This is a beautiful little park, nestled in the heart of Novato perfect for a picnic or a stroll. My friend and I often visit to play tennis where we can find a court in the middle of the day without a wait. It's also got a historic cemetery on the hill, which is kind of neat. And there's a kids playground for the young ones. Parking is good at least on the weekdays with a big lot with wide spaces for all you giant truck lovers. read more

Really nice park that has been around since I was a kid. I took my daughter there they have a nice playground with a few slides. The lark is kept very clean. You can also bring your dog here. There were plenty of spots when u arrived early, but when u left people were waiting to park. read more

This is a lovely park for dog walking (on leash) - no fenced in dog park here. The park features several tennis courts, a gazebo, plentiful picnic tables, a childrens' playground. It's quite beautiful. Easy walking paths for seniors and lots of benches. Easy parking. EXCEPT.... The womens' bathroom was not just filthy, it was gross beyond belief. Water flooded the handicapped stall; all three toilets were full of you know what; either stopped up or people didn't flush. Wet papers covered the floor. No paper towels. Where's the Health Department or Park Maintenance? The park is also heavily littered, especially around the benches by the tennis courts. One reason might be the total lack of garbage cans; found only one inside a tennis court. Lots of recycle cans but no trash ones. As a result, some people just toss their trash on the ground. Someone needs to maintain this lovely park - as it stands as of May, 2021, it's pretty disgusting. read more

This is a great park for kids. The play structure is big enough with a variety of play things (slides, ladders, climbing wall, little tables and chairs) to keep a lot of kids busy at the same time with out ever seeming really crowded. The cool play fixture in the sand box is getting a little old and worn out , but my six year old doesn't seem to notice! There are separate play areas for toddlers and for big kids with seating, a drinking fountain and the sand box in between. The big lawns have plenty of space for a game of catch or a picnic. We really miss the old rock fountain that stood dry, but still fun to climb around in, for many years. I'm hoping there are plans for another water feature since it can get pretty hot. One special feature about pioneer park is the restrooms. That's right, a park with restrooms! They are well maintained and I have found them to be tolerably clean when ever we've needed them. My favorite feature with out a doubt is that this park has an old cemetery with in it. These are the graves of some of the oldest citizens of Novato. I love walking with my son looking at the grave stones, the years and names and talking to him about respect for the graves and for our history. The cemetery section of the park is a beautiful shading spot that seems completely separate from the rest of the park when you are in it. read more

We stopped here on a whim and it was a total hit with my four-year-old. Loads of slides, swings and other fun play equipment. Two major sections, one for older kids, the other for under five. There were two birthday parties going on which seemed a little crazy but the park is large enough. I enjoyed checking out the pretty creek on the far end of the park and the old cemetery. One down side - very little shade so pack up the SPF. We forgot some and had to borrow from a nice family. read more

Not your average public tennis courts! These courts have excellent playing surface, great nets, and protected from the wind. The free lights are perfect for playing at night and it's often dry here whilst damp and drizzly everywhere else. Only downsides are you'll walk about 50 yds from the carpark to the 4 courts, and may have to wait a while for a court to open up. Great tennis players like to play here! read more

Lovely park. Nice size playground area. My four year old son and I came here on Labor Day 2013. Not too crowded. Very spacious with shade and benches to sit and watch. I like how the play area is in a corner with benches around... It keeps it a little secluded. We didn't have too much time to explore, but there is a lot of grass with a a paved walking trail. I overheard they had nice tennis courts. It was a nice little find for a park in Novato. read more

I wish someone would post info or the Park and Rec would put info regarding the tennis courts being closed and when they are opening again? They have been closed for over a month and there is no way to tell they are closed until you walk a great distance from the parking lot to see for yourself. Finally, it would be nice to know about ALL planned upgrades and maintenance regarding the numerous parks and playground in Novato. Note to CITY: It is 2014 and people need up to date info on their public space. Having a canned description of each place and nothing more is a bit lazy on your part City of Novato! read more

I remember coming to this park a lot when I was a we lad. It has a playground for the kids and a tennis court. BBQ grills or you can bring your own. Really small park but nice to spend time with family and friends. Parking is small and get full quick. For more parking the closest is to drive around to find a spot. read more

Just went once to watch my nephew ride his bike around the paths. It was Friday so there were very few people and most were in the playground area so he had plenty of space to practice riding. The area looked well maintained and no complaints when nana went to the restroom. The walk through the cemetery was very peaceful and interesting to think about the people who lived here long ago. read more

This is a very large park and it's of course busiest on the weekends. It is being very well utilized by our Latino population who come here and use it for big parties. There are BBQs for public use. There are also four tennis courts. The play ground is fairly elaborate and well made. read more

This is a nice park for a weekend picnic, to take a walk, to play some volleyball, hit some tennis balls or just to lay around in the grass. It is relatively big, clean and also has a playground for children. There is a hill overlooking the park that used to be an old cemetery which you might find creepy or interesting or both. The main reason I go to this park is to play some tennis. There are four hardcourts that have recently (few months old) renovated and are of good quality. The surface is good and isn't too fast so you can play some long rallyes. The location has the distinct advantage of being a sunny spot that is well-shielded from the wind. Perfect weather conditions for tennis. The courts have lights that come on only after 4 or 5 pm... if you don't see the lights wait until 4 or 5 and they will start working. The lights are bright and are quite good, much better than the average lighted public tennis court. The only downside is that the courts are often busy. In that case you can try going to Novato High School tennis courts or the San Marin High School courts but these don't have lights and have little protection from the wind. All in all a nice high quality park! read more

Wonderful park for younger kids. Lots of play structures and swings for the younger crowd. Warning though, in the hot sun, the playground has zero shade and the structures are very hot, too hot to really play on for the little ones. I have never found a great playground in Marin for the kids to old for the little kids structures but still young enough to enjoy playgrounds. If you find it, please share. read more

[sigh] this park is ok. The double entrance is a bit frazzling as a parent as it's too easy for your kids to get away from you, but... What's with the gunshots every other night? The Novato police clearly have their Nazi on, so why isn't this park screwed down tight? read more

This park has different areas to offer depending on why you want to head to the park. You have the playground for the kids to play, scream and interact with other kids. There are huge grassy areas where you can bring some kind of ball or a frisbee to toss around to play games, scream and interact with others. Various park tables and benches to eat at, have a party or play games, scream and interact with others at. There is a public tennis court, so bring a racquet and balls if you are into that. You can even bring your dog! But be advised not everyone is as kind as you and I so there is dog poo on the ground here and there. SO BE AWARE! Also during the summer time there are times when the flies can be a little irritating especially near the covered tables by the playground. There are plenty of lovely paths to lollygag. But be advised if you have trouble with uneven ground then this might not be for you. There is also a nice little adventure down by the creek if you are into that, watch the kids you know how they "accidentally" get wet. My one big issue is I find the parking lot challenging. It is not very big when busy and can quickly become an accident zone waiting to happen. There is also parking on the street. However those with young children, the street can be a little hairy.
