Definitely some of the most expensive macarons in Paris (compared to the 90 euro cents you'll pay at McCafe (aka Paris McDonalds!). Lives up to all the hype but not really sure it'd be something I'd have everyday just because the sweets here are so rich. There was always a line outside whenever I walked by but I'm glad I made a point to stop here before I left Paris. Make sure you get there well before closing since there will inevitably be a long line and if you show up with one minute left you probably won't get anything or will have scant options. Since everything is freshly baked, you will have fewer and fewer options, the later in the day you go. They also had free chocolate samples sitting unassumingly by the door. This place is famous for its macarons but this little piece of chocolate melted in my mouth (and hand)! Soft and creamy and clearly memorable since I'm dedicating a paragraph to it. Hands down THEE BEST macarons. Ever. I've had my fair share in the US and Paris blows them all out of the water. The playing field in Paris sets a much higher standard for these delectable treats. This was the 2nd Pierre Hermé location we visited while honeymooning in Paris. The 1st location we tried was on rue Cambon after splurging at nearby Chanel. (review to come) Both locations were nice but this one on rue Bonaparte was larger in size and offered a wider array of desserts, outside of macarons. I was tempted to buy the boxed chocolates but opted not to as we were jetting off to Venice the following morning and I was afraid they might melt. There was no way I'd finish all my PH goodies in 1 sitting. Favorite macarons: Rose, Passion Fruit, & Chocolate Lime. More masculine & chic than its famous competitor, Pierre Hermé is known for pairing two unique flavors in one perfect macaron. I picked up a box for Wonder Twin, which included flavors like licorice & violet and saffron & aniseed. I'm boring & unoriginal & chose a solitary salted butter caramel on my way out. Buttery, chewy...macarons don't get much more sophisticated than these. I don't know how I resisted the pastries & confections displayed in cases, a delicious, tortuous sight I was forced to endure because of the slow-moving line. Aren't those some good-looking treats? Pierre Hermé has a very upscale and chic feel in their tiny little store of goods. Although Ladureé has an amazing texture to their macaron, Pierre wins in flavor. The colors are soft and adds a special touch to a lot of their flavors - a bit of nuts, dust of coco powder, or a dazzling shimmery gloss. They are soft, melt-in-your-mouth and very rich in flavor. There is a whole macaron debate on whether or not Pierre Hermé or Ladureé is better. There are pros and cons to both but in the end, they are both delicious macarons created to perfection. I decided to go on a mini macaron tasting while in Paris. Here's what I found (ranked from best to just ok): Pierre Hermes: Loved it... creamy and not overly sweet... More interesting flavors because it wasn't just sugar. Better balance. Laduree: Very good, but a little sweeter and not as complex as Pierre Hermes. Maison Georges Larnicol: Why is this gritty? I've had better Overall, Pierre Hermes was my favorite. (Prices here seemed a touch cheaper than at Laduree, but I may be wrong. I bought 4 at both places and I paid 1 euro less at Pierre Herme) They gave out a free chocolate sample as well. Service was ok, but the macarons were more complex and exciting at Pierre Hermes. Less loaded with sugar and more true to the flavor of the macaron. I usually hate Rose macarons, but this one was tolerable. Carmel was my favorite. I still think its too expensive though. This place gets 5 Ooh La Las from me! There's a long line out the door so you don't even know what you're waiting for until you go inside (even in frigid temperatures, the line is insane). It smells delicious, the people working behind the counter are just as good-looking as the beautifully displayed desserts they serve you. OOH LA LA. I went in just to try macarons to compare to Laduree, but if I were staying in Paris longer, I probably would have bought a larger dessert because those were the kind that were too beautiful to eat. Their macaron flavors are a lot more creative than Laduree. Chocolat au lait with passion fruit or green tea and chestnut, white truffle and hazelnut, creme brulee... oh so yum. But I'm not going to lie. Every flavor that I got, no matter which one, tasted the same. My husband agreed. I got all different flavors that ended up tasting like just one flavor in many colors. Maybe because most of mine were some kind of chocolate/tea/caramel/fruit etc., but I'm not sure. Or maybe because I shoved them in my mouth so quickly? What really had me was the chocolate! I wanted to buy a ton of it, but um... my American dollars really don't take me very far in Paris. I was able to try some and it really was the best chocolate I've ever had. I wish I could have gotten more. Something I will always regret. I went in wanting macarons but I will know better next time to just get more chocolate instead. PER-FECT-TION! Doesn't get any better than this. We walked in with a pretty short line but by the time we got to the register (maybe 30 Seconds) the line was out the door. It is a small shop but the people are so sweet. We even met a guy who was from the Chicagoland area working there (what are the chances?). Worth every penny. We had an assortment of macaroons, the chocolate cake looking pastry (forgot the name), and left with a huge smile on my face. The shop is located across the street from a little square. After months of staring at pictures of the Ispahan Croissant, I was finally able to try this beautiful creation and can safely say that it was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten! A few days before coming to this location I tried two of their macarons: the Ispahan one and the Montebello one. Having had Laduree's macarons the week prior, I had fairly high expectations for these ones. The filling of the Ispahan (rose, framboise, and lychee) macaron tasted like yogurt with a hint of lychee. The cookies were gorgeous but overall the texture was softer than I liked. The flavor of the Montebello macaron was a combination of pistachio and raspberry, which tasted delicious as well! If I were to compare Laduree and Pierre Herme, I would give Laduree the upper hand (and they are also 20 cents cheaper!), but both stores were fantastic. However, I had the pleasure of trying the Ispahan croissant this morning. All of the complex flavors were perfect in the flaky and buttery pastry. At 2.10 euros per croissant, it is fairly reasonable especially considering the fact that each macaron runs at the same price. Every bite gave me so much happiness. The rose and almond paste combined with the raspberry and lychee compote filled the interior. Raspberry pieces covered the top to add a perfect difference in texture. If I were able to, I would probably eat it every single day for the rest of my time in Paris. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to try something unique and unforgettable. When you walk in, you can definitely see how high-end this place is. It is so colorful and pretty inside which includes their macarons! We tried 4 flavors, all of them were the specialty collection ones. They were Isaphan, Mogador, Jardin, and praline noisette. We liked all of them except the praline noisette one. That was too sweet. The Isaphan was my favorite! So unique in flavor (rose, raspberry, and litchis) and not too sweet. The Jardin came in as a close second. The flavors were coconut, vanilla & lime, pineapple. While in Paris I went to Laduree, Sadaharu Aoki, and La Patisserie des Rêves to try to find the best pastry shop. And hands down Pierre Herme was the best. The maracons were rich with flavour and light and fluffy when you bite into it. The passion fruit and Eden were my favourites. The rose croissant was heavenly, and their vanilla tart just fantastic. The prices are a bit expensive, 2 euros for a macaron and 5 or 6 euros for a tart, but definitely worth it. A must visit if you go to Paris. read more

Pierre Herme wins over Laduree by far!! Their shops have a more elegant and modern look compared to Laduree. Since it was my first time trying them out, I opted for the variety pack of 10 since he is well known for his unusual flavors. The flavors were more aromatic and intense, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Every bite was heavenly... AND it's rare for me to really enjoy desserts in general! One of my favorites were the passionfruit, rhubarb and strawberries; yogurt, rose, lychee; creme brulee; and the truffle one! I don't quite remember if I cared for the olive oil one though. Staff was professional and very friendly. I came out of that store a happy camper with a pretty Pierre Herme bag. Hopefully they'll open up a store one day in the States! Space is quite small and had some communication issue with staff on what I wanted (only wanted 8 but got 13. His flavors are more inventive and non traditional, and his other pastries are very delicious as well, as are his jams and gelees. The texture is just as perfect but his flavors are more intense. When you think Pierre Hermé, a number of things might come to mind: macarons, sleek black décor, sky-high prices, long lines of tourists out the door starting at 10am sharp on Rue Bonaparte. What you might not think of is pastries. That would be a real shame, because Hermé's pâtisseries are excellent and beautifully presented, more interesting than the (similarly excellent) macarons, which often overshadow his other works. Before diving into the pastries, let me start off by saying that for me, Pierre Hermé's macarons blow Ladurée's out of the water, no question. They are chewier on the inside, which I love. I'd describe the textural difference by comparing the smooth inside of an Hermé macaron to more of a marzipan-like texture and a Ladurée macaron to a chalkier, meringue-like texture, and I personally prefer the former. It doesn't hurt that Hermé's flavors are much more adventurous, too. Onto the pastries: Macaron mogador (5.50€): signature passion fruit macarons sandwiching a milk chocolate ganache. I am generally not a macaron fan, but this is a rare exception. It's hard to balance passion fruit and milk chocolate, but this is perfect - very tart, very passion-fruity large macarons sandwiching an ultra-smooth, rich milk chocolate ganache. If the ganache were a bit less sweet, this would be perfect in my book, 9.5/10. 2000 feuilles (7.20€): my favorite millefeuille in Paris, with a hazelnut praliné mousseline instead of the traditional vanilla. If a traditional millefeuille and a Paris-Brest had a baby, this would be it. The feuille are absolutely perfect, flaky yet substantial at the same time, lightly caramelized. The mousseline is delicious and smooth, packed with hazelnut flavor and studded with little hazelnut bits, and the chocolate-hazelnut croustillant layer adds some more textural contrast and flavor. Surprisingly not too heavy, would also be perfect with less sugar, 9.5/10. Tarte infiniment vanille (7.30€): tart with a pure vanilla ganache made from Tahitian, Mexican, and Madagascar vanilla. Nice thick, buttery shortcrust, silky smooth, super strong vanilla ganache almost with the consistency of a good gelato. I never thought I'd like a vanilla dessert so much, but this is terrific, though quite sweet and again a bit heavy on the sugar for my taste, 9/10. Tarte céleste (7.30€): tart with passion fruit crème, rhubarb-strawberry compote in the center, meringue on top. The meringue was extremely delicate and nicely done, passion fruit cream was packed with tart flavor and worked very well with the rhubarb and strawberry in the center. Overall incredible flavor combination, but really wanted to see a bit more textural contrast, the pâte sablée base was too thin and not so firm, would've much preferred the shortcrust from the tarte infiniment vanille, 8/10. Chou envie (7.20€): classic cream puff pastry filled with a tower of vanilla crème chantilly with a cassis core and fresh berries. Stunning presentation, the puff pastry was good but a bit doughy. Vanilla chantilly was excellent, though I don't think the pastry needs so much of it, and would've liked to have more of the cassis compote in the center for some more tartness, overall a safe flavor combination but nicely executed, 7/10. Croissant ispahan (2.10€): This is pretty unique, a croissant with a rose-almond paste in the center covered with a sugary glaze and candied roses. The outside was nice and flaky with a good bite to it, though I wish the inner layers were crunchier. Really liked the addition of the rose flavor, though like most of Hermé's work I found this to be too sugary. In the end, the long lines and high prices are justified at Pierre Hermé - touristy yes, but far from a tourist trap. As I said before, get some macarons but definitely try some of his pastries as well! read more

Most likely going to buy the birthday cake for my sister here =) You must try the Lady Gla Gla. They were the first to come up with macaron ice creams that I ever so and the flavor is always SUPERB! Rose macaron with lychee and raspberry ice/sorbet inside. They have good macarons but a lot of people love the mille feuille. I was lied to the first time I went there that the mille feuille was nothing special but then my sister ate the one she shared with her friends and told me that it was pretty good... well it took me freaking 5 years before I finally got to have it... I can't remember now how good it was but obviously not that good if I don't remember lol Still, this place is a classic and much better than La Duree. I prefer this over that. I wanted to hate this place. Really, I did. My ex is a macaron snob, and there is no place more snobby about their macarons than Pierre Hermé. I was hoping to come away saying "I've had these, they're no better than the others I've had in other places". But in this case their snobbery is 100% earned. These macarons are impeccably flavored, impeccably baked, and impeccably presented. So arrestingly good that eating them while walking down the street might send you careening into a lamppost with distraction. And at a little over 1 euro each even a gap year backpacker you can eat one or two without breaking the bank. (Fellow reviewers, nota bene: "macaroons" are the mounds of baked coconut. There are two places to get the best macaroons. One has traditional flavors like chocolate, raspberry and lemon while the other has highly original and surprising flavors. The latter is of course Pierre Hermé. This place specializes in macaroons but also makes chocolate and other pastries. The macaroons are heavenly, light and are as tasty as they are beautiful. The flavors may not be for everyone but I love them. They rotate the flavors ever few months. There is an Asian influence so you may have a "green tea" macaroon or a "wasabi pistachio". My favorites are "vanilla olive oil," "rose" and 'chocolate passion fruit". Other flavors include "salty caramel" and "jasmine" added with something else that I can't remember but it tastes like vanilla with overtones of tea flavor (very good too). In terms of texture, they are light, melt in your mouth and do not become hard or "cakey" in your mouth the way lower quality macaroons can. Aesthetically, the macaroons are colorful. Some are pearly or iridescent. Others may be composed of multiple colors. Some are speckled. All in all, they are just as pleasing to the eye as to the mouth. The other famous macaroon place just has solid colors. This place has really taken off in Asia where I think they already have four boutiques. It hasn't come to the states yet. If you are ever in Paris, Japan or London, you can have the opportunity to taste these delicious sweets. They are pricey....about 3 dollars give or take per macaroon so it really remains a "special treat". Pros: all of the above Cons: you can only keep them in the fridge for three or four days after purchase. If you travel with them, you must pay extra for the hard box because otherwise they will get destroyed in your luggage (this happened to me). Price is high. The only macaron I don't like here is the bitter chocolate/black currant which I find way too sour. They rotate flavors so if you really love one, you may not see it again until the next year! There is always a huge line at any given time of day. If you are able, you should definitely afford yourself this scrumptious treat! Note: I am reviewing this particular store because I think it is one of the biggest but the quality of the macaroons is consistent at the different stores so really, you can go to any Pierre Hermé. read more

I am totally not going to choose one famous macaron maker over another, sort of like frozen yogurt back home. Everyone has something good they bring to the table, and I want to try everything. Pierre Herme hands down though wins in the unique flavor category. I will admit that I gave my mom a white asparagus and hazelnut flavored one so that she would let me have the entire box we bought here. It worked well. Note: I did try it and it only tasted like hazelnut to me, so if you want someone to stay away from them, make sure to really get that white asparagus point across. My favorites were: Mogador, a passionfruit and chocolate macaron, was so good. The shell really did taste like a piece of fruit. Creme Brulee, it definitely had the flavor of it. It almost seems like it's just going to be vanilla, but then there's that slightly burnt sugar taste, along with a bit of a custard flavor. Mint: it was a very sweet mint, not too heavy. Nothing like toothpaste or a hard peppermint candy. Chocolate: I saved this one for last. It was amazing. It made me wish it was not the last one. It was just pure and intense. Pistachio: I did not think I liked pistachio. I really, really loved this macaron. The sweetness takes away from it being a very nutty flavor. I just listed nearly half the box, it would figure. Pierre Hermé macarons are my absolute favorite! Their boutique on rue Bonaparte in Saint Germain des Prés can easily be mistaken for a jewelry store from the outside. Every bite of the macaron gives you a moment of pleasure, and definitely should be enjoyed with some coffee or tea or you might think it's too sweet. I love their macaron flavors from the basics such as caramel w/ sea salt, to the more unique such as passion fruit milk chocolate. Careful if you're buying them by the box though, they only keep for a couple days so share or enjoy them right away. Their Isephan, Isephan tart, and Croissant Isephan are also stars of the house that you must try especially if you like rose petal/raspberry/litchi flavors. All of their cakes/pastries are beautifully presented. The chocolate tablets/bars are also delicious, my favorites being milk chocolate w/ sea salt and the milk chocolate hazelnut. I'm a pastry chef from Chicago, and going to Pierre Herme in Paris was sort of a pilgrimage for me. His pastries are classic French with a twist of genius. Perfect little works of art. Almost too gorgeous to eat... almost. Because I did not have the time to sit down and enjoy one of those marvelous little pastry creations, I opted for the more portable route: the macarons. They were excellent, obviously. But the five star rating here is awarded mostly because one of them was so good that the flavor and the experience have stuck with me through all the meals and desserts I've had in Paris and London in the past two weeks. And because I'm still thinking about it now. It was the cassis. I got it because I wanted a good variety of flavors, not because I am a particular cassis fan. I was in my hotel room later that night, exhausted after a long day of walking and eating when I bit into the cassis. I was feeling a bit blasé about it. "I'm not going to be into this one but I'll eat it anyway." I took a bite and moved to put the rest of it down, but literally halfway through my movement I stopped. The flavor- the tart and the tang and the clear punch of the cassis overtook my palate. It was incredible. I spoke, out loud, to no one, "Oh my God." I wished I'd taken a smaller bite so that I'd have more left to savor. It was an absolute shock. In the absolute best way. The rest of them were really delicious. Oh. My. Gawd. If my taste buds could sing, there would be a full-blown "Il Divo" concert(referencing the Italian male quartet, knowing macarons are a French specialty. Stop judging) in my mouth after each morsel touched my tongue. My husband and I ordered a sample of for different flavors, the most memorable being the Ispahan (rose, lychee, strawberry) and the Celeste (rhubarb passion fruit, strawberry). These specially flavors are a whopping €2.50 a piece, but worth it for the flavor an be texture--plus you get to keep a cute tin! The service here is amazing and their employees speak multiple languages so it's perfect for tourists. The macarons are so delicate and flavorful. The chocolate is very rich and you are able to see what percentage of cacao is there and the pastries are to die for. read more

Definitely was not disappointed and think that the dark chocolate macaron was the best macaron that I've ever had! The people working in the store were super friendly and they have very unique flavors (i.e truffle or apple & vegetable).
