Treating your customers like criminals before they even enter the store is an awful business plan. I had my AirPods in and walked into the store when the "security guard" rudely got my attention and demanded I remove my backpack and leave it there. I'm wearing a 400$ jacket and usually shop at Whole Foods or the bushwick key foods, by no means was I going to steal anything. Meanwhile people are walking around with backpacks inside the store so they are obviously being selective. Just a major turn off. Not to mention everything in this store is essentially ten dollars, they are incredibly overpriced, check out key foods down the street for better service and lack of bother. I usually can never find what I need in the store, but this visit was quite the pleasant surprise. They had a great deal on leg quarters free cut in pieces to make stews, soups or curry chicken. I also was able to find oat milk ice cream, non dairy whipped cream, with pretty good selection. The produce was OK, a little pricey. The area that didn't improve was the staff. It really goes to show you how perception is based on what one is used to. I was pretty pleased with Pioneer Supermarket so I am a bit confused as to the low ratings. Thankfully I didn't get sexually harassed, my produce seems fresh, and I've been in much much narrower aisles. This place was like the SIstine Chapel of hood supermarkets; they had organic, piping hot foods, a deli, stocked shelves and flipping Waygu beef! This is not a neighborhood corner store turned market, it actually has quite a few wares. Now that I think about it I'm kicking myself for not getting that Oreo cake they were showing off, smh. I was way too excited when I saw that they offered tacos, rotisserie chicken, chicarrones and rice....you can grab a sandwich to go or get a plate of yummyness, what's the problem? I have been to postage stamp places that seemed to have a max occupancy of 5 people, you can forget about a shopping cart or even turning around but in here I can just about stretch my arms out. They need to train their staff about customer service, the check-out girls are nice but the male staff act rude and creepy to the women customers. One man who works outside at the door walked up deliberately to start bagging my groceries when I told him that's okay I don't need it, and he kept whispering close to me "what's your name, what's your name?" It's either that or getting snarled at like you are a criminal for wanting to keep your valuables with you. You can just as easily check my bag on the way out, but I'm not taking my valuables off my person. I get that you have a bag policy, but snapping and treating people rudely is a sure way to never get my business again. C-Town down the street never gives me trouble about bags, is more spacious and the male staff leave us alone to peacefully shop. read more

This supermarket is good to make a quick run. If you need an ingredient or something for a quick bite. I would not shop here to stock my fridge because items and brands that I typically buy are not sold here. If the freezer section/processed microwave foods is how you survive .... this is the market for you. The latest t.v dinners are here and on sale. I see hostess snacks I haven't seen in years. It's a super market, people. You need groceries? They've got it. If you know exactly what you need and where the items are, you'll be in and out of there shortly. However, if you're unfamiliar with the store, some items might be difficult to find. For instance, the spices are in the freezer aisle. Their fruits and veggies can be a hit or miss. They've got a decent aisle of organic produce, and there's always a sale. During peak hours, it's an obstacle to get around people and their shopping carts because the aisles are narrow. This grocery sucks. & for the girl who said that it's the neighborhood gentrifiers who don't like the selection, I disagree. I'm a black man from Crown Heights, born in ghetto ass Kings County Hospital, and guess what? I like organic meats! But you'll have an easier time finding Waldo than you do finding organic meat, fruit, & veggie options at this store. If you're less picky about your food options then you probably won't have too much of a problem here. Pro: They always keep the store stocked. Con: There is always an employee stocking things in the aisle or rolling a freight cart around acting like you're in THEIR way. Pro: Hot bar. Pro: Good international aisle. All of the bad reviews are from the new gentrified influx in the neighborhood. These people want their Chelsea and Williamsburg conveniences right away. So lame. Bushwick has been a Caribbean centered community for decades now, and Pioneer, a great family owned chain, has had mostly items that cater to the needs of the community. They ALWAYS have an amazing sale, and are actually working rapidly to supply these new folks in the neighborhood with their chia seed needs. The meat section needs some work, but I can tell they are improving because they now carry ground turkey. The produce is decent, and actually much cheaper than the fruit market a block down, who's produce is always on it's last leg. Pioneer had whole Dole pineapples on sale today, 2/$6. That's great. Overpriced. Ramshackle. Terrible customer service. Won't let you bring reusable bags into the store - not environmentally friendly. Why would I want to walk out of a store with two handfuls of plastic bags when I've brought my own?! If they're concerned about theft, they could just as easily check receipts at the door. Unfortunately, there aren't any good alternatives in the area, so they have the market partially cornered -- this hood is a produce desert. Went there this morning to get a 9V battery for my smoke detector, when I got home and put it in it didn't stop beeping. So I naturally thought I put it in wrong. When my landlord came to check on it, I found out that the battery was expired. Triple check anything you buy from this store to make sure it's not expired. They clearly don't routinely check the dates on their products. As for me, they'll never get another dollar from me again. Don't give your money to a place that sells people bad products. read more

The absolute worst place I have ever shopped. As a black person I know when I'm being paranoid and when someone is a racist--do NOT shop here if you are black. The cashier must have forgotten to bag a 99 CENT CAN OF CORN and instead of giving me another can they made me wait 15 minutes to pull the store tapes and then claim everything was bagged as it was not. I have no intention to steal A CHEAP CAN OF CORN but because of my race I felt as if I was being labeled as a thief and a liar. I returned once since and got FOOD POISONING from their EXPIRED deli sandwiches. Do NOT SHOP HERE. Two disgusting male employees followed me around while checking out my ass after I saw one of them watching me for minutes on end while I was browsing through the vegetables. When I told the cashiers who were standing around while I checked out, one of them pointed to the male manager who was standing right next to us. I can't imagine how he did not hear my complaint, but he looked at his phone as if he had not heard my (loud) complaint when they called his attention and asked if he heard. The staff and supervisor refused to sell me a bunch of kombucha tea, claiming it had alcohol. I've already tried to inform them that Kombucha tea doesn't have alcohol, but is fermented. However, they entirely dismissed me and I had to take my business elsewhere :(. I suspect this might happen to a lot of people. I could buy the same kombucha from another local store or whatnot, but i'm loyal to pioneer. The kombucha tea's I tried to purchase were "Pineapple Peach Kevita". read more

This is my favorite supermarket in the area. The produce is always fresh and lovely. You can tell that they really try to service the needs of everyone in this highly diverse neighborhood. For example, they have meats and vegetables which are common to the Caribbean community, but which are admittedly exotic to me. However, they also have more and more organic items scattered throughout the store, including the Organic Girl prewashed salad greens, some select raw cheeses, and whole organic chickens at better prices than Trader Joe's. One anomaly which I find endearing, altho a little frustrating, is that they do not carry candy of any kind. A matter of principle apparently. The many children around here are raised well LOL. And so my search for good chocolate in the hood continues... They also have free parking and free delivery when you buy $50 or more. If you get delivery, they will give you a ride home in the van with your groceries, but you might have to wait a half hour or so. The fresh limes are almost always crazy cheap, like about 10-20 cents each. Yay! Some things are a little pricey, but overall it's a great store. Oh and there is an entire aisle of spice mixes, like Jamaican and other curries, that are just ever so fun. The meat is always fresh and there's usually at least one cut on sale for a great price. Very minimal on fresh fish, but there's lots of salt cured cod. Other basics like paper goods are generally here. read more

I frequent this store every week to by the typical things.. toilet paper, juices, eggs, milk etc. The produce section is ok for the most part but sometimes it is not. The meat section is a no for me.. everything looks very skeptical.. customer service sucks except for the gentlemen who checks bags, he is always friendly.
