After a payment issue that was my fault, Steve Bell, the operations manager, was kind enough to help me while responding with an incredibly quick response time. So my daughter got married at Running Deer last December. As my wife and I live in California, I…read morewas concerned about the weather and the location of the venue which frankly is a bit out of the way. But we arrived with our minds open and our expectations high. Upon entering the venue, I was immediately concerned at the stark furnishings and frankly cheap looking chairs and tables that covered the floor. The wedding, of course, went off without a hitch. The reception began with an open bar and some hors d'oeuvres. There was a raw bar. The clams oysters and shrimp were frankly lukewarm, and certainly not fresh. My wife became ill upon eating one of the oysters. Needless to say I was quite disappointed, but then it got worse. My wife is a vegetarian and as such I ordered a special vegetarian meal for her which they did not have, and knew nothing about. I was very specific about this and when we questioned the event manager, she was frankly quite rude. I forgot to add that before this happened, during the seating just before the wedding, my ex-wife, who is as hostile as can be, made a bit of a scene about sitting next to us. My wife and I, who live in Southern California are quite happy and laid back and could not have cared less where anybody sat. So after my ex-wife threw her little hissy fit out of our presence, the manager charged up to us as if to chastise a couple of school children. She snarled: "Now I don't want any trouble from anybody. Here's how it's going to go". Dumbfounded, my wife and I looked at each other and pretty much just laughed. We found her cartoonish approach to be hideous and her bad manners, not one bit amusing. For what we paid for this wedding the least she could've done was maintain some level of decorum and respect. It was if we were the troublesome junior high school couple and just got caught roaming the halls during study hall. But we laughed it off. However, things got really annoying and frankly made me very angry once dinner began. The plates were rushed to the table as if by an Indianapolis 500 Pit Crew. I mean there's a way to serve a plate. Reaching in, placing it down carefully with a smile, asking to be sure if this was what was ordered and wishing you a pleasant dining experience is always standard at a wedding; but no, the plates were flung on the table and I'm surprised that the food didn't land on the floor. We were rushed through dinner, and the server tried to remove my wife's plate no less than three (3!) times before she'd finished her meal. I had the fillet mignon, which was served less than hot, and overcooked. It resembled a hockey puck. It too, fell victim to the over ambitious servers who stopped by twice and tried to remove my plate before I finished. The desserts were of poor quality and not varied at all. Lastly, after a wedding, it usually serves a venue well to follow-up with the parents of the bride to not only express thanks for their business, but to inquire as to whether their expectations were met or not. Perhaps a comped dinner visit as a "thank you" (My wife and I received all of the above after our own wedding at Scotland Run, five years ago). We've received no follow-up, no "thank-you", or any post-event contact of any sort. Completely tacky. I would advise any couple in search of a wedding reception venue to simply save their time and bypass a visit to Running Deer. Poor quality food, rude staff and dreary atmosphere do not make for an enjoyable time. The quality of the event left us feeling ripped-off.

The course is in very good shape right now and also impressive on the amount of grounds crew working on Sunday, I would not know about slow play due to the fact that the few groups in front of us move along just fine. As for players complaining about leaves on the course, well it is in the woods, its going to happen, however I always see the crew dragging the blowers around dong there best. So enjoy your game, if you start after 9 AM, well you should be ready to take your time. Well done all workers of the course, its a pleasure to play every Sunday morning.

Then on hole 4-5 the ranger comes and is nit picking our shots telling a beginner in our group that 4 shots out of the bunker is unacceptable. Just overall a poor experience the course conditions need work the roughs are full of member made kart paths. The bunkers are full of rocks and no sand mind you. (No wonder it took 4 shots he was dodging rocks) I've been golfing my entire life and I have never been treated by a ranger this way. Really put a bad taste in that beginners mouth about the game of golf. I understand he's got a job to do but hovering over our play and calling out bad shots is not how you do it. If you are looking to purchase a membership in the area like I am. I'd recommend driving the extra 15 min to pinelands. Wouldn't recommend this course at all. Spend your money elsewhere unless you like someone following your play and telling you how bad you are.

Wildwood golf and country club is a really nice option to play a classically designed course while…read morevisiting the shore. This little Donald Ross Design has a really nice practice facility including a full length range, short game area to practice your 120 yard wedge game and in and also a chipping green complete with bunkers. Upon walking through the clubhouse and out to the first tee you're greeted by a very helpful staff and a nicely stocked pro shop. The first tee really sets you up with what you'll see while out there for your round. A well maintained tee with tree lined and well defined fairways and the requirement tom move the ball off the tee one way or another. Slightly errant shots easily get you into tree trouble and very errant shots will find lots of trouble. One of the things I don't like here is the use of out of bounds within the property. I understand from a safety point of view why this is done but a hole like the par 5 12th having OB in the left trees (which plays adjacent to the 11th hole) and OB in the right trees makes this hole just dumb. It's already the narrowest driving hole on the course and that OB just makes it even more ridiculous. On top of this issue, getting home in 2 is not really an option because of a strategically placed tree that prevents a quality look into the green. Realistically you need to play this hole 200-225 off the tee, 190-210 for your second and 100 in to have any real chance to score. Leave the driver in the bag. The greens here at Wildwood are superb. Rolling fast and true they are a real treat to play and putt especially if you have any experience with Donald Ross greens, you'll really like them ALOT! Unfortunately for me my day did not include dining at the club so I can't speak for the food or service of the restaurant stuff but the outdoor patio overlooking the practice putting green in the short game area with a nice little view of the first tee does seem like a very nice place to get lunch after your round or come out for a relaxing bite to eat. Wildwood is a really nice golfing experience with fantastic greens and some quirky tee shots. A little course knowledge is a must to score and patience on the greens is a virtue, but that 12th hole is a drag and some of the hidden hazards that can gobble up a seemingly quality tee shot can upset an otherwise good day of golf and beware of the windy days!
