Who are we to disagree? Not only was the bun too big for two of us to fully consume (but oh how we tried), but it was like a gateway drug to all of the other pastry shops in town. I never again had one of those warm, fresh from the oven pastries like the one I had here but this is the bakery item which has more or less lodged itself in my memory. This shop is all around town. If you see it, stop in for a chocolate-filled, sweet, bread-y bun. Sheer deliciousness but watch out; it might lead to other things.

I wanted nothing to do with the jars of foie gras or champagne, but I used one of the trunks to store craft supplies. 25+ years later and it still stores craft supplies. So, of course on my last trip back to Paris I had to finally stop back in as an adult who can appreciate things that little kid me would have just said "oh, neat" about. Spoiler alert: I still don't want anything to do with foie gras or champagne. This visit coincided with a belated birthday adventure after having a mini meltdown about getting old and missing home. Fauchon is the quintessential picture of Parisian chic. The store is elegantly simple, with clean lines and bold color. The cases have a huge variety of pastries and indulgent treats. And what they have to offer is so beautiful and so meticulous that you start to wonder how the tart or éclair that caught your eye isn't unaffordable. Yes, it's pricy for pastries in France when you consider Carrefour sells éclairs for like one Euro (and that cheap ass éclair is somehow better than 99% of éclairs in the US). When you compare it to the "gourmet" pastry scene in the US the prices aren't insane though. Would I make this my regular stop for pastries? No, but for special occasions or if you're visiting and want a beautiful experience this is absolutely worth the small indulgence. We selected an éclair with some bold graphics printed on it, two different macarons, a lemon tart (tarte aux citron), a chocolate moussey cakey piece of art, a slice of pâté en croûte, and some hot teas. Because of the artistic elements it was a less traditional texture for the éclair but the flavor was delicate and pleasant. The macarons were perfect, which I'm sure they always will be, and it's probably one of the reasons they do well as an edible souvenir. P.S. Americans, do NOT call them macaroons, those are completely different. The tart was the right amount of sour and sweet with great texture. I opted out of the chocolate and the pâté but included them in the photos so you can be jealous. The commentary on those can be summarized with, "OMG amazing." Oh, Paris, tu me manques. Je dois retourner tout de suite!

Delicious from the first bite! Later that day I ate a slice of Mori Yoshida flan after dinner. The pastry was amazing. Almost like a millefeuille without the extra layer of pastry. The custard cream was SO smooth with delicate vanilla flavor. Yum! My friend got a Saint Honoré Citron cake. I had a bite. The pastry wasn't crisp on the top and the cream was too sweet for my taste. Sure there are lots of talented pastry chefs that are women, but sadly too few still run large, successful patisseries. Claire has impeccable credentials working with Pierre Herme, at Fauchon, Laduree, and then joining Bristol, Plaza Athenee, before charting her own path in the world of gateaux (with David Granger, who handles the "Du Pain" side of the equation). I never took up art in college, so it's hard for me to spell out how everyone can use the same basics (base, pastry cream), ganaches, mousses, flourishes, garnishes and decorations - and yet, have very different products. It's not that you've not seen generous use of flowers or nuts or berries in presentation at other patisseries, but one look at the Pamplemousse Rosa, Lipstick apricot, Baton De Rhubarbe, J'adore La Fraise - even if your eye is untrained like mine - you can pick up a very different vision, and design, at work here. I went with four different pastries here to see the range of her work: Le Gateau au Chocolat: soft cocoa biscuit, bitter chocolate ganache, chocolate mousse. Vert Absinthe: Shortbread pastry, lime cream and mint leaves, green tomato jelly and candied angelica. Le Calisson: almond biscuit, almond and apricot paste jelly, apricot compote, candied melon cubes. Baton De Rhubarbe: almond biscuit, vanilla cream, cream with rhubarb. They were all thoughtfully designed with the ingredients complementing each other well. I did not expect the Vert Absinthe to be my favorite, but the intense lime cream and the aroma of the mint leaves was intoxicating. Substantively different. Memorable. For some reason, the other sharply etched memory while observing the pastry was the translucence of the gelee... Des Gateaux et Du Pain: Imaginative. Original. Delicious. (4.5 stars.
