Last Tuesday, I ordered in advance for pick-up so I could have a great meal while watching the presidential election. We ordered one pound of both the pulled pork and brisket and two servings of green chili mac and cheese (family favorite!). I have ordered from them at least 15 times now since moving to southern Arizona and have always received exceptional food. A friend highly recommended the desserts from this food truck. When I showed up, I noticed they offered banh mi tacos! I am a huge fan of both bahn mi and tacos; the combination seemed heavenly. I would have been foolish to not try them! Unfortunately, I should have stuck with the desserts. The meat contained ample flavor but was dry. On the outside, the stale tortilla added no benefits. The basmati rice, to top it all off, only came across as an odd pairing for the tacos. Everything clashed for me. In stark contrast, the salted caramel cupcake tasted divine. The icing was delightfully smooth and creamy. A burst of salty caramel within the center exploded in my mouth after each bite. This cupcake was one of the best cupcakes I have ever tried. I'm a little disappointed with Pin-Up pastries. They were scheduled to provide pastries for an event at the company that I work for and at the last minute they didn't show. From my understanding it was due to the illness of the owner's mother. I totally am in understanding and compassionate person however they hadno back up plan and I was not made aware that they would not be coming to the event until 3 1/2 hours before the start of the event. I had already had printing services place their name on our flyer so we did not hand out our flyers and had to put together something small and took their name off of it. I truly hope that the owner's mother has the best of healthcare and that she is convalescing comfortably. In the future there should be some type of contingency plan to make sure that obligations are met. This is one of the few food carts that can really satisfy your sweet tooth in style. My most recent Pin-Up Pastries treat was eaten during Eastside Eats, a food truck fundraiser to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) on March 31, 2012. Large fresh strawberries, buttery pound cake pieces and chocolate sauce on a skewer. Talk about being speechless. Pin-Up Pastries didn't even know what to call it. It was big enough for two. Yep, we shared. And it was decadent. The pound cake pieces were buttery. The fresh strawberries were huge, juicy and perfectly ripe. And the chocolate sauce? Who doesn't like dripping chocolate? We got it all over over our fingers, my phone, even my hubby's chin. Of course, that was just an excuse to kiss him and lick it off. Okay, okay. I know. Get a room. Anyway, as for how to make this treat better? I'd recommend that it be divided into two smaller skewers, served in a paper food tray with a small chocolate dipping cup on the side, and a fork. It would have made the experience a little less messy and easier to manage, especially when there are often no places to clean up at a food truck event. But that's just a nit, and an esthetic one at that. It didn't change the fact that this fruit-and-cake-kabob was awesomely delicious. Maple Bacon Whoopie Pie The ladies had me at bacon!! They did a wonderful job at the Pley Date at the Children's Museum. I had the bacon and my wife had the creme bru le--which I know I butchered the spelling. First of all--they crusted the top of the creme with a torch--love that!! It worked really well and it was yummy--wife shared a bite!! The Pie--let's just say super awesome yummy tummy extravaganza--the pies were soft and had great flavor. The whipped creme was extremely light, fluffy and had a nice sweat taste--and don't forget the whole thing was covered in maple bacon. I was so impressed and it was so good. Consider this woman wowed by the wondrous whoopie-pies offered by Pin-Up. I had never had a whoopie-pie before and wanted to know what all the rave was about. Immediately after having a chocolate pie with salted caramel filling, I'm bummed that such a large portion of my life has been lived sans whoopie pies! Why do I say that? Because my pie was sooo good! The chocolate cake was so light and fluffy. It felt like it melted in my mouth! And the caramel filling is so addicting. I ate half of the filling before I touched the chocolate cake part itself. The filling is light and not too sweet so it's not too "empalagoso" (Spanish word for something that is so sweet that one can't eat too much of it). The chunky salt is a nice touch. A day later and I'm still thinking about my whoopie pie. I'm impressed. And how cool is their bright pink food truck?! read more

Full disclosure - I bake professionally so I am EXTREMELY picky about baked goods. EXTREMELY. I've been wanting to try Pin Up Pastries for a while but at the previous Food Truck Round Ups, I was either way too full or they were sold out. Lesson learned - tonight it was my first stop! I tried the chocolate whoopie pie with salted caramel filling. DELICIOUS!! The cake was very moist and soft and the filling wasn't super tooth-achy sweet. I loved it!! My son had a brownie that was topped with caramel & marshmallows. He devoured it! My husband tried it and loved it, too. Good stuff!!!! read more

We discovered Pinup Pastries at the most recent food truck roundup (a fabulous thing by the way!). I made sure to leave room for desert since we wanted to hit up one of the sweet treat trucks. Normally we skip desert but felt this was too big a part of the overall experience there to miss. I'm not really much of a whoopie pie person but I was lured in by the chocolate w/salted caramel filling one, which they didn't have in cupcake form. So glad I went there! It was amazing. The cake part was very moist, unlike too many whoopie pies. And the filling? Oh dear lord. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven. :) My partner got the chocolate cupcake w/malt ball frosting. We each shared with the other, so I had already had some of the whoopie pie when I tasted the cupcake. Doesn't make for a fair tasting really. While the cupcake was very good, I had already been spoiled by that whoopie pie. I'm guessing if there had been a salted caramel version of the cupcake I would have loved it as much if not more than the whoopie pie though. All in all a fantastic treat for us! read more

We had some great eats in NE Tucson today via Tucson food trucks at the Bloc fitness. I have a friend send me a note to try the whoopie pies, oh I am so glad we took her advice. We ordered three items from the menu to go. We order a whoopie pie with vanilla creme, one with salted caramel creme and a maple bacon cupcake. Oh my goodness it was heavenly...which one? All of them. The chocolate whoopie pies were moist and delightful and the creme fillings were so creamy and sweet. My favorite was the salted caramel but anything caramel is my favorite. But let us not forget the maple bacon cupcake...oh my goodness, like yummy breakfast in a bite. We cut the cupcake in fourths to share, the cake was moist and no way over powering with maple, but with the frosting and bacon bits on top you must eat it all at once...wow sooo good! read more

These ladies make the greatest pastries known to woman and man! They are always fresh, delicious, and most likely going leave you salivating for more. This will cause an addiction and make you follow them around town to various food truck rallies just to a taste of their heavenly goods. Luckily, they are two amazing women who love their fans (and stalkers) and treat them well! Lately they have been experimenting with a frankencobbler in both peach and berry.
