We've been bringing our pets to Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital for years and have been extremely happy with the care from Dr. Blaire Michael and her staff. They are compassionate, knowledgeable, efficient, and very reasonably priced. One of our rescue dogs, Fiona, was extremely fearful when we first brought her in and needed to be muzzled for visits. Thanks to the patience and kindness of Dr. Michael and the staff, she now happily walks into the office and no longer needs a muzzle. That alone says so much about how they treat animals. Dr. Michael has helped Fiona through both a rare autoimmune condition and aggressive oral cancer with incredible skill and compassion. We ultimately chose her for Fiona's revision surgery because of the trust we have in her, how comfortable Fiona is with the office and staff, and the much more reasonable pricing compared to the specialty hospital. The surgical results were amazing -- you can barely tell anything was ever done. We trust Powder Ridge completely with our dogs and cat and highly recommend them. read more

Hello all, just following up on Freckles, who unfortunately had the owner of Powder Ridge Vet handling my dog in the worst way possible. Basically brought Freckles an 8 year old 2 month rescue dog from Oklahoma. By far, over 55 years, best dog I have ever had. Freckles even had a minor surgery with Dr Albin a few year back. He was great. Had to drug my dog up with 3 meds, upon arrival Freckles was laying on floor of large room placed into. Corrine new of my dog, she was awesome as always, showed compassion. The tech and Dr Micheals, owner and vet came in a disaster took place. Tried placing a muzzle on Freckles, a no no, dog has never been in muzzle for anything. Then tried to surgical collars, one the size for a horse. With Freckles under sedatives, Freckles had nothing to do with all there methods to get 4 shots. I waved the blood test for heartguard. My dog was so stressed, never seen him act this way, and still did not growl or snap, which they lied and said he did. I was there 100 percent of the visit. Well next morning, 330 am, Freckles was paralyzed not only from the medicine directed on the bottle , but could not walk 100%, had no idea what was going on, was having a mental and orthopedic event. Bottom line, rushed him to Pieper Olson, Dr Roy in ER room got Freckles to walk and took blood to check for anything including tick born issues. Said Freckles was one of the easiest dogs ever to secure blood from right rear leg. My cost was $600, absolutely well spent money. Powder Ridge Vet has completely changed for the absolute worst. Even the folks working the front desk seem so stressed, no one smiles. There was a paper jam in the printer, two people kept going back and forth about this, too much paper, not enough paper, one had to win the conversation. Kudos to a young doctor at Pieper DR ROY. Terrific ER doctor and did not prescribe any drugs for Freckles. I never experienced such brutal handling of my dog. I have read many reviews now and have noticed many are going one star. I had a horrible experience with two staff memebers, one talking down to me because I was asking questions about giving my 10 pound cat over 100 mlg of gabapentin. They were not prepared for my cat to be on edge, held him down and muzzled him. Then the Vet told me she had to go to the hospital on her lunch break because My cat scratched her. So unprofessional and judmental, and charges you $75 for $10 eye drops you can buy online. Do not recommend. They tell you there will be no more charges and then they charge you anyways. When you try to dispute that they tell you to pick up your records and go elsewhere. Complete crooks! Last 2 times I went here this has happened. When I asked to speak to the doctor who mentioned all charges are complete he is not available. Very convenient. I would also like to add my friend took his dog in for a cough. They said he had cognitive heart failure. They also charged him over $2000 for the two appointments in the same month. He went to a different vet and they said he had a simple case of bronchitis and his bill was under $200. I don't know how much more proof people need, but this place is absolute shit. Our regular vet was unable to give us an appointment for 4 days for our sick dog. I contacted Powder Ridge and they were able to take us that afternoon. The service and care were top notch, and our dog is doing much better less than 2 days later. This vet is highly recommended. read more

used to come here when Dr brooks owned it.. its not at all what it used to be .. the prices have more than doubled.. I haven't been happy with Dr Michael in the past. She has NO compassion. She diagnosed my dog with cancer a year ago and delivered the info such a way that left me speechless. So my dog a year later had another surgery to thr tune of $2700.. more than doubled the surgery last year and that one was far more invasive. Yesterday I went for a follow up visit and they charged me $76!.I was appalled. I can go in and on but you get it. Its all about the money . I have a puppy with a liver shunt who had over 50 seizures within 2 weeks. Dr was aware but gave him a rabies shot anyway, sending him into a shock and he spent 3 days in intensive care at another facility. Although I left a message for Powder Ridge and the Dr. no one ever returned my call. Even after I finally got in touch with them to transfer my records, the Dr wouldn't speak with me. If you love you pet, I would recommend you find someone else to handle their medical care. They almost killed my 16 week old puppy. Don't let them do this to you. read more

Today is my dog's 14th birthday. I remember when a vet at this clinic told me she was going to die at age 9 because of a terminal insulinoma. They insisted and insisted. They told me she had less than a year. They were so sure of themselves they didn't even do more testing and were condescending and dismissive. I lost so much time thinking she was going to die at any minute. We finally got a second opinion about 3 years ago. Guess what? She never had an insulinoma. Don't go here if you want good care. A vet that graduated at the bottom of their class still gets a license, unfortunately. My dog is finally getting the care she always deserved, no thanks to you DR. BLAIRE MICHAEL. The people that work here are RUDE!!! Snotty and unprofessional. They run 45 minutes behind schedule and don't even acknowledge you. Save your PETS and yourself a big headache. Have to agree with another person posting about the push for profit. I don't begrudge anyone to make a living, but I just picked up a med for my cat today. One that is available thru a regular pharmacy, which I know I can use for my pet because when Dr Brooks was there, he encouraged the use of it is likely cheaper. I looked up the cost if I got it from price chopper-about $2 for a 30 day supply. They charged me $18. This, after the woman on the phone seemed disappointed that I didn't choose the specialty compounded liquid at $50/month. I've been through the transition from Dr Brooks thru all they others, and some were absolutely horrible. There has been no efforts on their part to address the stresses, strains, and pain that are the consequence of all the transition chaos. I've been going there with LOTS of pets for 13 years. I used to feel like people there knew me and my pets when I came in. No longer. I believe that most of the people working there are good people. I've been going to this vet probably since they opened. There are definite improvements being done to the building and operations, and I so appreciate the new room they have for when a pet has to be put down (with the private exit.) That's a huge improvement. However, I do feel that the new owner is trying to maximize profits to a point that I'm uncomfortable with. It bothers me when there's no one available at the counter to check me in when I arrive, which seems to be much of the time. There's no question that the employees working there are very hard workers...they are always "on" and very busy. It appears to me that they are understaffed and everyone is usually simply too busy to even acknowledge people at the desk in a timely manner. This is nothing new. It's obvious that the new owner is trying to pad her invoice as much as possible. I don't want to get into specifics, but pay attention to your bills and what tests and procedures she insists your animal "needs." Some people may end up having to make some tough choices when they are presented with these exorbitant costs. read more

I brought him there when he was a puppy but started going somewhere closer to home throughout his life and had nothing but problems. I started bringing him back here and am very glad I did. Through the years, change in ownership (Brooks to Michael) and breed of cat and dog (chihuahua, English Bulldog and Great Danes) the office has never faltered in their ability to provide the best care for these animals. I have been bringing my dog to Powder Ridge for several years . He has awesome bloodlines (champion on both sides) but is also on the nervous side and can be very difficult to handle in a veterinary setting. I have had more than one vet and staff elsewhere unable and afraid to handle him , and had to leave with him being unattended to. Leaving an appointment is better for everyone involved if things are not in sync from the human and canine side , it happens , thankfully not since coming to Powder Ridge . My husband and I have him under control and he's a sweet sweet dog but in a veterinary setting ,his nervousness can make for a difficult visit.Drawing blood was impossible everywhere except Here , he never knew they were even beginning and they were finished . I brought my German Shepherd in for a well check and DAPP combo boost the dr. cares so much for the animals he checked her teeth her weight everything you could possibly check and he gave her a clean bill of health for an 11 year old dog. BEST VET EVER!!! I have been bringing my Greyhounds to Larry Brooks for over 10 years. Although I moved about an hour away about 2 years ago, and after a few failed attempts at finding a new vet, I realize there are none comparable. The entire staff is friendly, professional and obviously love each animal as if it were their own. Pricing is beyond reasonable and you get more than you pay for. Larry Brooks also agreed, without hesitation, to work directly with the Greyhound adoption group I have worked with in order to perform the required vetting to allow these animals to be adopted in CT. He is caring, attentive, and will go out of his way to ensure your pet is getting the best and most appropriate care posible. I have never in my life dealt with such unprofessionalism. This vet is the absolute WORST. We have heard some pretty awful stories about them, the way they treat the pets and the way they treat the pets owners- yet still decided to give them a chance. They absolutely with no doubt live up to their poor reputation. I should have known not to bring my little guy there after have been receiving these emails they have been sending out about other clients becoming argumentative & combative with their staff- LOL- I totally can see why others have felt this way now. It also speaks wonders about the staff that work there if they have to send out numerous emails with these concerns. Not only have they made my dog sick to where he had to go to animal hospital, they still actually think what they did was not wrong. Save yourself the time and money and go elsewhere!! Best Veterinary Hospital Ever! Doctors are great as well as the support staff. Everyone is so friendly. My dog actually got excited when we went here. They never make you feel bad if you can't afford certain things for your pet. If you are looking for a vet bring your pets here, you won't regret it. My Jack Russell fell out of the car window on 691 we had to bring him in as an emergency visit. I was in tears and nervous for my poor little Moses they were great to me & him! He recovered well & the bill really wasn't that bad for emergency services. I'm living in Providence now so that's the only reason why I don't bring Moses there anymore. I will never go to another vet. The care that my cat has had here has been extraordinary. Besides having a super clean and inviting atmosphere, the veterinarians and technicians here about go above and beyond. I brought my cat here in an emergency, and he was so well taken care of. Being a first time owner, I certainly was worried and everyone here made me feel especially at ease, in particular Shane, Deb, and Larry. But everyone here is really spectacular! Since then I have taken my cat back for multiple visits, and have been welcomed with the same amount of professionalism, courtesy, and friendliness I now come expect whenever I walk in, whether it's a checkup or to buy the prescription cat food my needs. Same experience as the other complaints. I assumed since I have been going there for over 10 years since my dogs were baby pups, I assumed I established a doctor/patient relationship with them. We had experienced bizarre behavior from the female Dr. Michael and just realized if we just made appointments with the other vet doctors there or if the owner was available we could just stick with the practice. As long as Dr. Larry Brooks was still head of the practice it still stayed with patient concern and respect for pet owners. Recently he sold the practice to Dr. Michael who has exhibited condescending conversations belittling us in previous visits with her. She also hiked the prices on the prescription meds. When I went to get my meds through 1800 pet meds they decided to give me a hard time about signing off on my dogs prescription, most likely they didn't like that I was going through someone else to get their prescriptions which are a fraction of the cost of what they are charging. The woman behind the counter is very rude and down talks you. Telling me how "it is state law for my dog to have a rabies vaccination and we can't sign off on any prescriptions until you bring him in for them". I have never missed a vaccination nor have I been late as I had an upcoming appointment scheduled with them yet they still would not sign off on their prescriptions and the Rabies vaccinations were not late (past due). It was complete and obvious discrimination for trying to buy meds through another source. I am definitely offended by what they imply which is completely disrespectful to pet owners who show obvious responsibility over the years towards their pets care. Trust me I care about my dogs more than they do. I've had several complaints of the same from my friends who have left them way sooner. read more

Best vet hospital ever!!! Been going to Powder Ridge for at least 20 years or more with all my pets. From the Drs to the office staff they are the absolute best!!!!!!! I have two cockers and a King Charles Spaniel!!! Never received anything but the utmost compassionate care. This morning I brought in one of my daughters dobermans with a bad leg. They were very compassionate with Riley and examined her to the max to get to the bottom of her problem. I just can't imagine anyone not having a good experience here!! read more

When my old cat needed to be put to sleep, they were so very kind to him, even though he had soiled himself in the carrier on the drive over and was covered in it. The entire staff from the front desk to the Veterinarians are wonderful and take the very best care of our dog. Our dog is skiddish and initially had much anxiety and fear going to the vet. The staff is highly trained and educated on animal behavior and knows just what to do to get our girl feeling comfortable. The care they give is top notch and they are very affordable. I've been bringing our three cats and dog to this vet for three years. One of our cats is on a food, that was prescribed by them, for kidney stones it had. And, therefore all three cats eat it... as a precaution. Not to mention that it costs $75 a bag. Though, today, like every month, I went there to buy a bag of food. I was told by the front desk that they're under "new management " and could not sell the food to me unless they examined my cat again. So, she asked me to wait. After five minutes a door opened and was asked to step in for a discussion...with I assumed was the " new management ". The lady proceeded to tell me " by law we need to examine your cat again because it's a prescription cat food". Her demeanor was very negative. I was there to pick up food for my hungry cats. Not to get belittled by a rude lady. Her delivery was like she was talking to a child who just did something wrong. I'm 48. I appreciate anyone bettering their business. Though, that lady should not be in management...at all. I wasn't there picking up narcotics. Just food. Powder Ridge Vet...here is food for thought...you're not the only Vet in CT. Just FYI Amazon has the same food $20 less then what you sell it for. It will be delivered to my front door tomorrow. Without the rude sanctimonious woman with bad bedside manners. I have been taking my golden retriever to Larry Brooks at the Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital for several years. He has been a trusted vet and friend to my parents and their animals for such a long time, and despite his location being two hours from my home in Boston, I gladly travel the distance to get what I believe is the best and most honest care there is. The best thing about Larry is that he tells you how it is. So many vets suggest procedures and shots that are most often useless to your animal and so costly that you leave feeling robbed. Larry has given my dog the finest care and treatment and never makes me wait when I need to make an appointment. I cannot recommend anyone higher. He is a truly honest, caring physician. read more
