The Pirates Treasure Chest is a public art installation just north of the Great Lawn on Pompano…read moreBeach. It is located behind Sandbar Snacks where you enter the beach. In 2012 the Pompano Beach city commission adopted an ordinance to put art on public property around the city. I love this program. It is always so much fun to find a new piece of art popping up somewhere in the city. Pirates Treasure Chest is part of this public art program. Pirates Treasure Chest was commissioned from Florida artist Donald Gialanella who designed, created, and installed the giant sculpture. The 6 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet treasure chest is made of anodized aluminum. The sculpture cost $35,000 and was approved under the fiscal plan of 2018. This sculpture is to be the first piece of art work in the Underwater Sculpture Garden program which was started by the public art committee in 2018. Every two years until 2025 a new sculpture will be created by a different artist. In total 4 sculptures will be made. The sculpture will be on display for one year. After that it will be attached to Lady Luck, a 324 tanker vessel that was sunk off the coast to create an artificial reef. The Lady Luck is the centerpiece of Shipwreck Park which is made up of 16 other wrecks. Periodically art pieces are added to the park to attract divers. The Lady Luck has three large sea life collages by artist Dennis MacDonald. The purpose of Shipwreck Park is to raise awareness of coral reefs and to protect them. I love that Pompano is giving strong support to the arts. This art piece pays homage to Florida's Spanish seafaring past. The sculpture is whimsical yet detailed. Upon closer inspection the treasure is designed to look like Spanish gold bars and doubloons. While the design has strong ties to our past it also has an important message about our future and how we need to protect our coral reefs. So hurry over and get your picture with it while you can.
