I was going to stop at a different restaurant in Lomira for dinner on this particular evening, but they were unexpectedly closed so I looked at my bookmarks for another option. The Pioneer Keg in Theresa was the closest place that was open in my bookmarks and I knew of at least one menu item I wanted to try, so I pivoted and went there instead. To go, I ordered the brick cheese cheese curds and a 1/2 pound grilled cheeseburger with fries for the side. I opened both containers to take pictures right away and my first reaction was disappointment in how plain and limp the fries looked. To top it off, they were barely salted. This was an upcharge from chips, too, which made me regret paying the extra money. I was excited for the cheese curds, but they also didn't live up to expectations. The breading was, I dare say, chewy with only the very tips where it was dropped into the fryer being crunchy. They ended up being the highlight of the meal, though, which doesn't say much. Other places that sell grilled cheeseburgers have both the top and bottom buns be grilled cheese sandwiches with a burger patty/patties in between the sandwiches. Apparently not at The Pioneer Keg. All "grilled cheeseburger" means to them is the bun should be replaced by pieces of grilled Texas toast. There wasn't a single speck of seasoning or salt on the burger patty and cheddar is not a flavorful cheese to use on a burger, so that was underwhelming to say the least. What a great little gem of a bar. Just blocks from Widmer Cheese. We had some delicious bar food. Their legendary cheese curds were tasty. We also tried the prime rib rolls and pickle chips. Actually I thought the pickle chips were the best I have ever had. Also impressed the had bock beer on tap. We will definitely be back soon. read more

Do not order one of the salads. I ordered the buffalo chicken salad and, according to the menu, it had "a lot of extras" on it. When it came, I thought it was shrimp on the salad. However, it was tiny little bits of chicken. I would estimate that the salad maybe had a total of one chicken tender on it, cut into little pieces. It also had four thin slices of VERY pale tomato, a few rings of onion, and a couple of black olives on a bed of iceberg lettuce. A huge disappointment for almost $12. My husband said his sandwich was very greasy. Even the fries were flavorless. Based on our experience, including poor service, I cannot believe that Wisconsin Foodie would still stand behind their recommendation. read more

If you get anything from here get the Cheese Curds. It's fried cheese and it's amazing! The cheese comes from Widmer's, a local cheese company. We heard their burgers and pizza were good so we ordered a supreme pizza. It's 5 pounds! It was so good and we found out that all the ingredients are sourced locally. A few warnings which should not deter you from visiting this establishment: it isn't a big place and they have limited seating but they can seat about 6 people comfortably without moving tables around; they have an extremely small staff so you have to be patient (we were there on a Friday evening and in total were there for a little over an hour); their hours are limited during the week so check their hours before you go. A wonderfully quaint family run neighborhood pub about 10 minutes off of I-41. We were there for the Friday Fish Fry and were treated to 5 pieces, potato pancakes (or fries), slaw, and rye bread for only $12. The burgers start at $5 and are generously portioned. Great selection of domestic and craft beers on tap, plus many more cans and bottles. Full bar. Worth the detour. read more

Great homey little place, you can tell it's a local hangout with regulars. The bar was full so we took a table with a view of the Brewers game and on the advice of a friend, ordered the deep fried brick cheese curds. They were served with ranch but it was not needed, these curds are delicious! Light and crispy, not a heavy crumb coating. I'd go back for these alone! Then I was served my main course, a Spicy Bacon Cheeseburger. Three sizes available, I chose the smaller 1/3 lb patty. It was dressed with jalapeno cheddar and jalapeno bacon, thru the garden (very fresh lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion), a bit of mayo and the best grilled beef patty I've had on a burger in awhile! This was all served on a grilled/toasted fresh bun with nice crispy edges. On the side were homemade chips that were also light and crispy and yet a nice softness to the centers and a pickle spear. My hubby chose the Brick Pattymelt served on fresh rye bread. Also with homemade chips and a pickle and says it was equally delicious! Not impressed. Prime rib was flavorless and a little tough. Waited 40 minutes to get the Cheese curd appetizer and they weren't fully cooked. My salad came 3 minutes before my meal. Soda is sold at $2 per can so if you want a refill it will cost you another $2. Most of the homemade chips were soggy. The bartender tried to pass off rail scotch as top shelf and then took it upon his self to pour me a double on the rocks and charged me $20. When question, he said that since it is the only scotch he serves, it's considered top shelf and he always pours a double without asking. $70 dollars was not worth it. We had gone to Madison the night before and had a wonderful meal of beef stroganoff and pork tenderloin at Buck & Honeys with several drinks and only paid $65. Apparently if you are not a regular local, they try to get the most out of you. They lost us as future customers and we only live 8 miles away. read more

Great cheese curds. Friendly people. My husband ordered the prime rib sandwich and loved it. I ordered the grilled cheeseburger and it was delicious. The bread and chips were awesome. I added mushrooms to the burger which I would do again. Owner is so nice. Definitely will be back!! And of course they have spotted cow which is the best beer ever!!! read more

So we first started with some cheese curds. OMFG!!! It's like a funnel cake and a cheese curds had kid......so amazing. I've never had cheese curds Luke that before. Horrible service, terrible atmosphere, perch taste like freezer burned garbage. Chicken tastes like fish that's been sitting out in the sun for 2 days, every time I eat their pizza I get stomache issues / diarrhea for 2 days afterward. Great place to go if you know the owner or don't plan on eating. Overpriced food, shit drinks, argumentative, disrespectful, negligent staff, bathrooms that rarely have paper towels to dry your hands, toilet / urinal that flushes if your lucky, and if you arent there 5 times a week, you will be the last served and have to go to the bar for service. I've been there multiple times, sat at a table, ordered appetizers then watch 4 other groups of people come in, order appetizers, drinks, and entres and we're served everything before I even got my appetizers which were not thoroughly cooked, cold and the last time I went there, all 3 of our parties entres were inedible terrible. Owner/Manager Jim is rude and disrespectful to staff, especially teenagers. Teenagers are young and need direction and support, not to be degraded and chastised. Let's build people up, not break them down. Horrible and completely unnecessary. We were just passing through town, but the owner directed us to the local cheese factory and the local candy shop that we were unaware about.
