From the moment we arrived, the team acted with urgency--rushing him for X‑rays within a minute and then immediately sitting down with me to clearly and compassionately explain my options. Yes, surgery is expensive--but that is the reality of emergency medicine, and you cannot fault a hospital for the cost of life‑saving care. The veterinarians at Pieper are among the best in the state, and for me, saving my dog's life was worth every penny. When you bring an animal into your life, you make a commitment to care for them, regardless of the price tag. I would make the same decision again without hesitation. A knowledgeable and deeply compassionate vet carefully walked me through the procedure and risks. Bloodwork and surgery began immediately, and the surgeon followed up with me before scrubbing in and as soon as it was complete. Throughout his stay, the team called multiple times a day--exactly as promised--to keep me updated on his condition. At discharge, another veterinarian patiently reviewed the entire case with me to ensure I felt informed and confident going home. They even brushed his fur during his stay (thank you--he was shedding terribly, blowing his coat, and I hadn't gotten to it yet), a small but meaningful gesture that speaks volumes about their level of care. The front desk staff were incredibly kind, offering comfort and support as I sobbed in distress the night this all happened. I couldn't be more grateful that I brought my dog to Pieper. God forbid I ever face another emergency--but if I do, I would return here in a heartbeat.

Every vet…read moreexperience in oncology, surgery and primary care has been beyond excellent, and it is always worth the drive for us. It is as much about the personal caring as the skill level these vets have. We have been through some tough issues with our two older girls, but they have had the very best care possible, and they have thrived beyond expectation. Not only are the vets amazing, but every staff person on each team we have known has been caring, kind, knowledgeable and helpful. They have all gone above and beyond.

While there was quite a wait to be seen, that is to be expected when going to an urgent veterinary hospital. The doctor we saw took the time to talk to me after he was evaluated. I didn't feel rushed and was able to ask questions and feel confident in his diagnosis and treatment plan. They didn't perform unnecessary testing just to raise the price of the bill, which is what has happened to us at other facilities. The technician, Shelby, that took my dog's vitals and preliminary information upon arrival was great. She was friendly, personable and understanding. The first impression is always what sticks with you and gives you an idea of what to expect from the facility. After having a negative first experience at two other facilities, Shelby was a breath of fresh air and gave me peace of mind coming to this facility.

Understanding that when you are working with the animals, you are also working with the owners and the dogs' families. I will respect Dr. Byron's title; however, the lack of communication and social skills is concerning. When we asked for their name, and we accidentally said the wrong name, "Sue", Dr. Byron responded rudely and sarcastically, "Sure." However, I remember their name and respected their pronouns because I noticed they wore a "they/them" pin. I don't want to believe this was discrimination due to race, as Dr. Byron is a part of a marginalized community as well, maybe they had a rough day/evening. However, the lack of patience, empathy, and compassion during this time was heartbreaking. I would like to say a big thank you to Ashley, one of the nurses, the admin staff, and another doctor that we worked with during this time. Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center does better with empathy and compassion for the families you work with, as, yes, the services are for the animals. Still, they have connections with humans, too.

They are compassionate, knowledgeable, efficient, and very reasonably priced. One of our rescue dogs, Fiona, was extremely fearful when we first brought her in and needed to be muzzled for visits. Thanks to the patience and kindness of Dr. Michael and the staff, she now happily walks into the office and no longer needs a muzzle. That alone says so much about how they treat animals. Dr. Michael has helped Fiona through both a rare autoimmune condition and aggressive oral cancer with incredible skill and compassion. We ultimately chose her for Fiona's revision surgery because of the trust we have in her, how comfortable Fiona is with the office and staff, and the much more reasonable pricing compared to the specialty hospital. The surgical results were amazing -- you can barely tell anything was ever done. We trust Powder Ridge completely with our dogs and cat and highly recommend them.

Hello all, just following up on Freckles, who unfortunately had the owner of Powder Ridge Vet…read morehandling my dog in the worst way possible. Basically brought Freckles an 8 year old 2 month rescue dog from Oklahoma. By far, over 55 years, best dog I have ever had. Freckles even had a minor surgery with Dr Albin a few year back. He was great. Had to drug my dog up with 3 meds, upon arrival Freckles was laying on floor of large room placed into. Corrine new of my dog, she was awesome as always, showed compassion. The tech and Dr Micheals, owner and vet came in a disaster took place. Tried placing a muzzle on Freckles, a no no, dog has never been in muzzle for anything. Then tried to surgical collars, one the size for a horse. With Freckles under sedatives, Freckles had nothing to do with all there methods to get 4 shots. I waved the blood test for heartguard. My dog was so stressed, never seen him act this way, and still did not growl or snap, which they lied and said he did. I was there 100 percent of the visit. Well next morning, 330 am, Freckles was paralyzed not only from the medicine directed on the bottle , but could not walk 100%, had no idea what was going on, was having a mental and orthopedic event. Bottom line, rushed him to Pieper Olson, Dr Roy in ER room got Freckles to walk and took blood to check for anything including tick born issues. Said Freckles was one of the easiest dogs ever to secure blood from right rear leg. My cost was $600, absolutely well spent money. Powder Ridge Vet has completely changed for the absolute worst. Even the folks working the front desk seem so stressed, no one smiles. There was a paper jam in the printer, two people kept going back and forth about this, too much paper, not enough paper, one had to win the conversation. Kudos to a young doctor at Pieper DR ROY. Terrific ER doctor and did not prescribe any drugs for Freckles. I never experienced such brutal handling of my dog. I have read many reviews now and have noticed many are going one star. Just wanted folks to understand. Feel free to call me at 860 227 7425 if you would like to discuss true facts, nothing more what took place.

Update to my earlier review which is equally negative. Central Hospital asked me for a review by…read moreemail which I was honest in that review and told them about the issues I experienced when I was there. They asked me if somebody could reach out to me and I said I prefer not to talk to them and just wanted to put the trauma behind me. Then today I received a letter from Central Hospital, which says because "my expectations regarding patient care" are inconsistent with the care they can provide I should just go elsewhere in the future. In other words it was unreasonable for me to ask questions and have a vet explain to me what treatment options they were considering for my pet or to ask to see another vet when it was apparent that the vet they assigned was insulted I was asking her questions? So rather than acknowledging that they could potentially improve their approach to the situation they instead said for the second time that I should just go to a different hospital (since the nurse told me to "go to another hospital" in the room when I practically begged her to see another vet because I was in tears). Obviously I was already going to never return there because I had such a negative experience there, but it's just beyond shocking to me that a veterinary ER instead of trying to respond in a way that is constructive and seek feedback about patient experiences just sends a letter to someone who elects to write a negative review that says "you should go somewhere else." This speaks volumes to me and confirms my very negative view of this facility. Ironically the letter opens with the sentence "you pet's medical condition is considered stable" which they would not even know whether that was correct or not because I never let them care for my pet.
