the lack of consistent communication and clarity is frightening. I was told my dogs vitals would be checked and then off to the x-ray. After she had been gone for 2 hours I asked the receptionist if her x-rays had come through. She said she wasn't sure if she had them or If I had to still wait for her to get them done. I asked when she expected her to go in, she said soon. She also said it could be hours after a doctor could read the X-ray. An hour later I asked a different receptionist to check on the status of my dog- she said they were prepping the X-ray for her and it'd likely be 15 minutes and that someone would tell me the results immediately . I watched both those receptionists leave for the night and 45 minutes later I approached the remaining receptionist who went to check and told me it could be hours before an X-ray. We spent 5 hours there and my dog never received the care needed. I decided to leave and asked for my dog, it took them 10 minutes to bring her out. Shame on an emergency vet for unacceptable communication. I would have much preferred to be told it could be hours when I got there. Do not go here if you need your pet cared for. read more

First time cat owner My one year old cat was spayed exactly a week ago. I noticed what looked like an infection around her incision. She was perfectly fine until today. I immediately called them (a complete mess) and Lisa the receptionist calmed me down and helped me to get the best care. It was caught early enough they were able to give her a shot and take home meds (as well as a cone.) The Dr. M was amazing with handling her as well as informing us on what causes it and how we can prevent it. He also had us laughing at one point! I typically bring my dog to Pieper Olson, but I called for an ASAP appointment there, and they had none so they referred me to Middletown Vet. I had no idea Middletown vet was so close to home so I was pleasantly surprised, and while they had a full schedule as well, they squeezed us into the schedule (this was a visit with an issue that needed to be addressed fairly quickly, so I was very happy with their accommodation). When we arrived for a 4pm appointment, we barely needed to wait at all - also a plus, since my dog has a tendency to get anxious in the waiting room/vet in general. We were taken right into the room where the vet tech was great with my nervous pup. Once the doctor arrived, my dog was significantly more nervous (more people in the room), but the doctor was so friendly and gentle with my dog, it clearly set my dog at ease. He was with great explaining the potential issue and next steps for us. It's been a few weeks and my pup is back to normal, thanks to Middletown Vet!! read more

I can only speak for Dr Hammond in the neurology department here, however I can not say enough great things!! Several years ago our dog started having strange neurological episodes. She was in and out of her primary care and another emergency hospital and put on countless medications, until I was referred here to see Dr Hammond because nothing was working and they weren't sure what was wrong with her. I was beyond devastated by the time we went here as my dog was barely walking without falling over at this point. It took some diagnostics and trial and error with medications, but I felt so relieved to at least finally have some answers and hope for our then 3 year old dog. Four years later and she is stable and doing well for the last 3 years! During the whole process, I really felt like Dr Hammond cared about my dog. He always took the time to return calls even late into the evening after I'm sure what was a long shift, and I appreciated that after spending a fortune on testing, he would call to check on her rather than always making me come in for office visits! If I could give this Vet a zero I would. Tessa Olson and her staff are nothing short of money hungry, uncaring people. I have had numerous calls and messages from people that have taken their beloved pets to this vet not only to find out that they were misdiagnosed and their pet died days later. In my case, my dog Max died due to the negligence of Sarah Lord, Tessa Olson and her staff performing surgery for laryngeal paralysis. My dog died three weeks later. Tessa Olson had absolutely no regard or compassion for Max's passing and was the meanest, rudest POS that you could ever imagine. I paid 6K to have the surgery done and it failed miserably. Do not take your pets to Pieper Olson veterinary because there is massive animal abuse as well. I have full documentation of all of this and if you need to get a hold of me just reply to this review and I will send you the information. We are gathering a group of people to file a civil case against Pieper veterinary hospital. This vet needs to be closed immediately! read more

3 weeks ago, I brought in my cat, who was blind and very nervous. She was wheezing (my own vet thought it was respiratory infection but antibiotic didn't help her) and Pieper vets examined her and found a massive tumor in her throat. They tried to save her with injections but she stopped breathing. What I am upset about, and everyone should be aware of this and say something... my cat bit a nurse while the nurse was picking her up. So, after my cat died, they insisted on keeping her and cutting her head off, to send to state vet lab, to test for rabies because she bit the nurse. I said my cat was always an indoor cat and she had updated rabies vaccine. They still cut off her head, to take apart her brain (test for rabies was negative) I got back the ashes of her body, without her head, which, for me, was desecration and this testing was totally unnecessary. Now I am afraid to take any of my other cats to this hospital. Animals can't speak. If they are upset/scared, they might bite and the hospital ought to know this can happen. A pet is NOT feral and if owner has proof of rabies vaxx - they should NOT cut the pet up to test for rabies. This has to stop. I'm seeking legal action. read more

She's patient with my shiba and always patient with me as well always willing to answer any questions and takes her time to explain any of my questions or concerns with my dog. I wanted to be sure my cat was healthy as an ox, I'm glad I found a vet in Middletown that rocks! The building was clean and the staff was stupendous, They only want the best for your furry little friend(ah)s. I cannot say enough about how great this vet was to me today. I brought my new kitten in for an initial checkup, and I'm so glad I found Dr. Mullen. I'm new to the area and didn't have an established vet yet (that rhymes, tee-hee). She started off by asking me questions about my kitten to gauge her state of health. She then did a very thorough checkup, followed by a comprehensive review of the past health issues and vaccine history. Dr. Mullen made sure that I understood all of the issues that the kitten had in the past and went through every piece of paperwork that I received from the shelter. I've never had a doctor talk in such a friendly, easy-to-understand manner before. You could tell that she really loves and cares about the animals of her patients. And my kitty loved her as well! I have a follow-up appointment in a month, and I am looking forward to making sure we have smooth sails ahead. The staff at the front desk was very courteous, the checkup/common rooms were very clean, and there was an environment of teamwork throughout the office. We just had the worst experience ever in their emergency room. Our dog, at home, had some sort of neurological reaction, where she was unable to stand up and walk. We explained this when we arrived, in addition to several other unusual symptoms. We took our place in the waiting room behind 5 other families. As their pets were brought in, more pets arrived in the waiting room. After 1 3/4 hours, we thought we were next. Needless to say, 3 pets were called in before ours. When I asked why this was happening, I was told my dog wasn't in critical condition. I said about an hour and half ago she was and she wasn't called in. I was told it was their opinion my dog wasn't in critical condition. At that point we reluctantly decided to leave. I was them told that we wouldn't get billed. I said billed for what, nothing has been done for the past 1 3/4 hour's. I hope no one has to experience this treatment when their pet is in need for assistance. read more

Buckle up, this is a doozy. My family has been going to Dr. Brothers' Middletown Veterinary Hospital since we moved to the area when I was a kid. When I grew up and got pets of my own, I took them there too. I trusted the staff and the business. My husband and I moved out of state for a couple of years, and shortly after we moved back to this area of CT, Pieper Olson took over Middletown Veterinary Hospital. I had heard very mixed things about Pieper Olson in the past, mostly on the negative side. The warnings included their disorganization, poor customer service, rude staff, high prices, unnecessary procedures, and commitment to put money over relationships and patients. We decided to give them a shot anyway. We never saw the same vet for any of our appointments. This made every vet visit feel so impersonal and like we were just another number in line. It also meant that every time we were once again introducing our pet and providing background. Then, with one particular surprise vet, my husband felt so uncomfortable and pressured about elective surgery for our French bulldog. In her whole life she had been with Dr. Brothers, his vet partner, an emergency vet, and our amazing vet and his partner in TX. None of those veterinarians felt it was necessary for her to have the surgery (we consulted all of them as we had heard of the surgery and she's particularly tiny for a Frenchie, so we wouldn't want to risk her health unnecessarily). The vet of the day at Pieper Olson spoke to my husband as if we were bad pet parents. I said we should switch vets at that time and regret that we didn't. They are so disorganized. Notes were being left out of our pets charts causing confusion with each new vet of the day. It was often our word that had to vouch for what had and hadn't been done with our pets which is ridiculous. We stopped receiving reminder cards in the mail to schedule appointments, which almost resulted in our kitten having to start her immunizations all over again (really surprised they didn't push that for $$$). We were told our kitten needed bloodwork before we were going to have her fixed and microchipped with Protectors of Animals (they seemed annoyed that we weren't going to them for this$$$) which POA and our NEW vet (yes this review ends with us finally switching vets) dispute for cats under 8 years old. What drove me to switch finally was when I paid the ridiculous bill for my cats 2nd round of immunizations in February (they also couldn't locate notes for which shot it was; second or final), they automatically charged my card (which they keep on file instead of swiping each time which is scary since they love to make extra $$$) for a pack of Nexgard for my other dog that we supposedly got in December. They didn't discuss this with me before charging me for it "it just happened automatically." So they said they must have given us nexgard without charging us (WTF are you people doing?) or that it was entered by mistake and I could go home and try to figure out the last time I got a pack of nexgard and request a reimbursement if I hadn't actually gotten it. I stayed really calm throughout the interaction at the desk but the woman behind it was bashing her coworkers, blaming them, and was generally unfriendly. I couldn't tell if we had or hadn't taken that pack of Nexgard home so I let it go. That was 2 weeks ago. The following day my husband called Pieper Olson to transfer our pets records to our new vet. He was put on hold twice for 10 minutes by the front desk, the second time a person answered as if he had just dialed in (nobody knows what's going on here). The next day I get a call from records asking if we can confirm that we want records transferred so I call back, no answer (a theme), and leave a message stating that my husband already called and spoke with someone the previous day confirming the records transfer. Finally we feel free of Pieper Olson when I come home yesterday to find a bill in the mail for the mysterious Nexgard from mid-December, which I paid at the beginning of February and it's now February 13! I called immediately this morning, no answer, left a message. It's 5:00 PM and no one has returned my call. Pieper Olson bought Middletown Veterinary Hospital and ran it straight downhill into a dumpster fire! AVOID! read more

I am so disappointed. I have brought both my cat and dog here a few times, and we were so impressed with the level of care. Today (a Sunday), I brought my dog to Pieper because she fell off the bed and had difficulty breathing (I have a 5 pound dog who fell off of a 4 foot bed onto hardwood floor). The woman I spoke to on the phone said they would see her almost immediately because breathing issues are more serious. They took her in at 12pm and told me the vet would call me when she was examined. I did not receive a phone call updating me on the status of my dog for 6 hours. For the first 3 hours, I waited outside of the hospital and checked in periodically. Each time I checked in, they told me to wait for the vet's call. After 3 hours I asked if it would be best to go home and wait for a call, to which they said yes. They said because she was low priority, the vet had not looked at her yet. 3 hours later I had still not received a phone call. You can imagine my anxiety. 6 hours later, after being on hold for roughly 15 minutes, I spoke to a receptionist who said my dog was "next" to be seen. When I expressed my frustration and asked how much longer before she is "next," the receptionist told me she did not know. I am currently on my way to pick up my dog after waiting 6 hours, and she has still not been seen. I understand that on Sundays they may be busy, given that most vets are closed, but I feel the least they could have done was to call me and establish an expectation. Not only was I kept in the dark for 6 hours, but my dog has not eaten or gone to the bathroom for 6 hours as well. I am incredibly disappointed in how the staff at Pieper handled this situation. I hope in the future, staff can at least let pet owners know how long it will take for their pet to be seen, so that way owners can make the conscious decision to either wait or take their pet home and go to their ordinary vet. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Going to the emergency room at Pieper was one of the most horrible experiences of my life. I was referred to Pieper by my local vet because he thought my dog might have blown a disc in his back because he was in a lot of pain and could not use his back legs. The local vet called Pieper to alert them I was coming. I sat for 3 hours in the waiting room in front of the staff while my writhed in pain, yelped, moaned and was crying. I asked the staff several times how much longer he would have to wait to be seen, and I was told we would have to continue to wait because other dogs were more critical and my dog was "stable." I don't know how that determination was made because no one ever talked to me or examined my dog. Eventually my dog went into shock from hours of excruciating pain and became unresponsive in my arms. He was finally seen about 15 minutes later and was admitted because he was unresponsive. They called me 4 hours later in the middle of the night to tell me that my dog was still unresponsive, they were having trouble maintaining his blood pressure and probably should be euthanized. I agreed and was crying and they told me to get my credit card to pay my $850 bill (right at that moment) for the privilege of helplessly watch my dog suffer horribly in the waiting room and essentially "die" in my arms. read more

Very disappointed in the well visit my 3 yr old GSD KC had yesterday. In short KC was treated about 1 mos ago for a UTI and than a few days after completing a 10 day coarse of antibiotics KC was having very loose stool started chicken and rice. KC was acting fine, playing, being his normal self. About 1 and 1/2 weeks of this continuing I brought in a stool specimen which was negative. About a week after that I started him on probiotics. The only thing I could think of was the antibiotics he took destroyed his normal gut flora. Now thankfully his stool is normal. Yesterday his well visit was supposed to be with Dr. Fayette, well he had to see Dr Regan who was AWFUL!!!! He never looked in KC's mouth, his ears, his eyes. He felt his stomach but did not palpate his belly. Mind you they were well aware of KC's issues the last month!!! I had to suggest a blood panel just because I want to be sure I am not missing anything! I am an experienced dog owner and KC is my 4th GSD. I did call when I came home and spoke to an office manager, who was pleasant and seemed to understand. She said she would have Dr. Fayette call me with his results, but Dr. Regan called. She offered for a NC visit today which I did refuse because he is fine now and it is stressful for both of us to go. I also felt that Dr Regan was afraid of my dog. KC has always been good when he has been there friendly with staff, other people, and other dogs. I also just found out that they muzzle him in back when they draw blood, I understand safety but draw blood in the exam room where the pet can be with their owner! read more

I have been taking me two cockapoos to Dr. Malek and his staff for tow years. Both of the dogs are over ten years old. Our family changed vets because the former vet we took them to were rude and were clearly all about the money. Dr. Malek is kind and very knowledgeable. Our older dog, Nikki, had a lot of ear infections and skin infections due to allergies. He cleared her infections and made her look and feel like a young dog again. Our beloved Nikki, who would have turned 15 in July, began showing signs that she was dying. After our family discussed the fact that we needed to "put her to sleep", as she was having difficulty breathing and walking. We have never had to take a dog to a vet to get euthanized. We were heartbroken and scared as to what to expect. Dr. Malek, Jane, Donna and Lisa were amazing. They were so kind to us. They explained exactly what was going to happen. They encouraged us to hold her and be near her. It seems like they truly felt our pain and sadness. They asked if we wanted her ashes. They also explained the cremation process. On the way out, we forgot we get the cough medicine for our other codkapoo, Nancy. The staff told us to forget about payment for anything until we were "ready'. This vet office shows kindness, compassion and empathy. If you are looking for people who will treat your dog with respect and dignity, this is the place to go. I will never forget their kindness. They made our heartbreaking situation turn into a beautiful experience. Our Nikki was surrounded by everyone who loved her for her almost fifteen years. We were so happy that her last day was spent with people who truly cared about her. read more

After telling our friends that we liked our (former) vet but weren't 'wowed' we were recommended to Dr. Brothers. I was going somewhere in Glastonbury and when I called to compare the prices it was nearly a 50% savings. I realize the area dictates the cost, but seeing as though both locations were convenient it was a no brainer. So glad we made the switch. They are kind, accommodating and very good on the phone. Dr. B always returns calls, I'd say within 30 minutes. Not only do they remember my Dog's name (I truly believe it is not just because it is in the schedule) they always remember my name. They make a huge deal about all of my pets when they come in and I have to say my dog just LOVES going there. I happen to think he is one of their favorites, but that just more proof of how wonderful they are. This place really does rock. I have been taking my dogs and cats to Dr. Brothers since he bought the practice from Dr. Handler about 25 years ago. The care that my pets have received from receptionists to vet techs to veterinarians has always been compassionate, thorough, and thoughtful. My children and I have held elderly pets while they were put to sleep and we have laughed together at the antics of young animals coming for their first visit, as well.
