We (two adults) went on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30 pm. Birthday party time! We were surrounded by children ranging from 5 to teen, and their parents - so we were definitely out of place without a child in tow. But we were in town briefly and who can pass up this blast from the past? Four-wheel roller skate rental and admission cost us $8 each. The main rule here is spit out your gum - there are containers for it and it's a $2 fine if you're caught with it. The rink was a good size and well maintained. Because it was bday party time, there was a brief pause for races and games, and the hokey pokey, but then free skating. The kids there loved it; there were rails that roll to assist children who aren't great skaters, which was nice but ended up tangling the kids when they fell. We tried not to laugh. There is a food area that we didn't venture into because of the parties, and a kids skate area that is the equivalent of the small dog area of a dog park. There's also a few standard games: air hockey, skee ball, and other video games. It was a fun time, but we had to leave after an hour because the swarm of kids was so thick that we could no longer really skate. I'd avoid this time to go, but I'd definitely return on my next visit to Austin. read more

I hope Playland never goes away. Despite the outside appearance of a scary-mafia-warehouse-used-for-weapons-storage, and despite sharing a parking lot with an antiques mall, Playland is super hip. I'm not sure if its because the giant roller skate-shaped disco ball is a throwback to the skate ring I used to frequent as a kid, or if the radical, colorful carpet reminds me of the mall arcades of the 1990's, but there's something endearing about this place. Granted, the floor could use a touch up because the bumpy curve trips me up, but that's almost part of the sad reminder that roller skating isn't the attraction that it used to be now that kids are fat and prefer to play My Little Pony Skate Park on the xBox. Oh Austin....I don't miss living in you one teeny tiny bit! With that bitterness out of the way, let me just say, I ADORED this little skate place. I have the CUTEST pair of roller skates EVER. They are pro level skates, that are super colorful......and serve no purpose on me other than to look wonderful, seeing as I can't skate worth CRAP. One day, I will soar past all you mere mortals on my bubble gum pink wheels.....but alas, that day is not today. You know how most people go to a skating rink and....skate....on the rink? Haha, ahhh, I didn't. I went and skated on the carpet, outside of the rink. Why you ask? BECAUSE I CAN'T SKATE AND I DON'T WANT TO TAKE A RISK DAMAGING MY MONEY MAKER. (which is my face, ya big perv). Up until this past weekend on my inaugural trip to Playland.....I hadn't even been able to stand up in my skate without my legs flying out from under me and my ass making friends with the floor. So....carpet skating it was. I am SUPER happy to report, not only did I achieve vertical status, I also....hmm hmmm hmm....moved! OMG, PRAISE BE. Every now and again, they dim the lights, turn on disco lights and you can take a spin and feel SUPER cool. They have organized speed skating races, limbo games....they keep it fresh and fun. My biggest kudos about this place is that it brings together a largely DIVERSE crowd of people. Austin is a very segregated little town, and it can be really hard to find places and spaces where you see beautiful cross sections of every race. And this place has that. And it made my wee heart so happy to see many communities coming together to just have fun and play. Like....unbelievably happy. :) So, I really like this place, and I recommend it. It cost my friend and I $9/each to skate here, and we didn't have to rent any skates. read more

A bunch of friends and I decided to get our 70's groove on and head to the roller rink....it takes about 5 minutes on skates before it all starts coming back to you....how to hit the corners without looking like a dweeb, how to skate backwards (well, that one took me two visits) and how not to fall on your a**. All in all a good time was had by all with the promise to go back next Tuesday. I don't know how you can have a better time for $7! My only complaint is the "hotdoggers" who have been skating nonstop since 1976 and do their damnedest to scare the living bejeezus out of everyone by zipping around and jumping between other skaters all while going 200 mph. I have never actually seen them hit anyone...but with my luck, it will end up being me, laid flat on my back with skate tracks across my face. Slow Down you Roller Skating Madmen! I grew up roller skating at my local roller rink 4 or 5 times a week listening to the Bee Gees. In the 70's I guess the roller rink was the local after school day care because my parents among others dropped their kids off for a couple hours while they did adult stuff... Fast forward 30 years - I get flashbacks at Playland on Tuesday night Adult Night. I strap on my white skates with purple laces and pom pom balls and skate like it is 1979. read more

When you're wondering how my legs got so awesome, you'll know that I am secretly at this place every night skating my ass off with all of the teeny-boppers. One day I thought I could give up drinking, so I tried a non-drinking activity with friends and this is where we landed. BEST night without booze I've had in a really long time. Not only did they have several games throughout the evening but they had a dance-off in the middle of the rink where we witnessed coordinated dance moves on roller skates. I have no idea where they have the time to figure that out but I was really glad I was a part of it. I would highly recommend returning on Tuesdays for Adult Skate. The kiddos were cute and provided lots of entertainment but they were constantly falling all over the place. I've never felt more sure that I was going to break a kid's face on accident and ruin it's life. On a final note, gentlemen, write this down...this is a super adorable place to take someone on a date. read more

Playland is one of my favorite places in Austin. When I lived there, I would skate at Playland every Tuesday ("adult") night, and still do when I visit Austin. Playland has a nice big smooth polyurethane floor, good music, fun lighting (and a smoke machine, neither used too often), a fun crowd, and nice people running the place. Adult night is very inclusive: it doesn't matter if you're 18 or 80, straight or gay, on in-lines or quads, or even a wheelchair--everyone enjoys grooving down to the music and sharing the floor. Probably thanks to its licensing, I've heard some great new music first at Playland--including Madonna's "Hung Up", two weeks before it was released! Playland tuesdays are cool. Always run into some of my diverse skate friends there. It's a nice break from serious speed skating since you can't go very fast. There's a wide variety of really good skaters (quads, funky funks, freestyle, hockey, speed), but hey, everyone who knows how to skate remembers how they started and everyone, no matter how good, still bites it occasionally. If you fall or need some help, it's easy to find. 1st Sunday of the month is flat track derby, totally austin, totally fun and they serve beer. read more

So I'm doing this for the families that might want to come here. Here's some info if you haven't been in a while but wanna bring the kids. :) First off, its a roller rink so put your kids in jeans and bright tops to make it easier to keep track of them. Its hot once they get moving so put their hair up and wear t shirts. Friday and Saturday are the busiest days so you might do better on Sunday. Its going to cost you $8 per kid and if they are new and are going to need a walker to stay upright then its an additional $5 per walker. They have a small skating area in the back for little ones to practice on until they are brave enough to hit the big rink. The reason this is only a four star review is because the walkers and the playscape are at the back, but you can't pay for them there. Which is stupid. I had to leave the kids at the back alone because i wasn't going to try to hobble them to the front and back again to get the walkers. This system needs an adjustment. Speaking of newbies, they have free lessons (with admission purchase) on Sundays from 11:00-11:45am. They lock the doors at 11:10 so don't be late. The food is pizza, nachos, (nachos are a good deal! huge serving) hotdogs and the like. Its like $5-6 per kid if you want them to have a meal item and a small drink. If you are planning on coming back on a semi regular basis the best option for drinks by far is to splurge on the "Playland" water bottle $10 and add the kids name to for $2. Free water refills and they'll fill it with soda for $2 as well. A good deal considering its the size of a med drink which cost $4.xx. The floor is hardwood and pretty well kept. The reviews about the music aren't wrong. They are trying to be a bit more modern but they need a better selection of songs. Over all, I can't really complain about the music, its loud, the lights are bright and flashing. Better music would improve things but their choices don't detract much from the experience. Honestly the kids don't care much about the music, its more can i stay upright and how fast can i go? The bathrooms were rustic looking but functional. They appeared to be clean as well. Small stalls are pretty standard as everyone is on skates and the small space helps you get back up... For me it was a blast from the past from when i used to skate as a kid in the 90's. I got to recapture my childhood for a while and I'm pretty pleased that i remembered how to skate at all. Its been 14 years since I did this last! I wasn't the only adult trying to relearn my lost skills so don't be afraid to give it a try yourself. Overall the kids had a blast, even though they are new and fell a lot (expect this) and are somewhat sore today, the first thing they asked me this morning was if we could go back again this weekend. I think that speaks for it self. It's great exercise and the kids are having too much fun to notice. This place could easily be the single best rink in Austin with a few minor tweaks. read more

Love to take my kids skating here. Admission is reasonable. The rental skates are in decent condition. They also offer quads and in line for additional charges. they offer a skate mate for a additional charges. They also have a play scape or additional charges. lots of nickeling and diming that's the reason for the 4 stars other than that it's a pretty good environment. I know I have NO business judging, but it still is weird to me when I see 50 year old men in there, looking like they walked out of the 80's skating backwards on a Saturday afternoon. JS.. I was a Skateland & Skateworld kinda girl back in my day, lol, so it wasnt until I had children that we started going to Playland. My sister however, was a Playland girl. We all love that it still a fun time for all the kids, they get to skate for free for the year, once a month, and they have the cart-helper-skate-PVC pipes w wheels-things for the kiddos that cant skate. Adult night offers some of the best people watching in town. There are people who might have been in "Roll Bounce", first date couples, an awesome dude with glow-sticks, and that 60 year old guy who isn't afraid to rock the short shorts. Skating seems to bring all these people together for a pretty good time. Throughout the night I heard Ace of Base, George Clinton, and Nirvana, which kept everyone wheelin' around and skate dancing, or trying to be the next best speed skater. I suggest you bring some bottled water and comfy socks because chances are those ankles will be hurting by the end of the night. Also, don't be afraid to request your favorite song at the front. They have a pretty random selection from oldies to the Jonas brothers (I beg you not to pick Jonas for the sake of sanity but if that's your thing, whatevs). Its a great way to boost your mood and feel like you are 13 in the middle of a work week! read more

We pulled into a very unassuming and decrepit building, almost wanting to leave before giving it a chance....We walked in and were greeted by wonderfully fun music, activities and a classic shiny wooden rink!!! I always enjoyed skating as a child, so it was a huge treat to teach my girl! We had a blast and I couldn't be prouder of her growing abilities in the rink. Holy time warp batman! We showed up for adult skate night in 70's basketball outfits, and the funniest part about it was that half the people didn't realize we were joking! The Good- Some of the best people watching in Austin. From the creepy dudes hauling a$$ around the ring by themselves (who had been going to Playland since Jr high and never missed a week) to the dance teams to the roller skating rookies falling on their faces this place has it all. The Bad- The sweet smell of feet and the gigantic jar of used gum at the front counter ($2.00 fine for chewing gum for all you lawbreakers.) The Ugly- Vending machines only! No concession stand, and more importantly NO BAR. I guess some people can't booze and roll, so they wreck it for the rest of us! Fun Tuesday night, worth checking out at least once. read more

Tuesday nights. Be there. Spit your gum in the gum jar lest you pay a fine. Drink a fizzy beverage from the machine, maybe play some air hockey....and whoooooaaaaa reverse skate. Holy crap that's tough after you've been out of practice for a while. I have honestly never seen such an odd mix of people under one roof. Pros, joes, pedophile look-a-likes, youngs, olds, fats, skinnys....they're all their doing their wheeled thing under the mirrored disco skate. You're not going to find a better Tuesday night activity than Playland's adult night. Just don't break your arm like I did a few years ago. I visited Playland for the 2nd time during adult skate night on Tuesday. I was hoping for a better experience than the first. I still had fun because I love to rollerskate, and this place is the only rollerskating rink that I can find within a reasonable distance from my neighborhood. However, the music was still not very good -didn't hear many songs from the 80's (the songs I grew up skating to), and not loud enough. Several skaters had on their own headphones - good idea! Also, we went the same direction the entire time! It was nice to see a staff member on skates monitoring activity on the rink. Skate rental was reasonable and skates (included in the $8) admission were in pretty good condition. Restrooms and other public areas seemed clean. read more

Tuesday night time warp! We walked in paid our 7.50 dues which included a pair of roller skates. For a bit more you can get the blades and other glamorous speed shoes. OPEN SESAME - through the double doors we found a humongous room full of big kids like us. I saw sparkly costumes, lots of 80s gear, shorts shorts, wigs, some boring, conservative ones (like me), but just people dressed whatever whichever way they preferred. Loved the dress code diversity! Now as for skating talent, it ranged from me (big amateur) to blades of glories gracefully zooming and weaving in and out the crowd. The playlist was upbeat, mixing everything from Rose Royce's "Car Wash" to Eiffel 65 "I'm Blue". Then there was that train and people riding it doing the hand motion. What a fun night! even for a slow-as-molasses skater like me. Tuesday night is on! read more

I honestly had so much fun coming here. I guess we came on a really good day because there weren't that many children around and the few that were there were very respectful. As well as the pro skaters that were around. Everyone was real respectful and was having a good time. I had no troubles with the staff, they were friendly and had no problems switching out skates for me and my group. The skate floor is great! They had plenty of tables and they also had some cool events. I loved that everyone from young to old and pros to beginners were just there enjoying themselves. I've been to Playland for two different kinds of parties now. I was fortunate enough to show up to two occasions of the Mustache Roller Skate Party, which was a private, adult function. Not that the rink was different or anything like that, but for the private party we were able to bring in beer, food, etc, and we didn't do the hokey pokey. I'm not sure what my friend paid to rent the rink but he said he made money on the event and we only paid $10 each to show up (skates are $8). The kid's party was a little less spectacular. First, I'm not a good roller skater, so skating in the whirling abyss of children to adults, skill level none to pro, held very little appeal. They must have had 10 different kid's parties that day, plus folks that obviously came just to skate (it was a Saturday). The place was choked. They did all the same things they've been doing at skating rinks for decades now: hokey pokey, limbo, a few races, go counter clockwise. Not sure how someone could update the experience. Maybe if I was ever any good at roller skating, I'd have more wispy memories that would make this a more entertaining experience. They are light on amenities, so if you're going for lunch and a roll, it's not happening here. I was pleased to see that Pinballz has two tables over by the bathroom. Don't forget there is a kid's playscape, "walkers" (for the inexperienced kids, $3 rental), and a few more arcade games in the back, which is tough to get to if you're on foot. My teen son and I went this Saturday. My first time and his return visit. The kids there were polite, as were the staff. We encountered crowded skating conditions which is nice, after having seen near-empty skating rinks in the 90s on a weekend. The sport is more fun when more are there :-) The floor is concrete with a smooth spongy paint on it. Kind of like frozen jell-o. Odd sensation if one is used to wooden floors but easy to get used to. Since I did fall on my butt and elbows I was able to test the floor for comfort after a fall, and it was much nicer than falling on the flat-painted concrete many places have! The night featured a segment when folks could show off dance skills in skates. Very very impressive skills and I'm happy the management offered up the two or three songs' worth of dance time. This lets folks show off and lets others see what can be done on inline and fourwheel skates alike. No, I wasn't in the center, skate-dancing, but while most everyone was forming a (polite) crowd to watch, I had room to test some sorely-needed new moves :-P Overall very nice, and we'll return on my next visit to Austin. read more

Seemed like a run-of-the-mill roller rink to me. Not amazing, not bad. Interesting music selection (Cat Power, was not expecting that). Good skating surface. I was NOT a fan of those PVC pipe "walkers" that they hand out to every other kid on the floor. Doesn't teach good skating skills and seemed to be the cause of a LOT of accidents I was seeing... why not keep kids in the kids-only skate area if they need those? I saw an older man dancing on his own to some music. It made me smile. read more

We have been twice, and both times it was rented out for private parties. I cannot say enough about how friendly and helpful the staff was! Someone was even able to repair one of my own in-line skates that I had broken the latch on. The place was clean and in good condition - the skate floor appears to have recently been replaced. Unbelievable. I was hoping my second visit here would be better than the first. I am currently sitting in the parking lot with my sister because their rules have changed and now you must pay an $8 fee to enter, whether you're skating or not. This change forced us to leave because we didn't want to pay $16 just to sit inside a hot, stuffy room crowded with people. Before, they did not charge a fee to enter. You only had to pay if you were skating. Not only are you charged with a ridiculous fee, however. If you're feeling hungry for some low-quality overpriced snacks, the tables are usually filthy with the messes from previous meals. I'd also like to note that the environment is absolutely disgusting. Scattered remains of chips, wrappers, and sticky substances can be found all over the floor, and the maintenance there is terrible. It is also extremely hot. Expect to be drenched in sweat when you leave. Oh, and are you planning on bringing kids? Be careful. I watched the same kid get knocked over and run into three times the first time I was there. I'm cringing at how low-maintenance this place is. read more

Keep your fingers crossed that you'll get a good pair of skates that work properly, that you won't bust yer butt in front of too many people, and that you skate better than you actually remember. Had an adult private party last night. The employees are stellar. So helpful and friendly. Made everything so easy. Everyone had a blast. I've been going to Playland since I was a kid and I'm 53 now. They make sure to keep it all updated and super clean. Didn't even do the cake until later at home because everyone was having too much fun skating. Able to bring a device to play our own playlist. Amazing lights + sound system. We've had parties here before but never for adults. Was the perfect choice. Thanks Playland! read more

THE BAD No ATM. Can get $$ out of the till for a charge of $2.75. Soda/water vending machines only take quarters or dollars. Both machines eat your money and don't give accurate change back. Kids climbing/play area costs an extra $3.00 per kid to climb. This is on top of already paying an admission fee and a skate tental fee. It's like a small McDonalds indoor climbing structure. Skate buddies (pvc pipe roller assists) are $5.00 per skate buddy. They do not give you a refund at all for returning them. Not even a dollar... Staff will laugh at you.... most are super nice. Some are extremely lame..... Alot of moody teenagers are staff. Snack counter staff is super nice. Snacks are unfortunately super over priced. You have to pay for a water cup to get water. OR you can use the drinking fountains outside the bathrooms. The taller fountain works if you push the button on the side but doesn't work if you push the bar in front. Shorter fountain works. Carpeted floor area is dirty and doesn't appear to be routinely kept clean. No seperate rooms for individual parties. THE GOOD Fun, Fun,Fun. Great wood floor. Great music. Great lighting. Has a beginners skating area at the back. Usually has smaller kids in it. However, adults and teens can skate on it too. Kids skate free program is awesome. Kidsskatefree.com Sitting benches along the wall on both long sides of the rink. They have a metal bar(s) and/or a concrete (short) wall you can hold onto for the whole length of the rink if you need it. Teens who skate here are nice and polite. They do traditional races with multiple age categories, limbo and the hokey pokey. There are plenty of picnic type tables for seating. The skate refs (black & white striped shirts) are super nice and do look out for kids who fall. read more

I can't think of too many things to add, but since I went for the second time tonight for adult skate night, I had to put my two cents in (ok, maybe three cents for inflation) and say how RAD this place is. When I walked in, it's just like I became 10 years old again. I got my slightly-too-big and also rickety skates. Expect a blister or two. It's worth it. I laced them up, and then headed out onto the floor - I used to be decent, and it took a few rounds to get the hang of it, but I was able to go backwards and do a few other silly things. So even if you haven't been on wheels for 15 years, you'll pick it back up. No food/drink besides vending machines, not that much in the way of seating, it can get crowded, and Tuesday from 7-10:30 is the only adult time to go (yay for not having to dodge children). But it's totally worth it for fun, and an excuse to skip the gym one night! read more

There food bar is not open weekdays except Thursday and Tuesday after they kick all kids and Tweens out.
