I have never been so conflicted when I write a review. On one hand, the massage was exquisite. Firm and accurate technique to rub out knots with forearms and elbows, eased with oil heated with warm stones on the back. Precision work on the face with exotic smelling gel. "Tui na" where the extension of limbs and folding is likened to physiotherapy. The location is clean and quiet, the music soft and relaxing. But, after checking in to invoke the 20% discount, running my credit card for $79 for a 1.5 hour full body (20% off should have made it $72) and paying the $11 tip to bring it back to retail price, the owner/masseuse sent me into my room to change, but called me back out to complain about the tip--she showed me a $60 1 hour full body massage receipt that had a $15 tip and insisted I needed to pay more. I countered with the fact that she only discounted $11 when it should have been reduced by $18. She said that was only for the one hour special. I pulled up the coupon and showed her it read 20% off for $60 or more... .. . By then it was obvious she was dug in, and I already ran by credit card, and was not interested in a chargeback war. I did really want to try the massage, so I ended up changing the tip amount to $20 for a total of $99. A younger masseuse came in later during my session, and I heard no less than 2 walk-ins and another who had an appointment. They sent away both walk-ins. Great foot traffic for a Saturday late morning--probably why they are able to continue operating in this manner. Yes, she did leave to get lots of things including hot moist towels to clean off oils applied, and also to give direction to the other masseuse. At the end of the day, if you can accept that this will be a cost +20% tip service, you might actually enjoy it. read more

I've going to Ping Wellness for almost four years now. They are honest and very reasonable. I've had issues with sciatica in the past where I was bed ridden and almost incapacitated. They have helped me stay pain free for these last four years and have always bent over backwards to accommodate my busy schedule. I have worked with all of the therapists there, each one having their own special skill set to help. I normally get a very deep tissue massage and would highly recommend to anyone with deep back or neck issues. read more

Was traveling up in Portland, and found this place via a quick google search. Making an appointment was very easy, and they were willing to accommodate two massages- same day, same time. There wasnt any "pre-tipping costs" prior to the massage as mentioned by others. I enjoyed the massage very much. Hands down, BEST MASSAGE IN PORTLAND (debatably of all time). Contrary to the other reviews, let me tell you why... My fiancé and I love massages. We get them everywhere we travel and have been all over Portland. We've had $200 massages and $60. Pings is absolutely the best massage I've ever had, every time. All the masseuses are skilled, meaning I don't have a bad experience whenever we go (and we go relatively frequently). They're available, just call and they can usually get you in same day (one of the best perks--if you like massages, you know how difficult it can be to get an appointment). And, so affordable! Like I've said, I've been to some of the best spas around the world and I often leave feeling disappointed. Why? Because I want deep tissue. When I say deep tissue, I mean deep-breathing-on-the-verge-of-telling-them-to-stop-type deep tissue. Most masseuses still use Swedish message techniques with maybe some more pressure. I ask them to go harder, but it still doesn't cut it. Not at Pings! For us who like it like that, they start by walking on your back. It's not for the faint of heart, so just say no if you're a medium to light type person. Afterwards, they keep going to town! They're intuitive body workers and will focus on muscles you didn't even know we're sore. You can also tell them what hurts and they'll focus on it. I've come in unable to turn my head with a kink and left with 180 mobility, they're real healers. The masseuses are all so nice and friendly and sweet. If there's a language barrier, just point and use hand gestures. I've never had trouble telling them what I want. They end with hot stones and a hot towel to wipe off the oil. I usually can't get up from the bed right away I'm so relaxed. I make up for the affordable price with generous tips every time, and they always remember us and treat us right. We do the couples massage, so it's $50 a person, when they're usually $100 or more for one person! They're not trying to rip you off by asking for a $20 tip. That's a good freaking deal! I give it to them happily for their hard work, as I do for all other service industry workers who are busting their butt to make a living. My girlfriends and I were vacationing at OOB and started looking for a massage place on this rainy day. We had a lot of misses but than we found wonderful Ping place. The people were freindly and very responsive to or requests such as how hard we wanted the massage and trouble spots . They took time to find the trouble spots and the hot stones were wonderful. I feel like my massage was wrapped in a giant misunderstanding. I came in only because everywhere else was booked. Yes, I was desperate. My shoulders felt like they were resting on my ears. My back muscles were twitching. I've been working 6 days a week and I'm 6 weeks post op from shoulder surgery. My masseuse and I couldn't communicate. I wanted to tell her all this but no. Neither of us spoke each other's language proficiently. Even though I called in advance, when I came in I was asked how long I wanted. I said an hour and they had me prepay $60. I asked just for top up and I did not undress below the belt leaving my yoga pants on. This drew a laugh from my masseuse but I felt like that was the only way I could tell her I wanted my back and shoulders worked on. I've never had anyone walk on me. That was new and was okay except my pelvis was too bony to handle that. Since there was so much tension and stiffness in my shoulders, I found it impossible to tell my masseuse that her touch both tickled and was tender. Combined with the language barrier, my muscles just kept slipping under her touch. My muscles usually hold so much tension that they slip out of everyone's hands. I couldn't express this. I felt a little guilty. It was really rough. I think my masseuse was the only person at the shop though. The phone rang. People stopped in and she was the only one to answer the door. The hot stones were wonderful though. I loved that. When I went to leave, the lady gave me my credit card receipt back so I could give a tip. Okay, so I wrote what I thought was appropriate, but she was watching me the whole time. "20!!! 20!!!" "What?" "Everyone gives $20!!!!" "But that's way more than 20%." She walked away and I adjusted my tip to be more but not $20. I was so embarrassed. But why am I embarrassed? 5 months ago I stopped into Ping as a walk in customer with a knot in my right shoulder. A mid 60s sex worker posing as a massage therapist proceeded to stomp all over my back separating my first, second and third ribs. 20 minutes into the "massage" when she pulled off my boxers and instructed me to roll over I ended the session and left. It was about a day later that the excruciating pain set in in my shoulder and arm. Thoracic outlet syndrome has caused numbness and weakness. Dozens of visits to chiropractors only offered mild relief. Several DO visits also did next to nothing to help me. I just spend a month in Florida NOT fishing, NOT playing golf, NOT sailing. This experience has been life changing. I finally found an osteopath who was able to make some adjustments and offer me some relief. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. A friend recently told me I should sue them. Not really my style but I thought I'd write this review in hopes that more people won't be injured at this place. They need to be shut down. read more

Are you interested in paying for torture? If so, go here! Let me preface by saying that I am not snooty about massage parlors. In fact, my boyfriend have been on a seedy-Asian-massage-tour-of-America for quite some time now. Thus, this poor rating comes from bad practices of the establishment, not some uppity attitude on my end. This was a truly horrific experience, and I wouldn't even return here if someone paid me. It was a low-key kind of night with my boyfriend, so I mentioned going to Ping's. We have driven by it so many times, plus their website advertises a couple's massage. I called, and they said that we could come in 10 minutes, so we headed right over. When we entered, I used the restroom. Yet, upon my return, the woman guided me to a single room. She was really kind of scary, and didn't speak very good English, but she was basically telling me that there was no room with 2 beds in it (which is the definition of a couple's massage). I didn't really know what to say, and my boyfriend was in the restroom...so I just sort of went with it (which was a big mistake), stupidly. We both should have left, right then and there, but we didn't.... I got undressed and laid on the table. The room was absolutely freezing. I somehow kept thinking "she will probably turn the heat on when she gets here," except that never happened. She began the massage, and it was pretty standard. I really could not think about anything besides the fact that I was freezing. I had goosebumps all over my body, and within 5 minutes I was wanting it to be over. I can honestly say that I've never wanted a massage to be over before. The pressure was fine, but my masseuse really didn't have any sense of where my back needed attention, nor how far was appropriate to stretch me. There were a couple times when she was actually simply hurting me by the way/places she stepped on me. She accidentally stood on my hair also, which was was the bad kind of pull. In retrospect, it may have been a nice distraction for how cold I was. The fact that she wiped a hot towel on me was torturous because it was the warmth I was craving, followed by even more frigid feelings to follow. Suddenly lessons from high school began singing in my brain, particularly the words of my science teacher: "evaporation is a cooling process." Bet he never thought I'd be thinking about him as an adult, naked on a table somewhere.... Anyway, when she turned me over, she didn't ask me if it was OK to pour oil all over my face. Not to mention, it smelled awfully of citrus. I was pretty irritated at this point. I think she even caused me more pain because she was grabbing at my neck and jaw, and my toothache wasn't appreciative. The annoyance heightened when her hair was dusting over my face, just slightly enough to make me furious and wanting to swat her away. At the end I think they were expecting 20 dollars a piece (based on what other reviewers have said + their body language), but we left before they could argue about the 10 each my boyfriend left (which, was more than generous for the torture he paid for). This place was freezing, the quality is bad, the couple's massage is a total scam, the attitudes are unfriendly: there is nothing redeeming about this place. Well, actually, the only redeeming quality is that it inspired at-home massages, which, my boyfriend is pretty amazing at from start to finish. read more

I'm not sure what's up with all the hate on here but I was really impressed with my first massage at Ping today. After living the neighborhood and driving by hundreds of times, a twinge in my neck led me to call. I was able to get in ten minutes (!!) later and arrived to the small, dimly lit but clean space. This is not your typical spa (read: white person) massage. It is on par with the types of massage you'll find in any well appointed China Town with an assortment of traditional massage techniques employed. You're directed into a small room with a massage table and relaxing music playing, where you undress and slip under a towel. There you'll be worked over with oil and sweeping massage movements and tui na, walked on under you feel like every ounce of stress has literally been wrung out of you and then treated to a delicious head, face and neck massage. Each area was finished off with a hot towel compress. There is not an abundance of draping, which I actually appreciate because sometimes I feel like ten minutes of my massage at other places is the careful tucking of a sheet. It's annoying. My masseuse did leave the room three times to answer the phone and greet a walk in customers but I don't know - I just rolled with it and it wasn't a big deal. If you're looking for perfunctory fluff and bluff, go to Massage Envy. The style at Ping is more akin to medicine and I loved it. Yes, there is a language barrier but as a person who has traveled extensively and been treated graciously despite not knowing the language, I didn't find it particularly burdensome. And it's a small price to pay for an excellent $60 massage. I tipped $15, so just over 20% which is standard and didn't get any attitude. Came in for basic 1 hour massage. The massage was sub par. The woman doing it kept leaving room. It was annoying. When I was leaving I gave her $ 10. For a tip and she started shaking her head and said "no ....$20 ok 10 not." I turned around and left. I wish I could speak Chinese because I really would enjoy explaining how tips work. I have been to this establishment three times since they opened. Most recently 8/31/14 in the evening.first time was alright. The second time was better, but the older woman that waited on me DEMANDED her tip and stuck her hand out. This most recent visit, I went in out of not knowing what to do. I have been to traditional Chinese massage places in many cities, and this one is the only one I know of in central Portland though there is one in the Maine mall. It seemed clean enough. (In reference to the previous review, I lay down under the (obviously fresh) sheet as I would do in a western place, but that turned out to be a mistake and when the masseuse came in she made me get on top of the sheet, then she covered me with a towel. Maybe they change the sheet after each customer but not the towels underneath it. That seems fine to me. There were several fresh hot towels wiping me off during the massage which felt awesome). Soothing, slightly elevator-music-like music played the whole time. I had the 90 min hot stone massage--the hot stones were used for about 10 min and felt lusciously relaxing. She used a lot of elbows and put her whole body weight on me, very effective. It was a deep firm thorough massage that left me a little sore, in a good way. It re-aligned my body as I've found western massages don't often do. The foot part was amazing and I will try a foot massage next time. Coupons for $10 off are available online; bring the coupon number with you. FYI at the counter, the masseuse reminded me sharply that a tip of $15-20 on top of the base price is expected if it was a good massage. And it WAS a good massage. read more

Website says couples massage $99.00 we get there they charged us $120.00!! Right off the bat we should've argued but we both were in desperate need of massage and google had excellent reviews so we continued with our appointment. Well the massage was horrible.. She made me get completely undressed including my undergarments. I was like I'm not comfortable with this she said it's ok over and over again! Then never touched my arms head or shoulders, which by the way is one of the main reasons why I went because I'm a hairstylist and need of them worked on. No rhythm what so ever. Then when she was done she says ok lady get dressed. I get dressed I ask if they can break a bill and so I can tip because being in the industry I know people live on tips. Well honestly I'm a huge tipper.. Well today I was just gonna leave 10% honestly they didn't even deserve that. But again my beliefs are to tip. Well they pointed to sign and said 20% services is 20% tip.. So just so I could get out of their I left them a $20 bill for them to fight over. I WOULD NEVER GO BACK!
