I've come to find out that Fairbanks isn't rife with a lot of activity. I would think their main…read moredraw is the Aurora, which unfortunately was not active nor in season during our visit. That being said, it's nice to check out the ice museum and what it had to offer. Since o got the combo package of the ice museum combined with the aurora show, I'll separate them in the review. The ice museum part of it comes with a roughly 15 minute video that takes about ice sculpting; a little history so to speak. Similar to other reviewers, the video does leave a lot to be desired. The idea is fine, but execution is poor. The video is TERRIBLE quality. It's 2023... they could do better than 120p or 240p. It's actually kind of embarrassing really. So just power through that until they update it. Afterwards, you're escorted to the actual museum, which is an assortment of ice sculptures. I urge you to taper your expectations and you'll have a good time. It's not incredibly massive, but there is a decent amount. I liked Andy's (the ice sculptor) enthusiasm and you can tell there is passion in what he sculpts. He functions as a photographer if you want group/couple pictures. I particularly love toe slide since it's pretty fun to go down. Made me feel like a kid again. Also don't worry about not having a jacket as they definitely can provide you with one. It ends with actual demonstration of him sculpting in an observation room. It's really cool to see the process in action. Pretty cool (no pun intended). The Aurora show was unique in that it highlights the beautiful photography of Zimmerman combined with classical music. Don't worry the quality is a lot better (although not the best) than the ice sculpture video). It gives a short history of Zimmerman before showcasing his work. It is beautiful and showcases the aurora borealis in different forms.it is pretty mellow and calming, which could lead some to dozing off (I did a little), but definitely appreciated the art behind it. Overall, it's definitely something to do if you're in the city. I don't think it's too expensive, but many may not see the value. If you like ice sculptures, check this place out!

Gift shop looks like a garage sale. Stay away from here. From the locals, I hear the sculptures at local festivals are way better.

Inside, Alaskan aviation history is being preserved. The building is dome shaped and circular inside and a person can venture off in any direction and still end up seeing the whole display. There are entire small aircraft hanging from the ceiling or parked on the floor. You can sit in vintage airplane seats and watch a well preserved historical program on large screen T.V.s. The antique photographs, parts and pieces of wreckage and ancient engines inspire dreams of time travel. There are a few very unique armature built planes donated from local aviators, one of them used the pilots' seat as the gas tank to reduce weight. Some of the first wooden propellers ever made are on display and they are arranged so that a person can see how the technology evolve. The staff is bright and helpful; tours are available from knowledgeable guides and there is a small gift shop to help support the museum. I would recommend it to anyone who visits Pioneer Park.

This is a FREE museum that was recommended by our local rideshare driver and offers a bit of history of Alaska and dog sledding. Sure, it's small and a bit run down, but it's got character. My favorite was the "101 Things To Do in Fairbanks Alaska", which actually listed 101 things to do infused with some wit such as "complain about all the tourists asking about the northern lights ". I can't help but appreciate the locals' humor which I encountered throughout my visit to Fairbanks. It's located upstairs in the Co-op Plaza. Winter hours are limited from 11AM-3PM, so if you happen to be in the area during opening hours, please stop by. Did I mention it's free?

I love museums and wanted to learn more about the history behind Dog Mushing, so I decided to check it out. During the winter, the Fairbanks Community Museum is open daily from 11am until 3pm. Whereas, in the summer, the museum is open everyday from 11am to 5pm. Even though the museum is small, I discovered interesting facts about dog mushing. Before it became a sport, the indigenous people used dog sledding for their transportation. Dog mushing is also another term used for dog sledding and there are specific dog breeds and sled models that are suited for the sport. Other areas that stood out to me were the indigenous artifacts, photos of the Fairbanks community, and '101 Things To Do in Fairbanks, Alaska'. As a visitor of Fairbanks, the Community Museum may not have much to showcase, but is informative nonetheless.
