Everything here photographs very well. Unfortunately, given the extent of the menu, the food really falls flat. Everything is just a bit off. First and foremost, there is virtually no smoke flavor in the meat which is backed up by the visual of almost zero pink. They claim on the menu the brisket is 12 hour smoked. That was highly in doubt by our party. The ribs were equally as bland and boring. The potato skins seemed to just be roasted skins with some loaded features piled on top. They were neither crisp skins nor twice baked style potatoes. The beans were lacking flavor and a bit watery. The baked potato salad tasted like mayo and salt. The coleslaw was the winner of the dining experience. Finally, they pour expensive one ounce pours. That's a short pour anywhere. Staff was great, but that's not enough to stop here and pay quite a bit for lackluster food and very very expensive drinks. read more

What an amazing place. The interior is so cool! Had the 3 little pigs. This was a slider with chicken, 1 with pork and another with the brisket. Great BBQ! Tried all 3 of the bbq sauces. Ok, no problem. 45 minutes later a waitress comes out and says they only have 4 people in the kitchen and they've had tons of to go orders and it's going to be awhile. My coworkers ordered this bbq one day at work so I figured I would give it a try. The brisket sandwich was ok. Just brisket on a bun nothing else on it. The Mac and cheese was watery. I've never had Mac and cheese like that and it was gross. Probably slightly overpriced, Paid 15$ for the sandwich and Mac and cheese side. First let me say the wife & I usually visit Pig in a Poke monthly, just because there's not a huge selection of good food in our area. Our usuals are Texas Roadhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebee's, and Pig in a Poke. It's a tight race between Pig in a Poke and Texas Roadhouse as you which has the best food. Now to our latest trip to Pig in a Poke, we were seated ordered drinks, let me say my wife never ever drinks alcoholic beverages, she orders a Mountain Dew in which the waitress responds bottle or draft, lol my wife said draft is fine thinking that was just the way the waitress referred to a fountain drink. I ordered a ice water with lemon. Upon returning with the drinks the waitress brought my wife a Mountain Dew and a Michelob Ultra, as well as my ice water. My wife said who's is this? The waitress replied well I ask you bottle or draft. My wife explained she thought she was referring to the Mtn. Dew. At this time we ordered deep fried banana peppers. I'm not sure if the waitress knew if she was in Pig in a Poke or Disney World... Finally after about 15 minutes she returned to take our order, when I asked about the appetizer (deep fried banana peppers) she said yeah sure. She took the rest of our order and left. I asked my wife do you think she understands what we are saying? Because she sure didn't act as if she had a clue. After another 15 minutes she ask if we she could get us anything, we said yes the appetizer and refills. She returns with the refills and I again ask about the appetizer. This time I said it's been a half an hour and we still haven't received the appetizer. Her reply was oh no you just ordered the appetizer when you ordered the other food, it'll be a few more minutes. We simultaneously replied no we order the appetizer when you brought the drinks & the beer we didn't order. I said if you didn't put the appetizer order in until we ordered our meals we don't want them. She then reply's oh they're done now I just have to go get them. We was like what?? She had just said they would be a few more minutes. She left returned in around 7 minutes with the appetizer and our meals. She said I can take the appetizer off the order since it took so long to make them, by this time we just laughed. I said no that's fine, we'll pay for them. I can say this is not the norm for Pig in a Poke and maybe she was new, only time will tell. The food was great I had ribs, baked potato, and house salad, my wife had the loaded fries with pulled pork. Also the deep fried banana peppers were delicious. I did see help wanted signs so hopefully they were just training this lady, as this was the first time she's been our waitress. Hope this helps. read more

First, let me say I'm a sucker for sitting outside, and I love their outdoor patio seating. Secondly, I had the sampler platter and really enjoy all of the meats. I'm a BBQ snob and have to say that all of the pulled variety were great, while the ribs were above average, but not life changing. For a side, I went with the sweet potato fries and weren't blown away by any means. But all in all, I really enjoyed my meal here and will be back for sure! This BBQ place is where it's at! Wow! I've been here twice now while working in the area and it is so good. If you're in Pikeville, Kentucky, do yourself a favor and don't walk, but run to this place for some grub...you won't be disappointed! I had the beef brisket, which was so tender and cooked perfectly. The sauces at the table include BBQ, Carolina BBQ (mustardy/BBQ mix) and spicy BBQ. All three are delicious. I had their homemade white cheddar macaroni and cheese and let me just say, I wish it came in a larger portion because it's so rich and creamy. The coleslaw is also very tasty. My coworker had the onion rings and I'm not usually a big fan, but these are coated just enough and fried to perfection. We had the fried pickle appetizer and that was done very well too...just enough coating, fries to perfection with a zesty sriracha dip. Being from Oklahoma I have always been a bit of a BBQ snob. After becoming a KCBS BBQ judge it has become even more difficult to make me happy with BBQ. And being a bit of a pitmaster myself, I tend to believe that most BBQ joints fall well short of what I can do myself. Pig in a Poke isn't bad. The brisket has always been over done, and the fact that it is served chopped rather than sliced is borderline offensive to me. The ribs are always cooked far too long, but that's not a surprise. For some reason people like to think ribs should be fall off the bone tender- without understanding that means they're actually burnt. Can't fault the restaurant for giving people what they want- even if what they want is wrong. The pork is average, but could really use more seasoning, and probably a bit more of a bold flavor profile in the rub. The fact that I sauce it heavily speaks volumes to anyone that knows me. The chicken is good, but tends to be a bit dry. That said, the potato salad is some of the best I've ever had. The wings are superior that those served in many wing joints. And the atmosphere is great. It nods towards the rustic feel of a hole in the wall BBQ place while being modern, comfortable, clean, and visually appealing. If you transferred Pig in a Poke to Kansas City or Memphis it would fail pretty quickly. However for Pikeville Kentucky it delivers for the BBQ lovers that don't have other options and it appears to be very popular with those that aren't connoisseurs of BBQ. read more

In town on business and decided to give it a try. My coworker and I both ordered the BBQ sampler plate. It came with ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, cornbread and 2 sides. The ribs were VERY tender as other reviews claimed. Maybe just a bit too tender. They should hold to the bone enough to eat but still be nice and tender. The flavor was good though. The pork and chicken were both good but not exceptional. They were a little dry buy it was 8:00 on a week night. The cornbread, potato salad and Mac and cheese were all quite good. All and all the sampler was a ton of food and neither of us finished. The inside of the building is pretty nice with a large bar area and plenty of seating. They have about a dozen quality beers on tap and a extensive liquor selection. All of this said, I decides rate the place 3 stars. The beers were expensive for the size pour, and I would have liked to have seen some collards or green beans on the menu. The meats were good but not amazing. I came in with a huge party, and the staff was surprisingly efficient! The waiters and waitresses came out immediately with appetizers, and made sure to check up frequently to see if we needed anything. Melita was especially great! I ate the pulled chicken, it had a great consistency and flavor. All meals come with huge amounts of food, and their fries are super tasty. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night. They were on a wait so we sat at the bar. Bartender was friendly and service was good. It took about 45 mins to get our food, but overall food was good. I had the 1/2 rack of ribs and they were excellent! My boyfriend had the pulled pork and brisket platter; the brisket was fantastic!
