This is the best of the Paris bakeries, particularly if you have a macaron fetish. There is nothing but pure originality at Pierre Herme, which is why they are known as one of the very best dessert locations in Paris. And this, my friends, is saying something. This is the first and only time I've walked out of a bakery with a box of anything and a well styled bag and felt just as happy as if someone walked me into Tiffany's for valentine's shopping. Nothing here is traditional: there were literally macarons with things like olive, foie, lycee and rose, cassis, passionfruit, and flavor combinations that seem not to be possible but (nearly) all make incredibly perfect sense when you taste what is possible at Pierre Herme. At $50 for a box of macarons, this is still a whole lot less expensive than a trip to Tiffanys and possibly even more memorable. read more

When you decide to disrupt the macaron ideal, the end result is going to be a turkey burger: perfectly delicious in its own right, but can you really call it a burger? The passion fruit/milk chocolate offering (€2.40 each!) is an enlightened diversion from your classic flavors, while keeping true to the texture curiosity made famous by the cookie. The Mogador, which to my understanding is a signature flavor that initially shook the macaron universe, was the better of the two I tried. The combination of an seemingly incompatible fruit and fat, the passion fruit and milk chocolate was as pleasant a surprise as my first fry dipped in a Frosty. The Montebello, not as much. Pistachio and raspberry do not work together on this palate, and the marriage actually muted out the nuances of two powerful flavors. I felt robbed. Reader, beware: I only sampled the macarons, and I only tried two. The sliver of a shoppe has more treats, running the gamut of bon bons that'll sing the body electric. I came here in September to pick up some macarons for myself and as a gift for a friend. Luckily we were early and there were no lines yet. The macarons are delicious and tasty and personally I think they taste better than Laduree. However, the most outstanding thing there to me was the Croissant Ispahan. The croissant was absolutely decadent. I would return just to get that instead of the macarons. Too bad it's seasonal. Like others stated before me, the layout of the place is like a long hallway. The counter is at the very end - which if you were like me, you walk up and down browsing at what they have which I imagine can create a bit of a traffic jam when there are more customers. So, while it is pricey, if you're here, give their macarons a try. If you're lucky enough to be around for ispahan, definitely get it. It's delicious! I still think about it to this day. read more

Absolutely the best macarons can be found at Pierre Herme! When you enter, it's like walking into a high end jewelry store and you know this is the Porsche of macarons. There are many unique flavors and the staff will gladly explain each. The raspberry was my favorite along with the caramel. The truffle one apparently tastes like garlic so I passed on that one. There is a rose infused flavor which was very odd, like biting into your Grandma's house. Skip everywhere else and just go to Pierre Herme! THE place for macarons. We did a taste test Pierre Herme and Laduree. So Laduree has more common flavors and are still very nice. But this place has some out there, different combinations, such as Rose and licorice. The consistency of the cookie is crispier and the cream filling is richer. I bought a few of the "normal" flavors to bring back home but I would totally try the out there flavors. The Rose is not overwhelming or too flowery. The vanilla was just ok but the person helping us said this is really the best flavor. I enjoyed some of their other flavors ore. I had croissant ispahan, pistachio macaron, and an ispahan. The croissant has very crispy and layered, and it wasn't bready at all. The ispahan was not overly flavored with rose, and it wasn't cloy sweet. Finally, the perfect pistachio macaron wasn't filled with synthetic pistachio flavor like most other macarons are. They have a location across the street that has recently opened, and it's open on Sundays which is a rarity in Paris. I hate that I love him. People don't appreciate that reviewing pastry is the hardest job in food reviews. It's not like wine that you swirl and spit. Hands down a much better macaron than Laduree. Pierre Hermè macarons have a much more complex flavor than the Laduree ones....the most amazing flavor is the Frivolitè which is a salted caramel with apples and the Jardin de Lima which is a ginger flavor. They are not too sweet and not too tangy with the perfect texture. We also had these nice round, thin waffle looking treats with ispahan which is a rose/lychee/raspberry flavor. I am not a fan of rose in my food but this was a really nice surprise. I think we might have had these macarons at least every other day of the 2 weeks we were in Paris...I also picked up some jams and macarons, they are perfect as gifts if you are seeing the recipient within a day or two of your arrival back home. I now know exactly what a really good macaron should taste like. Personally, I would choose the chocolate, caramel, etc. over the fruit flavors. Not to say I didn't enjoy my fruity macarons, but I like fruit as is. (I won't knock 'em for that because I didn't have to choose to get ones that I might find a bit weird.) Their chocolates are also very yummy, and they have free samples at the register. I got a gift box for my host family and while it was expensive, it was some of the best chocolate I've had in my life. I could dream about that one piece they offered me which I reluctantly accepted - secretly, I wish that entire box were for me... When I went in February, there was a variety of citron flavored desserts to get you in the mood for spring, and they came recommended by a very nice English-speaking employee behind the counter. I had a lemon tarte, and it was divine. Not the cheapest place to get your sugar fix but when you've got an out of control sweet tooth like me, how can you pass up Pierre Hermé?! My husband and I were walking around the 6th arrondissement and came across a line that wrapped around the street. I wasn't sure what people were standing in line for, but I jumped in. My husband asked me what I was waiting for and I said, "I don't know...but it's gotta be good". He ran to the front of the line to find an upscale bakery. I had to see what all the hype was about. I picked up some pastries from both this store and its main competitor which is 5 minutes down the street walking. I have never really understood the mini macaroons, so my objective description is that the ones from Pierre Herme's, is that they fluffy and airy. There is no thin outer shell like ones I have had from elsewhere. What I enjoyed were actually the other pastries. I had the rose croissant, which had a nice just sweet enough filling. The Montebello, covered in berries, was also very good. I would get both again. I was not as impressed with the packaging as I was with its competitor. So if I were getting pastries for myself, I would come here. If I were getting it as a gift, where the appearance of the packaging is more important, I would go down the street. read more

Pierre Hermé's macarons are excellent in terms of taste, texture, and creativity. I know that some may find his flavours too out there and prefer Ladurée's more conventional subtle flavours. However, I absolutely adore his unusual flavour combinations. I'll be mostly reviewing about his seasonal/new flavours. Through his partnership with Armen Petrossian I present the latest brainchild, caviar/walnut liqueur macaron. This is truly a one of a kind macaron, highly elusive and likely appearing only this season. Absolutely luxurious, it gleamed with the similar luminance of a black pearl. In terms of flavour, the green walnut liquor is predominant, with hints of umami in the aftertaste. There's absolutely no traces of seafood (for those who are squeamish). The white truffle usually appears on the verge of Christmas. This was packaged in a different container from the other macarons due to its overwhelming scent. There were slithers of hazelnut for texture. Its nutty taste paired well from the earthy aroma of white truffle. I find this scent is reminiscent of the forest, in a pleasant way similar to mushrooms and potatoes. The chocolate foie gras is one of my favourites! It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, especially if you find sweet/savoury combination bizarre. Taste wise, there isn't much similarity between chocolate and foie gras. However, they both possess this silky velvety mouthfeel. The foie gras added a hint of savouriness. Extremely decadent and rich. Another seasonal item. I find having a cup of coffee or tea, sans milk and sugar helps enhance the nuances of flavours. Not only does Hermé perfect the technical side of macarons, but his flavour pairings are unbelievable. His daring use of ingredients may initially sound shocking, but the end results speaks for itself. Sometimes his use of ingredients serve to act as foils between different flavours, while other times is meant to compliment or enhance tastes. Avant garde, creative, and unpredictable. Precisely, this is the reason he's voted as the number one pastry Chef in the world. read more

My first stop after touching down at the CDG airport was Pierre Herme. The draw of his famed macaroons and pastries surpasses even that of the Eiffel tower, Louvre, and Versailles put together. I pushed and shoved myself into the front of the line and ordered an Ispahan and handful of macaroons in barely comprehensible French. At a nearby street corner, I hid my face and stuffed it with my edible acquisitions (passerbyers probably thought I was a drug dealer/user). At nearly 7 euros for a full sized pastry and 2 euros for a tiny macaroon, these treats are obscenely expensive but devilishly delicious. First of all, I think Pierre Herme is a pastry genius. This place is tiny and there is always a long line. I advise you to come earlier so you won't miss out on the eye candy pastries. If you're only going to try one pastry, let me suggest "2000 Feuilles". I'm really tired of macarons and don't get the hype but you must try them. My personal favorites are rose and Mogador. Pierre Herme macaroons were very unique: chocolate and foie gras, white truffle, olive oil, etc but the Ispahan was the real deal. The individual Ispahan for $7.50 Euros is amazing. It's so fabulous looking you almost don't want to eat it. When you finally convince yourself to take a bite, you can't stop! (We actually tried the Ispahan at the historic Les Deux Magots Cafe that carries Pierre Herme deserts.) Ispahan is a combination of litchi, rose, and raspberry. Hands down the best place to get macaroons. This place has a lot of unique flavors and the top flavor would be isaphan. I haven't seen that flavor in other places so definitely try it. The isaphan croissant is also super good, but it gets sold out relatively fast. The day I couldn't get my hands on an isaphan croissant, I bought the pistachio one instead. The staff is so attentive and patient and helped us pick all the best ones, and described every single flavor in such detail! Basically, we got one of everything! I was blown away how they even take care to package certain flavors of macarons separately so that the aromas of one another don't compromise the taste. Amazing. This place is a go to place if you're Paris. They're the absolute best macaroons I have ever tasted! Not only are the macaroons the absolute best, but the other pastries my husband and I purchased were also very tasty. We ordered a regular croissant, an ispahan croissant, ispahan macaroon, a vanilla bean tart, and 2 seven piece macaroon boxes (one for my husband and I to share and the other to take back to the states to my sister, and yes they survived the 13 hour flight). Total came out to 45 euros, kind of pricey, but worth every penny!! The macaroons were so good we wanted to eat the box we had purchased for my sister! The regular croissant was good, but I feel like the ones my husband and I purchased at little hole in the wall bakery were slightly better. The ispahan croissant was so pretty looking I did not want to eat it, but once I did.. oh my! It just melted in my mouth, and now, just writing about it, is making my mouth water. I really liked the macarons here, but truthfully I thought the ones I got at La Grande Epicerie and La Maison du Chocolat (this visit I got them at CDG airport, but I've also had them in NYC) were better. I'm sorry La Duree but Pierre Herme wins. I love the unusual flavor combinations in the macarons. I had a green pea and mint one a few years ago that was really delicious. Also the passion fruit and chocolate one is a perennial favorite. In the summertime definitely go for this miss gla gla because what could possibly be better than a macaron ice cream sandwich ?? Their boutiques are smaller than La Duree and they have a few locations around Paris. Get your macarons to go and have a snack in the Tuileries and then visit the Orangerie. read more
