My husband and I stopped by the dining room to get a bite to eat. We were handed our menu's and no one ever came back to get our drink order or our food order. One girl came out and looked at us, then disappeared. The other girl was getting her tips from a table that were getting ready to leave. There was no one else in the dining room. We got up and left after 20 minutes. As we were leaving, one of the cooks went to the dumpster outside and came back licking his fingers. I could only hope he washed his hands. We came at the tail end of summer season, right before labor day weekend. I was disappointed that I booked my zipline activity in July and they called me 3 hours before my time to cancel. That was our reason for traveling to this part of the state. I will say the sunset views are incredible. Lodge was a little outdated, but that is part of the charm. Nature center was closed. It's a lodge in the middle of a state park. According to signs, construction started in the 1960s and opened in 1970. It's almost like a 50 year old time capsule. Please don't go in expecting a 4 start hotel. The rooms are small and very simple. There's a restaurant on one side and a snack place kind of in the middle that serves food like chicken wings. The views are great. You have to catch a sunset on their deck. The staff is friendly. Theres also some hiking trails nearby. read more

Pipestem, named for plants that resemble pipe-stems, has an almost retro feel, like taking a step into what a vacation in the 70's may have been like. There are two lodges, one only accessible by Air Tram, a few restaurants, a golf course, trails, an observation tower, and... an adventure park! There's also a spa, which I don't think I've seen at any other state park yet! This must be quite a sight to see during peak season, but I showed up in a quieter time two weeks after Labor Day, which was lovely in its own right. The Air Tram was just reopened this year, and the cars are new and improved! The ride isn't terribly long, and you take a scenic ride to the river. There are a couple trails down at the base, and several folks were fishing. The gift shops are well stocked, the restaurant had decent food and a rather nice view! read more

No AC in dining room but you can place a to go order... issues they don't answer their phone and the elevator is down. They could have handled this situation better . So surprising that I grew up in WV but never made it to Pipestem. My husband and I had a nice parents only weekend while here for our friend's wedding. Accommodations and food at the main lodge could definitely use some upgrading but they have a secondary lodge we didn't get to see due to construction, cabins, and camping also as options. We really enjoyed the scenery in this area of the state, the abundance of activities available for all ages, and getting to learn about the area during a special event they had one night for a strawberry moon hike. I'd definitely come back here! read more

The views are incredible and the staff are warm and accommodating, however, the restaurant service left much to be desired. While we were a larger party, staying here for a family reunion, we never received our food within an hour of ordering it (on the last night with no one else in the restaurant, we waited 2 hours). The wait times were unfortunately unacceptable. When looking for a vacation with a significantly larger party, would recommend elsewhere! read more

My family has done the zipline tour at Pipestem twice now, and it's been an incredible experience both times. Even if you're not into the adventures, the resort itself is also beautiful and definitely worth a visit - it has some of my favorite views in WV. The zipline package is 3 hours and has 9 zips, some of which are 1,000+ ft. long and ~300 ft. high. The last 3 go directly over the New River Gorge, though the views are amazing throughout (bonus points if you go during fall - our guide said the first 2 weeks of October are the best for foliage). The whole experience feels very safe and secure. Our 2 guides, Megan and Samuel, were so friendly and professional. They definitely completed the experience for us. Our guides 2 years ago were also very kind and fun - service never fails at Pipestem. At the end of the tour, you repel down a tree and take an aerial tram (included in the package) back up to the starting point. The tram ride also has amazing views. Pipestem is one of my favorite resorts in WV - definitely check it out, even if it's just a quick stop! read more

We only stayed one night, but it was a great place to stay. The staff was so nice. The rooms were nice, clean, and comfortable. There was a pool, game room and nice outdoor area. The restaurant inside had a great breakfast buffet. When I come back to West Virginia I will definitely be staying here. read more

We visited West Virginia with a few friends for Memorial Day weekend and were so excited to go ziplining! We did not stay at the park and drove in from Hinton. Ziplining was incredible but we did run into a mishap. I appreciated the fact that we got a reminder email, but in the email there was not a direct address. "CHECK IN IS LOCATED AT THE CANYON RIM CENTER, TURN LEFT AT PARK HEADQUARTERS FROM THE MAIN PARK ROAD" per the email. As out-of-towners we are not familiar with the area and mapped "Canyon Rim Center" (also stated on their website) and boy were we in for a surprise. Our map took us to Fayetteville, about an hour away from Pipestem, to Canyon Rim Visitor Center. Do not map it to this location. The zipline is directly in Pipestem park. Despite the address being on the website, it may be helpful for the park to include an address in the reminder email as to not create confusion- even the park ranger in Fayetteville said they got confused customers frequently who were supposed to also be ziplining in Pipestem. We then called the park and were transferred to a few people and also reached out to the manager who had emailed us. The manager, Eli, spoke with us and was incredibly accommodating, on his day off nonetheless, and said they could fit us in for an afternoon zip- thank you Eli. We did get some differing information in the meantime- they wouldn't be able to accommodate and we wouldn't be able to get a refund- but in the end we did end up ziplining. From the moment we got on-site, the whole experience was incredible. Megan was gracious and her customer service is impeccable. Jules and Bryan were our guides and they were incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and fun! The zipline was on the forefront of safety which I appreciated for my first time. The views were immaculate and it was well worth the little bit of stress in the beginning. read more

All questions answered, every step explained well, no rushing. 10/10 would recommend these two as your next guides. The ONLY recommendation we would have for Pipestem Adventures would be possibly walking trail (to and in between the landings) improvements (maybe a little wider cut or better prepped). They were navigational but would help some of us less agile individuals to feel even safer. read more

A beautiful state Park located just down the road from Athens WVa in Summers County. The park is a 4000 acre park with all the wonderful fun things you would ever want to do. Horseback riding, camping, fishing, swimming, Hicking, golf, and walking trails all there to enjoy. A tram ride to the bottom of the Bluestone River Gorge will be one of many fun things to do. There's a hotel lodge with many rooms with spectacular views of the blue ridge mountains. There's cottage rentals as well for more private camping. There are also camping sites if outdoors camping is your thing. An outdoor amphitheater to enjoy and swimming in the rivers are just a few of the many activities available. It's truly an amazing park just 3 1/2 hours from Charlotte. The food in the dining room at the hotel is delicious. We absolutely loved our visit to the park and plan to go back soon. Wonderful, back to nature experience here! We stayed at the Mountain Creek Lodge (which requires a tram to get to/from the main park/lodge). Peaceful, quite and there is a great restaurant located here. The rooms are a bit dated but very clean and All room have a small refrigerator and microwave. The grounds also have picnic tables and grills. The only reason not to give it five stars is the following: 1) The Mountain Creak restaurant is only open for dinner, so you won't be able to get breakfast or lunch here- you will need to go up to the main lodge. 2) When we were here the tram started running at 8am, -this may be due to short staffing and Covid as it seems the regular start time is 6am (so any early risers who want to go up to the main lodge for breakfast- you will need to wait til 8am). Overall a great time here if you want a quite, back to nature experience! read more

Stayed here for a professional conference. It's unseasonably warm - 75° in February - and our room was on the top floor. When we got to our room, it was very hot and stuffy, and the thermostat in our room didn't seem to be working. So we went to the front desk to see if someone could check it out, and we were told that they are "on a boiler system" and "weren't on A/C mode yet". When we asked how we could cool the room, we were told to open the window and that they would bring us some fans. That was fine(ish) during the day, mostly because we weren't in the room much during the day, but unfortunately, our room also overlooked the parking lot and a workout room. So our options were to (a) have our window open with zero privacy and bright parking lot lights shining into our room all night or (b) roast. Needless to say, it's been a super uncomfortable stay. In fact, I'm writing this at 3 am because I can't sleep due to how hot it is in the room (even with a fan in the window, which means there are also bright lights shining into our room ). Luckily, we only have to stay one night. I will say that the front desk staff are very friendly and tried to help as much as possible with limited resources. But... whoever owns the place needs to consider an update to a more modern heating/cooling system because THIS SUCKS. Edit to add: There was no hot water for showers the next morning. read more

I've rented a hotel room at Pipestem several times since the spring. The very first week I rented, I happened to get a very freshly remodeled room overlooking the gorge on the 7th floor. Between the fabulous room, the great restaurant, and the feel of the lodge, I would have given it 6 stars on a scale of 1-5. Then the next week I stayed, I was over on the sixth floor on the side. Half the bathroom lights were burned out, the flourescent light around the mirror was half lit and buzzing, and the carpet was all stained like a one star hotel. So I was disappointed, but the restaurant is great, and I had a great hike to the river and back, and I love sitting on the deck at sunset. Then the last time I stayed there a couple of weeks ago, we were in a "pet friendly" room. As soon as we entered the room, it really stank. What we found was, not only was the toilet literally leaking yellow foul water all around the base from a broken wax seal, but then at night when the curtains were drawn, we looked up and literally counted SEVENTY active mold spots on the wooden ceiling. Thats right; SEVENTY. I was disappointed to say the least. But I knew they were sold out and with a small dog on a Saturday evening, I wasn't about to start driving the countryside, looking for an available hotel room that accepted pets. So we lived with that disgusting filth. And the room felt extremely damp. This was the second floor on the side. This was literally the worst hotel experience I've ever had since I've stayed at hotels in about 45 years. The ONLY reason I give it 2 stars instead of one is because of the view and the restaurant, the lake and the trails. read more

We had a lot of fun, but you need to lower your expectations on certain things. - Check In - We booked with a discount (something like book three nights and get the fourth free). When we got there, we were told there was no record of the discount and they couldn't help me. They then gave me a number to call that nobody answered (just kept going in a circle). I went to the front desk and was told they would have someone call me back. Nobody called me back. - Food - The kitchen was short staffed and the only option was a buffet for all meals during the week. During the weekend, there was a pizza and wing option. All food service stops at 9 PM. There is a bar area by the restaurant, but it's only open certain days. If you go outside the park, Athens has a couple of restaurants but is probably about 20 minutes away (shorter if you're accustomed to windy roads). Other places with choices require further travel. - Activities - We loved all the outdoor activities (golf, archery, horseback riding, skeet, mini-golf, swimming, nature center lessons, etc.). It's a great place for kids to try a lot of different things. The Par 3 course is awesome. Do: o Have a food plan before you go. We couldn't take the buffet every meal, so we brought breakfast and tried to figure out a way to manage lunch. o Call ahead and see if there are any events scheduled that might affect your plans. They had a youth golf tournament for a couple of days that affected tee times and an archery event that closed many of the outdoor activities. Have a Plan B. o Be patient, a lot of the activities at the park are run by outside vendors and it may require some asking around to get questions answered. The arcade is run by an outside vendor, not everything works. Don't: o Get upset with the staff. They are wonderful, and just about every position is short staffed. The problems you have, the people on the front lines probably can't fix. o Think you're going to hike down the canyon and the gondola back up. The gondola only operates certain days of the week. read more

We really enjoyed our stay in the lodge. It was the off-season so the tram was closed. I want to come back in the summer to check it out. Staff were all super friendly, and the food in the restaurant was surprisingly good. Beautiful area with tons of wildlife, practically tripped over deer anywhere you turned. Building is a little dated, but that was part of the charm. Not so great was being able to hear other rooms and the hallway from inside your room but it wasn't terrible. Lots of folks there on Valentine's weekend who seemed like this had been their tradition for years. We had our 3 year old daughter with us and some anonymous patron in the restaurant covered our breakfast for us. Never had that happen before, I was very touched. read more

If Yelp had 25 stars available, Pipestem State Park would have very one! I used to come here with my family when I was a kid. My grandmother lived in Lerona.5 min away. I took a solo journey here and had the best time. I came in on a Thursday at 4pm. I first went to the observatory and caught a nice breeze. The view is fabulous. I then found a vacant tent site in the campground inside the park! I should add that business because it's a whole different review! (Great Campground) Pipestem has horse stables for scheduled rides. They were so pretty. Probably about 15 I saw. They also had A full golf course and frisbee golf. A water park and archery. I saw a number of different playgrounds on site also. The Tramway is a great experience. You get in a cart that hangs from cables and it takes you down into the lodge area. It's a MUST do. Lots of things to do down there also including some good fly fishing. Of course the hiking trails were great!! I found the cliffs..but I got there so early in the morning, all I could see was fog. But..its the same view from the tram anyway....drive around and look at the whole park. Lots of overlooks. This is a must go place to chill!!! read more

First of all, let me say that Pipestem State Park is a beautiful place and there is plenty to do there. That is the only reason that I have given 2 stars. That being said, my issue was with the McKeever Lodge and the lack of management in said lodge. Upon booking, I was not told the lodge was under major renovations (which it needs desperately) and many amenities were either closed or available at a diminished capacity. The issue was a smoke alarm in my room that went off at 3:30 AM and continued for over an hour. There was no smoke, there were no issues, and THERE WERE NO EMPLOYEES WORKING to turn the damn thing off! I had to call 911 and wait 30 minutes for them to send a Fire Truck to get the alarm turned off. There simply was no body manning the front desk, no maintenance workers, no housekeepers, the place was deserted. The lights were literally on but nobody was home! Upon finally returning to my room somewhere close to 4:45 AM there was also no sleep! Upon checking out, I advised that my room was where the alarm went off and could they do anything about the bill. The desk clerk was very apologetic and empathetic but had to check with her manager to be able to comp anything. I was late for an appointment and when she finally returned, I was offered a cursory discount for the room and another apology. As I did not have time to dispute the charge, I left somewhat bewildered at how a manager could not issue a comp for the room and a promise that they would strive to make my next stay better! With the lack of concern afforded a paying guest, I WILL NOT be returning to Pipestem and I would suggest that if you do...CAVEAT EMPTOR! They apparently don't have much regard for their guests nor their comfort. read more

First of all, let me say that despite the 4-star review vs. 5, I love love love Pipestem. I've been going there since 1996, including on my honeymoon, and family trips summers since 2008 except during the pandemic. I've regularly done all the stuff that isn't brand new: hiking, horseback riding, the tram, swimming, the game room, archery, Sweet Treats, foot golf, and so on. This year, again, the staff was friendly and very accommodating, and the food was great (though more on that in a bit). We went again a few weeks ago and again I loved the trip overall, with only one large exception that I wouldn't bother mentioning in most circumstances except for the local / state connection: the gift shops are only a shade of what they used to be. This may seem like a silly thing to ding a star over, and this is more geared at Pipestem's management rather than visitors, but the great thing about Pipestem's gift shops were how tied in they were to West Virginia and the state's culture, along with the variety of specific Pipestem-related items. For instance, the biggest disappointment was that the Artisan Craft Shop on the bottom floor of Canyon Rim was closed - I hope just due to renovations, not permanently. For those not familiar with it, there were all kinds of West Virginia handcrafted and other related items like leather belts and hats, miniature log cabins, jewelry, WV books (including lots of history), even dulcimers and flutes. The few such items they were selling upstairs this summer don't replace it by any means. And the upstairs at Canyon Rim seemed vastly empty compared to years past, with just a fraction of the items they used to have that packed the place, including only a handful of clothes, and some things gone entirely like the dessert case and back issues of Wonderful West Virginia magazine. Many of the more unique items were gone from the McKeever gift shop too, even little things like the animals and other statuettes made from coal. Their clothing selection was also much reduced, and in both places almost the only clothing available in my size (2-3X) weren't for Pipestem or West Virginia in general, but the fishing-themed "West Virginia Gold Rush". (All that said, I'm a rock hound and did enjoy the new rock shop in McKeever, plus keeping the rock shop at Canyon Rim, both of which I poured over multiple times. And thank you for still having Pipestem and WV postcards!) Food: Again, I'll say first that dinner now at the Bluestone Dining Room (which I did two nights) was great. Very good item off the menu, and the buffet was absolutely fantastic. Just two qualms: There were no shades on the windows this time, so eating at sunset meant some of our party were constantly blinded by the sun. And the second is because I'm a barbarian: while the food I had was wonderful, I do miss that sometimes you could just get yourself something basic there like fried chicken or spaghetti. I didn't do the Bluestone's breakfast buffet this time, unusually, but the family members who did said it was awesome. The snack bar has been hit and miss over the years. On my last trip, in July 2019, the pizza was great. This time not so much - the sauce was mostly tasteless and the crust almost had the consistency of cardboard. (That said, thank you for offering gluten free crust - we have a family member who is deathly allergic to wheat but loves pizza.) OK, complaining done. I'll finish by saying that Pipestem is my and my family's all-time favorite mountain retreat (and the kids recently admitted that they like it better than Florida!), a place where we all can completely relax, and where summer doesn't seem complete without going. If you've never been to Pipestem, give it a try. Despite every gripe I said above I'll still move Heaven and Earth to get back next summer too. read more

We camped here with our RV. Their website says the tram is open until October 31st, but it wasn't. The RV campsites here are more on the expensive side compared to other state parks campsites. We paid for dump, but when we got there, there were signs stating that their dump site was not available. When we asked at the check in desk, we were told to go to another park 3 miles away and pay $10 for dumping, it's not too bad, but it was supposed to be included on the price we had already paid. There are a lot of activities during the summer. Other than that, it's a beautiful park during the fall. read more

Bailey and Matlock were our guides and they were awesome. They helped us with all our questions and were fun to be around. They did a good job equiping us and explaining to us exactly what was going to happen. During the ziplining they were very professional and helpful. After the trip was over we were brought back up the canyon by a tram that had wonderful views. I would highly recommend this company. read more

Review #300 and so much to say about Pipestem so I hope you enjoy. Decided to go epic here... Pipestem is a West Virginia state park in a VERY out of the way location. It was a solid (and scenic) 6.5 hour drive from central Indiana. The last time I was here was probably 1983 and we decided to make a visit with my daughter after all these years. Our visit was a very mild couple of days in mid October. Directions from the interstate are pretty clear and zero problem finding the park. What is striking to me is how IMMACULATE the park is maintained. I mean off the charts clean and unlike any state park I have been to. Roads are in tip top shape, fences, green spaces mowed, etc. Add to that the natural beauty of southern West Virginia and you have a gem. Pulling up the lodge we finally found a spot (found out later the West Virginia DNR was having a convention). The lodge is nice from the outside but the lobby really is stuck in time. The lobby has a spectacular view of the mountains. The first night we stayed was at the Mountain Creek lodge, second at McKeever. I will come back to the lodge later in the review...stay tuned for that. Prior to heading to Mountain Creek, we had an hour horseback ride which was a ton of fun. There are a lot of horses and since we were at the end of the season we were the only ones on the trail. Brandon was cool...nice local kid who was personable. So onto Mountain Creek lodge which is only accessible by tram! Exceptionally cool...you park your vehicle at the top of the mountain and take your luggage in the tram. Down the mountain to 30 rooms located next to the Bluestone River. Absolutely beautiful at the bottom next to the river. And the tram stops at 10pm...so you tuck in for the night and don't come up till morning. I mentioned before that McKeever was stuck in time...well the Mountain Creek lodge is no different. It isn't BAD...just dated! It really looked like the pictures from 1983. Wireless access was very bad at the far end of rooms. There is a nice restaurant at the bottom which we didn't eat at. Below that is a very lonely group of rooms...you know when Joe Pesci was knocked off in Goodfellas? It looked exactly like that. Waking up in the AM when the fog was still breaking in the gorge? It was worth the cost of staying all by itself. We went for a trail walk along the river after our breakfast to listen and enjoy the sounds of nature and the river. For the second day we planned some more trail walks, swimming, and scenic stuff. We spent an hour at the nature center watching a documentary on deer (and Pipestem is lousy with deer). They aren't scared of people and we could get within 10 feet of them...crazy. Went to Long Lake...paddleboating! They also had kayaking...quite the hike to the lake. Checking into McKeever on day 2 was really the low part of our trip. The rooms are dated horribly. The room we had faced west and it was nearly 75 degrees and sunny. We got to the room and the flipping HEAT was on! The thermostat controls did NOT turn on any air (air is not per room it is central). I went to the front desk and asking for maintenance but we could not bring the temp in the room down...absolutely stifling. The front desk originally said they didn't have a room but I complained long enough that I got one. Turned out it faced the gorge which was nicer. We had dinner one night in the restaraunt which was dated terribly. It felt like the entire lodge was under construction...the pool area was open but all torn up. 8 foot section in the pool which was nice. So the verdict is...there is so much to do here to get away from the daily grind. The park is exceptional, the beauty is unparalleled, and the selection of activities are great. If come here again though, I would not stay at McKeever lodge (I might stay at Mountain Creek). It is in need of updates and it isn't stepping back in time in a good way. West Virginia...you should be proud of your park. read more

Our visit to Pipestem (and corresponding stay at this lodge) had my group thinking that West Virginia was perhaps the friendliest state in the nation. First, splurge for a "Gorge View" room. The difference is minimal for gorgeous (gorge-ous, haha!) view. We spent a lot of time on the balcony staring down in disbelief at the blossoming trees and green, green valley below. We spent our time there participating in Irish Road Bowling (Check the website for the annual competition! All are welcome; my team came in last and we still had a great time), following the many trails down to the lake, and sitting on the deck watching deer in the meadow. On the last night, there was a square dancing conference in one of the ballrooms. We sat and watched for awhile (it's way more complex than what you learning in gym class in Fourth Grade!), and soon they invited us to join them. Awesome. All activities that weekend were free. This resort has one of the most incredible reviews when you walk in lobby! You overlook the West Virginia Mountains from the very top of the mountain. It is breathtaking! My husband & I went zip lining at their newly opened Pipestem Adventures and when I tell you the views were unlike any other I mean it! The best zip long course on the East Coast by far! You go from cliff top to cliff top over rivers and through the forests! 14075ft is the longest one which you go from one cliff top to another crossing the river from incredible heights! People kayaking below looked like ants! I've never seen such amazing views! Don't skip out on this I guarantee you will be so happy you did it! read more

The park has allot to offer. Stayed in a cabin for two nights and had a great time. The cabins have cable tv, free wifi, plenty of parking, recycling, cutlery and plates etc, central heating and cooling. You can easily walk to the resort and access the bar and the restaurant there. A couple of restaurants are within a 5-10 minute drive. Princeton is also close by. Would definitely love to return here again. Climbing up to the lookout tower is worth it also! read more

I never write reviews, but this was such an amazing and memorable experience, I had to share the highlight of our Pipestem trip. We had Baylee, Megan, and Cory as our zipline guides and they were nothing short of fantastic. I am pretty uncoordinated and managed to get stuck twice on the course, but both times I was quickly helped out; the guides make this course easy for all experience levels. Our guides did a great job explaining how their course worked and always prioritized everyone's safety. The guides were super fun to talk to in between zips and kept everyone in the group laughing. The course itself is beautiful and allows you to appreciate the full beauty of Pipestem. The best zipline is #7 with one-of-a kind views of the scenic Bluestone River (I really got to appreciate these views because of where I got stuck on the zipline and was super grateful to have the extra time to grab some photos). I have been to several different ropes/zip courses but this one was by far the most special: it has the BEST guides (shoutout again to Baylee, Megan, and Cory) and the coolest views and will be the thing everyone keeps talking about. This course is a memory maker, and I couldn't recommend it enough! We will be back next year to do it again! read more

Our church went on a vacation from Florida multiple families reserved a room at the lower lodge 3-4 months prior, when arriving without any courtesy call they canceled all the rooms at the lower lodge because they didn't want to run the tram. Had we known we wouldn't of went through with the vacation plans. All moved to upper lodge and was very disappointed how we were treated they said they would open the tram on Wednesday and Thursday then cancelled that too! None of the ice machines worked, rats were found in multiple rooms during our stay also lost power for a whole night and half day. We were very disappointed in our visit, but the view is beautiful many of our group just found other things to do outside the park we won't be back if this is how they treat people and there hard working money families saved to vacation here. read more

Great park in a beautiful location. Was there a bit too early in the season so some of the place was closed unfortunately. I was unable to use the tram down to the river for instance. That said this place has something for everyone, from hiking and biking trails to archery targets and equestrian stables. 2 golf courses, championship 18 is a beautiful 6264 yard par 72 (69.4, 120 slope) with some great views and the 9 hole short course is a long par 3 affair with plenty of bunkers and minimal water. The short course offers foot golf as well and just outside the rec center is an 18 hole beginners disc golf course. Other things not available this early in the season were the outdoor pool by the rec center and mini golf. tennis courts were available and well as a nature center but I didn't have a chance to check out either. The resort itself is older but not run down, though noise does travel quickly in the hotel itself, so I will probably get a cabin next time I visit. Food was decent at the restaurant, beer selection minimal, but service was good and wasn't expecting culinary brilliance so no shattered expectations there. read more
